00:00It's all scenes ahead here in Newcastle City Centre where we are just days away from the
00:04Newcastle Christmas Markets and Christmas Village opening.
00:08We caught up with anyone to find out what's in store for the official launch.
00:13We're building, we are building, yeah it's Christmas market time and so ever since the
00:19lights went on last week it's just been a hive of activity in the city centre building
00:23to get ready for Saturday which is the grand opening of Newcastle's Christmas Market and
00:27Christmas Village for 2025.
00:29Yeah we want to make a big splash this year.
00:32We want people to know the market has arrived and we want to have a big celebration so we're
00:36going to have a ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony and we're also going to have performances
00:40from Easington Colliery Band and then the Cathedral Choir from St. Nicholas Cathedral are going
00:46to be performing some carols for us after the leader of the council cuts the red ribbon.
00:51I think it just speaks to what we're trying to achieve with the market, you know we're
00:54trying to do something that really celebrates the city, really feels immersive, really feels
00:59reflective of the city and what's going on in it.
01:01So when you look at that, Easington Colliery Band obviously in the news heavily this year,
01:07Newcastle Cathedral are the cathedral for the city and their choir are going to be performing
01:12here.
01:13And I suppose show off and highlight the best of what's going on in the city and that's
01:18the same with the traders.
01:20We've got I think 84% of the traders are from within 20 miles of the city.
01:25So we really want to make it really local, really unique and totally different to anything you'll
01:30find anywhere else.
01:31So we're kicking things off on Saturday for the launch of the markets from about 10 to
01:3510.
01:36Easington Colliery Band are going to be the first act and you know hopefully they're
01:39going to be quite noisy so hard to miss.
01:42Then at 10 o'clock we're going to open the markets with the ribbon cutting and then after
01:45that we'll have the Cathedral Choir who are going to sing us some songs.
01:49And then we're going to offer people a tour of the markets so they can see what's going
01:51on, what's new and what they can look out for.
01:55It's giving people a reason to visit you know I think it's really easy to sort of sit back
02:00and expect people are just going to find their way but it's a really competitive market and
02:04if we don't put on something excellent there will be lots of other places that people can
02:08go so we sort of revel in that we're trying to push it every year and give people more
02:12reasons to sort of come in and then whilst they're here enjoy everything else that's going
02:16on around and visit the businesses that surround the market and increase the time they're
02:21spending the city.
02:23As well as the Christmas markets, NE1 team up with Newcastle City Council every year for
02:27New Year's Eve celebrations on the Quayside but for 2025 the city is up in the ante with
02:33a brand new event, Howe Mané.
02:37It's going to be changed this year, it's all changed.
02:39Whilst we're still doing the 6 o'clock free fireworks for families we're introducing a new
02:44event now from 8.30 on the Quayside which will be ticketed.
02:47It's called Howe Mané so it's a little bit Geordie and it's a little bit of a nod to
02:51Edinburgh's famous celebrations.
02:53We're going to be throwing a massive party down there that's going to end with fireworks.
