A London mother has urged people to donate plasma after her daughter required urgent treatment for a rare disease that first presented as a common childhood illness. Rebecca Nako, 51, said she was shocked to learn that her daughter Winifred, then seven, had been diagnosed with Kawasaki disease in 2023—an illness she had previously only heard of through an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.Kawasaki disease is a rare disease that causes inflammation in blood vessels throughout the body and mainly affects children under the age of five. Although it can be treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and aspirin, the condition can lead to serious heart damage if left untreated.

00:00I don't know if anybody else knows very much about Kawasaki's, but the only reason I had
00:09ever heard of it before was because there was an episode of Grey's Anatomy with Kawasaki's in it.
00:13I wanted to give plasma because my daughter was the recipient of IVIG when she was diagnosed with
00:19Kawasaki's disease a couple of years ago, and so obviously she was very lucky to receive that.
00:24The actual process of giving the plasma was really, you know, it was very simple and I sat comfortably in a chair and I just had to squeeze my hand tightly at some point and then let go of another and it was completely painless, it was super simple and I really hope to get the opportunity to do it again soon.
