00:00Well this crash site has quickly turned to tragedy now emergency services were called
00:06out to here at Heckfield also known as Jacob's Well Airport to reports just before six o'clock
00:13this morning that a light plane had crashed. Now sadly police have confirmed that two occupants
00:19on board that flight have sadly passed away as a result but not only did the crash spark a blaze
00:26it is now burning through hundreds of hectares of grass including sugarcane. As you can imagine
00:32Jacob's Well is known for its sugarcane fields and emergency crews more than dozen are here on site
00:39battling that blaze. They say that it is quite challenging terrain to try and access that site
00:44not only are they dealing with head-high sugarcane but on top of that they've also got a creek which
00:50SES crews are using tinnies to try and access. Now there are also water bombers to try and sort of
00:56control that blaze. There have been large clouds of black billowing smoke that's been seen from this
01:03area since early hours of this morning. Now Jacob's Well is about half an hour north on the outskirts
01:09of the Gold Coast about 40 minutes south of Brisbane's CBD. Now police have identified one of the occupants
01:16as being a 73 year old Bean Lee man. As the pilot they are working to discover and investigate what
01:23exactly led up to this moment. We do know that the flight had intended to take off from here at Heckfield
01:29and that's when eyewitnesses started to see it crash. It was supposed to land at Tamworth airport
01:35today. Now that airstrip in particular is privately owned. It does fly a number of light airplanes including
01:43single-engine aircrafts. We've heard from the superintendent Brett Jackson who spoke a little earlier.
01:49He says that this flight was logged. It was a planned flight. It's a private airstrip here where
01:53people who own airplanes can rent hangars and then they can do private flights. So they have to lodge a
02:01flight plan with CASA and that was done on this instance. So we are aware that the planned flight was
02:07to a small town just outside of Tamworth. So we have that information. As to the intention behind
02:14the trip I don't actually have that information. That'll form part of the investigation. A crime scene
02:18has been declared and police are continuing their investigations. They're hoping to piece together
02:23the moments leading up to the crash as they continue to figure out what exactly happened.
