00:00Got love one and only!
00:10New boards.
00:13Whoa.
00:14They are not kidding.
00:15What are you looking at?
00:16It's Mike and Stephanie's place.
00:17We're looking at their house tomorrow.
00:19That looks like a doctor's office.
00:20Yeah.
00:21Everything's just blank.
00:22Oh, man.
00:23The patient's in need of massive resuscitation.
00:25This is the problem.
00:26They're a big blended family with four teenagers
00:29who just went through a big move.
00:31New stepparents, new siblings, new house.
00:33We need to help them out and just make this home
00:35feel like a safe haven in all that chaos.
00:37What's that saying?
00:38Home's not a place, it's a feeling.
00:40And it would be hard to have a good feeling
00:41in something that just feels cold and inviting.
00:48This is my nightmare.
00:49It's really frustrating.
00:50Oh!
00:51This is not good.
00:52What?
00:53I'm stressed.
00:54You're not alone.
00:55This all has to be ripped out.
00:57I kind of feel like throwing up.
00:59And rebuilt.
01:00I don't want to finish a beautiful house
01:03and then they aren't happy.
01:04No pressure.
01:05My hope is that they will see this house
01:07as everything they've dreamed of.
01:08I love the house now.
01:10Before it was a love-hate.
01:19Stephanie and Mike finally found a house
01:21that was big enough to fit their whole blended family
01:23of six, but they had to compromise on function and style.
01:26It's bland, sterile, and their kids
01:28just don't feel at home there.
01:29We need to help them transform it into a place
01:31that makes the whole family happy
01:33because right now, no one is feeling the love.
01:35Hey guys, welcome to see you.
01:36Good to see you.
01:37Yeah.
01:38Wow.
01:39These are some big white walls.
01:40Yeah.
01:41What led us to this house was the space.
01:43We have four kids and the four dogs.
01:44Oh, wow.
01:45Stephanie's twins, Sophia and Sienna.
01:47My daughter, Kayla.
01:48They're all in the same grade, all 15.
01:50And my boy, Dylan, is 17.
01:51Wow.
01:52Is this why you shave,
01:53so we don't see all the grays?
01:54Exactly.
01:55It's a combination of lost and gray hair.
01:57Wow, that's a busy household.
01:59Yeah.
02:00And how long have you been here?
02:01It'll be three years soon.
02:03We loved our last house,
02:05but it just felt a little tight.
02:07This house has six bedrooms.
02:09It felt like it suited us,
02:10at least structurally.
02:12But it's just not the reflection of our family.
02:15Yeah.
02:16What year was the house built?
02:17We think 1991.
02:181991.
02:19Yeah.
02:20Or at least that wasn't when a serious remodel was done,
02:21if it was, yeah.
02:22It feels very 1990s,
02:23because houses from the 90s were just big white boxes.
02:27Yeah.
02:28I'm just having a blended family.
02:29Our kids come and they go,
02:31and I feel like I really wanted to establish
02:33that this is their home.
02:35This is where they belong.
02:36This is a reflection of who they are.
02:38And even though we have four kids between the two of us,
02:41we're both very, very much intrigued in fostering a child.
02:44Oh, wow.
02:45That's awesome.
02:46Have you ever fostered before?
02:47Have not.
02:48Our previous home, we had it all done.
02:49We were inspected and, you know,
02:50approved for safety measures and all those things.
02:52We need to do some of that here still as well.
02:54Yeah.
02:55I think we have a good thing going.
02:56Yeah.
02:57So I think we want to share it with someone.
02:58Yeah.
02:59Moving our whole brood, plus the four dogs,
03:02the process of blending families, wanting to foster.
03:06It's a lot.
03:07We need help at this point with this home,
03:09but how do we make a space that feels like a home for everyone?
03:13I mean, for the kitchen, some of the stuff we want to keep the character,
03:16other stuff just has to go.
03:17All right, let's go.
03:18So let's go.
03:19The dining room looks nice.
03:20A bit moody in here.
03:21Yeah.
03:22Oh, and then you see the kitchen.
03:23Yes.
03:24Yes.
03:25Gold and green.
03:26So there is like a stylish touch and then you come in here and it feels extremely nice.
03:30Right?
03:31I know.
03:32The funny thing actually is, this is an expensive kitchen.
03:35Yeah.
03:36When this went in, this was very expensive, but it is really dated.
03:40Yeah.
03:41This ornate detail in the tile, the 10 recessed lights above the table,
03:45half of them I don't even know how to access them.
03:47And then these countertops.
03:49I mean, I think there are a few cracks throughout.
03:51I love to cook and have the whole family sit around the table every night that we're all
03:55together.
03:56And I honestly am not cooking as much.
03:58I think I cook 80% less than I used to.
04:01You would charge into the kitchen at the old home and here you retreat from here.
04:04You don't like to be in here.
04:05You don't have to be.
04:06You got four teenagers in the house.
04:07They're wanting some good home cooked meals.
04:09Yeah, for sure.
04:10It's really frustrating because the quality of the cabinetry is great.
04:14So I've had a really hard time thinking, should I keep them?
04:17Should we get new cabinets?
04:18If you're willing to keep the cabinets, the boxes are probably totally fine because the
04:23layout is pretty darn good.
04:25We would either switch out all the doors and do new custom doors.
04:28Oh, interesting.
04:29Or we sand all these down, keeping these cabinets and these doors and just repainting.
04:35I wouldn't mind saving them and just giving a refresh with paint.
04:38Wherever we could save money would be great because we have four kids to put through college.
04:41These are in really good shape.
04:42Yeah.
04:43We're big fans of that.
04:44Yeah.
04:45I mean, if we're talking about frustrations, the bathroom I think I hate maybe even more.
04:49It's like my least favorite room.
04:50If we're time warping from the 90s into here, we're probably going to at least the 80s in the bathroom.
04:55Oh, right.
04:56Yes.
04:57This is your bathroom?
04:58Yeah.
04:59Correct.
05:00Okay.
05:01Okay.
05:02Follow us.
05:03This is our bedroom.
05:04The bedroom?
05:05I mean, in our last house, our bedroom was upstairs and the foster child's room would have been downstairs and that just didn't feel right.
05:12Here, our bedroom is downstairs and the foster child's room and bathroom would also be downstairs.
05:17Yeah.
05:18I think it's pretty amazing that you have this beautiful family, yet you know you have so much more love to give.
05:22And to be able to bring that to somebody else who maybe doesn't have that or thinks they'll never have that, that's pretty amazing.
05:27Yeah.
05:28I kind of had a tough childhood, I guess you could say, and I spent one summer in Michigan with my aunt.
05:33She just was so full of love.
05:35It left such an impression on me and I want to be another child's experience like I had.
05:42What a family looks like, feels like, yeah.
05:44Yeah.
05:45You went for a house that has exactly what you need to grow into, especially if you're fostering.
05:48Right.
05:49Now we can help you realize the home's full potential.
05:51Yeah, and we're not sure why that hallway's there.
05:54Pointless hallway.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Yeah, it's a little strange.
05:58Oh, wow.
05:59Yeah.
06:00This is a galley-style bathroom.
06:02Yeah.
06:03This bathroom just doesn't work for us, right?
06:04I mean, there's a leak underneath the shower that we've always been worried about that we were told about when we bought it.
06:08Wait, do you deal with this every single day when you shower?
06:12Yeah.
06:13Okay, well, I can tell you why that happened.
06:15So, there is a leak.
06:17Moisture's getting into the framing underneath the stone and it's heaving the stone up.
06:21Got it.
06:22And it's causing it to...
06:23Yeah.
06:24I'm noticing a lot of humidity or moisture damage.
06:27Yeah.
06:28See the little yellow drops?
06:29This is showing you do not have good air circulation in here.
06:31Yeah.
06:32Yeah.
06:33It just also feels unnecessarily condensed because we don't know what this hallway on the other side of this wall is.
06:37No, that hallway should be your space in here.
06:40Yeah.
06:41Yes.
06:42If it works with tearing the wall out, I think I'd rather have a big bathroom.
06:45Yeah.
06:46Because that would make this feel twice as wide.
06:48So, we are actually going to get to tear a wall out, which is exciting.
06:52Yay.
06:53Expand this.
06:54A thousand percent.
06:55Yeah.
06:56So, there's a kitchen, bathroom.
06:57Those are the two major ones so far.
06:58Yeah.
06:59Any other spaces?
07:00Just the kids' bedrooms just to have them feel like this is really home.
07:03Yeah, that was a big part of what you like.
07:04Put some personality in there.
07:05Sure.
07:06Let's do it.
07:07Head upstairs.
07:10So, it's four bedrooms up here.
07:11Yeah.
07:12All four kids' bedrooms are on the second floor.
07:14My twins, Sophie and Sienna are at one end of the hall, and Kayla and Dylan are on the other side.
07:19So, this is our son Dylan's bedroom.
07:21Whoa!
07:22Yeah.
07:23It's huge.
07:24Are they all this size or does he just get the sweet roots?
07:25He lucked out as the lone boy.
07:26Yeah.
07:27He's the only boy.
07:28Plus, he is the oldest.
07:29Layout's good.
07:30It's just like a big white box.
07:31Yeah.
07:32So, is that what you're looking for?
07:33A little personality?
07:34Yeah, definitely.
07:35A little bit of time coming into this house.
07:37Just the kids were resistant to the process, but where are we going to go?
07:41Being that the kids are all set in their different schools, moving just isn't really in the cards.
07:45No.
07:46There's no such thing as another six bedroom house in Burbank, I think.
07:49This is a pretty big move.
07:50Yeah.
07:51Move all four kids into a house that you're hoping would work for them, and then here you are three years later, it's still not working.
07:55It's going to be frustrating.
07:56Yeah, and I feel like I'm at my end of dealing with the house the way that it is now.
08:00I've reached my point of maximum frustration, and I'm ready for a change.
08:05I honestly think with the amount of rooms we have to do, even though we're not doing a ton of structural, you're still looking at around $120,000.
08:12Yeah, that's where our budget is exactly.
08:14Yeah.
08:15If you guys are willing to jump in and help with demolition too, I think that would be great.
08:18I'm ready to jump.
08:19I think our kids are willing to help with that too.
08:21The one house we go into that doesn't need a ton of demolition.
08:24We've got all the support you need.
08:25Yeah, exactly.
08:2614-8.
08:27You can use them on the next house.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Because we're a blended family, there's so much that we do that is very intentional to make sure that the kids feel safe and secure in this home and like this is their home.
08:38So no, no more of this.
08:40And I want them to be happy.
08:42Like I truly feel making the kids' rooms their own is part of that blending process to have us feeling like a family.
08:51Yeah.
08:52Stephanie and Mike's main priority with this renovation was to make sure that every member of their blended family feels secure and right at home, including the new foster child they're planning for in the near future.
09:08Well, it's going to take about $120,000 to refresh this home and bring in a little bit of style and some personality, oh, and function.
09:14Most of the budget will go towards upgrading their dated galley-style kitchen and their dysfunctional main suite bathroom and overhauling all four kids' rooms to make it hopefully feel more like home.
09:23We need to be smart about this budget and save anywhere we can because they've got four teenagers to put through college and another foster child on the way.
09:32Well, it's going to be tricky because there are a lot of rooms and a lot of teenagers to please.
09:36I wish because we have so many extra hands, so many people to help with them.
09:42I wish we were actually demolishing more than we are.
09:45But the cabinets are actually not that bad as far as the shape and the style.
09:49The color's ugly.
09:52Wait, how does that go again?
09:54Ugly.
09:55Ugly.
09:56It's very...
09:57Don't put any holes in these cabinets.
09:59I'll try.
10:00We're going to actually take the doors off carefully.
10:02That way we can sand them down.
10:04We're changing the color out, changing the stone, the backsplash, all of that stuff.
10:08Awesome.
10:09All right, why don't we divide and conquer?
10:10You guys want to hop into the bathroom, start pulling drawers, cabinets, gloves, glasses, everybody?
10:15All right.
10:16Good luck.
10:17Let's gingerly tear this place apart.
10:19Hashtag demo.
10:21Hashtag property.
10:23Hashtag property.
10:25We did it.
10:27I'm nervous just because I just feel like the normal formula for a renovation is just
10:33knocking all the walls down, like making it open concept everywhere.
10:37And because we're not doing that, I don't know.
10:40I wonder, are we doing enough?
10:43So we'll see.
10:44You've been here already for a couple of years.
10:46Do you feel like you're at home already or not yet?
10:50No.
10:51Not quite yet.
10:52Not really.
10:53We've just been living in this house as we bought it for a while.
10:55Yeah.
10:56So it'll be nice to make it our own.
10:58Yeah.
10:59It's like there's no personality there.
11:01Yeah.
11:02Yeah.
11:03Yeah.
11:04Obviously.
11:05Okay.
11:06And then if we put in a little more personality?
11:08I'm not sure.
11:09Okay.
11:10Then that's the goal.
11:11Number one goal.
11:12We want this place to feel like home.
11:13Sweet.
11:14All right.
11:15Let's keep going.
11:16You guys don't waste any time.
11:21I'm already busting things out.
11:23I want to open up the wall.
11:24Okay.
11:25Figure out what we're dealing with there.
11:28Here we go.
11:29All right.
11:30One down.
11:32Okay.
11:33Very nice.
11:34One.
11:36Oh.
11:37What is that?
11:38Uh-huh.
11:41Did you know?
11:42Have you seen that before?
11:43I never noticed it.
11:44They've seen it but never really knew to know or question what it is.
11:47Never thought about it.
11:48So you see how you have full storage in all of these?
11:50Uh-huh.
11:51That's...
11:52They've worked around something here, which would normally mean that's a post.
11:56Uh-oh.
11:57That's probably a problem.
11:58Huh?
11:59If there's a main point load...
12:01Oh, wow.
12:03It actually lines up with what looks like the second story exterior.
12:07Okay.
12:08Which means this might be a point load carrying the load of the second story.
12:13And if that's the case, it is not going to be quite as easy as just shoving this back.
12:20Uh-huh.
12:21No.
12:22I want to open this up and see what the heck we're dealing with.
12:24What it is.
12:25Yes.
12:26If you want to cross your fingers and toes and anything you can physically cross...
12:34Can you do that for me?
12:35Sure.
12:36Oh!
12:37That was perfect.
12:39There is something.
12:41Yes, there is.
12:42Oh.
12:43What is that?
12:48Oh, my gosh.
12:49We got all kinds of stuff.
12:50Back there.
12:55Hmm.
12:56We have copper.
12:57We have...
12:58I think this is a gas line.
13:02The good news is...
13:05It does not look like this is a structural issue here.
13:08Oh, okay.
13:09But I feel like they're hiding something else.
13:11Normally, when you frame a wall this deep...
13:13Right.
13:14...it's because you have a main stack in there.
13:15If we have to move a main stack, that's like the most expensive plumbing thing that you can do.
13:21Oh, my God.
13:29Is that what you said?
13:30Well, it's not a stack, it's a vent.
13:31Okay.
13:32So, you're gonna find a vent there as well.
13:34There's a black pipe in there, yeah.
13:35Okay, so that's your sink, vent.
13:37Is there a big thick black pipe?
13:42Oh, my God.
13:43One, two...
13:46Okay, here's another pipe.
13:51Oh, boy.
13:56That is crazy.
13:58Yeah, it's a vent pipe.
13:59Okay.
14:01You guys are so lucky.
14:02We can move ahead without changing the plan.
14:05It's all good.
14:06It's good news.
14:07And you said that there's an issue with a leak to the crawl space.
14:10Yeah, yeah.
14:11So, let's see how bad that is.
14:14It's strange that Stephanie and Mike's bathroom has a leaking issue because this house is not that old.
14:18So, my guess is that whoever worked on the plumbing here before really cut corners or just didn't do the job properly.
14:25Hold your breath.
14:26Hold your breath.
14:27Whoa.
14:28Yeah.
14:29Oh, my.
14:30It's, uh...
14:31Ew, gross.
14:32It's not good.
14:33Ugh.
14:34It's horrible.
14:35That is what I was afraid of.
14:37That is a pool of water that is just living under your tile.
14:40Yes.
14:41All of this is mold.
14:44Uh-uh.
14:45Yeah.
14:46Oh, gross.
14:47Yeah.
14:48It's really unhealthy.
14:49Yes.
14:50Okay.
14:51I'll keep opening up the bathroom, but if we find more mold and moisture issues, this could get expensive.
14:56Yikes.
14:57Stephanie and Mike feel frustrated that this house doesn't feel like home for every member of their large blended family.
15:07Their 14s have been through a lot of upheaval in the last few years, and they each deserve a space that feels safe and comfortable.
15:14I'm meeting with all of them one by one for a design consult to see if we can finally make everybody happy, starting with one of Stephanie's twins, Sienna.
15:24I would never know this is the room that belongs to a musical theater student.
15:28I just want to add, like, some life to it, some personality.
15:31What specifically?
15:32Is it color?
15:33Is it texture?
15:34Is it art?
15:35All of the above.
15:37Maximalist, colorful, just fun.
15:40I'm very messy, so...
15:43Storage and organization.
15:44Yes, definitely.
15:45Great.
15:46I also...
15:47Or we could just learn how to put things away.
15:48Eh.
15:49I've been trying.
15:50No, I can't miss ya, no, I can't miss ya.
15:53Yes, I miss ya, yes, I miss ya.
15:58Now that we've torn down the wall in Stephanie and Mike's bathroom to expand it into that unnecessary hallway space,
16:12we're framing the new plumbing wall.
16:14We'll be moving the vanity right back to this new wall, which will give us lots of space to add a private water closet, a larger shower, a sitting area to do makeup, and a great standalone tub.
16:25Upstairs, we've got a whopping four bedrooms to remodel, so we're getting started with Sienna's and trying to help her find her voice.
16:32Obviously, Sienna wants to have a space that feels more representative of her creative nature.
16:39We're talking textured wallpaper, fun gallery wall, and bold patterns because she's a maximalist.
16:45And part of that is having a lot of stuff.
16:47Yeah.
16:48If there's anything I know, teenagers need drawers and shelves and hanging and somewhere to put all their junk.
16:54Why is it you know that?
16:56Because I was a teenager once.
16:57Oh, yeah.
16:58I thought you had some pearl of wisdom.
17:00In Stephanie and Mike's bathroom, we're tearing out all the pipes in that old wall and we'll be installing brand new plumbing in the new wall for their vanity.
17:17Unfortunately, we also found some unwanted surprises when we started opening things up.
17:22I reached out to Stephanie and Mike at the rental where they're staying to see if they can come meet me to see this in person.
17:27Here, step over here.
17:30You can see this whole wall had a massive leak in it.
17:33Oh, my gosh.
17:34You can see it's totally rotten all through that support.
17:36That goes straight to the outside.
17:39Yep.
17:40That's the stuff over there.
17:41What happened is that the water was leaking in behind your shower tiles, which caused that damage, and the mold we found under the floor.
17:47Oh, my God.
17:48Luckily, none of the actual subfloor was damaged, so we just need to continue reframing the shower wall, add some new waterproofing to ensure everything is wet.
17:56Which will cost about an extra $1,500.
18:00Okay.
18:01It's pretty bad.
18:02One thing, actually, that has always concerned me is the guest bathroom downstairs.
18:07Okay.
18:08It's, from day one, has always smelled musty.
18:11Oh.
18:12And that would be our foster child's room and then bathroom.
18:16And this shower never smelled, and it was that bad.
18:19And that shower actually smells, so I can't imagine what's underneath.
18:23What's lurking?
18:24Yeah.
18:25Musty smell immediately means there's mold somewhere.
18:28Right?
18:29Okay.
18:30And so that's...
18:31So I am afraid of that.
18:32Well, and when they do their inspection, if they smell mold, they will not approve you.
18:36Yeah.
18:37Why don't we take a quick look and see what it looks like.
18:39Yeah.
18:40We just have a couple of things to complete in order to have our house inspected.
18:44And after Jonathan took apart our bathroom, I realized that there could really be some problems.
18:51Okay.
18:54Yeah.
18:55Aha.
18:56I smell it.
18:57Yeah.
18:58Yeah.
18:59I...
19:00I can smell what you're smelling.
19:01Right?
19:02Okay.
19:03Oh, yeah.
19:04It's not...
19:05It's not in here as much as it is out here.
19:12I mean, there's definitely a problem.
19:15Okay.
19:16You're right.
19:17I see a lot of discoloring around the toilet.
19:20Okay.
19:21Anytime you have stone or tile and then you use silicone around the bottom of the toilet,
19:25if there is a leak with the toilet, it goes into the subfloor.
19:29Oh, okay.
19:30If you want to go for it, we'll dive in and we can do a full bath remodel over here as well.
19:35I think with what we learned in our bathroom while we're doing it, let's just get it all done and go for it.
19:39Sounds good.
19:40Definitely can get rid of the smell.
19:41It's weird.
19:42It's a mystery smell.
19:43I don't know what it is.
19:44Sometimes when homeowners come in in the middle of a project, they see things that are happening.
19:48They want to add on additional work.
19:50Well, in this situation, they're adding on an entire bathroom.
19:53The other bathroom isn't huge, so I don't think it's going to be a massive blow to the budget.
19:59I'm really happy to take care of this for them because this is the work that has to be done in order for them to pass their safety check.
20:05We'll know more about the final costs once we open things all up.
20:08Most important, we need to get to the bottom of what this smell is.
20:12And then that will tell us, is there a bunch more framing?
20:15Is it plumbing?
20:16What is it that's causing the problem?
20:23The state of the electrical in Stephanie and Mike's kitchen is really chaotic.
20:26They have random recessed lights and switches everywhere, and they find it really exacerbating.
20:31We're replacing all of them with two statement fixtures for some much-needed elegance and simplicity.
20:38This began as a pretty simple renovation, and now it's started to grow to a point where we have seven spaces that we have to make over.
20:46And among all this chaos, we cannot lose sight of our original goal.
20:50This house needs to feel like home for all six members of this family, plus a foster child.
20:55That's why my design consult is so important.
20:58I just want to make sure that their daughter, Kayla, who is the youngest member of this family, has everything she needs to grow up happy here.
21:05I like lots of, like, bold stuff.
21:08And this is the complete opposite of bold.
21:10Yeah.
21:11I have friends over a lot, so I like to have seating.
21:14We would just, like, sit on my bed and just, like, chill there.
21:18Okay.
21:19What do you guys usually talk about?
21:20Like, drama.
21:21Drama.
21:22Oh, whoa.
21:23That would give you somewhere that is perfect for having sibling hangouts or friend hangouts.
21:28Whatever you want.
21:29That would be ideal.
21:30Okay.
21:39These are four very different teenagers with very different personal styles.
21:43So by doing this feature on Kayla's wall, she wants, like, bold colors and bright.
21:48She wants somewhere where her friends can come over and it feels fun and cool.
21:51I mean, with this being a blended family, we don't want the kids to feel like this is just somewhere to crash when they're hanging out with dad.
21:57So we gotta get it right.
21:58The most worrying part of this renovation is what might be hiding beneath the floors or behind the walls of the foster bathroom.
22:10Once everything is torn out, I'm hoping we'll be able to locate the source of that moldy smell that not only stresses out the family, but also hinders their chances of passing the foster inspection.
22:20Hey.
22:21How we doing?
22:22Good, good.
22:23Want a little hand?
22:24So you won't believe what I found over at Steph and Mike's.
22:25What do you mean?
22:26Check out all the damaged plywood over here.
22:27Oh, my gosh.
22:28That's disgusting.
22:29Mm-hmm.
22:30This is the bathroom next to the foster's room?
22:31Yeah, exactly.
22:32Oh, wow.
22:33That's way worse than we thought it was gonna be.
22:34Mm-hmm.
22:35Mm-hmm.
22:36So can you go back to the toilet?
22:37Yeah.
22:38Area?
22:39All that mold damage, all the plywood, all the subfloor, all that's damaged.
22:42Oh, my gosh.
22:43How is the toilet even standing?
22:44Yeah, I know, right?
22:45It should just fall right through.
22:46That's awful.
22:48This is the bathroom next to the foster's room?
22:50Yeah.
22:51The wax all ripped.
22:52Yeah.
22:53The wax all ripped.
22:54Yeah.
22:55The wax all ripped.
22:56The wax all ripped.
22:57The wax all ripped.
22:58The wax all ripped.
22:59The wax all ripped.
23:00The wax all ripped.
23:01The wax all ripped.
23:02The wax all ripped.
23:03The wax all ripped.
23:04The wax all ripped.
23:05The wax all ripped.
23:06The wax all ripped.
23:07The wax all ripped.
23:08It was just faulty.
23:09Oh, that's gross.
23:10Okay.
23:11So, well, let's fix all the plumbing issues.
23:12Replace all the subfloor.
23:13Get rid of the smell.
23:14Mm-hmm.
23:15And we're gonna have to treat that whole space.
23:16I mean, it's definitely gonna go over our budget, I would say.
23:19Probably $30,000 just for that bathroom.
23:22We already have a whopping seven rooms that we have to renovate for Stephanie and Mike's home.
23:26And now we find out that the foster bathroom is a complete gut job.
23:29This project started as a fairly straightforward refresh, but it has just started
23:33snowballing.
23:34I mean, it has to be done.
23:35This is a safety concern and the family will never be approved for a foster if that bathroom
23:40isn't redone and is completely safe.
23:41Yeah.
23:42So, I'm not gonna eat dinner tonight.
23:43I don't feel good.
23:44Okay.
23:45You know what it's about.
23:46Waking up on linens with a high thread count.
23:50Stephanie and Mike have okayed the extra cost for the foster bathroom, so we're gonna gut
23:53this thing, but there's a lot of work to do to get it foster ready.
23:56Yeah.
23:57All the subfloor has been removed and we are starting from scratch with all the plumbing.
24:01In the main suite bathroom, we're moving ahead with the tile.
24:04Stephanie and Mike's old 80s style galley bathroom gave them no peace, so calm neutrals
24:09should hopefully add a relaxing element to the space.
24:12And speaking of personal spaces, my design consult with Mike's son Dylan was all about brainstorming
24:17some ideas for his maturing taste.
24:20I want it to be, you know, more modern, but not too, like, Tony Stark.
24:24You don't want it to be too flashy?
24:26Not too flashy, yeah.
24:27I'm really into cars and stuff.
24:28Okay.
24:29So maybe like a, you know, classic race advertisement poster or something like that.
24:32Not just pictures of cars.
24:33It's kind of, you know, childish, but...
24:35Right.
24:36There's a different way to enjoy that as a grown-up than there is as a kid.
24:39So it's doing it in tasteful ways.
24:41Yeah.
24:42And my girlfriend, she'll come over here.
24:43We'll play music or something like that.
24:45Door open.
24:46All the time.
24:47All right.
24:48You want to make sure you have a space that feels like, hey, I can show off a little bit
24:53and have a nice space for my girlfriend.
24:55Yeah.
24:56Hey, question.
24:59Are we going to go for a car theme or what did Dylan say in the end?
25:02He's a little too old to do a car-shaped bed.
25:04So what if we, because he does want something a little bit more sophisticated.
25:09He's got a girlfriend.
25:11Okay.
25:12So I can sort of see sleep area, lounge area.
25:15Gaming, stuff like that.
25:16And I want a place where he and his girlfriend can just chill out and listen to music.
25:20Do you want me to write like a romantic song that he can serenade his girlfriend with?
25:24No, I want their relationship to actually flourish.
25:26Ouch.
25:27This is a lot of projects in a very big house.
25:34It almost feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
25:37Yes, all the water issues are fixed, but once the drywall goes up in the main suite bathroom,
25:41there's still a lot of work to do.
25:43This is a massive space.
25:44Bathroom's big.
25:45Shower's big.
25:46Most important, no weird hallways that were just a waste of space.
25:50And both the subfloor and all the plumbing have been completely replaced in the foster bathroom.
25:55Well, normally I'm like, ugh, last minute add-on.
25:59But knowing who would be using this room, knowing how important it is for them,
26:05I'm glad we're able to make this happen.
26:07All right, you got the biggie?
26:08Yep.
26:09This is definitely going to pass the foster inspection because we're going to do everything
26:13possible here to make it perfect.
26:14No more mold rot or anything like that.
26:17Everything's going to be clean and safe and no smell.
26:20And you can sit on the throne and not worry about falling through to the crawl space.
26:25No.
26:31The only thing Stephanie and Mike didn't hate about their old kitchen was the quality of their cabinets.
26:35So instead of buying expensive new ones, we're prepping these cabinets for a facelift.
26:48Hey, guy, look what the door just did to me.
26:50How did that happen?
26:51Just pulling the screws out.
26:53Does that hurt?
26:54Oh, thank you.
26:55I just got tetanus.
26:57Well, I am glad that we can reuse these cabinets because they're solid.
27:01You know, the color is dated and...
27:05You might want to move your other arm because you're right where my pole zone is.
27:10This is going to look a heck of a lot better because obviously we'll spray,
27:13but I want to test on one of the doors and just see what it looks like.
27:17Here, you open that.
27:18Different species of wood will take stains differently.
27:20It'll take paint differently.
27:21So I think we just throw a little bit on here, see what it looks like.
27:23We can adjust the color and then we can send them off for spraying.
27:26Should we test it?
27:27Should we test it?
27:28Yeah.
27:29The color?
27:30Yeah.
27:31I would.
27:34Wood joke.
27:35No, I got it.
27:36I didn't want to get it, but I got it.
27:44That's really light.
27:52This is super light.
27:54I don't know about this.
27:55Maybe too light?
27:56Maybe too light.
27:57I mean, we do like cabinets all the time.
27:58I mean, we do like cabinets all the time, but I'm just thinking like, is it going to do the trick?
28:02They hate this kitchen and we're not taking out any walls, reconfiguring or replacing cabinets.
28:07So we have to do everything we can to bring in some of that style.
28:10I just worry that this isn't enough to make them like this kitchen.
28:13I just worry that this isn't enough to make them like this kitchen.
28:16Everything's pretty light.
28:17Even the wall.
28:18Like this is very similar to the wall color.
28:20So I'm a little.
28:21Well, they like a more modern style, right?
28:22Yeah.
28:23So what if we do black countertop, a dark bent hood, black hardware.
28:26We're making this kitchen as interesting as we can without it going crazy.
28:28Yeah.
28:29That's a great idea.
28:30This is actually a fairly nice color.
28:31Got like a nice undertone of green to it.
28:32It's not like ultra white, especially knowing it's a little bit tighter of a space.
28:35This might be nice.
28:36It's better than buying new cabinets.
28:37That's for sure.
28:38Do what you gotta do, baby.
28:39In order to give a like new feel to these not so new cabinets, we're sanding them down,
28:40spraying a primer, and finally applying our creamy olive cabinets.
28:41We're going crazy.
28:42Yeah.
28:43That's a great idea.
28:44This is actually a fairly nice color.
28:45Got like a nice undertone of green to it.
28:46It's not like ultra white.
28:47Especially knowing it's a little bit tighter of a space.
28:48This might be nice.
28:49It's better than buying new cabinets.
28:50That's for sure.
28:51Do what you gotta do, baby.
28:52In order to give a like new feel to these not so new cabinets, we're sanding them down,
29:05spraying a primer, and finally applying our creamy olive cabinet color.
29:10It's a lot of work, but it saves money for college and prevents this fine woodwork from
29:14ending up in a landfill.
29:15We just hope the new look satisfies this family's need for a new kitchen.
29:20In the main street bathroom, we're hoping the new vanity wall is going to give Stephanie
29:23and Mike the space that they so desperately needed.
29:27And after three years, Stephanie's other twin, Sophia, also has changing needs.
29:32So when we came into this house, I was in seventh grade, but I would love it to now just have
29:38like a more mature feeling now that I'm like growing up and in high school.
29:42How mature would you say you are?
29:43Like, are you thinking about mortgage amortization and tax strategies?
29:47Definitely, yes.
29:49I usually just like will turn my desk chair around to this mirror and just sit and do my
29:55makeup there.
29:56So it would be great to now just have like a makeup mirror.
29:59All right, I can help with the demolition right now if you'd like.
30:02Oh, great.
30:03Get us one step closer.
30:04Oh.
30:05One step closer to my dream, right?
30:07Exactly.
30:08We have been working hard to make sure that every single one of Stephanie and Mike's kids
30:12have what they need to be comfortable in this home.
30:15They all have different personalities and very different styles, so it has definitely been
30:19a challenge.
30:20Well, I think this is the perfect sort of little makeup mirror and vanity for Sophia.
30:25Bringing classy vibes that you wouldn't normally think that a kid is going to be into.
30:30And it feels unique.
30:31Yeah, I love that detail.
30:33It's sort of that transition to adulthood.
30:35I mean, there's so much in here that is all very adult.
30:38Yeah, it's definitely grown up.
30:39I just hope it's enough to finally make this feel like home.
30:50To bring some wow factor to this once-dated kitchen, we've decided to go for some high contrast.
30:54Darker countertops, lighter cabinets, and backsplash.
30:57Since we're not changing a whole lot in this kitchen, we want to make sure the change we do is pretty impressive.
31:02We opted to carry the same high contrast vibe into the main suite bathroom to bring it out of the 80s and into the wow.
31:11The updated Foster bathroom has warmer tones and its own unique style because we wanted it to feel like its own unique space.
31:17Yeah, but the Foster bedroom still feels a little sterile, so we hatched a bit of a plan with Mike and Stephanie's teens.
31:22Hey.
31:23How you doing, guys?
31:25I am in need of a little help on the project.
31:28Can you paint?
31:29Torto.
31:30Sure.
31:31The kids agreed to help us tackle an additional project as a surprise for their parents, a fresh bedroom makeover for their new foster sibling.
31:39Hey.
31:40This is so fun.
31:42I think you're getting moved.
31:44Whoa.
31:46Hey.
31:47Wait a little bit.
31:48It looks just like me.
31:51Fostering just sounds great.
31:53It's a really big process.
31:54We've been working on it for a while.
31:56We have a huge family.
31:57It's always great to add more people.
31:59Yeah.
32:00I want another brother.
32:01More boys in my house.
32:02Yeah.
32:12Are we changing layout at all or do you want to keep the bed on this wall, obviously?
32:16Makes the most sense over here.
32:17Yeah.
32:18Bed, side table, side table.
32:19Lounge-y, bed-y, desk-y.
32:21For me, it's all about the personality that we've added.
32:26There was really no personality in this house.
32:28No, there was none at all.
32:29And it's hard for a family to feel at home if the house doesn't reflect literally anything about them.
32:34What do you think?
32:35Think Sofia's gonna be happy?
32:37I think so.
32:38I mean, every room is so different, but do you think enough has changed overall in the whole house?
32:44Because a lot of this is the original layout.
32:46It's just staging in the bedroom.
32:48Your furniture, paint, wallpaper, that can transform a space, but is that enough to make it feel like home?
32:53Yeah.
32:54Way to be a Debbie Downer.
33:01Oh, this is the day.
33:02Excited.
33:03I am nervous.
33:04What?
33:05Anxious excitement.
33:06You don't think you're gonna see what you like?
33:08I just don't know how different it could be.
33:10Like, we didn't do a lot of structural changes.
33:13We weren't even changing out our cabinets, so...
33:15I don't think we need to rip walls apart to blow your mind.
33:18Okay.
33:19We like that.
33:20Awesome.
33:21I'm super nervous.
33:25This is exciting.
33:28I'm super nervous.
33:32This is exciting.
33:33Oh, wow.
33:35Oh, my gosh.
33:37Wow.
33:38I'm already seeing...
33:39What?
33:40Babe, this is amazing.
33:41This is not our kitchen.
33:43Oh, my goodness.
33:45This looks great.
33:46This is so beautiful.
33:51This is not our house.
33:52This definitely looks transformed.
33:55I know they're the same cabinets, but it looks completely different.
33:58Just looks so beautiful.
33:59There's a classiness to it.
34:00There's a character to it.
34:02I know you guys didn't move any walls, but it seems wider.
34:06Yeah.
34:07It's wider.
34:08It's for sure wider.
34:09It's because it feels brighter.
34:10Yes.
34:11Yeah.
34:12And I love that you guys did not just do white.
34:14Like, this cream color is gorgeous.
34:17There's a tiny green undertone, which I really like.
34:19I love it.
34:20It's a subtle, sophisticated color.
34:22Yeah.
34:23This really has character, but it's updated.
34:26We paired that with contrasting elements like the countertops and the hardware to make it feel more modern.
34:31Which was the goal?
34:32Mission accomplished.
34:33And the light fixture, this is what I've always wanted here, and not all the hand lights.
34:38Yeah.
34:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:40It's a happy place now.
34:41Yeah.
34:42It's great.
34:43I'm gonna be cooking lots of meals in here.
34:44This is a win.
34:45Pick a sports analogy.
34:46This is a home run, a touchdown, a three-pointer, a goal.
34:49All of it.
34:50Yes.
34:51This is awesome.
34:52So, we have a lot of house to look at.
34:53If there's more?
34:54Yeah.
34:55Yeah.
34:56So much more.
34:57As you know, it took a lot more work than we originally planned for the foster bathroom.
35:00But I think it was the best decision.
35:02It was.
35:03Yeah.
35:04Like, because it always smelled so bad.
35:05Let's look at your bathroom.
35:06Outstanding.
35:07Okay.
35:09Oh, my.
35:10What?
35:11Gosh.
35:12Wow.
35:13This is not the same bathroom.
35:15This is not even the same room.
35:16This is amazing.
35:17This is amazing.
35:18It feels nice.
35:19Well, notice it smells different.
35:20Yes, that's a good story.
35:21Yeah, so what was that smell?
35:23Every time the toilet was flushed, it was leaking into the subfloor, and it was leaking underneath.
35:28We tore out all the subfloor and fixed everything, so you'll pass your foster inspection.
35:32And we gave it some extra love, so whoever uses this bathroom will feel right at home.
35:37This is their bathroom.
35:38This is their restroom.
35:39This is their restroom.
35:40Yeah.
35:41Yeah.
35:42And it goes really well with this cute bedroom right next door.
35:44Mm-hmm.
35:45Right.
35:46Let's see.
35:50Exciting.
35:51Oh, my.
35:52Oh, my.
35:53Oh, my.
35:54Wow.
35:55Wow.
35:56Wow.
35:57Wow.
35:58Wow.
35:59It just makes it real, and that we're gonna really be able to give someone an opportunity
36:03to have a home that is safe and stable and consistent.
36:09Yeah.
36:10Have some love in it.
36:11Yeah.
36:12This is amazing.
36:13This is so cute.
36:14What a great color.
36:15And your kids are rock stars, too.
36:17They painted this.
36:18Oh.
36:19They came in and helped us out.
36:20They just wanted to make this foster child feel at home, too.
36:22This is pretty spectacular, so this makes me feel good.
36:26You deserve a little something just for the two of you, as well.
36:29All we need to do is get our house inspected one last time.
36:35And I just have been dragging my feet partially because of that odor that was coming from the
36:40bathroom, and so now I just feel, like, ready to go.
36:43The way that the bathroom came together, the way that the room came together, we have
36:47a space that we can give them and that they can feel like part of the family.
36:51Check out your new bathroom.
36:53Oh, boy.
36:54Wow.
36:55Oh, my God.
36:56Whoa.
36:57Whoa.
36:58Oh, my gosh.
37:01Wow.
37:03A little different.
37:04A lot different.
37:05I can't.
37:06This is not our home.
37:08What is happening?
37:11It's amazing what you do when you get rid of a hallway that's unnecessary.
37:15Wow.
37:16Yeah.
37:17Everything was so tight in here.
37:19The thing that drove you insane, that wasted hallway.
37:21Yeah.
37:22You're just doing nothing.
37:23Yeah.
37:24Look at how big this is now.
37:25This is amazing.
37:26We can do parties in here.
37:27You can definitely do parties in here.
37:28Yeah.
37:29I feel like this could not be mine.
37:30Yeah, yeah.
37:31Check that out.
37:32This is a massive shower.
37:33With no rotting floor.
37:34I'm getting into it.
37:35There's no rotting floors.
37:37And the door opens and closes with these.
37:40There's a nice height here, too.
37:42This is really you guys have outdone yourselves.
37:45Thank you so much.
37:46Even your tub, it ended up being the perfect spot for a freestanding tub.
37:51Yeah.
37:52That is really beautiful.
37:54So cool.
37:55I love that it has the freestanding faucet, too.
37:57I love that.
37:58I see that in high-end hotels.
38:00Mm-hmm.
38:01Yeah.
38:02I just...
38:03This is amazing.
38:04It used to be like, okay, let me just get in and get out.
38:05Because it was not a place you wanted to spend any time with.
38:08It was tight.
38:09It was cramped.
38:10It was leaky.
38:11I was putting up with so much.
38:12But then this dark wood in here.
38:14Yeah.
38:15The contrast and just how bright it is in here.
38:17Natural tones.
38:18Mm-hmm.
38:19It makes you feel like it's kind of like a spa.
38:22Wow.
38:23We are mature adults having an elevated moment.
38:26Yeah.
38:27Yeah.
38:28It's this opulent beauty of a bathroom now.
38:30Can I clarify one thing?
38:31Yeah.
38:32By opulent beauty, were you talking about us?
38:34Always, yeah.
38:35Or Stephanie?
38:36Yeah.
38:37Everything.
38:38I think what we should probably do, why don't we let you explore your space a little bit,
38:43and then we can take the kids up into their rooms and show them their new spaces.
38:47Awesome.
38:48All right.
38:49We'll be back.
38:50Awesome.
38:51Thank you, guys.
38:52The kids had doubts.
38:53Like, okay, we know we gave them kind of direction, but where does that go?
38:58So, to make one of four teenagers happy would be a good batting average, but to get four
39:04for four, that'll be pretty amazing if they can do that.
39:07Did I get it right?
39:08Oh, boy.
39:10Holy cow.
39:13Wow.
39:15Completely different.
39:16Wow.
39:17Pretty wild, right?
39:18Dang.
39:19Yeah, it is.
39:20I mean, it looks like an actual bedroom.
39:22Like, I remember previously, like, I was, it felt almost like a construction side office,
39:27like unfinished, like nothing was here.
39:29This is like my room.
39:30Like, wow.
39:31We wanted to make sure it felt a little more grown up.
39:33Yeah.
39:34You're grown up.
39:35You love cars.
39:36Mm-hmm.
39:37You have some collectibles.
39:38So, we wanted to showcase that stuff.
39:40You and your girlfriend are hanging out.
39:41You just want to have somewhere comfortable.
39:42Mm-hmm.
39:43It's sort of nice to have a seating area, too.
39:44Yeah.
39:45And actually, when you do want to feel a little immature, sit down in this chair here.
39:47Okay.
39:48When you want to feel a little immature, you still have swivel chairs, which would be a
39:51good time.
39:52Oh, this is so cool.
39:53Oh, my gosh.
39:54Dang.
39:55Yeah.
39:56This is awesome, you guys.
39:57Thank you so much.
39:58Yeah, man.
39:59This is exactly how I dreamt of it.
40:00This is 11 out of 10.
40:01Yes.
40:02We're one for one.
40:03Do I open it?
40:04Yeah.
40:05Yeah.
40:06I'm nervous.
40:07Oh, my gosh.
40:08Oh, my gosh.
40:09Oh, my gosh.
40:10I love that.
40:12I love that wall.
40:14Oh, my gosh.
40:15Did I get right?
40:16Yes.
40:17Yes, yes, yes.
40:18Yes.
40:19And the chair.
40:20Oh, my gosh.
40:21Like my old room, we would just sit on my bed, but now there's way more places we can
40:26sit to just chat, and it'll be lots of fun.
40:28And I know you said you want to have a space that's super bold, lots of color, texture,
40:33just overall fun.
40:34I felt like that was very you.
40:35Yes.
40:36I love the colors.
40:38It's, like, perfect.
40:39Oh, I love it.
40:412 and 0.
40:44After you.
40:46Oh, my gosh.
40:49This is insane.
40:52You like it?
40:53I love it.
40:54It's perfect.
40:55Like, before, my room was, like, really childish seventh grade kind of stuff, but now it's,
41:01like, really mature.
41:03Isn't that cute?
41:04I've always wanted a vanity.
41:05I'm always, like, sitting on the floor doing my makeup.
41:07You're grown up.
41:08You should be sitting on the floor doing your makeup.
41:11I love the pops of color with the pillows and the color on the wall.
41:14There's a sophistication to this bedroom.
41:16Yeah, for sure.
41:17This isn't going to make your parents upset because you're growing up too fast, is it?
41:22Because this is a very grown up space.
41:24Yeah, this is very, like, I feel like I'm turning into a new person, and this is perfect for that.
41:29Let's see if we can go for a clean sweep.
41:32Okay.
41:33Go ahead.
41:34This is all for you.
41:37Oh, my gosh.
41:39Wow.
41:40This is crazy.
41:42This is so pretty.
41:44I love all of this art and stuff.
41:47This is so much better than my old room.
41:49There's, like, nothing in it.
41:50Just completely white walls.
41:51Before it felt underwhelming when you walk in, and you were not an underwhelming personality.
41:56Is this the maximalist vibe you wanted?
41:59Yes, this is perfect.
42:00This is great.
42:01Giving you a feature wall with a beautiful grass cloth on it.
42:04You've got the burl wood for the side tables.
42:07You've got this nice desk over here.
42:09And, of course, a closet organizational system to help keep you tidy.
42:13No way.
42:14I tried that before and it didn't work.
42:16Well, you are a musical theater.
42:18You're a creative soul.
42:19You needed to have a space that can inspire you.
42:21So I hope we got it right.
42:22Yeah, this is awesome.
42:24This just feels like home.
42:25It feels so me.
42:26Like, I'm excited.
42:29You're welcome.
42:30It feels good that they each feel like they have put a stamp on the house.
42:35Not only with their rooms, but the foster child's room.
42:38So they're just invested in this home.
42:41They were all really, really pumped.
42:43There was genuine enthusiasm on their faces.
42:45Like, oh, my goodness.
42:46Oh, my gosh.
42:47Oh, my gosh.
42:48Oh, my gosh.
42:49It's so much better.
42:50This is so sweet.
42:51They really feel like, hey, this is our place now.
42:54All right, question.
42:55Yeah.
42:56By show of hands, who thinks this feels like home?
42:59Go easy.
43:00Yeah.
