00:00They say it's not the flaw that kills her. What is it that?
00:07Charlie Sheen is facing controversy again. The actor says he was well aware there was going to be
00:12backlash to his latest film, 9-11, but he couldn't pass on the opportunity to be a part of the drama
00:17with other actors for which he has such profound respect. The film about the September 11, 2001
00:23terrorist attack stars Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, Gina Gershon, Louise Guzman, and Jacqueline Bessette,
00:30it revolves around a group of strangers trapped on an elevator as the attacks unfold. In an
00:34interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sheen opened up about why he was interested in the role
00:39and addressed the conspiracy-minded false comments he made during a 2006 radio interview
00:44with conservative commentator Alex Jones about possible controlled demolition causing the
00:50massive destruction of the Twin Towers. Sheen told THR's Ryan Parker,
00:59The film has nothing to do with who was behind the destruction, and Sheen said he did not want that
01:16to be a part of the picture. I saw it as an opportunity to do something dramatic, something
01:21I had not done in a long time. He continued,
01:24It is still a time when we really came together as a country, as a people, and I think given where
01:29we are at right now, maybe it is a nice reminder, in spite of what led us there, to be more unified,
01:34be more united. At this point in his life and career, Sheen says he has developed thick skin,
01:39but even still, the backlash from the announcement of 9-11 and then from the trailer seems excessive
01:44to the actor. Sheen said,
01:46I don't recall such a pre-critical backlash to United 93 or World Trade Center.
01:50Maybe there is the combination of those who are always going to gun for me,
01:54and those who are always going to root for me. I'll stick with the rooters.
01:57Despite the backlash, director Martin Gigi says he always had Sheen in mind for the lead role of
02:02Jeffrey Cage, a high-powered Wall Street type. The director says he wasn't concerned that Sheen
02:08had previously expressed his disbelief that the collapse of the iconic buildings was a product
02:12of a terrorist attack. Gigi told THR's Mia Galupo,
02:15He made it clear to me that there's a time for everything and that presently his thoughts
02:19and feelings about 9-11 are that it was a horrible tragedy. More than anything, he wanted to make
02:24the movie because he thought this was a legacy piece, something that he would love to be
02:28remembered by. For the full interviews with both Sheen and Gigi, check out THR.com.
02:32For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Tiffany Taylor.
