North Shields is being entered into the national competition, with the winning town set to receive £3 million to deliver a year-long programme celebrating its identity.
North Tyneside's deputy mayor said the town had a "compelling story to tell," pointing to its recent 800th anniversary and its established cultural quarter as proving a 'strong foundation'.
