Long-awaited Force Ghosts, epic returns, and more times Star Wars delivered fans the goods.
Transcript
00:00From jaw-dropping rematches that more than lived up to the hype, to the long-awaited ret-
00:05the return of some of the galaxy's most cherished figures.
00:08Star Wars fans may not be able to agree on that.
00:10On most things when it pertains to this corner of space, but next to no one will argue with
00:14the following-
00:15moments all being instances of force-infused fanservice done right.
00:20Gareth here from WhatCultureStarWars and here are 10 times Star Wars gave fans exact-
00:25exactly what they wanted.
00:2610.
00:27The Rematch of the Century Most of the attention was
00:30quite rightly focused on a certain rematch of the century coming into Disney Plus' Obi-Wan
00:35Kenobi.
00:36Yet instead of simply carting out the two former brothers-in-arms to duke it out just
00:40the once, after spending nearly two decades away from the Star Wars spotlight, Debra-
00:45Chow and Kathleen Kennedy gifted fans with the sight of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen's
00:50Ben-
00:50Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker slash Darth Vader, crossing lightsabers on three separate-
00:55and wholly satisfying occasions.
00:57An Obi-Wan absolute mauling at the hands of the rage-
01:00fueled Dark Lord in part 3, was eventually followed by a digitally de-aged bout of-
01:05training between Master and Padawan from before the Clone Wars in part 5.
01:09And if that was-
01:10not enough!
01:11The iconic figures were given one last chance to truly let loose against one another-
01:15in-the-series finale.
01:16With Kenobi reverting back to a classic stance, they-
01:20Peter finally
01:47watch. In fact, arguably one of the most mythical stories ever to tumble out of a much-loved
01:51character.
01:52What's finally and brilliantly realized on the big screen in Ron Howard's space
01:57adventure?
01:57After years of banging on about his trusty Millennium Falcon being the mighty ship that
02:02was able to make the perilous multiple-black-hole-boasting Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs,
02:07Disney finally rewarded fans with the concrete evidence of the legendary Solo genuinely pulling
02:11off
02:12this mesmerizing feat within their 2018 outing. Thanks to an inspired shortcut of
02:17course. Sure, the origins of the titular icon's last name, among many other frustrating elements
02:21with
02:22within this dud of the flick, may not have excited the masses. But you'd be lying if
02:26you said you weren't
02:27even a little bit thrilled by this sequence of Solo finally living up to his legend.
02:318.
02:32Ahsoka comes faced with her acting as Anakin Skywalker's Padawan in her time before leaving
02:36the Jedi Order battle.
02:37fans were always somewhat curious as to what would have gone down if the former Master and
02:41Apprentice
02:42crossed paths once again in the wake of the former's tragic fall to the dark side.
02:46Well,
02:47March 2016's Twilight of the Apprentice Rebels hour-long special finale to Season 2
02:52finally provided SkyGuy supporters with that exact scenario. And boy did it deliver-
02:57on the emotional gut punch front, matching each other blow for blow during their instantly
03:01immortalized
03:02showdown on Malachor. Tano slashing of Vader's helmet stunningly mirrors the moment Obi-Wan
03:07Kenobi does something similar to his one-time ally in the recent live-action series.
03:12And just like that emotionally charged beat, a flicker of the Skywalker within is enough
03:16to fool a s***
03:17Ahsoka into thinking there's still hope for her former master, as she confesses that she
03:21won't leave-
03:22Believe him, not this time.
03:23It may have been something fans were fantasizing about for an age, but that's-
03:27still doesn't mean they were ready for Vader's attempts to murder another piece of his past.
03:31Number 7
03:32Maul vs. Kenobi one last time
03:34What appeared to be a rather fatal conclusion for Daniel
03:37Darth Maul during his Duel of the Fates skirmish with Obi-Wan Kenobi, merely provided the Foundation's
03:42for one of the most iconic rivalries in the galaxy.
03:45Spending much of the Clone Wars obsessed with ex-
03:47exacting revenge on the Jedi Knight, after being revealed to have miraculously survived
03:51his chopping-
03:52In half, the pair's destinies appeared to be forever intertwined.
03:55That was until Maul-
03:57Finally tracked down his long time adversary on Tatooine, many years after the fall of
04:01the Jedi Order and the-
04:02The Republic
04:03Maul and Kenobi collide on the desert sands as the former becomes wise to the-
04:07reasons behind the latter's stay on the planet.
04:09Short, sweet and deeply impactful.
04:12Kenobi aptly cuts down his old enemy using Qui-Gon's old stance.
04:16Brings a tear to your ass-
04:17But in another rather poetic turn of events, the tortured Dathomirian then peacefully-
04:22passes on in Kenobi's arms.
04:23With the knowledge of Luke very much being the chosen one tasked with avenging-
04:27them both.
04:28An appropriate ending fit for a horned icon.
04:316.
04:32The return of both-
04:32Boba Fett
04:33From the second, a certain Beskar sporting badass was accidentally sent flog-
04:37flying into a sarlacc pit.
04:38Fans were already banging the drum to see the return of the coolest bounty-
04:42hunter in the galaxy.
04:43And while few were expecting it to take a whopping near four decades to see-
04:47him dust off that aforementioned dance with death, the reality of Timura Morrison stepping back
04:52into-
04:52to the Fett saddle in Disney Plus' The Mandalorian after his turns as Django and many a clone.
04:57was enough to produce a smile from just about every Star Wars fan in the galaxy.
05:01Now sure, his long-
05:02awaited spin-off may not have quite lived up to the hype in the end.
05:05With The Book of Boba Fett's finest moments-
05:07arguably taking place without a Boba in sight-
05:09but the presence of this now multi-layered embattled-
05:12vessel-hardened daimyo will always be welcome on the big and small screen in future space-aged
05:17entries.
05:17So here's hoping Morrison gets his wish of bringing the legend back to his bad-ass ways-
05:22should he blast his way back into the Mandalorian or other corners of this galaxy far far away
05:27in the coming-
05:27in the coming years.
05:285.
05:29Luke Skywalker In His Prime
05:30Few Star Wars moments will have-
05:32never be able to match the sheer level of surprise conjured up by Dave Filoni and the gang.
05:36In the closing-
05:37of the stages of the second season of their Disney Plus live-action baby-
05:40going to frankly absurd-
05:42lengths to keep this undoubtedly moving return a secret-
05:45even digitally rendering a graphic-
05:47of Plo Koon's hair to lace on top of the performance to keep those behind the scenes from uncovering the shocking-
05:52truth.
05:53None other than Luke bloody Skywalker was unleashed on a troop of dark troopers late in the-
05:57day.
05:58Combining balmy digital de-aging effects when utilising Mark Hamill himself-
06:02with the performance of a very much present actor in the form of standing Max Lloyd-Jones.
06:07Plo Koon's not only witness the surreal visual of the mythical figure recruiting Grogu to his new Jedi Academy-
06:12but they were also treated to a sequence depicting Luke in full flight with a lightsaber-
06:17as he expertly dispatches the seemingly unstoppable Superbot horde.
06:20Whether you're a fan of the technology-
06:22used to realise this stunning moment or not, it still no doubt brought a tear to your eye seeing Luke-
06:27Luke Skywalker once again here to rescue you.
06:30Number 4, Darth Vader finally raging-
06:32Well, Luke Skywalker's eventual brandishing of his green blade in the Mandalorian brought with it a-
06:37sense of safe and secure familiarity.
06:39The same most definitely could not be said for the moment-
06:42which sees his pops unleashes iconic red blade aboard a rebel command ship in Rogue One.
06:47After years of clamouring to see a version of the uncompromising and freakishly powerful Vader-
06:52I haven't seen butcher many a rogue Jedi and innocent civilian in everything from comic books to video game pro-
06:57Gareth Edwards provided fans with a sort of display that leaves your jaw ricocheting off your knee-
07:02in an instant.
07:03Slicing and force choking his way through rebel scum like frustrating-
07:07Slicing gnats at a barbecue-
07:08The entire sequence plays out like something out of a horror flick, as the-
07:12Freedom fighters desperately sacrificed their lives in order to keep the vital Death Star schematics out of-
07:17his reach.
07:18It worked, but my god at a cost.
07:20Number 3, Han and Chewie arrive on the fal-
07:22From the second it became clear that Disney were very much ready to reignite the Skywalker saga-
07:27And set a brand new sequel trilogy in motion-
07:30A mixture of anxiousness and gloom-
07:32Lethal anticipation made its presence felt across the globe.
07:35But with each passing new trailer for J.J.
07:37Abrams' The Force Awakens, fears were gradually replaced with their unmatched hype.
07:42Yet one moment in particular was enough to send the entire internet into meltdown.
07:46Upon its drop-
07:47Topping in the film's second official teaser.
07:49The closing shot of Han Solo and bloody Chew-
07:52Backer, boarding their trusty Millennium Falcon, all but confirmed the incoming feature's record smash-
07:57watching future box office figures.
07:58And the moment the sequence actually go-downs within the film itself-
08:02Only builds on this wholly moving tease.
08:04As Solo is spotted taking in his old cockpit-
08:07And reminding Rey his baby made their castle run in 12 parsecs.
08:10It was like they'd never been gone at all-
08:12Number 2-
08:13The Yoda Puppet Returns-
08:14The use of CGI to completely reimagine-
08:17A certain wise old space wizard-
08:19Did not go down too well with every Star Wars fan around-
08:22In the time of Attack of the Clones.
08:23But that still didn't stop George Lucas from doubling down on his digitally-
08:27Surrendered Yoda for his Revenge of the Sith follow-up-
08:29And even entirely lacing his CGI creations-
08:32Into the Phantom Menace back in 2011.
08:34With Lucas wanting to depict the all-powerful Jedi very-
08:37Very much strutting his flipping stuff with a lightsaber over the course of the prequels-
08:40It's not hard to see why-
08:42He relied on his new favourite toy for the most part.
08:45Instead of the once game-changing puppetry-
08:47His new work used to bring Yoda to life previously.
08:49However, sensing that audiences would likely connect more-
08:52With that Frank Oz voiced and controlled entity-
08:54Than the rather soulless digital variant-
08:57Rian Johnson made the inspired call to bring the legendary puppeteer back on board.
09:01When the time came-
09:02For Yoda's Force Ghost to appear before Luke in The Last Jedi.
09:05The results clicked and then-
09:07Giving The Last Jedi one of its finest exchanges in the process.
09:11Number 1-
09:12Qui-Gon Jinn's Force Ghost
09:14Despite quite happily lending his vocal talents to the animated-
09:17version of Master Qui-Gon Jinn over the course of the Clone Wars series-
09:20Fans had still been praised-
09:22Waiting to one day see the live-action return of Liam Neeson's mysterious Jedi Master.
09:26So after-
09:27Spending the majority of his titular series trying and failing to commune with his fallen master-
09:32Seeing Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan finally reunite with his Phantom Menace co-star on the small screen-
09:36Was about-
09:37Not as surreal as it was undeniably effective-
09:39In luring folks into wanting to see more of the-
09:42The iconic duo in a second season.
09:44And while it's still not clear as to how Jinn was able to-
09:47Ultimately complete his training in the Force-
09:49To the point of being able to manifest himself physically-
09:52After death-
09:53Neeson's recent comments of not wanting anyone else to play the part-
09:56And only being too happy-
09:57To join back up with McGregor on screen-
09:59Seemed to suggest he could be open to sticking around-
10:02To show us should that potential second season be given the green lightsaber.
10:06That's the end of our-
