Song Background:
Edgar Allen Poe is now a poor student in Boston. The behavior of the students there displeases the professors and city fathers, which is why there is a judicial investigation. While a few fellow students are expelled from the university and even professors are convicted, Edgar manages to stay out of trouble, even though, in addition to alcohol and gambling, he also experiments with opium for the first time during this period, fleeing into the mountains in a daze. He processes his experiences and hallucinations in “A Tale of the Ragged Mountains.” This story also explains the peculiar but multi-layered title of the song.
