00:00Hi.
00:01Hi.
00:02Oh, Pandora!
00:03Pandora!
00:04Pandora!
00:05What you need to do is get control of Pandora.
00:06If dogs go wild…
00:09They are absolutely nuts.
00:12Is the dog around?
00:14No!
00:15I can't control them.
00:17Come on now, big boy.
00:18Nathan thinks he can read.
00:19Surely he can.
00:20He can't.
00:21Is it a dog?
00:22Of course he can.
00:23And get up.
00:24Oh, there we go.
00:25No, get down.
00:26To no good.
00:27It's not with me now, is it?
00:28I'm honoured.
00:29Or down.
00:30Oh, no.
00:31And dirty.
00:32He loves a big, large crap.
00:35Oh.
00:36Tank likes to rub his boy part.
00:40What is going on with you, Tank?
00:42When pups…
00:43I wonder what we're going to learn today.
00:45…need to be schooled.
00:46Three, two, one, and sit.
00:48Fantastic.
00:49Look at that.
00:50Or if your pooch…
00:52He's dropped one.
00:53He got a whiff.
00:54…has a personal problem.
00:56Some dogs have bacterias that are gas-producing.
00:59Just in case…
01:01One man…
01:02Hey, look at that.
01:04…will give it his all…
01:06Jack, oi!
01:07Leave it.
01:08…and get answers…
01:09I think I might know what's going on.
01:11And it's not what you think.
01:12…to any doggy dilemma.
01:14Yeah, that's next level, isn't it?
01:15You're right?
01:16Stop it!
01:17This week…
01:18Oh, no.
01:19…a cockapoo's dirty obsession…
01:20Ugh.
01:21Straight out of her backside as well.
01:22…is turning an entire community's stomach.
01:23It is the most gross thing that I've ever seen.
01:24No!
01:25…back at Graham's puppy school…
01:26Grab a seat, by the way.
01:27…a new student disrupts class…
01:28Don't do it.
01:29…he's like, blimey, okay, first day at school.
01:30…and could this be the most destructive dog ever?
01:31He's caught me.
01:32Crikey, I mean, he's next level, that dog.
01:34I don't remember walking into a house and seeing it quite like that.
01:36Thousands of pounds of stuff that's…
01:37…that's a real dog that's…
01:38…was that a real dog.
01:39…that's a real dog.
01:40…is turning an entire community's stomach…
01:41…is turning an entire community's stomach.
01:43…it's the most gross thing that I've ever seen.
01:44No!
01:45…back at Graham's puppy school…
01:46…a new student disrupts class…
01:47…and could this be the most destructive dog ever?
01:50…he's caught me.
01:51Crikey, I mean, he's next level, that dog.
01:53level that dog. I don't remember walking into a house and seeing it quite like that. Thousands
01:57of pounds of stuff that he's destroyed. But who's really to blame for the carnage? Is
02:03Grandad tough or soft? Soft. Graham's at home, fueling up for a full-on week ahead. Beacon,
02:15you can't beat it, can you? I'm a man of simple taste, really, but I know when to stop. But
02:21I'm going to go see a dog who will eat and eat and eat. So I'm going to make sure I've eaten this
02:26bacon, but see if you want to get anywhere near him or it'll be gone. Over in Bexley,
02:33South East London, beauty therapist Trish, Cockapoo Huey and his mum, Lucy, are desperate for Graham's
02:43help. I'm really excited to meet Graham today. Hopefully he can help me with this situation.
02:49Graham needn't have worried about that bacon sarnie. What's he doing? Oh, no. Ten-month-old
02:59Huey is after a much dirtier breakfast. Straight out of her backside as well. Huey, stop, stop.
03:09Dirty boy. Stop. Morning, you must be Trish. Yes, I am. Nice to meet you. Yeah. That's not very nice.
03:19No. Don't you feed him? I definitely feed him. But he just prefers dog sausage, doesn't he? Yeah. Yeah.
03:27Huey seems to be taking the poo in Cockapoo very literally. Huey! Huey's favourite snack in the
03:34whole wide world is definitely a big, large crap. Huey! Stop it! The smellier and the more fresh it is,
03:43the better. So fresh. Huey, stop. He doesn't wait for it to hit the ground. He will try to eat it
03:50directly as it's coming out of their bums. Oh, my God. Huey! He'd probably eat as much as he can,
03:59like it would literally be a poo buffet. Huey, stop. And he's not picky. Is he eating more poo?
04:06Oh, yeah. Other dog walkers, they must be thinking it's really disgusting. No, Huey.
04:14It makes me feel completely sick. Oh, no. Not the sort of thing you want to be seeing,
04:20especially not first thing in the morning. Huey! No matter how fast Trish is... Stop it!
04:25Huey still pops up in the right place for a whiffy Mr Whippy.
04:29Huey has got a detector for when dogs are laying down their poo. It's like he can hear it coming
04:37down the intestines. It must be like when you hear the ice cream fan coming and it's all like,
04:42doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo. Huey! He can hear that coming from the dog's arse, basically. Stop it!
04:53Don't know if it's a behavioural issue or if it's something more serious, like a deficiency that
04:59he has. So it would be good to get to the bottom of it. No pun intended. To stop Huey's horrid habit,
05:07naughty boy. Graham needs to know what's causing it. Why do you think he does it? I have no idea.
05:15I wish I knew. Okay. I wish I knew, I'll be honest. Yeah. It's not as rare as you think to see a dog
05:20eat poo. Yeah. But it's really rare to see a dog do what your dog's doing. I know. You know,
05:26straight from the source. Oh God, he's doing it again. Huey! Ugh. Dirty dog. Do you worry about,
05:37you know, what could be in that poo? Definitely. There have been times I've had to take Huey to the
05:43vets, um, not long ago actually, and the vets said that he had colitis and that it was likely the
05:50cause was from eating so much poo. So that's inflammation of the colon. This is one of those
05:56cases that's kind of funny on the surface and you have a bit of a, oh no, giggle about it. But
06:01once you've got over that, you realise that actually this is quite serious. So Lucy's mum,
06:08Huey's the son of, how come you ended up with the two of them? Lucy, when she was given birth,
06:13we found out that she actually had 10 puppies inside. Wow. And unfortunately, two of the puppies
06:18were stuck in the birth canal. Huey was the only survivor. Oh wow. Out of all 10? Yeah. Out of
06:24the whole 10. Lucy was so unwell after the birth, Trish had to step in. When he was a baby and he was
06:32born, I had to hand rear him and he would just love to have skin connection. It was almost like
06:39having a real baby. Sole survivor Huey and Trish became inseparable. I love Lucy, but the bond
06:48is even stronger with Huey, which is why I really don't want to have to think about rehoming him.
06:56How do you feel about this for the next 15 years? I need to be able to find a solution to deal with
07:03this because it's just disgusting. Yeah. I love him, but this has got to stop. But there's a serious
07:10worry. All right. Graham's concerned Huey's dirty addiction isn't behavioural, but medical. Because this
07:18is so unusual, I just wonder whether there might be something else going on here. So I really want
07:23to take a bit of advice. Huey! Doing what he's doing is putting him in danger, real danger.
07:29If she lost this dog, 10 out of 10 puppies, can you imagine how that would be?
07:35Coming up, Graham's search for answers takes a turn.
07:39So a lot of cockapoos with this kind of puppy. 50% of my intake is a cockapoo or something poo.
07:45Which could derail any hopes for fixing it. Okay, so we've got our first set of results.
07:52Back at Graham's puppy school, a juvenile delinquent. Super distracted, eh? Yeah, he's just not
07:58interested. Yeah. Is vying for class clown. You know when you said you wanted an energetic
08:03dog? And a Labrador with an appetite for destruction. We used to have a nice rug down here,
08:09dining room table. Is leaving a grandad isolated. We used to have family social gatherings here in
08:15the garden. It's not like that now, which affects my dad massively.
08:25What's he doing? Graham's in Bexley, South East London. Oh no.
08:31Where pooey Huey's horrid hunger for piping hot. Ugh. Huey, stop. Doggy do's. The smellier and the more
08:41fresh it is, the better. Is stressing out Trish. Oh God, he's doing it again. Huey, stop. And leaving
08:47fellow dog walkers horrified. Not the sort of thing you want to be seeing, especially not first thing
08:52in the morning. Stop, stop, stop. It's really important that we knock this problem on the head
08:57because Patricia's extremely embarrassing. And I'm also thinking sooner or later, he's going to pick
09:03on the one dog that really, really doesn't like it. Graham fears it's more than bad behaviour. Huey,
09:10stop. And a medical issue could derail any training. Because this is so unusual, I just want to take
09:17some advice from a vet that I know, I've worked with before. Dr. Charlotte Gray is a veterinary surgeon
09:23with a focus on clinical nutrition. Charlie, this is Trish. Hiya. Hello. And Huey. So what reasons
09:32are there for a dog eating poo? There are a few. Some dogs learn it because as puppies, their mum will
09:38eat the poo to keep the nest clean. And actually there are some puppies who will start doing that
09:43and just never really stop. Huey was an only pup. And all that extra fuss from his furry mum
09:49may have shaped his horrid habit. But there could be a genetic quirk at play too.
09:56He is a cockapoo. Based on my client base in the nutrition clinic, that always makes me a little
10:02bit suspicious that maybe there's a reason that started it off. So a lot of cockapoos with this
10:06kind of problem. Yeah. A disproportionate number of cockapoos that have got odd food behaviours.
10:1150% of my intake is a cockapoo or a something poo who actually have an illness that's causing
10:17them some discomfort or some nausea. Which sounds back to front, given that you'd think if they felt
10:23sick that eating poo would be the last thing on your mind. It's never worked for me. No. It's never
10:28been my favourite hand in the cure. With cockapoos prone to tummy troubles, Huey may be eating poo
10:34because he's uncomfortable. So it'd be nice if we could have a look at him, I think, have a feel of
10:38his tummy. Come with him, baby. Sorry, Huey, you're not the smallest cockapoo, are you? He's not, is he?
10:43Hello. Well, he's at his phone this morning. How are you? Oh, great. That's lucky you. Don't lick
10:46me face. Good boy. Well done. First, a once-over to check for soreness. He's not tense at all. He
10:55doesn't seem too worried. With no obvious signs of pain, a blood test could show if anything's off.
11:01Almost done. Okay, well done. So that's Huey's blood. The only test we've got left to do is the
11:10poo test. Collect some poo in one of these poo pots. That will tell us whether there's inflammation
11:17high up his gut. The poo test will take a few weeks, but with a lab on site, his bloods can
11:23be checked straight away. Okay, so we've got our first set of results. And so far, it's good news.
11:29He's not got any signs of anemia. He's got no signs of infection. So, overall, this is
11:35normal. Am I okay to carry on with some training? Yes. Well, so far, so reassuring, I think.
11:40Yeah, thank you very much. No, pleasure. Hopefully we get him sorted out. Yeah. All right, well,
11:45crack on. While there's still more results to come back, the blood tests point to Huey's
11:50poo passion as a learned behaviour, not a medical one. Well, I'm glad we've got the go-ahead
11:56to do the training, which is great. Except, I don't know how I'm going to do it.
12:01Huey! No! I mean, think about it. Dog training is all about repetition, and I'm going to have
12:07to get Huey to step away from the poo repeatedly, which means I'm going to have to get a load of
12:11dogs to sort of poo on command. Otherwise, we're going to be there all day.
12:16Graham's ready to get his hands dirty, but cracking Huey's filthy fixation will take more
12:22than a whiff of inspiration. In the meantime, he's back in Bicester in Oxfordshire, where
12:30he's recently opened his new puppy school.
12:33I started my journey as a professional dog trainer, doing dog and particularly puppy classes,
12:39and then I kind of moved away from that, and I've been going around the country, helping
12:43people with badly behaved dogs. Quite nice to work with puppies again.
12:46He's brought together a class of new puppy owners to guide them through the key training
12:51milestones.
12:52Good girl! I wonder what we're going to learn today!
12:56From around 12 weeks old, puppies need clear, focused lessons to shape good behaviour.
13:02You're going to be wild trying by the end of this.
13:05Graham knows only too well...
13:07Oh, no!
13:08Without that early guidance...
13:10Oi! No!
13:11These cuties can grow into his usual clientele.
13:15No, Kevin!
13:17Ow!
13:19The last lesson was all about socialisation.
13:22When things start to go a little bit iffy, don't look nervous.
13:25By around 12 weeks, fully vaccinated pups can finally get out and explore, helping them
13:31get used to the sights, sounds and smells around them.
13:35Good boy, Tony!
13:36Good boy!
13:37Good boy!
13:37Let's get a motorbike, sonny!
13:38Yeah.
13:38Well, today's milestone is something that's as fundamental for dogs as, well, like the
13:46ABCs, one, two, threes, for little humans.
13:48So it's really important that they get this.
13:50Returning are Rescue Winnie, Family Dog Sydney, Break Up Pop Boo and Farm Dog Mr. Todd, and
14:00introducing new student Loki.
14:03Are you all excited?
14:05Lorraine, come on through!
14:06So, nice to meet you.
14:09You all right?
14:10So, so Loki, he's a Vizsler, isn't he?
14:13He is, yeah.
14:13Hungarian Vizsler.
14:14Grab a seat, by the way.
14:16Yeah.
14:18Oh, dear.
14:19Oh, hello.
14:19Looks like Winnie needs more socialisation training.
14:23Oh, dear.
14:24He's like, blimey, OK, first day at school.
14:27Yeah.
14:28Winnie.
14:29Come here.
14:30Well, welcome to our little merry band.
14:32How old is he?
14:33He's 15 weeks.
14:3415 weeks.
14:35He's a big lad for 15 weeks, isn't he, eh?
14:36Yeah.
14:38Recently retired Child Protection Officer Lorraine isn't putting her feet up just yet.
14:43My plans with Loki are to go on adventures.
14:47He's a breed that loves to run and explore, and so I'm hoping that we can go off and do
14:53that when he's a bit bigger.
14:55It's not going to be a quiet retirement at all.
14:58It's going to be an exciting one.
15:01You made a good choice there, then.
15:02Oh, yeah.
15:02They're definitely energetic.
15:04I'll give you that.
15:04I know.
15:04Today, we're moving on a bit.
15:08There's a really essential set of skills that I want to teach you, and these are all about
15:13building a bond, teaching the dogs how to respond to your cues.
15:17Basically, we're going to tell them to do something and teach them how to do it.
15:21Vocal cues or commands are a big early lesson.
15:25The first are sit and stay, which aren't just good manners.
15:29They're about safety, keeping pups out of trouble.
15:33Hello, Mr Todd.
15:33When it comes to teaching sit, Graham has a tip.
15:38Actions speak louder than words.
15:41So he's not sitting.
15:43First, Graham gets Mr Todd's attention with a treat, then raises it up.
15:48We move it over his head.
15:50And he naturally sits down.
15:52Good.
15:53There you go.
15:54Now, can anybody tell me what I'm not doing?
15:57You didn't say the word sit.
15:59Bang on.
16:00Why would I not be saying sit?
16:01We are doing sit training, after all.
16:03Because he doesn't know what it means.
16:05He doesn't know what it means.
16:06You're absolutely right, Lorraine.
16:07First, we get him doing the action, playing a game.
16:10Oh, right.
16:11I touched my bum on the ground.
16:13You give me one of those treats.
16:14Then and only then do we start to say sit.
16:17We do say actions speak louder than words.
16:20We do say actions speak louder than words.
16:20And we're human.
16:21We're pretty good at words.
16:23Puppies aren't so good.
16:25That's why I always teach action first and then tell them the word.
16:29So by prompting the action, Graham then adds the keyword.
16:35Sit.
16:35And by repeating, he connects the word to the action.
16:41Good.
16:42After just a few attempts, he's got it.
16:46Good boy.
16:48And that's a general principle you're going to see in all doctrine.
16:51You show them what you mean and then you label it.
16:54You give it a name.
16:55That's your cue.
16:57Off you go.
16:57Can the class copy Graham's success?
17:01Sit.
17:02Mr. Todd is first to understand.
17:05Sit.
17:06Soon rescue pup Winnie.
17:08Good girl.
17:09Sit.
17:10Little Boo.
17:10Look at that.
17:11And finally Sydney.
17:12Sit.
17:13All master the vocal cue.
17:16Sit.
17:16But new boy Loki.
17:17Move your hand up, Lorraine.
17:19Doesn't seem interested in studying.
17:21Super distracted, eh?
17:22Yeah, he's just not interested.
17:24No.
17:25He just wants to play.
17:26So if you get your treat, so, hey, hey, hey, what's this?
17:31Up and above, but not to a jumping point.
17:34Boom.
17:34There you go.
17:35Does that make sense?
17:35Yeah.
17:36So you're doing that with it?
17:37Yeah.
17:37You're luring him into position.
17:39Have your treat ready and I'll give you a chance.
17:41For Loki, Lorraine's treats are no match to playing with another pup.
17:46You know when you said you wanted an energetic dog, right?
17:50Half the work in puppy training is getting and keeping their attention.
17:53And Loki is younger than the others.
17:56Lorraine is having a bit of a hard time.
17:58But the worst thing she can do right now is give up.
18:02And Graham's come prepared.
18:04Right.
18:05Let's try something different.
18:06A much tastier treat.
18:08Oh, you like that, don't you?
18:09Sit.
18:10Instantly gets Loki's attention.
18:13Great.
18:13With Loki back on task, it's time for the pup's first oral exam.
18:18Right.
18:18Let's see if we can get all the dogs to sit at the same time if I cure you.
18:23So if we get them all standing up.
18:25Three.
18:25Three.
18:27Two.
18:29One.
18:31Sit.
18:32Sit.
18:32Good boy.
18:33Fantastic.
18:34Look at that.
18:34It's a great start.
18:36How are we feeling about it?
18:37Happy?
18:38Yeah.
18:38Good.
18:38So the next lesson is going to be stay.
18:41But here's the catch.
18:43I want you to get your dogs to stay without ever saying the word stay.
18:49Coming up, Graham's giving the pups the silent treatment.
18:56It's got me.
18:57He meets a Labrador ransacking a retiree's home.
19:00We've always had birthdays and different events here.
19:04Since I've had Ziggy, we haven't been able to do that.
19:07And will Pooey Huey...
19:09Are you ready?
19:10...kick his filthy fix.
19:11Now, go on, call him.
19:13Huey!
19:20Graham Hall's new puppy school is up and running.
19:23And today he's teaching his four-legged pupils...
19:26Sit.
19:27...queues or commands.
19:28Good boy!
19:29So far, they've learnt sit.
19:32Three, two, one, sit.
19:34Sit.
19:35Good boy.
19:36Fantastic.
19:36Look at that.
19:37Graham's next lesson is stay.
19:40There are lots of times when we might want a dog to stay or wait,
19:43just hang fire, basically.
19:45We might be crossing the road, we might be about to go through again.
19:48When it comes to stay, Graham's tip, silence is golden.
19:54And to demonstrate...
19:55Would you take a seat for a second, please?
19:58Certainly.
19:58Thank you very much.
20:00Good.
20:01But sometimes we need our dogs to sit or lie down for a period of time.
20:05Normally we think of that as maybe stay or even wait.
20:08And I do that without saying either of those two words.
20:11Is he still sat there?
20:13He is, yeah.
20:13He sure is.
20:14He is, yeah.
20:15Why is he sat there?
20:18I was told to.
20:20Did anybody say stay?
20:22No.
20:23Point being, why don't we teach dogs that sit means sit and keep sitting?
20:29Wouldn't that be simpler?
20:29Yeah.
20:31You can join the group now, Colin.
20:32Thank you very much for helping out there.
20:34Making a dog sit and stay has two challenges, time and distance.
20:39How far you can move away from the dog before they give chase.
20:43First, Graham's tackling time.
20:45Hello, boo.
20:47Come with me.
20:48There you go.
20:49Come on then.
20:50Hello.
20:51You know how to do sit, don't you?
20:53Sit.
20:54Good.
20:55There you go.
20:57Sit.
20:58Ah, no.
21:01Good.
21:02So she's beginning to learn when he says sit and I sit, maybe there's a gap in time.
21:07Now, Graham extends the time he makes her sit before giving the treat.
21:12Maybe it's a second or two before I actually get it.
21:15Sit.
21:18Good.
21:19Clever girl.
21:21I wasn't counting.
21:22What was that, five seconds?
21:23And before long, boo's patiently sitting for 20 seconds.
21:27How many times did I say stay?
21:30No.
21:30No times.
21:31Don't need it, do you?
21:32Sit and keep sitting is what we're teaching them, yeah?
21:35Distance is the next challenge and Graham needs a new volunteer.
21:39Now, to start with, good boy, I'll take a step back, step back in.
21:45Good boy.
21:47There's no point going ten feet backwards because he ain't got the hang of that, yeah?
21:51There you go.
21:53Good boy.
21:54Sit.
21:55For the pups, the game is easy.
21:58Sit.
21:58Don't move and the treat will come to you.
22:01A couple of little steps, yeah?
22:03Good boy.
22:04That's all right.
22:04We dropped it.
22:06Sit.
22:06Good, clever boy.
22:11And then we build it up from there.
22:12And within just a few minutes...
22:16Oh, good boy.
22:17You nearly fell backwards.
22:19Good boy.
22:21There you go.
22:21Go on, then.
22:22That'll do.
22:23Can the group get their pups to sit and stay without saying a word?
22:29Just to add a bit of spice to it, that's the finish line.
22:32If you can get as far as this finish line, even for a second or two, fantastic.
22:38All right, team, best of luck.
22:39Three, two, one, off you go.
22:42To pass the test, each pup must sit and stay until their human returns from the finish line.
22:48He's it.
22:49Robert and Winnie take an early lead.
22:52You're nearly there.
22:53Keep going.
22:54Another step.
22:57Well done, Rob.
22:58You've nailed it.
22:59Go back and feed your dog.
23:00Fantastic.
23:01Good.
23:01One down, four to go.
23:04That's it.
23:05What's the team game going on here with Mary and Colin?
23:08Tony.
23:08Very good.
23:09While Loki and Mr. Todd distract each other, Ruby, with Sidney, is almost over the line.
23:17You're there, girl.
23:18On you go.
23:18But Sidney's enthusiasm gets the better of him.
23:21Oh, no.
23:22Do you know what?
23:22I'm not going to allow that, Ruby, because your dog broke the sit at the last minute.
23:26Try again.
23:27You had it, Roots.
23:28Tony.
23:29Good.
23:30Nice.
23:30Good boy.
23:31Oh.
23:32Good boy.
23:33Okay.
23:33All right.
23:34Good boy.
23:34Well done.
23:35Good boy.
23:35Well done, Ruby.
23:36Right.
23:37Off you go.
23:38This time...
23:39Super.
23:39Keep going.
23:40Keep going.
23:40Wait.
23:41You nailed it.
23:42Well done.
23:42You're finished.
23:42Brilliant.
23:43Super.
23:44While Lorraine struggles with Loki, Colin's steaming ahead with Mr. Todd.
23:49That's it.
23:49You're getting there, Colin.
23:50That's it.
23:50One more step.
23:52Right, mate.
23:52Back to your dog.
23:53Well done.
23:53Brilliant.
23:53And Charlotte and little Boo...
23:57All right, Charlotte.
23:58You're nearly there.
23:59Are taking things easy.
24:01Oh, very good.
24:02All right.
24:03I'm all right with that.
24:04Leaving just new pup Loki and Lorraine.
24:07I think Loki's struggling because it's a new environment, lots of new friends that he wants
24:18to interact with.
24:20I don't seem to exist when they're there.
24:23If Loki's ever to become Lorraine's travelling buddy, he needs to learn to listen.
24:29Sit.
24:34Oh, lovely.
24:35And after ten long minutes...
24:37Well done, Lorraine.
24:38That's better.
24:39...he's finally got it.
24:41Good boy.
24:42It's a good boy.
24:42Well done.
24:43Good boy.
24:44Well, I think give yourselves a round of applause, everybody.
24:47I think you did really well there.
24:48Me?
24:49Fantastic.
24:49Good.
24:50All right.
24:51They've all got their own abilities.
24:54You know, some dogs it was easier than others.
24:56For Loki, it's his first day at puppy school.
24:58You know, I think he's done amazingly well.
25:00It's his first time interacting with so many dogs and playing with them.
25:04And then the learning.
25:05Yeah, really enjoyed it.
25:07Loved it.
25:07And, yeah, just so worth it.
25:10Next time, more milestones.
25:12But in the meantime, do go away and practice, obviously.
25:15The hard work starts when you leave here.
25:17And send me those little videos.
25:18I'd love to see how you're getting on.
25:19Graham believes puppy training, getting those crucial boundaries in early, is what sets
25:25up a well-behaved dog.
25:27And his next case, just down the road in Oxford, shows exactly what happens when there are no
25:33boundaries.
25:40Molly, hello.
25:41Hi, Graham.
25:41Hi.
25:41Hi.
25:42Nice to meet you.
25:43Lauren, yeah?
25:43Yep, Lauren.
25:44And?
25:45Zachary.
25:45Zachary.
25:46Hello, Zachary.
25:47Come on in.
25:48Come into the kennel.
25:49Lauren's called Graham to help her dad, Richard.
25:51But maybe the police might have been more appropriate.
25:55Looks like the place has been ransacked.
25:58Graham.
25:58Nice to meet you.
25:58Nice to meet you.
25:59Richard, yeah?
26:00Yep, that's right.
26:00Nice to meet you, Richard.
26:01And the culprit, Courtred Pored.
26:04That's Ziggy, is it?
26:06Yes, you can see what we're...
26:07Hello, Ziggy.
26:08Hello.
26:08See what we're up against.
26:09Oh, blimey.
26:10I see.
26:10So he destroys sock furnishings, does he?
26:13He does.
26:13Anything he can get his teeth round.
26:15He's a bit bare, isn't he?
26:16Yeah.
26:17It is, literally.
26:18Yeah.
26:18It's a kennel.
26:19It's his kennel.
26:20Since arriving, 20-month-old Ziggy has systematically destroyed everything in recently retired engineer
26:27Richard's house.
26:29He's got me.
26:29I've not known anybody that's had a dog that's destroyed things like Ziggy does.
26:35Right.
26:35Let go.
26:36Because if there is something within reach, he will grab it.
26:39And while you're taking that off him...
26:41Right.
26:43He can be taking the handkerchief out your pocket.
26:46Oh, Ziggy!
26:48We would be talking thousands of pounds of stuff that he's destroyed.
26:52Richard's not exaggerating.
26:55This used to be his best settee.
26:57He's slowly demolished that over, like, an 18-month period.
27:01It's a little bit uncomfortable.
27:04I find it very stressful because you can't rest and relax for one minute.
27:09No wonder.
27:10There's nowhere left to relax.
27:12It's preventing me from having a peaceful time.
27:17It's preventing people visiting, particularly my grandchildren.
27:23Proud granddad of three, Richard's house used to be the hub of family celebrations.
27:28We've always had birthdays, Christmases, and different events here, with all the family coming over and enjoying time here.
27:38But unfortunately, since I've had Ziggy, we haven't been able to do that.
27:43And if grandson Zach does visit, playtime's under lock and key.
27:47This is a toy cupboard, and also where Zach can sit and do some colouring or painting.
27:54We can't get it out because the dog's just potentially going to come in and take something.
28:00The rest of the family think I'm mad because they think I should be able to control him a bit better.
28:07The table is on top of there.
28:10I did notice there was a table on your sofa.
28:11Yeah, it's upside down, because it stops him actually making a hole in the setting.
28:16And I've saved the cushions.
28:18Oh, are you?
28:19They're upstairs.
28:20So anything that can be moved, I've moved.
28:24Do you know, if you played the game of who would live in a house like this, you would, I reckon, you would say,
28:28oh, that's a student digs, isn't it?
28:30We used to have a nice rug down here, a great big rug.
28:33We had a dining room table.
28:35So, yeah, it's very bare, isn't it?
28:38You definitely wouldn't think a retired gentleman enjoying his time surrounded by all the things that you collect over a lifetime.
28:45He's brought it back here.
28:47He's starting to rip that up, you know.
28:49Go on, then, how do you get it off me?
28:50You see if you can catch him, Zach.
28:51All right, Zach's your man.
28:53Oh, he's fast.
28:55Yes.
28:57Right.
28:57Oh, I see.
28:59Now, let go, Ziggy.
29:01Ah, no.
29:03He's like, I've got it, I'm not that good.
29:05He's not letting that go, is he?
29:06Now, what's the solution?
29:08Well, the solution that I've found is not to leave anything out.
29:12Right.
29:13Richard's fix to Ziggy's destructive behaviour...
29:16He will eventually give up on it.
29:18..has been to simply ignore it.
29:21There.
29:22Ah, well done.
29:23..it's not just Grandad's house that's wrecked.
29:26His garden looks like no-man's land.
29:29Oh, blimey.
29:30Have you had many unexploded bombs around here?
29:32Ziggy's impact has been genuinely devastating.
29:36Zach and his Grandad are really close,
29:38and it is so nice that they have such a bond...
29:41Yeah.
29:41..that they're unable to interact the same way as they did.
29:44We used to have family social gatherings here in the garden.
29:47Everyone would come here.
29:48This was the hub.
29:50It's not like that now.
29:51No.
29:51You know, we don't have social gatherings here,
29:54which affects my dad massively.
29:56What's your take on the way he treats the dog?
30:00My dad's very soft-natured.
30:01He's not one to raise his voice.
30:03Right.
30:03So I think the dog kind of takes advantage of him a bit.
30:08This is not a dog who was born to be the bossiest dog in the world.
30:12Far from it.
30:13And yet, he's getting away with murder.
30:16Lauren, you were telling me you've got a couple of ideas yourself
30:18of where things might be going wrong.
30:20Do you want to tell your dad?
30:21I think that you're a lovely person.
30:23You're very soft, though.
30:25And I don't think there's much authority there when it comes to Ziggy.
30:28That's probably right.
30:30So, for example, when Lauren was young,
30:32if Lauren stepped out of line and did something naughty,
30:35what happened?
30:35Did she get told off?
30:37Well, she got told off.
30:38Who by?
30:40Probably her...
30:41Probably my mother.
30:43Her mother.
30:43Her mum.
30:44Not by you.
30:47And thereby, Isaac hangs the rug, right?
30:51He's not getting sold off in any way.
30:53So I think we need to tell him no.
30:56Yeah, I'm quite prepared to do that.
30:59Yeah, and because...
31:00It's reached that point where, you know, it's make or break.
31:04Is grandad tough or soft?
31:06Soft.
31:08Out of the mouths of babes.
31:11Graham believes Richard's lack of authority and inconsistent approach...
31:15Oh, Ziggy!
31:16..has allowed Ziggy to run riot.
31:19Graham's probably hit the nail on the head with what he's suggested,
31:23with being a bit firmer with Ziggy.
31:26As Richard's been burying his head by locking his house down instead of his dog,
31:32Graham wants to put that right.
31:34So the aim today, really, is we'll get to the end of the day
31:36and we'll put the room back together.
31:38That'd be nice, wouldn't it?
31:39That would be.
31:39It's a real treat.
31:40Starting with some of Ziggy's favourite chewables.
31:44A pair of shoes, cushion, we'll stick that there.
31:49Ooh, and a blanket.
31:51How about that?
31:53So I'm going to teach Ziggy how to leave it, basically.
31:57I'm going to walk him past a couple of items that he's not allowed to have
32:00and when he steps away, we're going to say, leave it.
32:03We're going to guide him away from each of those items.
32:05So if I take that lead...
32:07Thanks, Lauren.
32:08Come on, Emma.
32:08You're with me.
32:09Graham's house rules are easy to follow.
32:11Let's go over here.
32:12As soon as Ziggy shows interest in something he shouldn't...
32:16Leave it.
32:16A clear, no-nonsense warning...
32:19Come on, Zig.
32:20What's this?
32:22Leave it.
32:23Praise for backing away...
32:24Oh, good boy.
32:26That's very good.
32:27Yes.
32:27And a reward with something he can play with.
32:31Come on, here's your reward.
32:33How about that?
32:34Ooh, you like that, don't you?
32:35Look, it's a chuggy toy.
32:36Yay!
32:37The message to Ziggy couldn't be simpler.
32:40These items, no.
32:42Those items, your dog toys, yes.
32:44Ziggy's listening to Graham.
32:46Leave it.
32:48Good boy.
32:50There you go.
32:51All right.
32:51Ha-ha-ha.
32:52Clever boy.
32:54Yeah.
32:55Much better than a cushion.
32:57But it'll only work if Richard can earn the same respect.
33:01So you've seen what I've done.
33:03I'm going to hand you the lead.
33:04I'm going to perch on here.
33:06I'm worried about Richard, actually.
33:07I'm going to teach Richard how to do the right kind of discipline.
33:11How to set boundaries, rules, you know.
33:13All right, then.
33:14Let's see what we've got.
33:15So you know the score.
33:16Ziggy's never listened to his dad.
33:19Leave it.
33:20So don't quite let him out.
33:22Leave it.
33:22But with a bit more grit behind him.
33:25Leave it.
33:26Good boy.
33:27Good tone of voice, that.
33:29Leave it.
33:31That's it.
33:31Good boy.
33:32Ziggy's finally paying attention.
33:35Oh, that's a good boy.
33:36Good boy.
33:37Good boy.
33:38Oh, he's sad.
33:39Yeah, that's good.
33:40Good boy.
33:41Hey, Richard really surprised me there.
33:42He's got the right tone of voice for this.
33:44Leave it.
33:44Fair play.
33:45I didn't know he had it in him.
33:46But can he be consistent with it?
33:49Well, you're doing ever so well, so I thought, well, I want to just bring one thing.
33:52Not quite, Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen.
33:55We'll throw some cushions around.
33:57There you go.
34:01Leave it.
34:02Leave it.
34:04Good boy.
34:05That's more like it.
34:06Oh, look at that.
34:07More furnishing, more temptation.
34:10That's it.
34:11There.
34:11But Richard's found his dad voice.
34:14Leave it.
34:15Good boy.
34:17Well, look.
34:17And Ziggy's listening.
34:19Leave it.
34:23Leave it.
34:24Well done.
34:25Good boy.
34:26Perfect.
34:27Preferring his toys to the furniture for once.
34:30It's the biggest rope in the world.
34:33Are you enjoying the luxurious upholstery?
34:35It feels very odd to be sitting on the sofa with him just there.
34:40Well, I think we've got the whole room back together.
34:43It's all here, isn't it?
34:45Since he was a pup, Ziggy's been free to play by his own rules, ripping the house apart.
34:51Oh, Ziggy.
34:54Well, a little bit nervous, but we'll go for it.
34:57Yeah, let's.
34:57Can he be trusted off lead?
34:59Let's go for it.
35:00Or will he go on the tear up?
35:04Good boy.
35:06Good lad.
35:06Maybe he's down to leave.
35:08I've got no words.
35:09But the fact that you've managed to get all this slot back out and he's not bothered.
35:14It's great, isn't it?
35:16Is that nice, Zach, having a cuddle?
35:18It's good.
35:19It's good.
35:21I think Graham's training today has been very useful.
35:25He's given us some good tips moving forward.
35:28It's nice that everything's out and Ziggy's not destroying anything.
35:33I think that you can play with Grandad again, can't you?
35:36Yeah.
35:37You'll be able to play with Grandad without Ziggy bothering you.
35:40Yeah.
35:41Well, it's been a pleasure meeting you, Rich.
35:43Thanks, Sarah.
35:43You're welcome.
35:44I'm going to leave you in peace.
35:45Thank you very much, Graham.
35:47Bye-bye.
35:49Coming up...
35:50Hughie!
35:50Graham's back on the case of a cockapooie-huey...
35:53Oh, my God.
35:56...and his stomach-churning habit of munching every mutt's muck.
36:00That's Frank the Bulldog.
36:01Can we see Frank's party trick, please?
36:04Oh.
36:12Graham's almost done for the week, but he's back in Bexley, south-east London, with cockapoo
36:17Hughie.
36:18No.
36:20Ugh.
36:20Who loves to chow down...
36:23Hughie!
36:24Stop!
36:25...on fresh doggy-doo.
36:27Oh, my God.
36:28He will try to eat it directly as it's coming out of their bums.
36:34A filthy habit that's turning Trish's stomach and everyone else's.
36:38Hughie!
36:39Stop it!
36:40Not the sort of thing you want to be seeing, especially not first thing in the morning.
36:44With behaviour this unusual, Graham wanted a medical check before tackling the training.
36:49Ew, don't lick me face.
36:51With the all clear from the vet, it seemed Hughie's faecal fascination went right back
36:56to puppyhood, as the lone survivor of a litter of ten.
37:00Some dogs learn it because as puppies, their mum will eat the poo to keep the nest clean.
37:05Is he eating more poo?
37:06Graham's got the green light to train Hughie, and he reckons the key is recall, getting him
37:12to turn his back on pooping pups.
37:14Now, for training, I've got a problem because, theoretically, I would need a whole line of my
37:18dogs who just like poo on command, one after the other, after the other, and I don't think
37:22that's going to happen, so I'm going to have to get a bit creative.
37:28And true to form...
37:29Good boy!
37:30Graham's found a dog who does a number two on cue.
37:34There!
37:36That's Frank the Bulldog.
37:37Oh, my gosh.
37:40Can we see Frank's party trick, please?
37:46Oh!
37:47Oh, my gosh.
37:49It's a Frankfurter.
37:51Oh, Hughie's going to love this.
37:53He is, isn't he?
37:54Maybe not quite as much as poo, but the theory is, if Trish can recall Hughie from a juicy
38:00sausage, chances are she can pull him off a dog one, too.
38:03We're going to put him on a long line so he can't actually get to the Frankfurter, although
38:08he's going to be really quite close to it and wanting it.
38:10When he comes back to us, he gets a treat.
38:13If he can do that, he should also step away from the delicious poo.
38:18And the whole thing relies on one key principle.
38:21We've got to be more exciting than poo.
38:24First, Trish needs to choose a clear recall command to stick to.
38:29All right.
38:29Normally what I say to get him back, look what I got.
38:32Oh, well, you can do that if you want.
38:33Yeah.
38:34If we can have one Frankfurter, please.
38:36Boom.
38:37There we go.
38:38Right.
38:38Come on, Hughie.
38:38Let's check it out.
38:40For this to work, Trish must be more exciting.
38:43Here we go.
38:44Than the potential poo.
38:46And be clear with her commands.
38:48No.
38:49That's it.
38:50Hughie, look.
38:51Look what I got.
38:52Oh, he's got it.
38:53He's got it.
38:54And he got it.
38:55Because while you went, Hughie.
38:57Oh.
38:58Not to worry.
39:00Trish gets a bit flustered.
39:01She's forgetting what to say.
39:03Trish has got to get it right.
39:05You've got to be a wee bit more decisive.
39:07Also, you went, Hughie.
39:08And he's like, and?
39:10Yeah.
39:10Look.
39:11Right.
39:12Which is good.
39:12And then you didn't do the next bit.
39:14Look what I got.
39:14So you went.
39:15Yeah.
39:15That's not the magic words, is it?
39:17We might have our workers out now, because he's had one.
39:19But Trish needs to up her game and make herself clear.
39:23Poo is off the menu.
39:25Hughie.
39:26No.
39:27Look.
39:28Look what I got.
39:28Perfect.
39:29Whee.
39:29Look.
39:30Well done.
39:31Really good.
39:31Good boy.
39:31That's better.
39:32Let's go again.
39:33Right.
39:34Oh, here he goes.
39:35He's off like a shot now.
39:36Close enough.
39:36No.
39:37Hughie.
39:38Look.
39:39Hughie, look.
39:40There you go.
39:41Look what I got.
39:42There you go.
39:42Hey, well done.
39:45So, when you get your words right, it works every time.
39:47And when Trish finds her confidence.
39:50Look.
39:51Look what I got.
39:52Yeah.
39:52Good boy.
39:54I think he's going back on purpose.
39:57Along with excitement and treats.
40:00No.
40:01Look.
40:01Look what I got.
40:02Yay.
40:03Good boy.
40:04It works.
40:05Time.
40:06Look.
40:06Look what I got.
40:07After time.
40:08Yeah.
40:09Whee.
40:10Clever boy.
40:10I think we've done quite well with Frank and the Frankfurters.
40:14OK.
40:15What if we go find a real dog now, doing a real poo, and put this to the test?
40:20I'm actually really excited to see if this is going to work.
40:24Tempting Hughie away from a Frankfurter is one thing.
40:27Hughie!
40:28But usually getting a sniff of the real stuff.
40:31Hughie!
40:32Turns this mutt into a heat-seeking poopinator.
40:35Stop it!
40:37Now they need a real-life pooping pooch.
40:39Which isn't as easy as you'd think.
40:49There's never a pooing dog when you want one, is there?
40:52There will be soon, surely.
40:54The big question is, can you call him away when there's a real pooing dog?
40:58I'm going to give it a go.
41:01Oh, here we go.
41:02Here's one.
41:04Oh, hello.
41:05If Trish is going to pry Hughie off that Labrador's bum, she needs to be razor-sharp.
41:11The moment the lab goes to squat, he locks on.
41:16Holds the alarm.
41:17It's a wee.
41:17But moments later...
41:19Oh, here we go.
41:20Here we go.
41:21Here she goes.
41:22Oh, oh.
41:22Oh, right.
41:24Are you ready?
41:26Right.
41:27Now, go on.
41:27Call him.
41:28Hughie!
41:29No.
41:30Look.
41:31Look what I got.
41:32Yay!
41:33Good boy!
41:34Yeah!
41:35I'm really shocked.
41:37Yeah, so am I.
41:38You got the words out right.
41:41It's proven Hughie will ditch the poo if Trish nails what to do.
41:47Honestly, he's never done that.
41:49He's never turned down fresh poo like that.
41:52It's all about consistency.
41:53Yeah.
41:54I really wasn't expecting any of that to work, so I'm really pleased.
41:59Hughie?
41:59No!
42:00Look!
42:01Look what I got!
42:02So, Hughie, who was the only puppy out of ten to survive, has a happy future ahead of him
42:08now, and if he should happen to give her a bit of a lick and a kiss in future, well,
42:13it's no worse than the average dog now, is it?
42:18In Oxford, Richard's new house rules seem to be working.
42:22We've managed to keep the house looking more of a home, and Zach is able to play, while
42:28Ziggy just relaxes.
42:32Graham's puppy school students have been revising hard.
42:36Good girl!
42:39And Loki might even be head of the class.
42:43And in South East London...
42:45I just wanted to let you know how Hughie Pooie is getting on.
42:49And he's been a lot better.
42:52It's not been 100% perfect, but we're still getting there.
42:56And, yeah, thank you so much for all your help.
42:59If you think your badly behaved dog could do with Graham's help, then why not get in touch?
