00:00watching those dolphins work that school of fish you can learn something every day on the water
00:08whatever you got he ain't showing off or he don't know his hook yet he's swimming to us maybe a
00:14little bit that's springtime in panel city beach right there big jack revels on the beach how about
00:20that that is why i love getting on this beach right there baby hey what you gonna catch on the beach
00:27who knows you never know yeah that's a good one chasing the sun is brought to you by
00:45florida water sports get all you need for the water at fws.fish hummingbird simply clearly better
00:54minn kota and by pirates cold marina you enjoy the gulf we'll take care of the rest
01:08good morning good morning where are we going in these conditions man you know we don't like to do
01:25things easy no this is a typical florida panhandle spring morning where it might be 80 or it might be
01:3350 and today we got 50. always settle like a good challenge you have in your mind what you want the
01:40weather to be and then it's then then it's what it actually is this north wind puts that beach
01:48nice and slick and you know it's one of my favorite things to do get out there and see what the beach
01:52has to offer i like it up here in the florida panhandle you know we do get some cool weather in
01:57the winter time which is nice i love it we actually get a little fall in the winter time it gives you a
02:02chance to get in the woods and do other stuff but then i wish we could just hit that switch and all
02:08of a sudden it was 80 85 degrees and blue skies but it's never the case no and and the other aspect
02:14is no two years no two seasons no two springs are ever the same
02:21inside all these strips of sand you have these little deep pockets that cut in here and it's not
02:27the fish are always going to hang out in there but on the morning like this when it's cold and windy
02:32you have all these shallow flats out here this fish don't like cold weather kind of like us that's
02:36why we live here but so on these cold nights they'll push off onto these little troughs it's
02:42the way these sandbars and the troughs cut in and out it always changes and it's almost blind fishing
02:48basically like we know the contours look correct but we don't know what fish are in there even if we're
02:52marking fish we don't we can't confirm what it is till we start catching them all right matt this is my uh
02:58uh do you want to catch everything that swims out here rig okay that's why i love having a plan like
03:05what we're doing first where we're you know fishing some shrimp on the bottom and you know just
03:10catching a variety of fish come straight in from the back like this just thread them on the hook just
03:15like that now we got a shrimp on a jig head nice uh kind of a fail-safe option to start with you put a
03:21put a shrimp on the bottom you're generally going to get a bite right once those conditions line up go
03:26go see if we can find something big and we'll let the boat drift in here backwards like this
03:32matt all the way up here you can grab one and just sling it up this way up towards that point wherever
03:40whatever looks fishy to you in my opinion that shrimp on a jig head it's bouncing it's hitting
03:44the bottom it's making some noise you have that shrimp kind of standing up off of it it's just the
03:49perfect presentation just perfect natural slow presentation all right matt we got them they're
03:58all right inside that point you don't know what it is yeah that's a whiting nice in my opinion when
04:06you get in an area you want to get that first bite kind of takes the pressure off a little bit
04:10definitely the whiting is not glamorous nope but he is kind of a target species for some people
04:16especially on you know beach fishing yeah it's a cool little fish it's kind of got to be related
04:20to a redfish don't you think i would say so and they all have that black tip on their tail like that
04:25you know redfish's got that big dot right here on his tail or i guess about right here but whiting's
04:29always on the tip of his tail right there but same thing we feed on a lot of crustaceans and shellfish and
04:37tasty little critters but today they get to go back whatever you gotta eat showing off or you don't know
04:43he's hooked yet he's swimming to us maybe a little bit yeah or it's the flounder what you got nope
04:50another whiting yours a little bigger trying to one-up me always now that we're getting some bites
04:59from these whiting i'm like all right we're on to something here not quite what we're looking for
05:04and uh at least we know there's life in there
05:06oh oh that's better fish all right i got one hooked up that's springtime in pountable city beach right
05:19there big jack crevels on the beach
05:39oh that's better fish oh it's on the bottom
05:42dang what'd you find i don't know yeah all sand i got hung on a stump yeah sand bottom
05:53did that really feel like a bite or i get excited that's that's why i do this right
05:59whatever it is i got it broke free from the bottom after you have a couple successful hook sets
06:05and it's actually a fish at that point in my mind anything that that gets close to that hook
06:11and bumps into it i'm gonna set the hook and i'm gonna act like it's the fish of a lifetime you're
06:15gonna go through all the motions with it until we get it beside the boat and then you've got to decide
06:19what to do with it that's right and then i realized it was just a piece of grass on the bottom you do
06:23see some of that this stuff changes so fast that you know one day it's dunes and and sea oats and the
06:31next day it's underwater let's try it again we're pinpointing these areas where we have a deep trough
06:45and if you think about it we just went through the night where it was windy and really cold
06:49and those fish do not want to get up on a shallow sand flat in a foot of water when you have those
06:55types of conditions so they're dipping off those sand flats into those troughs real bite of some
07:00sorts so now we have it pinpointed to a small area now we're really on to something we've proved that
07:07there's life here we're getting bites and now we prove there's better life i don't want to call a
07:11shot but something else i've been seeing a lot of is small black drum really yeah just mix in with
07:17these schools of redfish that's what it is a little black drum honestly if we were looking to keep some
07:22fish to eat sure those smaller black drum like that are probably one of my favorite fish in the
07:26bay to keep and eat great food quality definitely and you know if anytime you're getting a bite from
07:32a black drum the next cast could be a red that's right such a cool little fish one step up from the
07:37whiting you know it's actually you look at them they have so many similarities just their their mouth
07:42shape how they feed the way they look obviously the black drums got a little stripe to them this is
07:49lucky day because i have a bunch of fresh scamp at the house to cook so these guys get to go home
07:55today i want them set up on one of these points where we have not still water but actually moving
08:02water and now that the tide's coming in that water's going to flow across these points in my opinion it
08:07was set up for a perfect ambush spot there we go i don't know what it is about light tackle
08:13feeling a thump setting up and bending a rod good as it gets makes me smile every time well a flounder
08:24and i have not got a flounder bigger black drum
08:29the first two casts in this pocket a flounder and a black drum now i want to see if once we get that
08:35moving water if we'll get some you know more predatory fish like the trout
08:39uh oh and sure enough they showed up in a big way i i assumed we would have caught a couple
08:47oh speckled trout but uh you know to catch decent class of trout here you know it can be kind of
08:53difficult i mean it looks like a match to the last one too been another one when they grab a hold of
09:00something it's usually not going to get away
09:02now that these trout are kind of slowing down on us i think it's time to to make the transition
09:09because i can feel the air warming up i can see that sunshine starting to rise up a little bit
09:15and it's getting bright and for me my excitement for today was being able to get in that tower
09:21and finally see what's on that beach
09:23you know something that me and you have done together a lot is sight fishing these redfish in
09:32the bay and when we're sight fishing them on the flats like you're looking for the individual fish
09:38themselves right this is going to be totally different when we're running the beach we're
09:42looking for massive schools it's almost like an easter egg hunt you know every day i have no idea where
09:47they're going to be and so it's always a relief for me when we're running we're running and then i
09:52finally see that big round shape and it could be a little dirty spot in the water or something but
09:56as we approach that school you can start to see a little separation and when i see that separation
10:02in there i know it's a school of fish now it's just a matter of figuring out what they are what
10:07lure we need to throw i love to start with the top water plug yeah because if it's jack revels or redfish
10:15they're probably going to crush it and it didn't take long when we threw that top water plug across this
10:19school to realize it's all jack crevels and not just any jack crevels nuclear jack nuclear jumbo jacks
10:27all right i got one hooked up yes one at a time no heck no
10:34we talked so much about the explosive bites and how aggressive and how fast they are well that all as
10:39you can imagine once you hook that fish those attributes continue that's it he takes off 100 miles an
10:45hour you better have a reel with a lot of line and a really smooth drag because he's going to test your
10:51drag that's springtime in poundable city beach right there big jack crevels on the beach oh you know
10:59it's hooked yet either that is why i love getting on this beach right there baby hey what you gonna catch on the beach who knows
11:16the way this beach fishing is you can run for miles and miles and see absolutely nothing but when you find
11:23one of those migratory schools of fish whether it's redfish jack crevel black drum whatever it may be
11:29you you pretty much when you find them you find them springtime in poundable city beach right there
11:34big jack crevels on the beach
11:40y'all watch matt's plug right here it just hit the water watch it right here look at pop pop pop pop here
11:45they come here they come there it comes look at a fight number right there and he's hooked up
11:51i love it i love it tell you what people travel all over the world to be able to sight fish giant
11:59strong aggressive fish and we got them right here it's one of our springtime staples right there mr jack crevel
12:08what you don't want to do most forked tail fish their fork tail makes a perfect look at these dolphins
12:18right here their fork tail makes a perfect
12:25let me grab them first
12:31well i was gonna say their fork tail makes a great handle
12:33that tail right there you do not want to grab
12:40all right y'all we're gonna let this guy go wish him the best
12:48ah i'll snatch him out of my hand
12:54get away those dolphins were trying to eat the jack crevels what other species of fish do you know
13:01that are getting chased by a pack of dolphins but they're still willing to bite even though
13:08they were being chased teach these dolphins a trick they ain't seen before my life was big enough for
13:13two jack crevels we'll release them later we'll just keep them temporarily and let the jacks hang out
13:19with us until we get them in a safe area they want them i think they see that plug keep cranking down
13:27i think i see that plug they're kind of scared to grab them with that plug in there
13:31now because the dolphins show up the school swims twice as fast of course so i think it's time to
13:37leave this school of jacks for now and see if we can find another school just trying to get set up where
13:43we don't get too close but we can get a couple shots at them lead the school of fish stay ahead of them
13:49always keep a visual on them so that we can go back to them keep working them very fluid process
13:57i'm not going to lie when we left that school of jacks you're kind of a little worried because
14:02you don't know if you're going to see anything else oh there's more right here matt
14:08different school but i'm looking for that mother load that's what i really love finding
14:13and so to find a second school of fish they were moving slower i thought maybe it's another school
14:19of jacks but i was really thinking it was going to be red fish these don't know about the dolphins yet
14:29and all this is that red fish i think it's maybe black drum dude i think it's a big school of black
14:36drum matt let me get a jig yeah it might put a shrimp on a jig head that's cool
14:40see how they showed zero interest in that plug
14:45doesn't mean i'm not going to try again and when i saw no reaction i was thinking all right
14:50this might be black drum hey that's why you carry a bunch of different rods rigged up for different
14:55stuff all right got one oh you don't even know it's hooked yet either how about that
15:10that is why i love getting on this beach right there baby hey what you gonna catch on the beach
15:16who knows never know to me they're one of the least aggressive fighting fish that's right that's why
15:23we had to make that transition back to a jig head the good thing we're done with up the bad thing
15:29these are giant black drums and we're on the little pole a little undersuited here but it's okay any kind of
15:34natural uh shrimp or crab or something like that or a soft plastic that has a shrimp or a crab smell
15:40to it a lot of times you get him to bite it he's actually barely hooked
15:48but he's look good now look at that jig just fell right out
15:53the big ugly i don't know why people call them that they're beautiful to me
15:57beautiful that is a chunk of fish right there y'all this is a pretty unique situation too because
16:04i feel like it's like a spawning group or something and they're just migrating because a lot of times
16:08they were actually floating up higher in the water column just his natural tendency to be oriented
16:14towards the bottom yeah you went for the full size ones didn't you found another jumbo and once you
16:25get them in while these guys still alive we're gonna release these jacks okay well never fails dang
16:32thought we were in the clear out of thin air the dolphins show up there we go
16:39oh that is a chunk think about that it looks like shrimpy color smells like a shrimp
16:51bait fish profile but it don't matter it look right to him beautiful look at that dude
16:56nice fish i'm gonna get him right back in because i'm hot i'm ready to shed this jacket i think i've
17:01already said that 10 times oh catching big fish like that on the beach is a lot of fun you get to see
17:06them keep them away from the dolphins they're always a challenge it's a really good change of uh
17:11pace from where we started this morning to now kind of cover the whole spectrum good stuff
17:18chasing the sun has been brought to you by minn kota florida water sports get all you need for the
17:28water at fws.fish hummingbirds simply clearly better and by pirates cove marina you enjoy the gulf
17:42we'll take care of the rest
17:47if you've ever visited panama city beach you likely went to shell island it's a beautiful seven mile long
17:54white sand beach with emerald shores believe it or not shell island didn't exist up until about august of
18:031934. if you can imagine the army corps of engineers has been digging for over a year
18:12to cut this new pass in a peninsula that's called lands end
18:17and when they do get the new pass cut it'll be safer and better for everybody and shell island will
18:25have been worn shell island is a jewel of the panama city beach area because it's untouched you take a
18:32boat through this pass if you take a right there's civilization as far as the eye can see but if you
18:38take a left you just have untouched beauty for miles and miles and miles the way it always was beautiful
18:56you're basically six foot off the water if you're standing on the deck of the boat
19:00i may be 10 or 12 feet off the water in the tower you go 50 feet looking straight down it's a whole
19:09different world
19:14watching those dolphins work that school of fish uh and knowing how intelligent they are
19:21you always uh want to take take the opportunity to learn you can learn something uh every day on
19:27the water from these types of situations there's a lot going on below the surface and it's really
19:32neat to be above the water have that visibility and sun overhead and just kind of watch all of that
19:37unfold and and uh like say there's always something to take away do you think the dolphins were basically
19:44pushing those fish purposely to maybe try to wear them down and make them easier to catch or do you
19:49think the jack revels were just trying to get away and the dolphins were just speeding up to try to keep
19:54pace with them i think it's some of both i think it i think it's constantly changing and i think a
19:58dolphin is intelligent enough he's going to change his approach and i guarantee he can out swim those
20:03as far as um stamina was i would think
20:16well this turned into a day for the jacks this was the last one that was in the live well and now
20:22that the dolphins aren't around we're letting them go well it was supposed to be a day of redfish
20:28but you know what i think we caught everything but a redfish we did some days are that way and just
20:32take what they have to offer and today we had a lot to offer that's right i'd do the species in the
20:37school get the proper lure on them and hang on
