00:00So we talked a lot about how it works considerably more efficient, how it's safer for the people that are
00:08walking across the streets, how it also looks better in many ways, how there are less cars that just impacts
00:18the nature, especially like a very busy shopping street.
00:21And we come from Denmark, a country where people and pedestrians and bikes and such, they feel a lot more
00:30than cars and also how it pushes people towards using sustainable routes like buses and trains and the metro and
00:38such.
00:38And how if you want to get the impact of like the CO2 impact, especially on the bigger cities in
00:46England and other places, it's important to make the cities beautiful and especially the big foreign affairs like this.
00:52Oxford Street is one of the world's busiest shopping areas with around half a million visitors each day, while the
00:59pedestrianisation comes in time for the streets busy Christmas period.
01:04Buses, taxis, private hire vehicles, private cars, cycles, scooters and pedicabs can no longer enter, while deliveries can still be
01:15made from midnight until 7am.
01:17The area has become increasingly popular as an office location thanks to the Elizabeth Line, and Sadiq Khan believes the
01:25scheme will help revitalise the site, boost economic growth and attract visitors.
01:30It is expected that eventually Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road will be fully pedestrianised.
01:37Well, I think it's a great idea. It's taken a long time. The city I come from in Australia has
01:43had a mall or walking street since the 70s.
01:47So it's about time London has caught up with the rest of the world because everyone can find malls and
01:53walking streets and I don't believe that there's so much to be jumped up and down about, pollution and whatever,
02:03we're all going to electric cars, so that's out of the way and people will adapt.
02:08And it's good for people with disabilities because they might jam onto a footpath and make life difficult for them.
02:15It's always felt quite dangerous with the buses and taxis coming down here. Not sure how it's going to be
02:21when they finish it, but the cross roads obviously mean you can't just ignore the traffic completely, but overall I
02:29think it would be a good thing to make it better.
02:34Well, the pedestrianisation of Oxford streets, especially for Christmas, has got to be a winner for everyone, the shops and
02:41the pedestrians.
02:42It's much easier to walk up and down and there's nothing worse than being really jammed in on either side
02:47of the street because it gets so congested itself.
02:50I think it will be safer. It'll be a lot easier to walk up and down and it's also good
02:55for the children as well. You can let your children run free.
