00:00Valentino Garavani, the veteran jet set Italian fashion designer, has died at his home in Rome.

00:07He was 93. Known for his high glamour gowns, he was a pillar of the country's fashion industry

00:14and his firm crucially remained relevant over many decades for its early days in the 1960s

00:20and beyond his own retirement in 2008.

00:24Universally known by his first name, Valentino was adored by generations of royals, first ladies and movie stars,

00:31from Jackie Kennedy Onassis to Julia Roberts and Queen Rainier of Jordan.

00:36He was also close to Diana, Princess of Wales.

00:39Valentino was born into a well-off family in a town south of Milan in May 1932.

00:45He said it was his childhood love of cinema that set him down the fashion path.

00:50After studying fashion in Milan and Paris, he spent much of the 1950s working for established Paris-based designers

00:57before striking out on his own.

01:00He founded the house of Valentino in 1959.

01:03He became a major figure in haute couture and an emblem of the Dolce Vita of the 1960s.
