00:00Well, behind me is the Invasion Day rally in Sydney on Gadigal land.
00:06Thousands are marching the streets today, heading up to Yarbon Festival, which is a
00:11celebration of Indigenous culture.
00:14We heard talks earlier at the rally, which included calls for action on deaths in custody,
00:19action on reparations for the stolen generations, and from family members of those who have
00:24been impacted by the ongoing legacy of colonisation.
00:28So a lot is happening on the ground here in Sydney today as they march the streets.
00:35We march today on January 26th to stand in the resistance of our ancestors and to obviously
00:39expose the Australian Government for their ongoing corruption, not just towards First
00:44Nations people, but everyone within society, and obviously to call for an abolishment to
00:49that to January 26th and any day that celebrates invasion of First Nations people or invasion
00:55of anyone.
00:57Organisers of the rally, Dunga Adi Man, Paul Silver, is calling for the Government to mark
01:03this day as a day of mourning.
01:04It was a call that was put forward in 1938 by a group of Indigenous men and women who
01:09march the streets similarly like today, calling for that day of mourning nearly 88 years ago.
01:15The legacy of January 26th marches is continuing today with calls, as you can hear behind me,
01:22of sovereignty, of land rights, of continued justice for Indigenous peoples, and that will
01:25continue across the country today as people mark this day.
01:28All right, Kirsty Wallauer there, thanks very much.
