The Renault 5 is definitely not a conventional car and not all of its swings hit their target. That's why in this video we're going to go through the 5 things that surprised me most about the Renault 5. And it's not all bad. So to find out what's going on, stick around as Dave Takes It On.

01:00Right yellow, we've got our Renault 5, which we've had on extended test for the last three weeks.
01:06So, without much further ado, let's just get on with it.
01:10İzlediğiniz için teşekkür ederim.
01:13Well, starting at number five.
01:15It's really beginning to show my age on this.
01:19I'm sure this is aimed at the millennials, who are much more internet savvy than I am.
01:25It is this little Renault character.
01:28I don't even want to say his name, but every time you're driving along, it pops up.
01:33It listens to every word I say, and it keeps on going, I don't understand that question.
01:39And I say, I didn't ask you a question.
01:41I was talking.
01:43Unfortunately, I can't help you with that.
01:45Oh, I didn't understand the question.
01:47It is so annoying.
01:49It is not a helper.
01:51It's supposed to, I believe, help.
01:54And maybe someone who's 20, 50 years younger than me might appreciate that or laugh at it or find it amusing.
02:01Me, it's so annoying that the first thing I did when that started popping up all over the place was I got my eldest son to find a way of turning it off.
02:11And the really good news is you can.
02:16Now, while hating Renault was a really annoying feature that should be banned from all cars, number four is actually quite the opposite.
02:24It's something that you don't find on many EVs, and it should be on every single EV ever made or ever about to be made.
02:33So let's have a look what it is.
02:34We're dealing with the charging side of the business, and here is the charger port.
02:39Simple push button opens.
02:41It's not that, by the way.
02:42There's a lot more going on.
02:44You've got your normal plug.
02:46CCS2, of course, in the normal way.
02:48There's no difference there.
02:49You've got a push button there, which tells the car whether the charging port is closed or not.
02:55And look down here.
02:56We've got an off button and we've got a padlock.
02:59Now, let me explain.
03:00When we go out filming, the number of times we come across cars which have got the plug locked into the socket,
03:08and there's nothing they can do to break it.
03:11I came across one on the M6 up north.
03:13A gentleman had a Polestar, and it turned out that the Polestar does not have any sort of button anywhere on it
03:22or on the app to release this, and it relies on the charger to release it.
03:28And unfortunately, he'd set it to 100% state of charge, and he only wanted a short charge,
03:32and he couldn't get off it until it got up to 100%, which took ages and spoiled his day.
03:39So, we find it also Chester East Services on the M56, where Nissan Leaf was actually stuck in,
03:46and there was a grid serve engineer trying to get him off at the time.
03:49So, the feature here is the little padlock.
03:53Now, what does it do?
03:55It's really simple, so intuitive.
03:57If you are plugged in and charging, and the car is unlocked,
04:03so don't worry, nobody can come here and just turn it off on its own,
04:07as long as the car is unlocked,
04:09if you press the button, the charging session stops instantly,
04:14and the plug is released instantly.
04:18We're going to show you this in action, because it is so impressive to see.
04:21You can just wander up, and without a worry in the world,
04:25you can end any session, any charging session that we've ever tried.
04:30And we've tried pretty much all the chargers.
04:33You just press that button, session ends, you can pull the plug out.
04:37So, let's press that while it's charging, and see what happens.
04:42Ah, the contact is killed.
04:44That now comes out.
04:46And that is such a useful feature.
04:48Coming from a Tesla, we have the opposite,
04:51where the button is on the charger,
04:54if we're using a Tesla supercharger,
04:56and that does very much the same thing,
04:58but it also controls the flap.
05:00But that, on every EV,
05:02I think should be absolutely compulsory.
05:06It's just peace of mind.
05:08It doesn't matter what the charge is doing,
05:10what your app is doing,
05:11what your display is doing,
05:13if you want to end the charge,
05:15as long as the car is unlocked,
05:17and these are proximity,
05:18so when you walk towards them,
05:19they do unlock.
05:20Press the button,
05:21you can pull the plug out,
05:23end of subject.
05:24And I think that is a really, really good feature
05:28that has surprised me on this Renault 5.
05:31Okay, so we're coming from a positive,
05:36and we're coming back onto the negative side,
05:37and that's the driver assist features.
05:40Now, we're not talking safety here.
05:42Safety features on virtually all the cars
05:45are absolutely brilliant.
05:46They're designed to protect you.
05:48What we're talking about here is the driver assist.
05:51These are the features that are meant to help you,
05:54and in some cases,
05:55they actually actively work against you
05:57or really frustrate you.
05:59The first one I came across,
06:01I have found a way around this, by the way,
06:03and it's quite logical once you know it,
06:04but nobody tells you this,
06:06and that is the autocruise,
06:08the cruise control,
06:09adaptive cruise control,
06:11whatever you like to call it.
06:12And this is where you're coming down
06:13the slip road on the motorway,
06:15and you're doing 50 mile an hour,
06:17you join the motorway,
06:19and in front of you is a set button
06:20for setting autocruise or cruise control,
06:22and if you press that,
06:24it will default and set the cruise control
06:27to whatever speed you're doing,
06:2951 miles an hour.
06:31So annoying,
06:32and nobody actually educates you
06:34as to how to change that.
06:36So the only way out of it,
06:37before I found the fix,
06:39was to switch it off again,
06:41accelerate manually up to 70 mile an hour,
06:43and then set it again,
06:45and then it would set at 70 mile an hour.
06:48There is a little button on the steering wheel
06:50which will actually do that for you.
06:52it will ignore the set button
06:55which always sets the speed you're doing,
06:58and it will allow you to set
06:59whatever the speed limit it's showing.
07:01So there is a workaround,
07:03but they don't tell you these sorts of things.
07:05It's not intuitive.
07:06The set button doesn't.
07:09But the speed limit also brings me back
07:12to the second bit of this
07:13which really annoys me,
07:15and that is it doesn't always know
07:17what the speed is doing,
07:19it doesn't always know what road it's on,
07:21and sometimes it mixes the two.
07:23Let me give you an example.
07:25We joined the motorway down the slip road,
07:28we got onto the motorway,
07:29and for some reason,
07:31the dashboard was saying
07:32speed limit's 70 mile an hour,
07:34the cruise control was saying it's 50.
07:38And every time I accelerated above 50,
07:41it was bing, bing, bing,
07:43you're speeding, you're speeding.
07:44We're on a four-lane motorway.
07:46It says 70 mile an hour,
07:48but this thing thinks it's 50.
07:51And there is no way of overriding it
07:54that I have yet found.
07:55That is so annoying
07:57because I know it's 70,
07:59the car shows it's 70,
08:01and yet it won't let you do it.
08:02Now, the way around it
08:04was a really stupid one,
08:06and that is you come to some roadworks
08:07and there's a big 50 sign,
08:09and the car goes,
08:09oh, and it changes the dashboard to 50,
08:12and then when you get to the end
08:13of the roadworks and says de-restricted,
08:15it goes 70 and lets you go to 70.
08:17It's a crazy system,
08:19but if the car believes
08:20the speed limit is not what it actually is,
08:23there's very little you can do to override it.
08:29Now, number two,
08:30we're back on the positive side again.
08:31There's a lot to say for this car
08:33that's really positive,
08:34but are you one of these fastidious people
08:37or what do they call them, OCD,
08:41who has to have everything just right?
08:42Have you ever been for a picnic
08:44and at the end of the picnic
08:46you've noticed there's a load of crumbs all around
08:48and it just upsets you.
08:51You can't leave it.
08:53You need the vacuum to clear it up
08:55before you can go home.
08:57If that's you,
08:58boy, have I got something for you.
09:00And it's,
09:02yeah, I'm not going to hold it like that
09:04because that's,
09:05yeah, say no more.
09:07What's this?
09:08Very, very simple.
09:09On one end you have a type 2 socket.
09:13That fits in there perfectly.
09:16On the other end you have,
09:19look at that,
09:21a three pin socket.
09:24So, at the end of your picnic
09:26you simply plug this into your car,
09:29plug your vacuum cleaner into that,
09:31hoover up your crumbs,
09:34unplug it,
09:34and off you go home again.
09:36It's so simple.
09:37But no,
09:38on a serious note,
09:40these are brilliant.
09:41So this is something called vehicle to load
09:42and it just allows you to plug in
09:44your vacuum cleaner
09:45or your sandwich toaster
09:47or your kettle
09:48or your tasimo machine
09:50or whatever it is you want
09:52to make your life very much easier.
09:54Or if you go down the beach with the kids
09:55and you've got big inflatables to blow up,
09:58put an electric pump in there.
09:59Saves your lungs,
10:01saves you getting all lightheaded.
10:02Brilliant feature.
10:04It will advance in future years
10:06to vehicle to grid.
10:07Totally different subject.
10:09But vehicle to load
10:10is so useful at this stage.
10:15Now, number one
10:16was a really strange one for me
10:18coming from a Tesla
10:19because it is regen braking.
10:23Having driven a Tesla
10:24for years and years and years,
10:26it simply,
10:27you just get used to
10:29the regen braking that Teslas have.
10:31It is very, very powerful
10:33and it also allows you
10:35to come to a complete stop.
10:37It's called one-pedal driving.
10:39So when you're driving along,
10:40you keep your foot on the accelerator.
10:42As you're approaching a set of lights
10:44at a certain distance before it,
10:46you just take your foot off the accelerator.
10:49The car will coast quite quickly
10:51down to a stop and stop.
10:53And it's a fantastic feature.
10:56Love it.
10:57Takes a bit of getting used to.
10:58But on this one,
11:00it actually had me totally baffled.
11:03And I'll tell you why.
11:04I'd searched all the controls
11:06and everything else
11:07to try and find out the regen
11:09because when I first drove this one,
11:11I took my foot off the accelerator
11:13and it just kept going.
11:15It's as if there was no braking at all.
11:17It's more like pushing in the clutch
11:20on a petrol car and just coasting.
11:21It had no effect at all.
11:24And when I was driving around,
11:26I was getting very, very poor economy.
11:29It was doing between 2.9 and 3 miles
11:32per kilowatt hour,
11:33which on a car like this is appalling.
11:34It should be four or more.
11:36So I was trying to find the bottom to press
11:38to change the regenerative braking
11:40from almost nothing to something worth having.
11:43Took a long while,
11:44but eventually I found it.
11:46It's on the gear lever.
11:47You pull the gear lever down into drive.
11:50If you pull it again,
11:51it switches into B.
11:53It is so simple.
11:55There should be an indication on the screen
11:57which mode you're in
11:59rather than just a little letter
12:01in the top corner.
12:02Anyway, once I switched into B,
12:04the car transformed itself.
12:07It was a different beast altogether.
12:09The economy leapt up
12:10to between 3.9 and 4 miles per kilowatt hour.
12:14I mean, I've been losing
12:15about a third of the total range of the car.
12:17and it began behaving much more
12:21like something that I was used to
12:23with one pedal driving.
12:24It won't do one pedal driving,
12:26but that's not the end of the world
12:27because now it will bring you down
12:29to almost a stop.
12:31But the last couple of miles an hour,
12:33it just then creeps.
12:35An awful lot of comments I get on the channel
12:37are about one pedal driving
12:39and how when you first do it,
12:41it's horrible
12:41because the technical foot off the accelerator
12:43just slams on the brakes.
12:44but after a short while,
12:45it's just lovely to do.
12:47You don't need to press your brake pedal.
12:49Everything is just done on the accelerator.
12:52It would be nice for this to have it.
12:54But the really strange thing
12:56from my point of view
12:57is no Tesla ever made
13:00has had any sort of control
13:03to be able to turn the regen off.
13:05And the reason they don't
13:07is because without regen,
13:09they have rubbish range.
13:10So why on earth do we get a control
13:14which allows you to turn regen off?
13:17Because you might forget
13:18and then drive around town for a week
13:20and all of a sudden
13:21you're down at 2.93 miles per kilowatt hour.
13:24Doesn't make any sense
13:25why that's a feature.
13:27You either have regen or you don't.
13:29If you've got regen,
13:30make it a decent strength.
13:31If you can, make it one pedal driving.
13:33It would improve the car dramatically.
13:35But it does have regen braking
13:37and that massively affects the range.
13:39So am I really nitpicking?
13:41Am I spoilt having come from a Tesla
13:43to a Renault 5?
13:46You might think so.
13:48It would be interesting for you
13:49to have a look at the full review of this car
13:51after we've been driving for a couple of weeks
13:53and you'll be able to find that
13:55in our playlist.
13:57And that gives a much broader scope on it.
14:00But this one is just the five features
14:02that have really surprised me,
14:05shocked me, angered me,
14:06irritated me.
14:07just the things that really stand out.
14:11So thanks very much for watching.
