00:00Remember what happened and Wicked for Good
00:09From casting a spell at the box office to the fan frenzy what the stars are saying about the return of Elphaba and Glinda
00:17And Wicked for Good we get to see the repercussions for their actions
00:22We head to Broadway where it all began. This is how they pick me green
00:25And what one of the film's stars says about what everyone wants to know. Do you think that there could be a third Wicked?
00:34From ABC News headquarters in New York. This is Nightline
00:39Welcome back Wicked for Good casting a spell on audiences and breaking box office records
00:59Bringing in more than 225 million dollars globally over the opening weekend
01:04We take you behind the magic of the phenomena and heading back to Broadway where it all began
01:10Here's ABC's Gio Benitez
01:12Two tickets please
01:13For one movie
01:14It was even better than the first one
01:19Oh my god
01:20The movie was okay
01:21I thought it was fine
01:23This is the up for Wicked for Good
01:25It's a box office phenomenon
01:31Wicked for Good
01:32I'm off to see the wizard
01:34Returning fans to the land of Oz
01:39Cynthia Rivo and Ariana Grande soaring back as Elphaba and Glinda
01:43In Wicked for Good we get to see the repercussions for their actions
01:48The second film doing even better than the first grossing more than 226 million dollars worldwide
01:55The star-studded cast united Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and people's sexiest man alive Jonathan Bailey
02:10Despite mixed reviews fans are still heading to the theaters to see the movie
02:17I think it's gonna be so fun
02:19It brings us all together
02:20Wicked is the underdog story and the story that doesn't always get to be told
02:24The second one is really where all of us actors get to play and really dive deep and dig into the arc and the storyline
02:34I was so emotional like it was the first time I've ever experienced Wicked
02:37To sit back and really watch it you can kind of let it wash over you in a different way
02:42Where you're not also thinking about anything else
02:45The reimagined world first coming to life on Broadway 22 years ago
02:51But long before that we first saw that famous yellow brick road
02:56With Dorothy and her new friends marching off to see the Wizard of Oz
03:04Honestly, I feel very privileged to be a part of the story in that way
03:08Because of course, Wizard of Oz is such a classic
03:12Perhaps a friendly game of cards once I'm done working
03:16Whatever you say, Madam Governor
03:18I asked you to call me Nessa
03:21Remember?
03:22Marissa Bodie's character taking a more central role as Elphaba's younger sister
03:26Heartbroken and now ruler of munchkin land
03:29I'm anessa rose defender to no end
03:31I know she's not everybody's favorite character
03:33But I think it comes down to like the understanding of how all of us really end up where we do in this storyline
03:41You call it a defender, Anessa defender
03:43But the truth is that you're just looking at her humanness, right?
03:47Exactly, and I think that's the point really of this whole film is seeing the humanity
03:53Bodie the first disabled actress to ever play Nessa in film or on Broadway
03:58As a disabled character being represented in a film this big in general
04:02I think the main focus of a disabled character is just wanting to be fixed or wanting to be healed
04:09And so I think when you add more layers to her of truly what her deepest desires are and
04:16Making tweaks without changing the magic of the story
04:19Bodie recounting the first time she saw the music
04:22What were you thinking when you were 11 and you saw it?
04:25Oh my gosh, that was really the first time I had seen a character in a wheelchair on stage
04:30And at that point in my life, that was something I think that I needed to see
04:34The Broadway show still mesmerizing generations and continuing to sell out week after week
04:42It's amazing to see how Wicked is so cross-cultural
04:45I mean people flying in from around the world for a night or two just to see us do it on the stage is like
04:51It's so affirming to know that this story can relate to so many people
04:54I think it's a testament to how universal the messaging is in the show and how timeless it is too
05:00Ali Trim and Lencia Cabeta transforming into Glinda and Elphaba on stage night after night
05:06This is how they paint me green
05:07It's just so glamorous playing Glinda because of her glamorous, glamorous costumes
05:14I feel like you guys must approach this like athletes right because I mean you're doing this what eight times a week
05:21Sometimes nine on occasion 11
05:25So as much as 11 times a week, how do you prepare yourself for that? That's a lot of work
05:30Yeah, it's it's it's definitely some athlete behavior
05:33For many attending Wicked is their first Broadway experience
05:37So what does it feel like to introduce the world to Elphaba and Glinda?
05:42That's actually the first time someone's like phrased it like that to me so that I just was like whoa
05:47That's a huge honor. Holy cow. We get to be like the sort of template or like the
05:53Groundwork for people's connection to these characters from the costumes. This is the big bubble dress
05:59So this is my baddie witch dress to the music. I became
06:03Obsessed with the music specifically and to this day
06:05There are certain melodies that I sing every day that still could bring me to tears what melodies unlimited
06:12Wrecks me. I mean destroys me emotionally like it's there's so much hope
06:18in that
06:19Melody to me
06:21Separate from the lyrics just like the way it sounds
06:24It has a choke hold on my heart forever. I think I get the same way with the
06:28Don't don't don't don't don't yeah
06:31It's everywhere in the beginning of the show at the end of the show anytime. I'm like
06:36Oh my god, it's wicked. We're doing it
06:38It's so special the cast hearing those melodies at an advanced screening of the new movie with ariana grande
06:45I just think it's so impressive like how many
06:47Details that john chu can add to the story that we know so well
06:50So I just feel like there's depth in the film version that
06:55Just adds a cherry on top to the story the cultural phenomenon keeping fans obsessed
07:00No
07:00No
07:09Many hopeful sunday the adventure in oz
07:12Will continue do you think that there could be a third wicked?
07:16I mean
07:17There could be I do think and i'm always like
07:21A girl who likes to keep
07:23Classics classics, you know
07:24I think there is ambiguity at the end of the second film. I wouldn't be mad at it
07:32A big thank you to geo and when we come back a newly revamped
