00:00First trip we go on, I promise you would have given me the rock. Oh yeah. If you and Hook wanted to give it to me. This time, hey man, you're on your own. There's the fish. Present the bait the way you're supposed to. Do what I taught you to do and execute. That's where we're at on this trip. Oh yeah. It's a fair battle. It is competitive and I'm out here to win. This is a competition. You beat me last time tarp and fishing. Today's my day.
00:26Ethan is going one mission. Bait, in water, catching free fish. I tell you what, you're talking about being on a lucky streak. Hey. Yeah, look at that. There he is. Yeah, that's a good one.
00:47Chasing the Sun is brought to you by Florida Water Sports. Get all you need for the water at fws.fish. Humminbird, simply, clearly, better. Minn Kota. And by Pirates Cove Marina. You enjoy the gulf, we'll take care of the rest.
01:11It's summertime in Panama City Beach. Got perfect weather. And what that means to me is it's tarpon time.
01:34Well, we got you on them last season and you weren't, you know, you weren't a pro yet, but you got pro status now. So it's time to get some redemption, put something on film and try to rewrite this story a little bit. There you go. I like that. Water's absolutely gorgeous. And I think it's going to be a tremendous, yeah.
01:53It's getting me excited. Let's get, doesn't get any better. Let's go ahead, talking about it. Let's go do it.
01:57Whoa. You know, there's always those three factors I'm looking for when I'm sight fishing. It's water clarity, sunshine, and the light winds. Today's one of those days where we have all three of them.
02:11Then we're in 12 feet of water. I can see every grain of sand on the bottom. That's exactly what we want.
02:17I know visibility is going to be good, but when we first pull out of the pass right here and I can look down and see those spotted eagle rays just as clear as day.
02:24When you see that first animal in the water, that's when you first realize like how good the clarity is.
02:31And they just swim up and down this beach, you know, they're, I think they're like plankton feeders and they, a lot of times you'll see them on current edges.
02:40Like right here at the pass when you have the bay water flowing out and then you have this clean gulf water where they meet some reason that creates that.
02:48That's the perfect scenario for them to feed, I guess.
02:51Because we live in, in paradise here in Panama city beach and every day on the water, you get to see something different.
02:57We made it all the way to Regency Towers and Watercrest and, uh, not even a half mile or a little, maybe a mile, a hundred fish.
03:09Oh, look, that boat's got one on, a red dill fight.
03:10Oh yeah, you got it at the boat.
03:12All right, let's join the party.
03:14These tarpons are in a different place every day. You don't know where a school is going to be at.
03:17It's a feeling of relief because you go, all right, we're in the game.
03:21We have the right bait. Now we have a big school of tarpon.
03:24I got something to work with here. Your hospitality, the first tarpon trip I was with you was first class.
03:30Hey, and I'm not hooking your bait on for you. You get, you get to pick your own bait.
03:35You can select one of those or go get you a fresh one.
03:38Our true friendship came out on this trip was like, Hey buddy, you're on your own.
03:42I taught you what to do last time. If you don't remember, that's your fault.
03:44Come on, come on, get your, get your bait in there. Don't wait for me. I'm not going to wait for you.
03:51Hey, when you're fishing with friends, it's, it's a fair battle. All right.
03:54It is competitive and I'm out here to win.
03:57Now I don't feel like it's a fair fight if you don't know the rules.
04:00And so that's why the first trip, I at least teach you the rules to this game.
04:05That's how you know I really love you when I start giving you a hard time.
04:07That's good, man.
04:08School seems pretty big. I mean, running from here, kind of 30, 40 yards back.
04:13Yeah. I just really see a big, right there, nod of them right here.
04:18The times that I've fished with you, I've learned that every group has its own mentality, their own MO.
04:23I fought a tarpon last year. I broke him off, caught, hooked up with another one.
04:28He chafed through the leader, fought him for a while.
04:30It's all in the details, right?
04:31That's right.
04:32And tarpon fishing, it's very, it's a very finicky thing.
04:35They feel our presence. Now they won't leave.
04:39They're not going to turn around and go back where they came from because you spooked them.
04:42But what they will do, they'll start riding a little lower in the water.
04:45They'll give you those indicators that they don't like what you're doing.
04:50I mean, I'm on the edge here and they go all the way to there and you're dead centered at them.
04:56Like somebody's got a bite.
05:01What is Ethan working with?
05:02I don't know, man. I don't feel anything.
05:04You know, it's kind of weird feeling.
05:05Big fish.
05:08Come on.
05:08Oh, no. I can't slow down.
05:24These baits are just swimming right back at us.
05:27And where the fish are.
05:28They're just right there up.
05:29Right here, right?
05:31You can go across me, too.
05:32You might have to go on the right side, yell at that.
05:34What's interesting about this trip that I got to bring forward to everybody in the audience is first trip we go on, I promise you, you would have given me the rod.
05:42Oh, yeah.
05:42If you had hooked one, he gave it to me.
05:44This time, like, hey, man, you're on your own.
05:47There's the fish.
05:48Present the bait the way you're supposed to.
05:50Do what I taught you to do and execute it, right?
05:52And that's where we're at on this trip.
05:54It almost looks like they're parting and going around our baits.
05:57Literally, what just happened?
06:00Yeah, there's your answer right there.
06:02Yeah, I know.
06:03Boy, that bird's just staring them down.
06:05When I saw the bird start working, it was kind of an odd scene, but I realized what was happening is there's literally a giant school of cigar men is swimming with the school of tarpons.
06:16I think that's why we were having a hard time getting a bite, because half the time we were throwing, we were actually casting our cigar men into another school of cigar men that's not the tarpons themselves.
06:24So I was like, you know what, we'll find another group.
06:27So let's just keep moving, because in my mind, I want to find that perfect big group that's happy, they're floating.
06:34Not ideal.
06:37Run way down the beach.
06:40Found another school of fish.
06:41Found another school of fish.
06:42Two boats only.
06:45I just knew it was too good to be true.
06:47I won't blame you for being on the boat, but you only have two options at that point.
06:51You either join the party and go fish a group of fish with these other boats, or you go do something else.
06:59I have a feeling we're going to go catch a red snapper.
07:02They're in season.
07:03Yeah.
07:03Because we've run way down the beach looking for these fish, we've gotten outside of my snapper fishing expertise region.
07:16So we are literally, I'm going to look at this Coastmaster chart that I have on my Apex unit.
07:20There's a bunch of wrecks marked on here.
07:23I hope they're there, and I have no idea what's on them.
07:26There's not many times that I get on the water with you that we're not going to fish something you hadn't fished before.
07:30So this is a great opportunity for me and you to go see something new, do something new, and see what it produces.
07:43Something.
07:44A fish!
07:45What is Ethan working with?
07:49I don't know, man.
07:49I don't feel anything.
07:51You know, it's kind of weird.
07:51It's got to be a scamp.
07:54Nothing wrong with a scamp.
07:56Pretty good call there.
07:58Ha!
07:59Pretty good call.
08:00I'll take it.
08:01First bait at my new spot.
08:04I don't know if he'll measure, though.
08:06So I'm not sure how we went from trophy fishing to catching little eaten fish, but if you're going to catch, you know, the first fish of the day and it's going to be really small,
08:15it might as well be something really good.
08:16To me, this is the best eating fish in the Gulf of Mexico.
08:21So we're going to get him back in the water really quick so he can head back down and measure next time.
08:28That's right.
08:29So competitive analysis here.
08:32Ethan won.
08:33Big zero over here.
08:34Big zero over here.
08:36Colorful of scams, Ethan.
08:37I'm not going to be that upset about the tarpon deal.
08:40I don't think I will be either, except for you also don't have to go back.
08:44So, yeah, hey, I still ain't caught a tarpon on TV, but it makes it a little better that at least you've caught him.
08:51It does make it a little bit better.
08:54In my competitive nature, knowing that you caught a scamp, I'm like, all right, I get hooked up.
08:59It might be the same thing, Ethan.
09:02He did.
09:02We might have us a little load of scamps right here.
09:06It's not much of a fight, so I immediately go, probably another scamp.
09:11Could it be possible?
09:11So I'm kind of excited, maybe even getting a little arrogant as it's coming up to the surface.
09:17If it is, I'm going to pull that measuring tape out and we're going to start pinching these tails.
09:20While you're bringing this up.
09:22What, you got a snapper?
09:24Yeah.
09:24I'm reeling in a beautiful red snapper at the same time.
09:29Nice.
09:29What have we got here?
09:32Oh, it's a white snapper.
09:34It's funny, we don't see a whole lot of it.
09:36It's actually a red porgy.
09:37You're still really not on the scoreboard.
09:40There's a lot of people that are going hungry at your house right now.
09:42I mean, I get a half a point for the porgy.
09:44Half a point for the porgy?
09:46Can you fillet a porgy?
09:47Beautiful fish, too.
09:48Got some really cool iridescent colors on them.
09:51The meat is just like, it's almost just clear.
09:53It's so white.
09:54They make good tacos.
09:55You just need two or three per taco.
09:57Okay, gotcha.
09:57But you've caught how many fish?
09:59All right, in all reality, Ethan's out for an early lead.
10:01But, there's always a but.
10:03Do we keep the first four legal ones and go?
10:07Or do we just sit out here and play with it?
10:08Oh, yours came off?
10:10Are you kidding me?
10:11I'm not going to lie, but maybe I felt a little good when I saw that rod go.
10:15I sure hope y'all saw that.
10:17Ethan had a nice snapper on his rod and it came off.
10:22It just so happens the knot came undone.
10:26And it also just so happens that Ethan did just retie it himself.
10:29That was not my doing.
10:31I want to give you an opportunity to kind of catch up.
10:33So, what I did, I was like, well, I got to act like I'm still fishing.
10:36So, let's barely tie this hook on there.
10:38Let it slip.
10:39Give him a little leeway so he can kind of catch up with your saltwater brown.
10:44But we're going to get there one way or the other.
10:45And even if I have to do it to help my friend's ego, I'll help you.
10:49Thanks.
10:52Uh-huh.
10:53We're hooked up over here, but he's not.
10:55I think your fish could eat this one, but.
10:58Uh-oh.
10:59He's got a big one.
11:00Hold him.
11:00Hold him.
11:01Hold him.
11:02Hold him.
11:12That might not hurt the chunk of you here.
11:15Today was supposed to be about your first tarpon.
11:17Our timing was off just by a little bit.
11:20Optionality, right?
11:21You know, we keep keeping our options open.
11:23As heartbreaking as it is, you know as well as anybody, you and I love to get out there
11:27and pull on some reef fish.
11:31Big fish.
11:34Come on.
11:36Oh, no.
11:37I can't slow down.
11:38Oh, come on.
11:39Get him out.
11:40It's a great opportunity to be able to do that right now.
11:44And it does happen to be red snapper season.
11:47That's what a Palo City Beach red snapper looks like right there.
11:50Son.
11:51Ha, ha, ha.
11:54Come on, baby.
11:55That's what I'm talking about.
11:59You hooked up?
12:00We were hooked up over here, but he's not.
12:02I think your fish could eat this one, but.
12:04If you'd have drove over this spot right here and looked at the sonar, you'd have said,
12:08Justin, that don't mark anything.
12:11Why would y'all stop and fish there?
12:13That's why we stopped and fish there.
12:14Look at this beautiful lane.
12:15Oh, yeah, beautiful lane.
12:16Look at that.
12:195,000 years ago.
12:21If you paddled out here to this reef, it probably would have looked about like it does right now.
12:26It's just hard limestone bottom.
12:28You have big coral heads growing off of it.
12:31Tons of life.
12:32Look at here.
12:39Of course, mine's bigger, but for a lane snapper, y'all, that's about as big as they get right there.
12:43We're supposed to be catching and releasing tarpon.
12:46You know what?
12:47We're going to release these onto a grill.
12:51We may have to go visit Chef Paul again.
12:53That's right.
12:54Seems like whenever I go fishing with Ethan, it turns into a food fest.
12:57That's it.
13:00Man, he's working on me over there.
13:01What have we got here?
13:04Could it be that quick?
13:06Got the two reds?
13:07Yep, sure is.
13:09Pretty nice one.
13:11Not as big as the first one.
13:12He's probably 19, 20 inches.
13:14You just got to get off the same public wrecks that everybody's been fishing and go hit some of those little smaller pieces of bottom.
13:25Voila, like that.
13:26Got my two.
13:28Uh-oh.
13:29Hold him, hold him, hold him.
13:31I don't think he's going to be what you had, but I bet you he's going to be close.
13:39All right, slide left a little bit if you can.
13:41We'll try to grab him.
13:41Y'all, this is, we fish 30-pound test leaders, and you don't want to just grab that dude and flip him in the boat.
13:49Oh, he's barely hooked, too.
13:50Come on, dude.
13:52Oh, don't do that.
13:56Y'all see what he's doing here.
13:57He's doing everything he can not to get that fish in the boat for me.
13:59Hey, I tried to knock this thing off the hook, but you know what?
14:02I just couldn't do it.
14:04Man, he's...
14:05What'd y'all think about that?
14:08Paint the summer red.
14:10It's paint the summer red snapper red.
14:14I like it, okay.
14:14There we go.
14:15Look at that box.
14:16Just like that.
14:17That's a dude.
14:18All right.
14:19Hey.
14:20All right.
14:20We do know how to kill some snappers now.
14:24Ethan is going one mission.
14:26Bait, in water, catch free fish.
14:30Here, give it to me.
14:31Here, come grab this.
14:32Here, this is up now.
14:33Here, I'm going to get this flatline, too, anyways.
14:35I'm going, hey, make sure everything on the boat's taken care of.
14:38I need to prep some frozen baits that we can chomp.
14:41I want to have a flatline out, which is basically a larger bait that we're going to put cast out with no weight on it.
14:48So, it'll swim around on the surface.
14:50You never know what could show up.
14:51Dang.
14:54Man, he ate it out the end.
14:56Look at that.
14:59All right.
15:00That is a quick limit of red snapper, y'all.
15:03Plus a lane and a white.
15:08You want to go catch the tarpon now?
15:09Well on our way.
15:10Too bad.
15:10We're not qualified.
15:14You get the flatline out there.
15:16You get distracted trying to get your bottom rod down there.
15:18Out of the corner of my eye that you've got your back to, that flatline, I can watch it, too.
15:22And it wasn't long after you put that rod on her.
15:26It was on.
15:27This is a competition, okay?
15:31You beat me last time tarpon fishing.
15:33Today's my day.
15:34I don't know.
15:36Justin?
15:37All right.
15:37It's either a nice king or a wild.
15:39So, I'd be happy either way.
15:44That's it, man.
15:44Just that speed and the conditions made me at least get that hope.
15:50I'm like, that might be a wild.
15:51You know what I can tell you?
15:52It's not.
15:53What's that?
15:54We've got some color here, so.
15:55It's not a Benita.
15:57That's wild.
15:58I mean, to be able to see color there, because it is a long way.
16:01It's probably still 50 feet down.
16:05Hey, Justin.
16:06Come here.
16:07Come here.
16:07Come here.
16:07Oh, he's snagged, too.
16:09Here, lighting that drag up.
16:11Which way?
16:12Left?
16:12Yeah.
16:13Just don't even pull back.
16:16Let me back over to him.
16:17Hurry.
16:19Chasing the Sun has been brought to you by Minn Kota.
16:26Florida Water Sports.
16:28Get all you need for the water at fws.fish.
16:34Humminbirds, simply, clearly, better.
16:38And by Hyros Cold Marina.
16:41You enjoy the gulf.
16:43We'll take care of the rest.
16:47The coolest new attraction has just opened up, and we got a sneak peek at Pirate's Voyage.
16:52Amazing.
16:54You've never seen a pirate like me, right?
16:56I'd last about five minutes out on the open sea, wouldn't I?
17:01Well, anyway, we're going to fight all of you to Panama City Beach and for our brand-new Pirate's Voyage Dinner Show.
17:08And it's going to be opening up for all the great folks that live around here and for all the great folks that come here on vacation.
17:15And it's a perfect place to bring the next pirate crew.
17:21And everybody here in Panama City Beach has been amazing.
17:24They're so great people to work with, and they've been so helpful.
17:28I'm glad to see y'all.
17:28I love you, and thank you.
17:29I'm just carrying this because it matches my boots.
17:32And I couldn't zip my boots, so I made them look like pirate boots.
17:37Do I look like a pirate to anybody at all?
17:48You know, it's funny, Ethan.
17:49Like, when we used to fish a flatline, it was 99% for king mackerel.
17:53And when it got bit, you knew it was a king mackerel.
17:55Now it seems like when you get a good bite on that flatline...
17:59It could be anything.
18:00It could be a king mackerel, and this probably is.
18:04But it could be a blackfin tuna.
18:06It could be a wahoo.
18:07So I'm thinking, all right, we got a kingfish.
18:09We catch these all the time.
18:10We got a really, really nice king on.
18:12Hey, Justin.
18:13Oh, it's a wahoo.
18:14Come here.
18:14Oh, he snagged, too.
18:16Here, lighten that drag up.
18:18Which way, left?
18:19Yeah.
18:21Just don't even pull back.
18:23Let me back over to him.
18:24Hurry.
18:25When we first got that look at this wahoo, you can see those stripes just lit up on him.
18:31Or a wahoo.
18:31How about that?
18:32Ethan's first wahoo, baby.
18:33Ethan had just said, ain't never caught a wahoo before.
18:36Today was supposed to be about your first tarpon, but being about your first wahoo, that's just as good.
18:42That's what I'm talking about.
18:43I tell you what, you're talking about being on a lucky street.
18:45Hey, y'all look at this hook job.
18:47Right here in the side.
18:51Wow.
18:53Just fell right out.
18:54Give me some of that, man.
18:55That's so funny.
18:57All right, let's let this guy go now.
18:59Yeah, right.
19:00You know, we are conservationists.
19:01I'm going to show you where we're going to let him go, Justin.
19:03Look at them stripes.
19:04I can't believe he never came up and showed us.
19:06He just stayed down deep.
19:08Man.
19:08Unbelievable.
19:08Look how pretty.
19:09Seeing those beautiful stripes on that fish and knowing that was a fish that I had never brought to a boat before.
19:14And most people haven't.
19:15So even though it's a fairly popular fish to target, it's still a fairly rare fish.
19:21It's not something that a lot of people have caught.
19:23So it is cool to kind of check that one off the list.
19:27That's awesome, dude.
19:28I'm pretty fired up about that.
19:30Are you?
19:30Good.
19:31Just because it's like, well, ain't he a giant?
19:33No, I know.
19:33But he counts.
19:34You know what?
19:35He's going to taste really good.
19:39So regardless of that wahoo being foul hooked or not, the snapper slam has happened on this boat, and you know what the score is.
19:47Yeah, I'm behind.
19:54That wahoo is a game changer for me, man.
19:56First one ever.
