00:00climate change is bringing with it all
00:06sorts of dangers from extreme heat to
00:08drought to rising sea levels and water
00:10scarcity however now according to
00:12researchers from Emory University in
00:14Georgia global warming is also making
00:16our planet venomous snakes even more
00:18dangerous it's long been known that
00:20snake behavior changes with the seasons
00:22however now the researchers have found a
00:24direct link between the temperature
00:25rising and your chances of being bitten
00:27they came to this conclusion by looking
00:29at 3908 venomous snake related hospital
00:32visits between the years 2014 and 2020
00:35finding that for every single degree
00:37Celsius of temperature increase there was
00:39a 6% increased chance of being bitten by
00:41one of these snakes they had that while
00:43they can't provide a direct reason for
00:44why this occurs it's likely due to
00:46multiple factors one of those is that
00:48snakes and humans are more active when
00:49the weather is warmer meaning people are
00:51likely treading in snake territory while
00:53those snakes are also moving around and
00:55alert however there seems to be a
00:56threshold as well as spring actually had
00:58the highest association between higher
01:00temperatures and snake bites according to
01:02the World Health Organization there are
01:04over 5 million venomous snake bites
01:06reported every year resulting in upwards of
01:08of 138,000 deaths
