Nick Holliday from Belvedere Farms explains how pasture-raised chickens and mixed-species cover crops are improving soil health.
Transcript
00:00this is a paddock where we've had the chickens in and we've planted the mixed species cover crop
00:04and you can see there is still plenty of giant rat's tail but when it is short it is relatively
00:09palatable to the cattle but more importantly is what we are growing alongside it here so
00:17you can see we've got plenty of foraged sorghum we've got cowpea we've got sunflowers we've got
00:22loosened coming up you know just incredibly nutritious diverse forage for the cattle and
00:30all that this paddock has seen is heavy impacts from the pasture raised chickens
00:36and a planting with a mixed species cover crop so we've got uh three flocks of 500 pasture raised
00:43chickens they're in mobile sheds that we move around the landscape surrounded by electric netting and
00:49um yeah they do an incredible job on these pastures they drop a great deal of fertility and nitrogen
00:57where they sleep at night they scratch and disturb the soil surface and they really change the soil
01:04ecology where they've been so we don't just see the cover crop we've planted coming up but we're
01:10actually seeing perennial pasture species like roads grass re-emerging because we've managed to
01:18suppress that rat's tail and improve the fertility of the country and create an environment more
01:23suitable to stuff other than the grt the cattle on these pastures are finishing really well we've got
01:30a paddock to plate grass fed beef business and we're really happy with the quality of steers we're sending
01:34off and it's getting better all the time and the more diversity we have in these pastures the better
01:40outcomes we're going to get with our finishes we're finishing angus steers at between 220 and 240 kilos we're
01:46getting really good fat color cover we're getting good marbling our customers are incredibly happy with
01:52it and so are we
