00:01The European Commission has launched an investigation into Grok.
00:05It will look into whether Elon Musk's AI chatbot spreads illegal content in the EU.
00:11That includes manipulated sexualised images.
00:14The EU called sexual deepfakes of women and children a violent and unacceptable form of degradation.
00:21The Commission said Monday it will investigate whether X properly assessed and lowered risks related to Grok's functionalities in the bloc.
00:27X referred to a statement issued earlier this month where it said XAI had restricted image editing for Grok AI users.
00:35It also said it blocked users based on their location from generating images of people in revealing clothing in jurisdictions where it's illegal.
00:44It didn't identify the countries.
00:46The move by the Commission comes under the Digital Services Act or DSA.
00:51The law requires big tech to do more to tackle illegal and harmful online content.
00:55It also comes after XAI's Grok produced sexualised images of women and minors that angered global regulators.
01:03Companies risk fines as much as 6% of their global annual turnover for breaches of the DSA.
01:09The Commission welcomed changes made by XAI but said it didn't resolve all the issues and systemic risks.
01:15The EU's move risks angering the administration of US President Donald Trump.
01:20The bloc's crackdown on big tech has previously led to criticism and even the threat of tariffs from the US.
01:27Britain's media regulator Ofcom also launched its own separate investigation earlier this month.
01:32It's looking into whether X has complied with its duties under the UK's Online Safety Act.
01:37It's looking into the acknowledgment and the athletic officers.
