00:00In the tower, without a camera, 10 years into making right here, y'all.
00:08Chris has been on the other side of the camera.
00:11And finally, now it's your turn.
00:12I know.
00:13So here's the rules of engagement, okay?
00:16It's every man for himself.
00:18Look at that.
00:19I mean, oh my God.
00:21Nice.
00:22Here we go.
00:22Oh, there we go.
00:23Don't fall.
00:24Oh, shoot.
00:25Crank down.
00:25Easier said than done.
00:26Oh, look at that.
00:28That's what happens when you don't bow.
00:29Oh my gosh, dude.
00:30You have an absolute giant on you.
00:32I don't know.
00:33It's something weird.
00:34Look at the drone monitor, point it at the fish out there and start driving to it.
00:40Yeah, look at that.
00:43There he is.
00:48Yeah, that's a good one.
00:52Chasing the Sun is brought to you by Florida Water Sports.
00:57Get all you need for the water at fws.fish.
01:01Humminbird.
01:02Simply.
01:03Clearly.
01:04Better.
01:05Minn Kota.
01:08And by Pirates Cove Marina.
01:13You enjoy the gulf.
01:14We'll take care of the rest.
01:15So for me to see somebody else behind the camera is a freaky Friday.
01:32I'm nervous and excited to try and catch my first tarpon.
01:37I've seen nine seasons go by and I've been in the boat with some amazing catches, hookups,
01:47big, small, doesn't matter what kind of tarpon it is.
01:50It's so entertaining and awesome to be a part of it.
01:54With Meredith being out of town on one of her, you know, treks.
01:58Yeah.
01:59I had the opportunity to finally get in the driver's seat.
02:00Yeah.
02:01Well, it's a great idea.
02:02We have the perfect weather.
02:03This is the perfect time of year to do it.
02:05Can I get $30, please, sir?
02:08There's the dolphin.
02:10You don't have to coach her, Chris.
02:12You're coaching me.
02:13I'm coaching her.
02:14We're all out of position here.
02:16Coming up to the bait barge, making the usual exchange, and I'm not in my regular spot,
02:22completely different than the 10 years prior to work.
02:25Now, my entire goal is to follow along with what you do, try and listen to what you have to say,
02:31which is, you know, usually we both have our own goals.
02:33Yeah.
02:34So to do this right, I got a couple of people to help out film, brought Cheryl back in to film us.
02:40Yeah.
02:41It's just, it was awesome.
02:42In the tower.
02:43All right.
02:44Let's go.
02:45Without a camera.
02:46Sounds good on paper.
02:48All the stars have aligned, but it's tarpon fishing.
02:51Yeah.
02:52And tarpon do what they want, not what you want.
02:54If I see like 30 fish in a pack right now, I'm not stopping.
02:59So we're looking for a hundred or more?
03:01Yeah.
03:02I like schools of a hundred or more.
03:04So talking about the pressure that I'm kind of feeling and I feel most days, the only
03:08way to get rid of that pressure is to be successful.
03:11To find that first group of fish, to hook the first fish.
03:14Each box I have to check is going to take a little bit of stress away.
03:18Oh, there's a whole big patch.
03:19Look right here.
03:20They're everywhere.
03:21Oh my God.
03:22We're going over them.
03:23We just ran them slap over.
03:24So we did quickly find a group of fish.
03:28We're a long ways from done, but I at least get to check that first box.
03:31All right.
03:32We have fish to play with.
03:33I'm wanting to get a bait on the hook for both of us so we can both get a shot.
03:38And as soon as I pull the rod down, you're like, I got to switch the reel to the other
03:42side.
03:43No.
03:44Yeah.
03:45I'm left handed.
03:46Are you serious?
03:47Yeah.
03:48Why is that a big deal?
03:49The northern states where it's legal for you to switch the...
03:53Not down here.
03:54I can do it now.
03:55Just go away.
03:56Go away.
03:57If you ever wanted to go fishing in Florida and say I'm not actually from Florida, this
04:01is how you do it.
04:02Okay?
04:03If you reel with your right hand, you're doing it wrong.
04:05There's a reason when you pull a brand new spinning reel out of the packaging, the
04:09handle is already on the left side.
04:11It's because most people are right handed.
04:13Yes.
04:14And it's just very nice that these companies provide an option.
04:16That's true.
04:17That's true.
04:18See, now as a left handed person, I appreciate you bending the rules for me.
04:29I like a slow, steady pace.
04:30That's my preferred speed I want these schools to swim at.
04:33It gives us a predictable movement.
04:35And we're trying to make that 45 degree intersection with our bait and the school of
04:39fish so it's easy to make that shot when you know how they're moving.
04:42When they're just kind of milling around all over the place, it's hard.
04:45And then if they're moving really fast, it's hard.
04:47All right.
04:48So here's the rules of engagement.
04:49Okay?
04:50It's every man for himself.
04:52I was going to try to be your guide, but I feel good.
04:57Here, show me where you're doing.
04:59I am.
05:00I'm going to show you one time.
05:01Okay.
05:02All right.
05:03So I take this guy, see that nostril right there?
05:04Yeah.
05:05Go sideways, right there nostril.
05:06And just kind of wiggle it through.
05:07You want it to work through nice and easy, just like that.
05:10And the bead is right where it needs to be.
05:12That's it.
05:13Yep.
05:14That'll stop it from going through too far.
05:15And you're good.
05:16And that school of fish, Chris, looks to be about right here.
05:19So I would cast out here out the side just a little bit.
05:25There you go.
05:26Just feed some line out.
05:27That was not a very good cast.
05:30Well, I didn't know how far you wanted me to go.
05:31I'm just kidding.
05:32I don't really know.
05:33I can't really see them.
05:35Sneak the bait into the school.
05:36Yeah, slip it into the school and let it just hang out.
05:39And then you can feel your bait start to go up.
05:41I should not be here.
05:42Yeah.
05:43Yeah.
05:44That's it.
05:45Nice.
05:46Now feed out just a little line.
05:47Oh, that's probably good.
05:48Click it in.
05:49Yeah, they're starting to move in now.
05:54There it is.
05:55Real, real, real, hard real.
05:56Real.
05:57There you go.
05:58Now bow and he jumps.
05:59Sonny Jones.
06:02That wasn't even a close second.
06:03He just nailed that.
06:06There's like three different ways they bite.
06:08They will either bite and continue to swim at you.
06:11That's what your fish did.
06:12And then sometimes they'll bite and kind of turn sideways a little bit and that's better.
06:17He's not convinced.
06:18He's hooked.
06:19Here we go.
06:20Here he goes.
06:21He's getting ready.
06:22The best is when they bite and they turn 180 degrees and just take off.
06:27Because now that fish has turned away from you.
06:29So the hook's really pulling into the corner of his mouth.
06:31And that's the best hook up ratio is when that fish will turn and head away.
06:36And then once he breaks out of the pack.
06:37So he's trying to get back with his pack of fish right now.
06:39Once he breaks out of the pack, then you can start to fight him.
06:44And you want to save every bit of energy you have.
06:47They're on the surface right there.
06:48Yep.
06:49That's the school.
06:50He's starting to trail behind the school a little bit.
06:53Oh my gosh, dude.
06:54You have an absolute giant on there.
06:58Wow.
06:59Look at that.
07:01We're getting down there in line.
07:04You can have 200 yards disappear quickly, which is probably not far from where you're at.
07:20Right now.
07:21Well.
07:22But once they get about 200 yards out, all of a sudden he will stop at some point.
07:29Oh my gosh, dude, you have an absolute giant on there.
07:34Wow.
07:36Look at that.
07:37Well, we should have planned it like this originally.
07:39But since we didn't plan it in seasons past for you to take a day off from filming and come fishing,
07:45it just kind of happened that Meredith is out of town and we need to go film a tarpon show.
07:50That's right.
07:51I mean, I've always wanted to catch one.
07:53And, you know, to be honest, I've tried a couple of times just with no success.
07:58Well, this is going to be a while.
08:00Looks like.
08:01Wow.
08:03We're getting down there in line.
08:06No, you're good.
08:07No, we're good.
08:09For me, this is another, like, big box to check on taking somebody on their first tarpon trip fishing with me.
08:15You threw to the fish, you got the bite, you got the hookup.
08:18We've checked a bunch of boxes already and this is your first shot, you know?
08:23Knowing that all that line that is screaming off, I have to get back.
08:27So, I'm so glad this is my first fish because not only do I have the adrenaline, you know,
08:33I've still got all the energy from my Wheaties that morning.
08:36Man, I hope this fish does what I'm wanting him to do where he's going to.
08:42Just what?
08:43He's swimming.
08:44He's coming back at you, but he's swimming right along this sand up here in the beach.
08:48I mean, it's just a lot prettier to land your fish up here.
08:51Oh, here we go.
08:52There he is.
08:53Here he's going to jump now.
08:57Oh, there he is.
08:58Look at him.
08:59Did you see him?
09:00Yeah.
09:01He was close to the beach.
09:02He is on the beach.
09:03When I saw him turn towards the beach, the first time I was like, all right, we got a chance.
09:10The top side button will turn it on and then the one below it.
09:14Oh, right there?
09:15Yeah, I think that turns it on.
09:17All right.
09:18And you'll see the whole front screen light up.
09:20Only the camera guy has the first tarpon of his life.
09:25Maybe the biggest one we've ever filmed on this show.
09:28Wow.
09:29Has him now in striking distance, right?
09:31Oh, there he came.
09:32Wow.
09:33And then he's sitting here trying to coach me up on which underwater camera to grab.
09:37The good one?
09:38Fish.
09:39Fish, Chris.
09:40Yeah.
09:41Fish.
09:42That first look that we get at the fish, the actual fish.
09:44You know, it's one thing when we see him roll at a distance.
09:47Yeah, when he's close enough and you can get scale.
09:49Oh, yeah.
09:50You're like, now I see why this took so long.
09:53It's a giant fish.
09:54If I had to guess, that's like 150 and it could be larger.
09:56I don't know.
09:57There's your leader.
09:58Crank down like two feet.
09:59I'm working on it.
10:00Just crank down.
10:01Crank down.
10:02All right.
10:03Got a leader in the rod.
10:04There you go.
10:05That makes me feel good.
10:06We can call him a catch now.
10:07That is a wide fish.
10:08Look how thick he is.
10:10Holy cow.
10:17I said, what we do, we kind of test him out.
10:19Crank and try to pull that line down his back.
10:21Oh, you're good.
10:22He's going to come back this way now.
10:23We pull the line down his back and try to see if you can stop him.
10:26If you can't stop him, then you follow him around the motor.
10:28So now go ahead and crank back down and pull back left.
10:32And you're like, just get that line across his back.
10:35Get that line.
10:36And once he did that last time, I could just feel him kind of go, okay.
10:40It's the best feeling in the world.
10:42Yeah, baby.
10:44That is a giant.
10:46Yes.
10:47You can't believe it.
10:49All right.
10:50Oh my God.
10:51Look at that.
10:52To have him hooked perfect.
10:53Go ahead and flip the bail open and just stick the rod in the rod holder.
10:56To have your own personal face grab with a tarpon.
11:01Go ahead and get both hands in there if you can.
11:03Down deep.
11:04Try to get the thumbs down deep in there.
11:06It changes me as an angler and the way I think about this type of fishing in general and this species.
11:12Hurry up.
11:14You're all right.
11:15You make us do this for like 10 minutes all the time.
11:17I know.
11:18I now have a new appreciation for trying to hold a tarpon while we're trying to get what we need so that people can see the, you know, the fish of this caliber in that good light, you know.
11:32Here, I'm going to speed us up a little bit.
11:33Get his head down so we can get him swimming.
11:36Just push his head down.
11:37He's good.
11:38Turn him upright.
11:39Keep his body upright.
11:40Now push him away from us.
11:41He's swimming.
11:42All right.
11:43I can push him away.
11:44Yes.
11:45Hey, that is a solid 150 pounder.
11:51First bite.
11:52I know.
11:53First bait.
11:54First cast.
11:55Are you kidding me?
11:56I did not expect it to be that intimate.
11:59And, and I mean, it was emotional.
12:02Wow.
12:08Woo!
12:09Good job.
12:12200 million years of evolution hasn't changed.
12:14It's just a migrating eating machine.
12:17Amazing.
12:18And they're really good at it.
12:19Yeah, they're really good at it.
12:20And even better at avoiding humans.
12:22The whole school is right there.
12:23Let's go find them here.
12:24Let's do it.
12:25This time it's your turn and I will mock you.
12:27No.
12:28We're going to double up.
12:29Oh.
12:30Now it's every man for himself.
12:32Look at that.
12:33Nice.
12:34There we go.
12:35Oh, there we go.
12:36Don't fall.
12:37Oh shoot.
12:38There we go.
12:39Oh, there we go.
12:40Don't fall.
12:41Oh shoot.
12:42Yeah, when you first said like, hey, let's do it with me fishing, I'm thinking, why haven't
12:45we done that yet?
12:46I mean, because we're always trying to check a box, but there's this giant box right here.
12:52Chris, originator of the show, hadn't got to do it.
12:59That was the biggest box.
13:00We got to check it.
13:01Well, and having lovely Cheryl to be able to do it.
13:02All the planets lined up.
13:03My first tarpon's in the rear view mirror.
13:04Yeah.
13:05You're in the club.
13:06And I'm really kind of glad that you're up next.
13:07I'm going to lollygag most likely.
13:08Well, we'll see.
13:09It's a lot easier just fishing than it is filming.
13:10Oh yeah.
13:11Yeah.
13:12Show it up.
13:13Show it up.
13:14Got it.
13:15Got it.
13:16Got it.
13:17Got it.
13:18Got it.
13:19Got it.
13:20Got it.
13:21Got it.
13:22Got it.
13:23Got it.
13:24Got it.
13:25Got it.
13:26Got it.
13:27Got it.
13:28Got it.
13:29Got it.
13:30Got it.
13:31Got it.
13:32Here.
13:33Beat my hook.
13:34Where do I put it?
13:35Cast over there.
13:36Yeah.
13:37It's my turn.
13:38I don't care if it's your turn again.
13:39I honestly just want to find the fish again and get hooked up again.
13:42Because every second that one of these rods is bending, I'm pretty excited about it.
13:46Yeah.
13:47That's a better group there.
13:48Yeah.
13:49I mean, still doesn't look like the mother load, but probably worth this.
13:53I always throw one of these little rubber beads on here and it keeps my bait from
13:59getting fouled up on the hook.
14:02I think I'm really downplaying the amount of detail and specific presentation.
14:07Those little things like the bead that you put on to keep the bait in a certain area.
14:12It'll kind of hold that bait's nose between the barb of the hook and that bead right there.
14:17And that way he stays right in the middle.
14:19That's just one of the things that makes this seem so easy.
14:25So if we're here and they're there, you've got to throw on the outside.
14:28Don't worry about throwing across each other.
14:29It's perfectly fine to cross each other.
14:31I'm putting us in the highest odd scenario.
14:34And I think that's all you can do as a guide is try to recreate that day after day after day,
14:38knowing you got the best tackle.
14:40You're putting yourself in the best position to catch that fish.
14:45Here we go.
14:46Oh, there we are.
14:47Don't fall.
14:48Oh shoot.
14:49I'm good.
14:50I'm good.
14:51Oh.
14:52He hit a lot harder than that really big one the first time.
14:56Oh, bow.
14:57You'll hear me a lot going, get ready to bow, get ready to bow.
15:00If that fish jumps and you're rigid and you've got all that pressure when he comes out of the water.
15:05Yeah.
15:06It's a zing pow.
15:08Crank down, crank down.
15:09That's it.
15:10That's it.
15:11Easier said than done.
15:12Oh, look at that.
15:13Oh.
15:14That's what happens when you don't bow.
15:16Oh, that's called zing pow.
15:19That's all right.
15:20I don't know what it is.
15:21It's just, that's tarpon fishermen in general.
15:23We count jumps.
15:24Oh.
15:25Oh, he came off.
15:26Nice.
15:27We count leader catches.
15:28We count bites.
15:29Oh, reel, reel, reel, reel.
15:31There you go.
15:32Bow and he jumps.
15:33Bow and he jumps.
15:34Oh, that's a big one too.
15:35Oh, he come off.
15:36All right, wind him up.
15:37But when you see what happens in between those actual catches.
15:41He's still on there, Chris.
15:42Reel.
15:43He's still on there.
15:44Reel, reel, reel.
15:45There's so much excitement.
15:47There's so much going on.
15:48Oh, there we go.
15:49That's it.
15:50Nice, nice, nice, nice.
15:51It's a pretty epic day whether you land a certain number of fish or not.
15:56Oh, now he's off.
16:01Look at that.
16:02I mean.
16:03Oh, my God.
16:04Nice.
16:06This fish starts jumping way out there.
16:09And I could tell right off he was a good sized fish but nothing like the one that you had.
16:14Yeah.
16:15Oh, yeah.
16:16He's already.
16:17Oh, God.
16:18Look at him jumping way out there.
16:19He's already 200 yards.
16:20It's like he's on a surface.
16:22I don't know.
16:23It's something weird.
16:24This got awkward and weird for me really quick because after so many tarpon fights, I just
16:33noticed something was different.
16:34Look at the trollingwater, pointed at the fish out there and start driving to it.
16:37Hit the big middle button to kick the prop on.
16:40Honestly, I thought maybe a shark or something was after him.
16:43And then my next thought was maybe he had a heart attack or something.
16:46He's either missing his tail, missing half his body, or he had a heart attack and died.
16:51But I can tell you, when that fish was way out there, I could see him just floating.
16:56Did it just go limp or you felt like you were just pulling?
16:59No, I knew the fish was still on it.
17:00He just wasn't fighting anymore.
17:02That's the weirdest thing I've ever seen.
17:05I'm not worried if it comes off.
17:07I just want to see what was going on and see if we can save this fish.
17:16We'll see you next time.
17:18Chasing the sun has been brought to you by...
17:22Minn Kota.

17:37And by...
17:39Pirates Cove Marina.
17:41You enjoy the gulf, we'll take care of the rest.
17:46Today we're here at the Panama City Beach Scottish Festival and Highland Games.
17:55We have a lot of stuff going on today.
17:57You can come and visit the clans, the families.
18:00You can find out your lineage and your history from them.
18:03We have multiple vendors.
18:04We've got some great food, authentic food.
18:06But we have some great entertainment.
18:07Four pipe bands here today.
18:09You love the pipes.
18:10And then we have the heavy athletics.
18:12The ancient games that have all derived basically from Scottish history.
18:15We're first used in battle.
18:17Tossing the caber, which is a large tree that they balance and throw.
18:21And it has to go end over end.
18:23Stone of strength.
18:24The hammer throw.
18:25The sheaf toss.
18:26And those are the big men and the women.
18:28They compete as well.
18:29As we say here on this day in Panama City Beach, that everyone is Scottish here.
18:34The first week of March in Panama City Beach.
18:36So if you're coming down for spring break or spring vacation or even the weekend.
18:41Come see us at the Panama City Beach Scottish Festival and Highland Games here at Frank Brown Park.
18:45That's the weirdest thing I've ever seen.
18:51He must be wrapped or something.
18:53Yeah, go drive out to him.
18:54He's tail wrapped I think.
18:55I knew something was odd.
18:58I just wanted to go see what was happening with the fish for his protection.
19:02He is lassoed around his tail.
19:04Oh my gosh.
19:05He came unhooked and he is literally lassoed around his tail.
19:09Wow.
19:10I get asked all the time, what's the weirdest thing you've ever seen out there?
19:13I'm pretty sure this is going to take the cake.
19:16Look at that propeller on his back end there.
19:19At least A, the fish is healthy and fine.
19:22B, we're going to at least get a leader touch on it now.
19:24I don't know if that actually even counts if you get lassoed by his tail.
19:30We'll give him one shot here.
19:31If not, we're just breaking them off.
19:37There we go.
19:38There we go.
19:39Now we got them proper.
19:41That was one of those face grabs that I never dreamed would have happened.
19:45And I'm pretty sure I need to go buy a lottery ticket today because my
19:48luck is pretty high right now.
19:50Yeah.
19:51He's biting me now.
19:52Alright, here we go.
19:57Hey, that's one way to do it.
19:58Tiger by the tail.
20:00Literally.
20:01I can't think of a better day.
20:03We had bizarre things happen.
20:05All the fish swam away healthy.
20:08Every goal we could have set for the day, we've accomplished.
20:11Yeah.
20:12To do it and have this face grab will be with me forever.
20:17It's that cool.
20:18And that's exactly why I do it over and over and take people to do it.
20:23Because seeing those experiences never gets old.
20:30You know what it is?
20:31It's time to celebrate.
20:32It is.
20:33It is.
20:34Back Upgrade.
20:39It is.
20:41Happy Hour.
20:43Happy Hour.
20:44Atévit.
20:46Great.
20:47Warmese.
