00:00The NH4, presently known as NH48, connecting Mumbai to Karnataka contains a lot of cities or tourist spots.
00:09This highway passes through highly populated towns and cities of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh,
00:16namely Pune, Satara, Karad, Sangli, Kolhapur, Belgao, Bharwad, Hubli, Haveri and many more.
00:24To travel all these places, this highway is the most frequently used road.
00:30On this highway near Satara, Pune, the Khambat Ki Ghat is another point of attraction,
00:36as it includes a lot of S-curves with steep inclined slope, and today we will discuss about that.
00:43But before continue, thank you all for your support and love as we have reached 10,000 subscribers.
00:50You all have supported me through this journey in my good and bad times.

01:14Earlier, Khambat Ki Ghat Road was two-way.
01:17Later in 1995, a separate tunnel was built which separated the Kolhapur Pune Road.
01:23The current one-way tunnel was constructed through a mountain range as an alternative
01:29to existing Khambat Ki Ghat in Khandala Tahsil of Satara District.
01:34This tunnel on Pune-Satara Road was built as an alternative to the deadly S-shaped curve,
01:40which was allegedly become a bigger threat to motorists since only 10% of the affixed lamps were functional.
01:47The facility had been constructed by the National Highways Authority of India, NHAI.
01:54Regular commuters had raised the issue with NHAI then.
01:58They had alleged that the toll contractor and NHAI had deliberately neglected to incorporate basic safety measures inside the tunnel.
02:06Located around 1 km from the Khambat Ki Ghat towards Pune, the flawed S-design of the earlier road had claimed over many lives and earned the title of a black spot.
02:18According to local police, it was risky for drivers to navigate the vehicles on the steep slope involving curves, in the absence of an inclination.
02:33It was expected that the new tunnel would reduce the fatality count.
02:37However, in the absence of proper lights, the tunnel had become another black spot.
02:42To travel from Pune to Satara, people have to travel through this ghat portion, which is almost 8 km long.
02:53And to travel from Satara to Pune, people have to travel through Khambat Ki Ghat portion, which is almost 6 km long,
03:00which includes the 850 meter long one-way tunnel.
03:04To avoid this S-curve and the traffic congestion, Central Government is building a 6-lane-to-in tunnel, 3-lane-each road project.
03:16Right now, to travel from Pune to Satara, people have to travel for 45 minutes, which includes risky steep gradient of road.
03:25And from Satara to Pune, it takes 15 minutes through the tunnel, which was earlier dangerous too.
03:30After completion of this Tune Tunnel, the travel time will be reduced to 5 to 10 minutes.
03:37So the new Tune Tunnel will be saving an amount of annual fuel consumption as 14 crore 63,39,085 rupees.
03:46By avoiding the S-curve, the amount of accident will also decrease.
03:50The starting chainage of this project is near Bele at 771.73 km and ending at 782 km.
04:09The width of the main carriageway will be 10.5 meter and each tunnel width will be 16.16 meter.
04:15The maximum height of the tunnel will be 9.31 meter and the least height will be 5.5 meter.
04:23The carriageway will be having rigid pavement as PQC road and there will be crossing way between both the tunnel at every 400 meter interval for emergency purposes.
04:33Each tunnel length will be 1.148 km.
04:36For better experience than existing tunnel, there will be LED light for better illumination, jet fan on ceiling will be there for proper ventilation and also there will be tunnel control center with all modern technologies for handling emergency situations.
04:59The total cost of this project is approximately 720 crore rupees.
05:09About the progress, the tunnel excavation is completed and all the pier construction has been completed too.
05:15Well, as per official, when the new Tune Tunnel will be operational, they will close the existing old tunnel.
