00:00Plans for a major music festival on Newcastle's Townmoor in May have been dropped after officials
00:05confirmed a clash with Radio 1's Big Weekend in Sunderland. Around 80,000 music fans are
00:12expected on Wearside from the 22nd to the 24th of May for the three-day BBC event at
00:19Herrington Park. The Townmoor event, potentially a return of Loosefest, was deemed operationally
00:25and economically unviable. Alongside The Big Weekend, council sources said the freemen of
00:30Newcastle, responsible for the green space, expressed disappointment. Funding for The
00:36Big Weekend will support local infrastructure and a week-long fringe festival showcasing
00:41regional music talents and the creative industry.
