00:00Hello and welcome to The Weekend Travel Show with me Richard Arnold and me Kim Marsh over
00:13the next hour we have some fabulous clips involving some fabulous celebrities traveling
00:17to some fabulous locations it's a lot of fabulous to squeeze into 60 minutes I don't know about you
00:23Kim but as a sort of ripening age I tend to visit friends quite a bit now because it's time well
00:28spent isn't it so no matter what the view is you're always in the best of company and I've got a lot
00:33of friends who over the years who've sort of broken for the border and they've bought like a regular
00:37fixer-upper somewhere like Italy or France and stuff with varying degrees of success because I
00:41would probably not have the the courage to do it so my other half and I have sort of fallen into
00:47the habit which is a good one for us not necessarily for the friends who host us of sort of arriving in
00:52a blaze of glory and then about two weeks later leaving under the cover of darkness because
00:56we've outstayed our welcome I mean I know what you mean I I tend to make I like to make sure that
01:01I get a holiday just with my friends with your mates because you know a lot of my time's taken up with
01:06family and I love I love holidays with my family but it's also really important for me to just have
01:11that time to relax and chill and just be Kim so I tend to visit the south of France pretty much
01:15every year with my friends and it's just a nice little rest for me well coming up on today's
01:21program our well-traveled celebrities will be taking us around the world Nick Knowles is in
01:26the jungle canopy of Malaysia Jay McDonald is having a city break in Marrakesh George and Larry
01:31Lamb are back and they're enjoying a party on the Isles of Scilly and our famous fives riverboat
01:36adventure is continuing in France the gift that keeps on giving but first we're heading to one of
01:42the most popular destinations in the UK Cornwall do you actually know that I'm part Cornish are you
01:48really I am indeed my grandmother my dad's mom was from Cornwall well what a coincidence because
01:54here's Susan Kalman enjoying the destination that makes up some of your DNA
01:59with views like these it's easy to see why over four million tourists flock to these parts every year
02:11by the time I am finished in my life there will not be an inch of Cornwall I have not visited
02:18and I'll have loved every second of it
02:22I'm starting my journey at Lizard Point a name which some say derives from the Cornish for headland
02:32oh absolutely stunning and the beautiful vista isn't Lizard Point's only distinction just over
02:43there is the most let me get this right southerly point in the mainland and here I am
02:51there's over 300 miles of coastline to explore in Cornwall and few know these blue green seas better
03:04than kayak instructor Matt Hollier hi there Matt how you doing I'm doing very well yourself yeah good
03:11thank you so excited because look at that it's gorgeous isn't it the Cornish coast is a mecca for
03:19water sport enthusiasts Matt's been guiding kayakers here for eight years so I know I'm in safe hands
03:25but with me paddling it's probably him that should be worried
03:29oh wow oh my goodness these cliffs contain a soft rock called soapstone able to withstand high
03:47temperatures without cracking it was once vital in the making of British porcelain
03:51quarriers excavated these narrow caves in pursuit of this valuable material there's a cave just this
03:58side of there that they've dug out themselves so that they could get to this little code but low
04:05tides they'd land on the next little beach on the other side and then go right through the the cave
04:10there that they've dug out and then they take away the soapstone today there's another reason why
04:15people visit these cliffs it's for the white knuckle thrill of getting close to these scary looking rocks
04:20the narrow channels around these cliffs create little rapids that even on a calm day like today propel you
04:38along at speed there we go oh my god look at this
04:46that's it amazing look at that
04:58this is not home of a soul to me it's absolutely brilliant
05:05there we go into the calm and breathe
05:14this is the only way to see the coastline in Cornwall
05:26it is wonderful dramatic and gorgeous it's easy to fall in love with Cornwall
05:35Susan's in the best of company there it's one way to enjoy uh Cornwall uh quite close to the rocks but
05:41what a beautiful part of the world well I know I think I need to connect more with my Cornish
05:45heritage to be honest I mean what started out there as a gentle kayaking trip turned into almost
05:50white water rafting there were white knuckles involved I think I've never actually been kayaking
05:56uh no it pedaloing it's probably as close as I've ever got and I know pedaloing seems like a good
06:03idea at the time it's a lot of pedaling for very little return isn't it yeah it is really you don't
06:08really go anywhere do you it's not like don't see anything after the break we'll be traveling into
06:13the heart of Malaysia with Nick Knowles whilst back in Cornwall Susan shows us how to have a similar
06:18experience really you'll have to wait and see welcome back so far on the weekend travel show
06:30Susan Kalman has shown us the stunning coast of Cornwall uh where to next Kim well I have to say
06:36it's not a place I've ever been Richard it is Marrakesh definitely on my bucket list I would love
06:42to go and you haven't been I've not been this is amazing can we have a whip round yeah I've always
06:49wanted to go though because I think it's one of those places as well that people forget that you
06:52can get to in a relatively short time but feel like you're going somewhere completely out of this world
06:59somewhere completely exotic yeah and just for a long weekend break imagine the assault on the senses
07:05imagine Jane Mcdonald going there imagine tell us Jane wow
07:12aha this is me yeah miss Jane Mcdonald that's right thank you very much nice to meet you
07:22okay do you do this oh thank you this warm meet and greets a standard service if you book a boutique
07:32hotel and it stops us travelers getting lost in the maze-like streets of the old town
07:37we wind our way on foot for just a couple of minutes to where I'll be hanging me hat for a few
07:46days or should that be me fez this is so different it's so different a lot of the places you go to now
07:54all look the same everything's the same you know every high streets the same this is nothing like
08:02anywhere I've ever seen in my life these bustling markets are the beating heart of Morocco with
08:12traders traveling from far and wide to sell their wares all the color is amazing already every color
08:21you could wish for there's so much to take in Marrakesh is the fourth largest city in Morocco and
08:28the shops are open to the streets so you're cheek by jowl with people's daily lives and I love it already
08:35there's accommodation to suit all budgets here but I looked online and booked myself into a tucked away gem
08:44it's a converted Riyadh a traditional Moroccan home built around a courtyard
08:49and hotel manager Antonio is there to greet me here is the courtyard and I'm transported into a hidden
08:59oasis a world away from the city oh my goodness this is beautiful originally just the wealthy owned these
09:13hidden courtyard homes a place of peace and tranquility from the madness of Marrakesh
09:19you can't believe that you know out there it's like bikes going around the noise yet in here that's
09:33that's why Riyadh means house overlooking inside so there is no window overlooking outside oh
09:40everything is inside to be calm and quiet
09:44they also provided privacy for Islamic women who would keep their heads covered in public here they could literally
09:54let their hair down and gas bag with their girlfriends in secluded comfort
09:58beautiful trees here yeah have they been here for many years since the beginning look at this tree I know how big it is
10:10so please have a seat oh thank you we're gonna bring you some tea oh that's lovely oh
10:15gosh it's so calm no matter where in the world I get to visit nothing hits the spot like a brew here is some minty minty oh that's very good for you isn't it typical Moroccan hitting new heights with me
10:31cuppa this actually aerates it to improve the flavor thank you very much oh cheers oh it smells lovely
10:40so fresh after a few of these and the tinkling sound of that fountain I think I'd better find this little girl's room oh wow look at this you like it oh I love it yeah
10:55oh look at this
11:02it's fit for an amira in here that's Arabic for princess
11:10and that's just how I feel
11:17there's so much to buy here but you've got to be a master haggler now whilst I might be a super shopper me haggling could do with some work so
11:27Antonio at me Riyadh suggested I meet an expert in the field Lucy an Arabic-speaking Brit abroad will stop me blowing me life savings
11:36really well yeah going shopping yes yeah haggling haggling have you done it before no it's like going into battle
11:43right so it's like you're a warrior right warrior where do we start I am literally like a kid in a sweet shop here or a McDonald in any shop really
11:53there's soup soups at range so you've got one area that's the leather soups one area that's the metal soups right and then right by the plush mouth now which is the big square here that's the worst place to buy stuff
12:07uh-huh because that's where all the tourists go right so further into the soup that you go the better deals you get I'm with you yeah
12:16yeah so the less being the truck the better the bargains got it when you see the shopkeeper you need to say salam alaikum
12:25salam salam alaikum alaikum perfect salam alaikum yeah and you need to give eye contact to the shopkeeper okay
12:34and that way you'll get at least 10% off maybe 20 or 30 just with them yeah and he knows then that you're not someone who's just come off a cruise ship
12:42as we delve deeper into this aladdin's cave of delights the jane genie is definitely out of the bottle
12:49I'm determined to buy some air that's it yeah so this is an oil burner don't look too interested no I'm not I'm not right don't look too interested
13:05so if you want it yeah clear if you want it if you don't want it don't start haggling
13:12no this will be perfect yeah okay don't love it with your eyes no I'm not
13:20here goes a test of me haggling and language skills what's your best price
13:26it's a menzi and have it it means we naffek
13:33I'm rubbish
13:35it's the wind half back
13:37back in which team
13:39pick it
13:40so you go like about four times
13:42four times
13:43four times
13:44quarter the price
13:45I think 150
13:47but it's what you're willing to pay isn't it yeah you're too nice
13:54I'm too nice I can't hug all
13:57I'd probably go something way loads I'd probably go
14:00180
14:01no 150
14:02I'd go 150
14:04180
14:05no

15:02but you're very nice
15:04good
15:05happy
15:06yes
15:07don't do that to a thrifty Yorkshire lass
15:09nearly give me a heart attack
15:11oh
15:13super
15:14super
15:15super
15:16that's beautiful
15:17thank you very much
15:19saha
15:20saha
15:21well you know what they say
15:22good grace and manners
15:23wherever you are in the world
15:24and a smile
15:25is all you need
15:27and she does have a great smile
15:29doesn't she
15:30speaking of smiles
15:31next we have smiley Nick Knowles
15:32where's he off to today Kimberly
15:33well if you look at that Richard
15:35that is the jungle
15:36the Malaysian jungle to be precise
15:38Nick is there exploring the country by rail
15:41as you well know I love travelling on a rattler
15:44I've been through France Germany Italy and Austria
15:46and it's brilliant because you get to see all the sights obviously
15:48the peaks the troughs
15:50you do
15:52all of it
15:53as you pass through
15:54well it is definitely Nick's number one mode of transport
15:57and today he's travelling around Malaysia's railway network of over 17,000 miles
16:03that's 17,000 miles of saying where's the trolley
16:06oh my goodness
16:08starts with a rather special train ride
16:10so this is Metacab station
16:14and this is the start of the iconic jungle railway
16:17that's my train coming in
16:37I can't tell you how excited I am
16:39to be heading out into the jungle
16:41this is one of Asia's
16:42most iconic rail journeys
16:45as this is the rainy season
16:47it's going to be hot
16:48humid
16:49and very green
17:01around 50% of Malaysia is still covered in tropical rainforest
17:06and the next stop
17:07Meripo
17:08drops me right on its doorstep
17:10so the train has brought me to the heart of the jungle
17:13which gives me a chance to visit one of the oldest rainforests in the world
17:17a small proportion of Malaysia's rainforests are still untouched
17:24and they don't get much more pristine than this
17:27130 million years old in a national park larger than Cornwall
17:32with one of the most diverse mixtures of plants and trees of any rainforest in the world
17:40so this is Tamanagara National Park
17:43and I've come to meet Yo who's in charge
17:45who's going to show me the new tree top walk
17:47which is so new that it isn't open to the public yet
17:51yeah
17:52yeah
17:53yeah
17:54how you doing?
17:55fine thank you
17:57the walkway cost over 2 million pounds
17:59and winds its way through almost half a mile of jungle
18:03you also have huge snakes here
18:04yes
18:05pythons
18:06huge pythons
18:07yeah
18:08I'll watch out for those
18:09also we have gibbons here
18:11oh do you?
18:12yeah
18:13so you hear the whooping
18:14at the end of the day
18:15yes
18:16the late evening
18:17like that
18:18whoop whoop
18:19ah
18:20I like gibbons
18:21they're amazing
18:22I love the fact it goes up again into the tree canopy there
18:26the walkway rises over 100 feet into the trees
18:33that's great the higher you get the better it looks
18:37yes of course
18:38wonderful
18:39wow
18:42that was worth a climb wasn't it?
18:46it's
18:47a privilege to be in a canopy like this
18:50where you can hear the bird life around you
18:52it's immersion
18:53that's what it is
19:02oh
19:03stuff of dreams
19:04that jungle train that takes you right into the heart of the rainforest
19:06which presumably is the only way you can get there
19:08a lot of stairs for Nick
19:09but he was in very safe hands with that guide as well
19:11it looks fantastic
19:12it's just the sounds of the place isn't it?
19:14like Nick says it's total immersion
19:16what an absolute experience
19:18sort of sounds you put on at night
19:19if you're trying to nod off
19:20and then you wake up in the middle of the night
19:21because what you've put on
19:22has suddenly moved into some booming classical music
19:25you wake up because your playlist is all over the hockey
19:28now whilst the Malaysian tropical rainforest is quite a way off
19:31and will set you back quite a bit of dosh
19:33believe it or not
19:34we have our very own jungle walk right here in the UK
19:37yes we do
19:38at the Eden Project in Cornwall
19:40over to Susan to take us there
19:47this tropical garden is housed in a crater the size of 30 football pitches
19:52it was home to the clay pit for around 200 years
19:55but in 2001 it was transformed into this ecological wonder
20:00when you walk in the first thing that hits you is the heat
20:06the humidity hits you
20:08I'm like a bit of cheese that's been left out in the sun
20:11a thin layer of sweat all over me
20:13with trees and plants from South America, Africa, Asia and Australia
20:22Eden really does feel like paradise
20:25but you can hear the birds and the water
20:28and it's like a sensory overload
20:31and I mean who knew in Cornwall
20:37you could see this
20:41it's the rainforest
20:43and the Herculean task of looking after all these incredible plants falls to Catherine Cutler and her team
20:52hi Catherine
20:53she's been working here since the project opened over 20 years ago
20:58I can tell you're someone who has a passion for this place
21:01why are you so passionate about this place and what it does
21:04for most people this is the closest they're going to get to visiting a rainforest
21:08and if it allows people to have that connection
21:11why it's important
21:12why it's important
21:13why we should care about it
21:14and rainforests are so important because they actually control the climate
21:17I've got a herb garden
21:18and that is difficult enough to get my basil to keep going
21:21have you had any problems growing any of these?
21:23you need the right conditions
21:25so we're controlling the temperature
21:27and we were controlling the humidity
21:29yeah
21:30but now our forest is creating its own humidity
21:33so we don't need to increase it ourselves
21:38there's so much to explore in this tropical paradise
21:46oh that is beautiful
21:48there's a gorgeous waterfall
21:50creating a natural breeze
21:52which is so refreshing here
21:55all I keep thinking about though is a shampoo advert
21:58but I'd like to get in there and go
22:00it's just all natural
22:02and to complete the feeling of being in an actual rainforest
22:12it even has its own clouds
22:14the only time I've seen clouds like this
22:17is when I've been flying through them
22:19and I've always wanted
22:21you know when you're in a plane
22:22and you think I could just reach out
22:23and I could touch the clouds
22:25and that's what I'm doing now
22:27or I'm in an episode of stars in their eyes
22:30tonight Matthew
22:32I'm going to be meatloaf
22:33it's going to be meatloaf
22:34but to take in the scale of this project
22:41you need to get up high
22:43don't look down Susan
22:53just look up
22:54just look up
22:55don't look down
22:56oh my goodness
23:00oh
23:01oh
23:02I'm not known for my love of heights
23:05but today I'm feeling brave
23:08okay
23:11take your time
23:13you can do it
23:15the rainforest lookout is a viewing platform more than 160 feet high
23:20taller than the Tower of London
23:22nearly there
23:23nearly there
23:24nearly there
23:25nearly there
23:27I'm glad I persevered
23:32I'm glad I persevered
23:35ooooooo
23:37woo hoo hoo hoo hoo
23:42it's worth it
23:43it's worth it
23:44it is high
23:47it is hot
23:48but it is
23:50exceptional to see it from here
23:54it is worth it
23:56you take it slow
23:58you shuffle
24:00and you'll get there
24:07genuine rainforest right here on our doorstep
24:10I love it
24:11yes
24:12you've been there
24:13fact or just here so
24:14wait
24:15yay
24:17no I have been there
24:18and I performed at the Eden Project
24:20as part of Hearsay for a Kids TV programme
24:23back in the day obviously
24:24a long time ago
24:25that's beautiful
24:26it is amazing
24:27what are the acoustics like in there?
24:29oh don't ask me
24:30woman miming love
24:32on a bombshell
24:33it's time for another break

29:47the Isles of Scilly
29:48might lie just off Cornwall
29:49but with their crystal clear waters
29:51and string of islands
29:52they've been compared to the Caribbean
29:54or even the Maldives
29:56beautiful part of the world
29:57the islands are a hot spot
29:58for those seeking peace
29:59and solitude
30:00but every year

34:06George and I always joke about great places where I could retire to I think he's pushing me to get going
34:12and this is certainly one on the list you know a little boat to putter around and a bicycle to ride around in and that would suit me
34:19I could totally see him here and I would be very happy if he ended up here because I would like to be coming back here more
34:25kind of feel like we've been taken into the fold a little bit and we're kind of honorary Salonians really
34:31well that looks like fun doesn't it and you don't have to be a boat enthusiast to enjoy grab a grandad week in the sillies

38:27do you know what that is so?
38:29chicken
38:33it's wonderful
38:35this town is so enchanting
38:37I see why artists chose to live here
38:39and because it's built on the cliffs
38:42it's got loads of places to get a great view
38:45of what's been our home for the past six days
38:48the river lot
38:52we're splitting up to see it from different perspectives
38:55there's one place nearby
38:56a chateau on the cliff face
38:59there's our lovely river
39:01it's beyond exciting
39:03Penny and I have an even better plan
39:08seeing the river from a balloon
39:10is too good an opportunity to miss
39:12look tree tops
39:14could do without crashing into any more trees
39:16oh look

40:08yeah
40:11I really don't like facing that way
40:13I don't know why
40:14it's probably because if you actually look straight down from the balloon
40:18just between me and the ground
40:20it's just a very small piece of basket
40:22yeah
40:26this river runs through
40:28really the most beautiful countryside
40:31it's always quiet
40:33and always serene
40:35it's so different from my normal life
40:38time is of no
40:40object really
40:42and that's attractive isn't it?

40:48and to be honest I didn't know what to expect
40:51I was a bit apprehensive to be honest
40:53but I've got to be honest I'm having a ball
41:02I would do it again
41:03I think it's been really really exciting
41:05it's very challenging but very exciting
41:12and look at that landscape that's revealing itself now
41:14beautiful
41:15beautiful
41:17very nice
41:18I couldn't think of a better way to finish
41:20the trip
41:21I think it's a magical
41:23I feel a bit emotional
41:25the hardest thing for me has been
41:30letting go
41:32of normal life
41:34but day by day
41:36on that river
41:38you're lulled into
41:40a sense of
41:42tranquility I suppose
41:43I tell you
41:44it's hard to top this
41:47now you're daydreaming
41:48of being in that hot air balloon
41:49with Sue Cleaver aren't you?
