00:00To Spain now, and one of the deadliest rail disasters the country has seen in years.
00:08Two high-speed trains collided head-on Sunday night in the southern part of the country,
00:13killing at least 39 people, leaving dozens more injured.
00:17The crash happened near Cordoba when the rear cars of a train jumped the track
00:22and slammed into an oncoming train.
00:24The impact ripped the front cars off the second train,
00:27sending them down an embankment and leaving multiple carriages twisted and off the rails.
00:33Rescue crews worked through the night using cutting tools to reach passengers trapped inside
00:38as survivors crawled out through broken windows.
00:41The transport minister called it a truly strange accident on a stretch of track that had just been renovated.
00:47Train service across much of southern Spain is now suspended.
00:51An investigation is underway into how two high-speed trains ended up on the same track.
