Song Background:
Edgar Allan Poe's earliest memories were tragic ones of how his mother died.
She left behind two orphans, Edgar and his sister Rosalie, who were placed with different foster families.
Edgar's new foster mother Frances loved him and gave him moments of peace amid all the grief. This enabled Edgar to come to terms with his mother's death and later write a few lines about her grave.
Over time, Frances became Edgar's true, beloved mother. Her husband, Edgar's stepfather John, paid for the funeral, but was not happy with him, which developed into mutual hatred over the years.
