00:12It was a protest in support of 31-year-old Joshua Samaru who died and his common-in-law wife, 25-year-old Kaya Sealy, who was critically injured following a police shooting.
00:23So my name is Mariah Walcott. I, as well as Alyssa, went to school with Kaya. I have a personal relationship with her. We've been friends for about 13 years now. The question was, how do I feel about the situation from a personal standpoint in terms of just as a human being, how do I feel about the situation sick to my stomach?
00:44My name is Alyssa Phillip. I am the co-founder, along with Mariah Walcott, of this protest. We are past students of Bishop Anstey High School and friends of Kaya Sealy.
00:54The protest took place outside of Woodford Square, just across the street from the Red House in Port of Spain, as the police observed from a distance.
01:03This young, amazing, brilliant woman now has to, as Alyssa rightfully said, spend a good amount of time in a wheelchair recuperating from what we are refusing God to say paralysis, right?
01:18She now has to adjust her life being a single mother and a single mother not by choice.
01:23A father is dead. Two children now have to spend the rest of their lives without their father in it. We are here today to demand justice because they're not giving it to us for free.
01:38There has been outrage since CCTV video began circulating, which appears to show the hands of Mr. Samaru up in the air from inside a white aqua as police opened the fire on the vehicle.
01:49Police Commissioner Alistair Guevara said last week that while he had considered releasing additional video and audio in what he called the public interest, he said legal advice cautioned against doing so.
02:03Having reviewed the evidence gathered thus far, including the same video posted online, I find no basis at this time to suspend or place any officer on administrative leave.
02:15However, I have recommended counseling for the officers involved, and in keeping with our commitment to transparency and accountability, a first division officer has been appointed to lead the investigation.
02:29Those comments, along with recent statements made by Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander, were source of anger at the protest.
02:36You are telling me the officers are receiving counseling while there's a young woman in the hospital?
02:43I can't even have the words. I can't even have the words. Who are the victims? We as a public are now having no confidence in those who are supposed to protect and serve us. Where is the justice?
02:56The protesters are not backing down from their stance.
02:59We have to remember that this was a surrendering man. Joshua drove from point A to point B, and he was riddled with bullets. I am pleading 19 bullets.
03:14I am pleading with the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. If you would like any semblance of respect and integrity to remain within your government, call for the Commissioner of Police to step down and your Minister of Homeland Security.
03:37Also at the protest was Pouad Aboubakar, political leader of the new National Vision.
03:42We want a society where there is justice. Right is right.
03:49TV6 News was there when police officers in Radgeer appeared. The protesters had one response.
