Faith is not a uniform, and one of the greatest misunderstandings about Christianity is believing it’s about how you look instead of who you are.
Across history, people have turned faith into an image problem — judging, excluding, and labeling others based on outward appearance. But the message of Jesus dismantles that idea completely.
This video explores why faith has nothing to do with clothing, style, or fitting a religious mold. God is not searching for perfection. He is searching for sincerity. What matters to Him is the heart you carry and the words you speak into the lives of others.
This is a reflective, encouraging message for anyone who feels disconnected from church culture but still longs for truth, purpose, and hope.
Faith isn’t worn.
It’s lived.
Let this message challenge assumptions and invite you back to what faith was always meant to be.

00:00You know, I think it's interesting that we live in a world that seems to judge and has expectations of position based upon the clothing that you're wearing.
00:12I think that's really weird.
00:14When you look at me and I'm limping down the street with a lazy eye, a bald head, I'm obviously handicapped.
00:20What do you see?
00:22I have an Ivy League MBA.
00:25I'm a successful businessman.
00:28You wouldn't see that.
00:29You'd think I was homeless because I'm probably wearing shorts.
00:33It's 30 below zero out and I've got a Marilyn Manson shirt on and short sleeve shirt in the winter.
00:39But I live in Colorado and I just don't get cold like other people.
00:44But who does God choose?
00:47Who does God give a platform that 600,000 subscribers follow and millions of people listen to every day?
00:55Does he give it to the guy with the fancy suit and the slick hair or is God evolving with our society and living in 2026 and picking real people to represent his message?
01:12I think that's absolutely true.
01:14I think that's absolutely true and I think that's where we're at.
01:17You know, but we do also live in this world.
01:20I get comments all the time on videos.
01:24That guy's talking about God's archangels and he's wearing a Megadeth shirt.
01:29Do you think God cares what shirt I'm wearing?
01:33I think he's looking at my heart.
01:35I think he's listening to my words and making sure I'm representing him appropriately and in the way that he has asked me to.
01:44But people see the outside first.
01:47They always do.
01:49Before they hear a single word you say.
01:52Before they know your story at all.
01:55Before they understand your heart.
01:57They notice the surface.
02:00And that's a problem.
02:02Because people judge based on clothes, style, or their perceived vibe.
02:10You know, the things that make quick impressions in a world that moves fast and seems to judge faster.
02:19I don't judge any of you.
02:21When I'm out in public, I see the person.
02:24I judge people based on the context of their character.
02:28By the words that come out of their mouth.
02:32You see, sometimes the surface doesn't fit the neat religious picture that people expect.
02:40Surprise!
02:41Doug Vandergraaf.
02:43Marilyn Manson shirt.
02:44I went with my daughter, my 16-year-old daughter, to a Marilyn Manson concert.
02:49Guess what?
02:50We had a beautiful time.
02:52Before the concert, we went out and had a very nice dinner.
02:55We talked to each other.
02:56She's 16, but she's also in her third year of college.
03:01She dresses goth.
03:02If you looked at her, you would think she was just some high school kid.
03:07But you know what?
03:07She's advanced.
03:08She's achieved.
03:11And I love her, regardless of what she wears.
03:15I'm just asking you to love me, regardless of what I wear.
03:19I'm not here for self-expression or for your money, like all the other religious people seem to be.
03:28I'm just here to share the Word of God.
03:30Why does it matter what t-shirt I have on?
03:34Sometimes it's Van Halen, Panama.
03:37Yeah, I love that band.
03:38I think most people do.
03:40Sometimes it's Prince.
03:41Sometimes it's Pink Floyd.
03:43Sometimes it's Jimi Hendrix.
03:45But I constantly get comments.
03:48You know, because sometimes it is a classic band t-shirt.
03:52Sometimes it's heavy metal.
03:54And sometimes it's rock and roll.
03:57And for some people, that creates a moment of confusion, I guess.
04:03Because we've been trained in our society by the media and by the sheep that we follow as sheep.
04:10Often without realizing it, we associate faith with a certain look.
04:18I think, you know, because you go to church, you see the priest wearing a certain uniform or a robe.
04:25You know, we expect a certain outward presentation that feels safe and familiar.
04:31Well, God gave me this platform to be safe and to be familiar, but also to speak the truth, regardless of whether it feels safe or familiar.
04:44Because that's who Jesus was.
04:46You see, from the very beginning, God has been dismantling the idea that holiness is something you wear.
04:54You know, we see somebody wearing the cross.
04:56We automatically assume they're a good person.
04:58You know, they do all these wonderful things.
05:00They've saved the world in multiple ways.
05:03It's just not true.
05:06And God has always been far more concerned with who you are when no one is watching than with what you look like when everyone is.
05:17You know, Scripture tells us that man looks at the outward appearance.
05:22So we know that's part of God's truth.
05:25But the Lord, we also know that he looks at our hearts.
05:31That isn't a poetic suggestion.
05:34It's a spiritual reality.
05:37And it cuts straight through every assumption we make about what faith is supposed to look like.
05:43I ask you a question.
05:46My daughter and I love to go thrift shopping.
05:49Because it's a great place to find deals.
05:52No matter how much money you have, it's okay to find a deal.
05:56It's a great place to find classic band t-shirts.
06:01Vintage shirts that are awesome that I wear on this channel every single day.
06:06I do a video every day.
06:08If you go back and look at all the videos.
06:10When I first started this channel, my daughter, I spoke about business.
06:14I was an atheist.
06:15I didn't speak about the Lord.
06:18And you'll notice every single shirt I wore was a different tie t-shirt.
06:24My kids told me, Dad, if you're going to talk about business and success on YouTube, you have to wear a tie.
06:31I said, okay.
06:33So I went out on Amazon.
06:35And I bought every single t-shirt you could possibly buy in every single color.
06:40And it was just a regular t-shirt with a tie on it.
06:44And I just wanted to prove to them that anybody could be successful on YouTube if they just showed up every day.
06:53I didn't think it mattered what I wear.
06:55I still don't think it matters what I wear.
06:58I just wanted to prove a point.
07:02The way I was dressed had no context into how I was trying to show my children
07:09that not giving up is the one thing, if it's the only lesson you ever learn,
07:17not giving up is one of the most important.
07:22So I didn't give up.
07:23I kept showing up.
07:24But things evolved.
07:26God evolved me.
07:27He came knocking at my door.
07:29Introduced himself to me.
07:31And my life has never been the same since.
07:35But God also gave me permission to be me.
07:40And, you know, one time I showed up and did a video after I'd had a business call.
07:44And I was wearing a white t-shirt with a collar.
07:47And I went and sat on the couch after the call.
07:50And I said, I'm going to do my video here in a minute.
07:52And my daughter said, what shirt are you going to wear today?
07:56And I said, well, this one.
07:57She said, no, that's not our dad.
08:01Our dad wears shorts and band t-shirts every day.
08:05You need to go on camera and be our dad.
08:09They're right.
08:10I need to be me.
08:12You need to be you.
08:14Don't let people judge you into spending additional money
08:19so you can have a horse on your t-shirt rather than an alligator or whatever else.
08:25Nobody cares about brands anymore.
08:27I think in 2026, we're evolving beyond this.
08:32But some people obviously are not.
08:34I look at the comments in my videos.
08:36And I get a lot of thank yous, Doug.
08:39And that really made sense.
08:41And I appreciate the time you took today to put this out there.
08:44It really helped me.
08:46But I also get some hurtful ones where it's like,
08:49why are you wearing that t-shirt?
08:51You don't represent God.
08:52You're Satan.
08:53And they call me all these names.
08:55Because of my t-shirt,
08:57they overlook the fact of the hours I spend
09:02representing the Lord in this world.
09:05Did you know, from a digital standpoint,
09:08me, this guy in the Marilyn Manson t-shirt,
09:11I've written more independent commentary at the chapter level
09:17for the New Testament of the Holy Bible
09:20than anybody who's ever walked planet Earth.
09:23That seems crazy, but it's absolutely true.
09:26For every chapter of the New Testament of the Holy Bible,
09:29I have written eight separate 5,000 word plus commentaries
09:34from different perspectives to ensure everybody has an opportunity
09:37to understand the word of God.
09:40You wouldn't think that, though.
09:43It's true.
09:44Google your friend, Douglas Vandergraaf.
09:47It'll pull up 2,080 articles that I have written over the past three years.
09:53But you wouldn't think that when I'm limping down the street.
09:57You know, you look at me and say,
09:58oh, look at that guy.
09:59He's just one of those guys.
10:01He probably does drugs and all these other things.
10:03Because I'm usually wearing a heavy metal t-shirt.
10:07I'm usually just wearing shorts.
10:10And I don't wear name brand shoes.
10:12I just wear regular shoes.
10:13I'm not trying to look special.
10:16But you know what?
10:18In God's eyes, I am trying to be special.
10:22In my children's eyes, in my wife's eyes,
10:26I'm trying to be special.
10:28Why am I doing this video?
10:30Because I want people to understand
10:33it doesn't matter what you're wearing.
10:35It's who you are.
10:36And don't listen to the opinions of others.
10:39Because opinions are like farts.
10:40They're in the air for a second.
10:42And then they're gone.
10:43Sorry I said that.
10:45But, I mean, you know,
10:48faith is not fabric.
10:53Faith is not a logo.
10:54And faith is not a performance.
10:58Faith is what lives inside of you.
11:00It's what lives inside of me.
11:02It's what shapes your words.
11:05It's what called me this morning
11:06when I woke up to write this down
11:08and come out and talk about it.
11:11It's my faith.
11:13It's what guides your response
11:14when someone is hurting.
11:17And it's what comes out of you
11:20under pressure.
11:22You know, a few days ago,
11:23we had somebody who was making
11:25suicidal comments
11:27on one of my videos
11:30when I helped them
11:32and shared with them
11:33the word of God
11:34and gave them words of calm
11:36and presence
11:37and kindness.
11:39they didn't say,
11:41they said,
11:43thank you.
11:44Thank you for helping me, Doug.
11:45They didn't say,
11:46you know, I could have been helped
11:47but your t-shirt
11:49just totally made it
11:50so that
11:50I'm just, you know,
11:52not going to accept
11:53any of your kind words
11:54or anything.
11:55Stop being so shallow.
11:59Be yourself.
12:01Don't change
12:02because other people
12:03are expecting you
12:04to look a certain way.
12:05You want to wear pajamas today?
12:07Put on your pajamas
12:08or leave them on.
12:10Do what makes you happy
12:12in this world
12:13and stop trying to live
12:14based upon,
12:16you know,
12:16people judge,
12:17gauge themselves
12:18based upon a short snippet
12:20they see on a social media channel.
12:22I look at those sometimes
12:24and I'm like,
12:24that's not your car.
12:26That's not your house.
12:27That's not your car.
12:29I'm not stupid.
12:30I mean,
12:30you look at all the rest
12:31of their posts.
12:32Hey, here's you
12:33and with your
12:34regular people car
12:35which is perfectly fine.
12:37Why do you feel the need
12:38to post yourself
12:39upward
12:40when
12:41and that
12:42just be happy
12:43with being who you are?
12:44And you know,
12:45Jesus never asked anyone
12:47to dress the part.
12:49He never stopped
12:50a fisherman
12:51and said,
12:52come back
12:52when you look
12:53more spiritual
12:54or when you've got
12:55a fancy suit on.
12:57He never told
12:58the tax collector
12:59to clean up
13:00his image first.
13:01He went to their house.
13:03He sat down
13:04at their table.
13:06He talked with them.
13:08He helped them.
13:10And they didn't say,
13:11I don't like the look
13:12of your robe.
13:12And he didn't say,
13:14hey,
13:14I don't like your
13:15fancy silk and clothes.
13:16But he never demanded
13:19that broken people
13:21hide their scars
13:22before approaching him.
13:25You see,
13:26he met people
13:27exactly where they were.
13:29In their work clothes.
13:31In their mess.
13:33In their doubt
13:34and in their shame.
13:35And he spoke life.
13:38Now keep that in mind.
13:40That's important.
13:41Because people today
13:43are walking around
13:44carrying heavy things.
13:46Regret.
13:48Fear.
13:49Loneliness.
13:50Questions they're afraid
13:52to ask out loud.
13:54And many of them
13:55already feel disqualified
13:57from God
13:58before they even
13:58open their mouth
13:59because of the way
14:01other people
14:02make them feel.
14:04They think,
14:05if I don't look the part,
14:08I don't belong.
14:09That's a bunch of crap.
14:12You belong.
14:14They think,
14:15if my past is messy,
14:17God won't want me.
14:19That's a bunch of crap.
14:21God wants you.
14:24They think,
14:25if I don't fit the mold,
14:27I'm on the outside.
14:29No,
14:30you're welcome in.
14:31The door is open.
14:32100%
14:33you are welcome.
14:36And then they encounter
14:36someone who doesn't
14:38fit the stereotype
14:39either.
14:40Somebody like me.
14:42Somebody who looks
14:43ordinary,
14:44human,
14:44and real,
14:46but primarily speaks
14:48with grace,
14:49kindness,
14:50and truth.
14:51And suddenly,
14:53something shifts.
14:55Because the message
14:56becomes accessible.
14:58Because God
14:59no longer feels distant.
15:02Because faith
15:03stops feeling
15:03like a club
15:05and starts feeling
15:07like an invitation.
15:09It is an invitation.
15:12You are welcome here.
15:15You're welcome
15:16anywhere God is present.
15:18And that's
15:18100% true.
15:21What matters
15:22is not what's printed
15:24on your t-shirt.
15:25What matters
15:27is what's written
15:28on your heart.
15:30What matters
15:32is whether
15:32your words
15:33heal
15:34or harm.
15:36Whether your
15:37presence
15:37calms
15:38or condemns.
15:41Whether you
15:42listen more
15:43than you
15:44lecture.
15:45You don't point
15:46people to God
15:47with an image.
15:49You point
15:50people to God
15:51with love.
15:54You do it
15:55when you show
15:56patience
15:57in a world
15:58addicted
15:58to outrage.
16:00You do it
16:01when you speak
16:02hope
16:03in a moment
16:04that feels
16:05hopeless.
16:06You do it
16:07when you choose
16:08humility
16:09instead of ego.
16:12Some of the
16:13most powerful
16:14moments of
16:15ministry
16:15don't happen
16:17on stages
16:18or in
16:19churches.
16:21They happen
16:22in quiet
16:22conversations,
16:24in comments,
16:26in messages,
16:28in unexpected
16:30moments
16:31where someone
16:32opens up
16:33because they
16:35feel safe.
16:36And that's
16:37what we've
16:38created here
16:38on this channel
16:39is a place
16:41where people
16:42feel safe.
16:43Look at the
16:44comments.
16:45The majority
16:46of them
16:47are beautiful.
16:49But a few
16:50need to
16:51look inside
16:52and understand
16:53that your
16:54words are
16:55hurtful.
16:56they are
16:56not
16:57helpful.
16:59You know,
16:59I'm not a
17:00piece of
17:00steel.
17:01You know,
17:01you can't
17:01just come
17:02on here
17:02and leave
17:03comments
17:04and beat
17:05me up.
17:05It hurts
17:06my feelings.
17:07I spend
17:08a lot of
17:08time and
17:09effort to
17:10come here
17:11and share
17:11every single
17:12day.
17:13And people
17:14come and
17:14say hateful
17:15things to
17:16me.
17:16That doesn't
17:18seem fair.
17:19You might
17:19say,
17:20hey Doug,
17:20you just
17:20need to
17:21have tougher
17:21skin.
17:22Really?
17:23Do I
17:24need to
17:24change?
17:26Or do
17:26they?
17:28And, you
17:29know, safety
17:30doesn't come
17:31from looking
17:32religious.
17:33It comes
17:33from being
17:35a genuine
17:35human being.
17:36And I
17:36come on
17:37here, it's
17:37a no BS
17:38thing.
17:39I'm
17:39myself every
17:40single day.
17:41And I'm
17:41not changing
17:42my message
17:43for anyone.
17:45I come
17:45here and do
17:46what I want
17:46to do each
17:47day because
17:47it's what I'm
17:48inspired to
17:49do by the
17:50Lord.
17:51And, you
17:52know, Jesus
17:52was authentic
17:53and he was
17:54direct, so I
17:55feel like I
17:55can be too.
17:57But he was
17:58also compassionate
17:59and so am
18:00I.
18:01And I
18:02believe you
18:02are too.
18:04You know,
18:05Jesus didn't
18:06dilute truth,
18:07but he
18:08never weaponized
18:09it either.
18:10He knew
18:11that people
18:12don't change
18:13because they're
18:13pressured.
18:15They change
18:16because they're
18:18loved.
18:18and I
18:20want every
18:20single person
18:21that said
18:22something mean
18:23to me or
18:23made a
18:24negative comment
18:25about my
18:26clothing,
18:27I love
18:29you and
18:29you're still
18:30welcome here.
18:31I respond
18:32to your
18:32comments.
18:33I don't
18:34block you
18:34and you're
18:35not hidden
18:36from this
18:36channel.
18:37You can
18:38always come
18:39back and
18:40you're always
18:40welcome.
18:42You know,
18:42that's what
18:43we are called
18:44to carry,
18:45I believe.
18:46So, you
18:47know, yes,
18:48the t-shirts
18:49might be
18:49classic rock.
18:51They might
18:51be heavy metal
18:52some days.
18:54And some
18:55days,
18:56they might
18:56surprise
18:57someone.
18:59But God
18:59is not
19:00limited
19:01by surprise.
19:03If anything,
19:05he often
19:05uses it.
19:07Because when
19:08expectations are
19:09broken,
19:11hearts open.
19:12and when
19:13people realize
19:14that faith
19:15doesn't require
19:15them to
19:16become someone
19:17else or
19:18be someone
19:19else,
19:20they start
19:21wondering if
19:22God might
19:23actually want
19:23them as
19:25they are.
19:26And he
19:27does.
19:28Exactly as
19:29you are.
19:29Don't change
19:30a thing.
19:32And that's
19:33where real
19:34transformation
19:34begins anyway.
19:36You don't
19:37need to wear
19:38your faith.
19:38You need
19:40to live
19:40it.
19:41You don't
19:42need to
19:42advertise
19:43it.
19:44You need
19:45to embody
19:46it.
19:47You don't
19:48need to
19:48look holy.
19:50You need
19:50to love
19:51deeply.
19:53Show up
19:54honestly.
19:55Speak
19:55carefully.
19:57Listen
19:58fully and
19:59love
19:59boldly.
20:00let your
20:03words carry
20:04grace.
20:06Let your
20:06actions
20:07carry
20:08integrity.
20:09Let your
20:10life quietly
20:11point to
20:12something
20:13eternal.
20:14Because at
20:15the end
20:15of the
20:16day,
20:17no one's
20:18life is
20:18changed
20:19by a
20:20logo.
20:21Lives
20:22are changed
20:23by truth
20:23spoken in
20:25love
20:25by someone
20:27who actually
20:28cares.
20:29and you
20:30know what?
20:31I actually
20:32care about
20:34you.
20:35Regardless
20:35of the
20:36clothing you're
20:36wearing.
20:37Regardless
20:38of your
20:39temperament
20:39towards me.
20:41You can't
20:41change that.
20:43You're welcome
20:43here.
20:44And you're
20:45always going
20:46to be.
20:47That's what
20:48matters.
20:51It's the
20:52truth,
20:52my friends.
20:54May God
20:55bless you.
20:56Come back
20:57tomorrow and
20:58see which
20:59t-shirt I'm
21:00wearing.
21:01I guarantee
21:01you.
21:03It's probably
21:04going to be
21:04pretty similar
21:05to the one
21:06I'm wearing
21:06today.
21:07I'm not
21:08going to
21:08change.
21:09God knew
21:09who I was
21:10when he
21:11called me
21:11to this
21:12calling.
21:13When he
21:13gave me
21:14this purpose.
21:15He knew.
21:17He knew
21:17who I was.
21:19He saw
21:19my clothing
21:20and guess
21:21what?
21:22He called
21:22me anyway.
21:25God bless
21:26you my
21:26friends.
21:29Bye bye.
