00:00Issa Rae and Laura Dern are set to battle over Cabbage Patch dolls in a new HBO limited series.
00:05Yes, you heard that right. Rae and Dern have signed on to star and executive produce
00:09limited series The Dolls for the premium cable network. The series, which is in development,
00:14will recount the aftermath of the Christmas Eve riots within two small Arkansas towns in 1983
00:20in which riots erupted over Cabbage Patch dolls. The limited series will explore class, race,
00:25privilege and what it takes to be a good mother. Now, if you don't know, the Cabbage Patch
00:29riots were a series of fights at retail stores that erupted following the breakout
00:34demand for the doll brand that was one of the most coveted pop culture items of the 1980s.
00:38The toy line remains in production today. The Dolls expands HBO's relationship with
00:42Insecure co-creator, star and executive producer Rae, who signed a first-look deal with the
00:47premium cable network in 2016. Meanwhile, Dern wrapped production on season two of HBO's
00:52awards darling Big Little Lies and the Tale, for which she earned her seventh Emmy nomination.
00:57She won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work in season one of Big Little Lies.
01:01The Dolls is her latest foray for HBO, following the late and great Enlightened.
