Sometimes a hero's origins are a complete mystery to the character AND readers.
Transcript
00:00While plenty of horror viewers spend their time hoping the cast won't get chopped up,
00:04it's safe...
00:05I have to say you'd be pretty disappointed if you left the theatre with a kill count of zero.
00:10Plus, there's always a guarantee that plenty of characters are about to meet their maker.
00:14But some...
00:15Sometimes you get a slap in the face as someone who you expected to bite the bullet makes it out.
00:20Now, there will be big spoilers for these movies ahead, so be warned.
00:25And with that in mind, I'm Ellie with WhatCulture, here with 10 unexpected horror movie...
00:30Number 10.
00:32The Mother in the Mist.
00:34As far as Stephen...
00:35As far as the King adaptations go, The Mist is one that stands tall as pretty decent.
00:39It told the story...
00:40Of a collection of people seeking refuge in a supermarket from a terrifying mist that engulfed their...
00:45town and brought with it some terrifying beasties.
00:47This character was so destined for the chopping block...
00:50that she didn't even get a name.
00:51Her fate seemed set after she left the safety of the grocery store and...
00:55ventured out into the titular mist to find her kids.
00:57Anyone used to horror knew the drill here.
00:59She...
01:00She was D to the E to the A to the D.
01:02But then...
01:03That ending came along.
01:05If you don't already know The Mist's gruelling ending, then you're in for a doozy.
01:09It showed...
01:10As the protagonist, his kid and a few survivors decided their situation was hopeless.
01:15Rather than being eaten by monsters, the hero decided to use a gun to end their suffering.
01:19But...
01:20But just after this happened, the mist cleared and out popped this lady, kids in...
01:25hand, having survived the whole ordeal and brought the cavalry to help.
01:28Oh dear god.
01:30So not only did she become an unexpected survivor, but she also became the catalyst...
01:35for one of horror's bleakest finales.
01:37Number 9.
01:38Carla Wilson is...
01:40And I still know what you did last summer.
01:42When Carla came along in the less than favourable...
01:45follow-up to the classic slasher hit, I know what you did last summer.
01:48Viewers could only think...
01:50one thing.
01:51Damn, this girl is toast.
01:52This is because she had not won, not too...
01:55but three classic horror tropes working against her.
01:58Yet, somehow she pulled...
02:00through with only some major scrapes.
02:02Carla was brought in to act as the protagonist's new best friend.
02:05after she lost all her closest pals in the previous film.
02:08This was her first sign of danger...
02:10as the leading character's best friend almost always bites the bullet.
02:13Then, there was the fact that she was a...
02:15black woman.
02:16Let's just say, statistically speaking, horror tends to get a little unfair when...
02:20it comes to picking its victims in that regard.
02:22And finally, there's the fact that she was played by the...
02:25famous musician Brandy.
02:26Typically, once a mainstream performer enters the horror movie frame...
02:30you can expect they won't get the same kind of royalties as in the music industry.
02:34To add in...
02:35result to all those injuries, she even suffered some...
02:37well...
02:38injuries.
02:39She took a fishhook to...
02:40the foot and even fell through a glass door.
02:42Still, once Julie returned to her hotel, she...
02:45found Carla safe and sound, albeit sporting a nasty limp.
02:49Number 8.
02:50Tennis.
02:50To see in Alien Covenant.
02:52The man made goofy jokes, wore a cowboy hat...
02:55and was played by the popular comedian Danny McBride.
02:58He had cannon fodder written all...
03:00all over him.
03:01The Alien franchise is one that's gone through heights as high as a spaceship and loads...
03:05as deep as the Mariana Trench.
03:07Alien Covenant sits there mostly in between the two...
03:10as a not-so-great but not-too-terrible chapter in the saga.
03:13Danny McBride's tennis...
03:15Nancy Faris was a welcome sight in the film, proposing a slightly more serious role for
03:19McBride.
03:20and adding a bit of variety to the cast.
03:22Still, it seemed rather obvious that he would find...
03:25himself dead at the hands of a rogue android or the terrifying Praetomorph.
03:29His character...
03:30who was never shown to be particularly savvy with survival.
03:33Hell, he was even the one who put everyone...
03:35in danger after getting hyped up on the transmission of someone singing Country Roads.
03:39But when the...
03:40finale came, he and Daniels made it off-world.
03:43Of course, the implication of the ending with...
03:45him stuck in hypersleep under the terrifying David did spell bad news for his future...
03:50But still, the fact that Kenny Powers made it all the way through the runtime of an Alien movie...
03:55is a miracle in itself.
03:57Number 7.
03:58Shigaharu Aiyama in Audition.
04:00If you've not had the chance to watch Takashi Miike's unsettling masterpiece...
04:05audition yet, then you'd better get on it.
04:07It tells the story of a widowed man who lets his friend set up...
04:10a mock movie audition with the purpose of finding him a new wife...
04:13because that's not creepy at all.
04:15This search results in him meeting the mysterious yet alluring Asami...
04:19who seems perfu...
04:20perfect.
04:21But, of course, things aren't always how they appear.
04:23Watching Audition seems like an inevitable...
04:25tumble into a gruesome murder, as it's clear Asami is gearing up for a brutal kill here...
04:30with Aiyama as the target.
04:32As their relationship sours and her sordid past reveals itself...
04:35you begin thinking he'd better start putting his affairs in order.
04:38The movie culminates with a shock...
04:40a shocking torture scene...
04:41where the unfortunate, if still creepy, auditioner gets drugged with a...
04:45paralytic agent...
04:46then has needles shoved in his face...
04:48and his foot sawed off with a wire.
04:50When...
04:50If you're watching this for the first time...
04:51you'd think you'll write on the money in predicting Aiyama's grisly end.
04:55But his son returns home...
04:57and after a struggle...
04:58Asami is left dead.
04:59Now...
05:00that...
05:01was unexpected.
05:02Number 6.
05:03Davey in Summer of 84.
05:05If you're sick and tired of the 80s nostalgia-heavy horror trend...
05:08that has overtaken Hollywood...
05:10in the last decade...
05:11then you might look at this flick as one to throw into the bargain bin.
05:14But if...
05:15if you did that...
05:16you'd be missing out on a stunning scary movie...
05:18with a well-executed mystery...
05:19and a...
05:20Charlie that will leave you reeling.
05:22While other kids his age were off skateboarding or wasting...
05:25quarters at the arcade...
05:26Davey obsesses over the macabre.
05:28This leads him to suspect that his...
05:30neighbor is a serial killer...
05:31so he and a group of friends...
05:33spend their summer investigating him.
05:35Well...
05:36talk about memories.
05:37It's eventually revealed that Davey's neighbor is in fact a serial killer...
05:40the film does a great job of keeping the mystery though...
05:43and he responds to his exposure...
05:45by kidnapping Davey and his friend Woody...
05:47and playing a game of manhunt with them.
05:49It seems odd...
05:50obvious that the movie will suffer a harrowing ending...
05:52with Davey meeting his maker...
05:54but it's somehow...
05:55even worse.
05:56Rather than killing him...
05:57the villain kills Woody...
05:58and forces Davey to...
06:00live...
06:01spending the rest of his life...
06:02feeling guilt...
06:03and paranoia that he might return.
06:05It's...
06:05utterly devastating...
06:06takes you by surprise...
06:07and makes you wonder if...
06:09in some twisted...
06:10that way...
06:11he might have been better off dead.
06:12Number 5.
06:13Kazan in Cube.
06:15Cube is a dizzyingly sick and slick sci-fi horror...
06:18that throws gore games and...
06:20an eye-catching aesthetic your way.
06:22It's also an incredibly subversive movie...
06:24that plays with the...
06:25archetypal roles...
06:26viewers have come to expect...
06:27from the horror genre.
06:28Especially by tricking you...
06:30into rooting for a hero...
06:31who eventually becomes the villain.
06:33Still...
06:34despite how many tropes the movie...
06:35challenges...
06:36it still surprised everyone...
06:37to see this character...
06:38become the sole survivor.
06:40When trapped inside the titular cube...
06:42the characters were forced...
06:43to complete games and trials...
06:44to survive...
06:45eventually...
06:46they stumbled across...
06:47a young man...
06:48with learning difficulties.
06:49This character...
06:50Kazan...
06:51ended up being...
06:52both a blessing...
06:53and a curse...
06:54as his ability...
06:55to perform high concepts...
06:55at mass...
06:56helped them navigate the cube...
06:57but his condition...
06:58also hindered...
06:59the group's involvement...
07:00in the games...
07:01and caused plenty of tension.
07:02Thanks to this...
07:03it seemed clear...
07:04that he would struggle...
07:05to make it...
07:05out alive.
07:06Not just because the games...
07:07were challenging...
07:08but because the terrifying...
07:09Quinton...
07:10seemed to have it...
07:10in for him...
07:11but in the end...
07:12not only did he...
07:13miraculously escape...
07:14but he was the only...
07:15one.
07:16Viewers were surprised...
07:17but also pretty delighted...
07:18as he was a genuinely...
07:19likeable...
07:20character.
07:21Number 4.
07:22Gabe in Us.
07:23A sweet...
07:24caring...
07:25funny...
07:26and likeable...
07:27dad.
07:28Oh yeah...
07:29that guy's dead.
07:30He's dead...
07:31before the opening credits...
07:30even start rolling.
07:31Wait...
07:32he survives?
07:33Woah!
07:34Fair play Gabe!
07:35Fair play...
07:35It's common in horror...
07:36to create...
07:37a likeable figure...
07:38to kill...
07:39and use as a catalyst...
07:40for killing...
07:40character development.
07:41Not only did Gabe...
07:42have the vibe...
07:43of a dead dad...
07:44floating all around him...
07:45but he even made...
07:46a slew of mistakes...
07:47that seemed to be...
07:48leading up to his demise...
07:49for example...
07:50in...
07:50one scene...
07:51he left his family...
07:52behind in the house...
07:53to approach...
07:54the creepy strangers...
07:55outside...
07:55the oldest man...
07:56ever seen...
07:57a horror film?
07:58Of course...
07:59every family member...
08:00survived...
08:00was a huge surprise. It seemed clear that at least one of them would perish as that's what you expect
08:05from horror and Gabe seems like the most likely candidate. Number three, Chris
08:10may in the hunt. Sometimes being outside the 1% can make it
08:15feel like the odds are stacked against you. So imagine a movie where wealthy elites hunt down
08:19the world.
08:20You probably shouldn't expect to come out of that day trip with your head intact. That's where
08:25Crystal May comes in. Played impressively by Betty Gilpin, Crystal is the Rambo-like
08:30hero of this thriller as she takes the fight to the hunters and shows they've bitten off more than
08:34they did.
08:35Although she's undeniably badass, it was still a surprise when she reached the end credit.
08:40She's an unexpected survivor on two counts. The first is that the film deliberately
08:44suckers you in with fake-out protagonists. You follow Emma Roberts at first, assuming she's
08:49the lead, then boom, bullet in the head. The same thing happens with Ike Barinholtz's character Off
08:54afterwards. Thus, everyone expected to have the rug pulled out from under them again after Chris-
08:59Crystal took over, but she was not such a weakling. The other unexpected survival factor
09:04came during her savage showdown at the film's climax. She and the villain Athena tore the-
09:09place down, and both suffered fatal wounds, implying mutually assured destruction. But-
09:14once the dust had settled, she managed to hop up, fix her injuries, and stroll away with a nice bottle-
09:19of champagne. Crystal, you earned those bubbles.
09:22Number two, John P-
09:24the last in Possessor. There are a lot of things you need to suspend your disbelief for in a sci-
09:29movie like this. You've got technology capable of letting assassins possess people near their-
09:34targets, secret organizations, and all sorts of sci-fi elements that you've got to believe for the-
09:39film to work. Still, while all of that stuff is easy, the toughest pill to swallow-
09:44is having to believe that Sean Bean, of all people, survives this horror movie. What?
09:49The film follows an assassin called Voss, and the role Bean plays is Voss's prime-
09:54target. So not only does John Pass have the Sean Bean death stink running against him-
09:59but he's also the sole focus of the protagonist's death gaze for a good chunk of the movie.
10:04Things-
10:04They seem as if they're geared for another Lord of the Rings or GoldenEye 4 Bean, as Voss Brutus-
10:09attacks him with a fire poker, causing buckets worth of blood and seeming like the end for him-
10:14But in a shocking turn of events, it's revealed later on that he somehow survived this attack-
10:19It's almost as if Sean Bean stood up and said, nope, I'm done, this time I refuse to die-
10:24Number 1, Ted Bowen in Friday the 13th Part 2
10:29This guy might as well have a sign over his head saying, come on Jason, don't be shy!
10:34He was goofy, geeky, and a real jokester. All the hallmarks of a future member of-
10:39the Friday the 13th body count. Yet against all the odds, he made one wise decision-
10:44and managed to make it out alive. The sequel to the first Friday the 13th movie needed fresh-
10:49to quench the thirst of Jason's debuting machete. It was his first time taking on the main-
10:54major slaying duties for himself, which is why the crew of Cannon Fodder alongside the returning-
10:59Alice Hardy was served up on a plate. Ted seemed like he'd be top of the menu-
11:04on that crew, but he got out of dodge at the right time. Had Ted actually remained in-
11:09camp Crystal Lake, he likely would have found himself meeting a grisly end. But the last you ever saw-
11:14of the character was him asking about bars in the local area before sauntering off to get-
11:19from there, he never returned, and it's safe to assume he probably didn't run into-
11:24Jason in the bathroom of a run-down late-night bar. He survived thanks to his need to party-
11:29now that's certainly one way to do it. And that concludes our list. If you think we missed any-
