00:00this organization of tech theories they uh
00:05started actually back in 2006 in iraq and
00:10they got they were a kind of an offshoot of al-qaeda they got tired
00:15of al-qaeda they they weren't radical enough for them and so really around
00:202014 is in june of 2014 is when they really started to come into their own
00:25and they declared a caliphate uh in in syria
00:30starting in syria and they they sort of spread very rapidly
00:35throughout almost all of syria uh to up well
00:40at least the western two-thirds of syria into iraq
00:45they made it within four kilometers of the airport in baghdad when i was there
00:50in 2014. so it was it was a near thing of them
00:55taking over all of iraq as well but suffice it to say this group took over
01:00an area larger than great britain declared it to be their own country
01:05started minting their own currency and printing id identification cards
01:10and and uh they instituted public services trash
01:15pickup and you know stuff like that police uh just enough so that they
01:20could say that they could say that they were doing it and then control the population through fear
