With news that the government is looking to ban social media for anyone under the age of 16, we take to the streets of the North East to ask people if they would support a ban, or if they feel there’s another way to ensure the online safety of young people.

00:00It's like most things, the initial intention was good, it's now just out of control and
00:09the influence on younger people is enormous, isn't it really? And they do need a lot more
00:15guidance and that's where you've got to be very, very careful with social media.
00:20I think obviously it's wise to have policies in place to protect young people on social
00:25media, especially young teenagers who could be a bit more vulnerable or susceptible to
00:30bullying online or false information. But I think a total ban probably isn't the best
00:36way to go around that. I think there needs to be more stringent restrictions.
00:41I think it's a positive thing if used in the right way. I think there should be measures
00:45in place to see what certainly under-16s can see on there. I think used in the right way
00:51it can be positive, but again it's always a bit of a concern as a parent what your kids
00:57can see on there, which is a bit of a worry.
