Australia has become the first country in the world to ban social media for children under 16, blocking access to platforms including TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. Under the new law, platforms face fines of up to A$49.5 million if they fail to comply. While the move has been welcomed by many parents and child advocates, technology companies and free speech groups have criticized the restrictions. Several countries are now watching closely, considering whether to adopt similar measures.

00:32the the the my hair's naturally curly i love me going down
00:38we'd always regulated media in the in the public interest and i think what the government's trying
00:58to do is to return some of the public interest that's a good thing because as i say there have
01:05been harms it's come internationally it's come from other places i think looking at questions around
01:12social media from an australian perspective is a really good idea i don't think bans tend to work
01:19when it's a blanket decision it doesn't take into account the nuance and the variables and people's
01:26individual situations and frankly people tend to find a way around bans if they really want to
01:32uh so i don't think it's going to achieve what it's being it's set out to achieve

02:01I think it cuts kids off from the community more than forcing them back out in real life.
02:17I think it just cuts them off from support as well that they could be accessing.
02:22They are now going to have to get their news only from traditional media which has a particular
02:26bias that might be different from what they find online.
02:29So in general I don't think this is a good thing.
02:32People are going to find a way around most things.
02:36I think people who want to will find a way around it.
02:40I think the government has to do something and I think if it's successful in Australia,
02:46which I think it probably will be, the rest of the world will probably follow, a bit like
02:51plain cigarette packaging on tobacco products.
02:54That was a successful outcome for Australia and I think lots of other countries followed
02:58on from that.
