00:00Over 20 years ago, I was based in South Africa.
00:05Reporting from across the continent for the BBC.
00:08It's Big Papa, here's the news.
00:10It was an unforgettable experience.
00:13Roll up, roll up.
00:15But I've always wanted to come back.
00:18Milter.
00:20And find out more about the Africa.
00:25We rarely see on TV.
00:26One mistake, I clap you.
00:28Oh my, what?
00:30Can't make a mistake, then.
00:31Now, I'm traveling across this fast,
00:34con-
00:35to discover why life can feel so much bigger
00:38and bolder here than ever.
00:40Anywhere else on earth.
00:41I'll be uncovering some deep family roots.
00:44You have rum-
00:45I'm from Africa.
00:45I knew I was a warrior.
00:47Yes.
00:48God.
00:49And getting the chance to-
00:50Live life, local style.
00:51Woo!
00:54As I-
00:55Experience the speed.
00:56Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
00:58The sights.
00:59Cheers.
01:00Check out that view.
01:01And the soul.
01:02I'm the soul.
01:03I'm the soul.
01:04Woo!
01:05Of this vibrant and varied land.
01:07Oh, look at that.
01:08Animals crossing the road.
01:10Join me on my African adventure.
01:16I'm the soul.
01:17Bye-bye.
01:17Bye-bye.
01:17Bye-bye.
01:18Bye-bye.
01:25Flanked by the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, South Africa lies on the south.
01:30It's huge, covering nearly half a million.
01:34And home to over 60 million people.
01:40Sometimes called the Rainbow Nation for its colourful mix of culture.
01:44South Africa is a land of sophisticated cities.
01:49Spectacular.
01:50Circular wildlife, brilliant beaches and great complexity.
01:53Back in the 90s.
01:58The struggle against apartheid was one of those stories that made me realise...
02:03I wanted to become a reporter.
02:05I had to try to shine a light on injustice.
02:07Wherever...
02:08...was taking place.
02:09Many years later, I became the BBC's correspondent living here...
02:13...in South Africa.
02:14I was based in Johannesburg, but I didn't really get a chance...
02:18...to explore the city because I was off covering stories right around the continent.
02:23Well, now I'm back.
02:24I'm going to catch up with some old friends and I'm going to experience...
02:28...this life here in a very different way.
02:33Johannesburg is the country's economic powerhouse, an amalgamation of...
02:38...stalling townships and suburbs that still reflect the apartheid era of racial segregation.
02:43I'm off to Soweto, the biggest and best known township area.
02:48And home to around one and a half million people.
02:53It's changed a lot since I last worked this beat with new creative cultures emerging.
02:58Oh my word!
03:02Oh my word!
03:03While I'm here, I'll be getting into a bit of a spin.
03:06Woo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo!
03:08Stepping out at a car...
03:13...to wash.
03:14Zig, zig, zig, zig.
03:15Zig, zig, zig, zig.
03:16Zig, zig, zig, zig.
03:18And later, I'll be making my own mark on some of the world's movies.
03:23...of the most famous street art.
03:24But for...
03:25...the most famous street art.
03:27But for...
03:28...first, I'm heading to Vilakazi Street, at the heart of Soweto, where Nelson Mandela...
03:33...lived after his release from prison, to catch up with a local and an old mate of mine.
03:38Milton and Cozy.
03:39Milton!
03:40Milton!
03:41Milton!
03:42Milton!
03:43Milton!
03:44Milton!
03:45Milton!
03:46Milton!
03:47Milton!
03:48Milton!
03:49Milton!
03:50Thank you, brother.
03:51Yeah!
03:52Thank you!
03:53Milton was a BBC producer when I was a...
03:58...journalist here. Later, he rose to become the BBC's Africa Bureau Chief.
04:03Not bad for a kid born in Soweto during apartheid.
04:08So, the last time I was here would have been 2013?
04:122013, man.
04:13Mandela's death.
04:14Mandela's death. We came here for the Monas who were singing.
04:17They were all...
04:18...along the Lacaze Street, past his house.
04:20Then we went to Pretoria for lying in state.
04:22For lying in state.
04:23Then we went to Kunu for the burial.
04:25His ancestral home way out east.
04:27Yeah.
04:28Working in the newsroom before that, it was always death, war...
04:33...disease across Africa.
04:34Yeah.
04:35And, you know, we want to try and tell some good news stories about this place.
04:38Because there are tons of them.
04:39They're everywhere.
04:40This is a great opportunity to...
04:43...balance the news.
04:44Because the news is not wrong.
04:46But the news can be one-sided.
04:48Yeah.
04:49So, we want to show all the sides.
04:50Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:51Like now we're in peacetime South Africa.
04:53Yeah.
04:54And most of the time when we come with our cameras, it's tear gas, bullets and...
04:58...people ducking and diving.
04:59Oh, my God.
05:00You know, so this is good that we're here.
05:01So, this is a good time.
05:02We're here.
05:03And everybody's at peace.
05:04Yeah.
05:05People are just trying to survive.
05:06Yeah.
05:07They're fighting inequality.
05:08They're fighting inflation.
05:09Yeah.
05:10Not guns and bullets from their own government.
05:13They're fighting injuries.
05:16Villacasi streets has changed a lot.
05:17Because the taxpayers have changed a lot...
05:18since Milton was growing up.
05:19It's now a magnet for tourists.
05:21But it was at the center of the street
05:23for a struggle against apartheid.
05:25It's the only street in the world
05:26that was home to two
05:28Nobel Peace Prize winners,
05:29Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
05:33This was the nucleus of the anti-apartheid resistance.
05:37This is...
05:38where the people gathered together and said,
05:41this far and no further.
05:43Milton was here at what is...
05:48is now considered the catalyst event
05:50in the long road to end apartheid.
05:53The 1976 Rebellion.
05:55Remember, I was in the 1976...
05:58uprising.
05:59That's right.
06:00The Soweto uprising.
06:01When the students rose up and kick-started it.
06:03and re-ignited their anti-apartheid struggle.
06:06That's what convinced me to be a...
06:08reporter.
06:09I was watching the pictures of...
06:10the coppers firing on these kids.
06:12You know...
06:13growing up in Lancashire.
06:14That's the weird thing, isn't it?
06:15You know...
06:16You're here in Soweto.
06:17I'm way over there.
06:18or there...
06:19in Bolton in Lancashire.
06:20And we're united by what's going on here.
06:22And we end up...
06:23working together.
06:24And you were inspired by my people.
06:25We end up working in Basra, Iraq together.
06:28That's right.
06:29You ended up hosting me in Singapore.
06:30That's right.
06:31We were in Singapore together.
06:32And now we're back here.
06:33Now we're back on Vilakasi streets.
06:37There's Mr. Mondeva.
06:38a free man taking his first steps...
06:41into a new South Africa.
06:43Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990...
06:46having served 27 years...
06:48for his activism in opposing apartheid.
06:51And no visit to Vilakasi streets...
06:53would be complete...
06:54without stopping at the house...
06:56where he lived.
06:57This is it.
06:58the famous Mandela house.
06:59This is it, man.
07:00This is where he returned to in 1990.
07:03in February...
07:04when he was released from prison.
07:06And you know, you can see...
07:07they've changed the fence.
07:08to represent prison bars.
07:10Prison bars.
07:11Because it's now a museum.
07:12Big tourist attraction.
07:13a place of history.
07:18wherever we are in the world together...
07:22Milton and I...
07:23love to experience great food.
07:25Where are you taking me?
07:26This is my local...
07:28hangout.
07:29So I brought you to 1947...
07:31on Vilakasi.
07:32That's the name.
07:33of the restaurant.
07:34Oof.
07:35It's named after the owner's parents...
07:36because they were born in 1947.
07:38Yeah.
07:39And that's the year...
07:40Before...
07:41Before...
07:42Apartheid was...
07:43to leave this letter...
07:44in 1948.
07:45Exactly.
07:48If Milton recommends somewhere...
07:52then I know...
07:53it's gonna be good.
07:54And Chef Cabello...
07:55is preparing a feast...
07:56of chicken...
07:57with ch...
07:58laka laka...
07:59a kind of...
08:00spicy vegetable mix.
08:01Dumpling bread...
08:02and...
08:03the house favourite.
08:03braised ox tale.
08:08And as a surprise...
08:09Milton has asked a friend...
08:10to join us.
08:12Ah!
08:13There she is.
08:14Oh, hello.
08:15Welcome.
08:16Oh.
08:17Activist...
08:18Mandela.
08:19Mandela.
08:20Nelson Mandela's...
08:21granddaughter.
08:22The first...
08:23of the first...
08:23the first...
08:24Ah, the first...
08:25of the first...
08:26this is a pleasure to meet you.
08:27Clive Myrie.
08:28My old friend.
08:29Yes, yeah, yeah.
08:30I'm humbled...
08:31Don't be humbled...
08:32meeting you.
08:33Honestly, trust me...
08:34I'm humbled...
08:35meeting you.
08:36Yeah, thank you.
08:37Can you explain...
08:38to Clive...
08:38the first of the first...
08:39of the first...

08:51of the number one...

09:02What is that like?
09:03for you?
09:04It's a hard road...
09:05to navigate.
09:06Now you must remember...
09:07that my...

09:09for the bulk of my life...
09:10when I was born...
09:11he was in prison already.

09:20to myself...
09:21I can...
09:22I can access him...
09:23every time...
09:23anytime I want...
09:24and those illusions...
09:25were shattered...
09:26because...
09:27when he...
09:28came out...
09:29he became...
09:30the grandfather of...

10:45what do you remember most about your grandfather?
10:47what really...
10:48comes out when you...
10:49think about him?
10:50it is his humility...
10:52with my grandfather...
10:53it really didn't matter whether it was...
10:55Queen Elizabeth that he was meeting...
10:58an ordinary man on the street...
11:00yeah...
11:01he treated people...
11:02as human...

11:11you know...
11:12darling...
11:13I call...
11:14the Queen of England...
11:15by her first name...
11:16Elizabeth!
11:17Ha!
11:18Ha!
11:19Ha!
11:20Ha!
11:21Ha!
11:22Ha!
11:23Ha!
11:24Ha!
11:25Ha!
11:26Ha!
11:27Ha!
11:28Ha!
11:29Ha!
11:30Ha!
11:31Ha!
11:32Ha!

12:08Ha!
12:09Ha!
12:10Ha!
12:11But some locals have really put their foot...
12:16...down to create a whole new sport.
12:21Spinning!
12:26...throwing a car into a spin by revving the engine in...
12:31...first gear, dropping the clutch and hitting the accelerator...
12:34...to do as many donuts or spin...
12:36...as you can.
12:37Hey, Paulie!
12:38How are you doing?
12:39Good to see you.
12:41Oh my God!
12:42Look at this!
12:43Paulie Erm is founder of the Soweto Drift Academy...
12:46...and one of the people responsible for turning this into a serious sport.
12:51Listen, man, when I get into a car, I usually go from...
12:56...from A to B, and there's no diversion in the middle.
12:59Ah, street line is...
13:01...street line is boring.
13:04That does not look boring.
13:06Yeah, she's one of my protegees, actually.
13:09Her name is Michelle.
13:10Michelle!
13:11She goes...
13:11...by the name Jalapeno.
13:12Jalapeno!
13:13Exactly!
13:14Hot!
13:16You see, that's very hot.
13:17Yeah.
13:18Car spinning began as an illegal craze in 19...
13:21...the 1980s Soweto, part of the rebellion against apartheid.
13:25Our brothers...
13:26...would go to the white suburbs, they steal cars there...
13:29...and then they bring them into the hood.
13:31And spin them?
13:32Yes, they would spin them.
13:33And they would celebrate...
13:34Yes.
13:35...having what?
13:36Pulled one over on...
13:38...on the white minority.
13:40We have...
13:41...conquered them.
13:42We have taken...
13:43...something that is...
13:44...relatable to them.
13:45And then now they...
13:46...celebrating with it...
13:47...here in the hood.
13:51Through his academy, Pule helped move the craze from...
13:56...illegal underground activity to officially sanction sport.
14:00Now drawing...
14:01...thousands of spectators.
14:06...I am fired!
14:09Woo!
14:10I am fired!
14:11Wow!
14:12It sounds scary!
14:13It sounds scary!
14:14It sounds scary!
14:15It sounds scary!
14:16Hello!
14:17Hello!
14:18It's a pleasure to meet you!
14:19Thank you so much!
14:20Absolutely!
14:21Thank you!
14:22Amazing!
14:23Why did you want to get into it?
14:24I love the thrill!
14:26I love the thrill!
14:27I love the screeching of the tires!
14:28I love the smell of the fumes!
14:30And I love the burst!
14:31The burst?
14:32Yeah!
14:33What's the burst?
14:34So when the tire just goes...
14:35Boom!
14:36Yeah!
14:36There are so many women doing this, are there?
14:37There are a few!
14:38Yeah!
14:39But it's a difficult industry for women to push through.
14:41But luckily because of Bule, we've had initiatives where ladies were able to get a chance a year later.
14:46It was a long program that I was a part of.
14:48Isn't it dangerous though?
14:49It isn't because we are in a confined...
14:51space.
14:52The car itself is not going at a higher speed than you would assume because you're outside.
14:56Right.
14:57And you're seeing the smoke so you're thinking it's going at a really high speed.
14:59It's not that dangerous.
15:00Yeah.
15:01No, no, no, it isn't.
15:01Well, I'm glad to hear it looks more dangerous than it actually is.
15:06I'm riding that.
15:07Yeah.
15:08Top down.
15:09Top down.
15:10Take it to the top now.
15:11Now ride.
15:11I can't do it myself so come on if you got something to say.
15:14Because I'm going to be riding shotguns.
15:16Let's do this.
15:17Let's do this.
15:18Let's do this.
15:22Yes.
15:23And it is on.

15:26I think it is ready for you.
15:28It's up to you.
15:29To feel the thrill.
15:30That's right.
15:31And the chills.

16:22Oh, baby, we'll be just fine.
16:26Oh, my God.
16:42Thank you so much.
16:44Oh, give me a hug, give me a hug.
16:47Thank you so much.
16:49Truly an honor to have you here.
16:50Oh, my Lord, that was...
16:52Incredible.
16:53I didn't...
16:57I did not expect to enjoy that quite as much as I did, but something I have always loved.
17:02It can be such a fantastic expression of the power of the human spirit.
17:07To overcome.
17:08I'm back on Villa...
17:12...to find out how that spirit has turned Soweto into an outdoor gallery.
17:20Senso.
17:22Welcome to Soweto.
17:23Welcome to Ekasi.
17:25Welcome to Villa Gazi.
17:27Villa Gazi, Mikasi.
17:28Mikasi.
17:29What's that?
17:30My neighborhood.
17:31Your neighborhood?
17:32Yes.
17:33Ah.
17:34Senso Unkhlapo is one of Soweto's leading artists whose work...
17:38...can be seen all over these streets.
17:43It's interesting, isn't it, how important street art is.
17:48To art like South Africa.
17:49Yes, definitely.
17:50Because remember...
17:53We never had access to galleries, right?
17:55The oppression was too much...
17:58We could not understand what is going on.
18:00Why are we not getting those accesses?
18:03So to be clear, black people were not allowed into...
18:08...art galleries during apartheid.
18:10Galleries were for the elite.
18:12Mmm.
18:13But there was a lot of changes after Mandela and also after the...
18:18...democracy.
18:19And that was very important for us to say, you know what?
18:22We're gonna...
18:23...do art either.
18:24Oh, so the streets became our canvas.
18:26Wow.
18:27I look forward to it.
18:28I look forward to seeing some of that, man.
18:30Soweto is a melting pot of different cultures and...
18:33...identities.
18:34All of them reflected on the artworks that exist around every corner.
18:38Wow.
18:39Look at this one.
18:40Is this one of yours?
18:41Yes.
18:42It's one of my artworks.
18:43Oh.
18:44When was this done?
18:45It was done three years ago.
18:46Mm-hmm.
18:47That worked.
18:48It's our social commentary.
18:49Social commentary?
18:50So what are you trying to say with this then?
18:52Unity is...
18:53...it's power, you know?
18:54So there's a saying in Zulu, they say,
18:56...
18:58which means we have the same vision.
19:00Hence the pairs of eyes.
19:01That's unity.
19:02So these are all different...
19:03...people put together.
19:04Yes.
19:05It's wonderful.
19:09Senzo is always busy creating new pieces.
19:12And today...
19:13...I'm going to help him finish his latest wall.
19:15We are celebrating Mother Africa.
19:17Mother Africa.
19:18Mother Africa.
19:18Yeah.
19:19Okay.
19:20So the stencil's going up on the wall.
19:23Let's go.
19:24Let's go.
19:25Let's go.
19:26Let's go.
19:27Let's go.
19:28Yeah.
19:29Are you ready to get daddy?
19:30Yeah.
19:31I'm ready to go, man.
19:32We're going to start using...
19:33...black spray cans.
19:34Okay.
19:35Black.
19:36It is.
19:37Ooh.
19:38Thanks-y-hoo.
19:39Yeah.
19:40Yeah.
19:44So this is celebrating Africa.
19:45Mama Africa.
19:46Yes.
19:47Are there other...
19:48...political messages in your work?
19:50Yes, of course.
19:51I mean, art is about social commentary.
19:53And also telling the truth the way it is, you know?
19:57So...
19:58Let's finish now.
19:59Tell me the truth.
20:00What do you think?
20:01I think it looks great.
20:02So now we have to take it out.
20:03Yeah.
20:03Start filling in those beautiful colors.
20:09Right.
20:10I'm going for pink.
20:11Yeah.
20:12Don't be scared, Mr. Meyer.
20:13Just fill it in.
20:14Yes.
20:15Okay.
20:18Orange.
20:19Orange.
20:20Orange.
20:21Orange.
20:23That's my favorite color.
20:24Let's try that one.
20:28All right.
20:29Thanks.
20:30Until next time we got back, we'll be back.
20:32Nice.
20:33You well and truly got a rainbow now.
20:35It's a lot of fun, eh?
20:37Cr-
20:38Creating something out of nothing, a blank white wall like that.
20:41Look at this, those little touches.
20:43That's what makes it art as opposed to just a bit of spray paint on a wall.
20:47Zeki.
20:48It's got character, it's accomplished, and that social message as well.
20:52So we just created-
20:53We created our only language.
20:54That is the language I speak.
20:56Yes.
20:58That's it, let's have a look, let's have a look.
20:59Let's have a look.
21:02Amazing.
21:03You've been doing this before, right?
21:05I didn't want to say yes, but no, no, no, no.
21:08You've tidied up all my horrible bits, so thank you.
21:11Great, thanks for help, Bill.
21:13Oh, thank you, thank you.
21:18Soweto is brimming with creativity.
21:21Just ask these guys that-
21:23Went past as we finished off the mural.
21:28I'll tell you what.
21:33You never know what you're going to come across in the middle of Soweto.
21:37Marjorie.
21:38Catching band in the middle of the road.
21:43I'll tell you what you're going to come across in the middle of the road.
21:47Bye.
21:48That was so much fun, but there's another-
21:53Another art form that's developed in South Africa's townships that's taking the world by storm.
21:58A mapiano.
21:59Can you blow my mind?
22:03A blend of elements like deep house and jazz with a distinct beat-
22:08Performed by artists like Grammy-winning Tyler.
22:12I've been-
22:13I've been told if you want to delve into Amapiano's roots, there's only one place to go.
22:18The car wash.
22:19Hey man, how you doing?
22:20Just a little polish.
22:21Just a little polish.
22:22Just a little polish.
22:23Yeah?
22:24Yeah.
22:25The wheels.
22:26That's great.
22:27Thanks, man.
22:28Joseph Mashabani.
22:29Joseph!
22:30How are you?
22:31He's one of Joburg's up-and-coming d-
22:33dancers and choreographers.
22:34Good to see you, Lenny.
22:35I'm good, I'm good.
22:36Listen, listen, the car's just getting a bit of a walk-
22:38bit of a polish now.
22:39Peter, I think that you can't.
22:40Listen, I was happy to meet you anyway.
22:43Why am I meeting you in the middle of a car wash?
22:45What's that about?
22:46Trust me.
22:47It's not just a car wash.
22:48It's not just a car wash.
22:48It's our culture.
22:49It's our culture.
22:50Really?
22:51In a car wash?
22:52Why?
22:53This is where you get to eat.
22:53Listen to cute music.
22:55Get to know other people.
22:57Yeah.
22:58Good night.
22:59Because my piano plays everyone together.
23:03Car wash parties are big events, complete with DJs and dance battles.
23:08And there's a bit of time for me to pick up some moves before the real party gets started.
23:13It's our first move, man.
23:14Yeah.
23:15You know cats, right?
23:16Cats?
23:17Their hands are always here.
23:18Yeah.
23:18Then just take your right leg and do a heel on your heel.
23:22Uh-huh.
23:23Back.
23:24Uh-huh.
23:25Other heel on your left.
23:26Uh-huh.
23:27So when you do like this.
23:28Now let's go pound.
23:29What?
23:30Have a pound.
23:31A little pound.
23:32Oh.
23:33Pound.
23:33Pound.
23:34Pound.
23:35Pound.
23:36Pound.
23:37It's too fast.
23:38Okay.
23:38Pound.
23:39JP.
23:40D-O.
23:41D-O.
23:42YouIZE.
23:43You.
23:43See, Felix the cat, the wonderful, wonderful cat.
23:48Okay, so I'm a cat.
23:49Right.
23:50Okay, say one, two.
23:52One, two.
23:53Yes.
23:54Okay, let's go again.
23:55Five, six, seven, eight.
23:56One, two.
23:57Then.
23:58Zika, zika, zika.
23:59Zika, zika, zika.
24:00Zika, zika, zika.
24:01Zika, zika, zika.
24:02Zika, zika, zika.
24:03How's my car doing?
24:05It's almost done.
24:06It's getting clean.
24:07It's getting good.
24:08I really got to work on it, man.
24:10It means you're going to do the taggebe challenge.
24:14What?
24:15What?
24:16It's a challenge everyone is doing.
24:18I'm doing it.
24:19Really?
24:20Peggy.
24:23You're joking.
24:24He's not having me on.
24:25Are you serious?
24:26I'm serious.
24:27The latest move.
24:28Blowing up on socials is one way you've got to act as if you've got jelly legs.
24:32You ready?
24:33Let's do it.
24:34I would say asambi.
24:36Asambi.
24:37Let's go.
24:38Let's go.
24:39Let's go.
24:40Five, six, seven, eight.
24:42One, two, three.
24:43One, two, three.
24:44One, two, three.
24:45Zika, zika, zika.
24:46One.
24:47Zika, zika.
24:48Zika, zika, zika.
24:49Zika, zika.
24:50Zika, zika.
24:51And then...
24:53This place really gets cold.
24:58going after dark and having tried out a few moves i can see why amapiano has become so
25:03popular but for young south africans in places like soweto music
25:08and dance means so much more so it was the place where people do escape
25:13since amapiano came like it changed a lot really how
25:18because when you found out now someone was used to do wrong things
25:21it's not a teaching
25:23a teacher would come and play for one hour
25:26it's getting at 1.5
25:28okay going home going home with the bread on the table
25:31right
25:32because of my piano
25:33DJ others are dancers i used to play soccer but now i'm a dancer
25:38because of what i'm a piano
25:40so it's it's giving people a
25:43purpose it's given young people something to sort of you know aim for
25:48to live for
25:49sure it did it did it did i would like because
25:53that's what i'm saying my piano it's no more it's just the music it's a lifestyle
25:56it's a lifestyle
25:57it's a lifestyle
25:58lifestyle
25:58it's a lifestyle

26:27And like any good professional, Joseph has had a wardrobe change.
26:32Before hitting the dance floor.
26:37Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
26:42Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
26:45Dancing is so infected.
26:47Having learned a few moves earlier, it would be rude not to get involved.
26:52Let's go!
26:57Let's do it, man! Let's do it! Let's do it!
27:02Let's go! Let's go!

27:22Partying at the car wash.
27:27Only in Soweto.
27:32Soweto is where the resistance to apartheid was reignited back in the...
27:37...the 1970s and it's that spirit of rebellion that's celebrated here to this day.
27:42Not just in the museums and monuments, but in the street art.
27:47And music, even in the sense of freedom you get in a spinning car.
27:53It's been a real treat coming back here.
27:56I'd left it too long.
27:57This is a part of our channel.
