Transcript
00:00.
00:07More than half of Uganda's population are classified as young people.
00:12But in an economy with few opportunities and a high youth unemployment rate,
00:17most have to make do on their own.
00:20Some use their skills in the informal sector,
00:23whilst others just cannot seem to find their place in a hugely competitive market.
00:28Times are tough, yet when it came time to vote,
00:31they decided to renew the mandate of the country's long-time ruler.
00:35The 81-year-old Yoerumusebini secured no less than 72% of the poll,
00:41a significant portion of which came from these young voters.
00:45Yet they now want their reward.
00:47We need money in our pockets.
00:49We need our businesses to grow.
00:52We need money.
00:55We need money as individuals, as a country.
00:58And so the economy has to grow and enable us also to grow.
01:03Among the sectors most in need of reform and investment is health.
01:07Experts say it's facing severe challenges,
01:10ranging from underfunding to shortages of health workers.
01:14With facilities lacking basic utilities and essential medicines,
01:18many young women say this puts their lives at risk.
01:25What I would love to see the most are functional hospitals,
01:30so we can have safe deliveries.
01:32We are giving birth on the floor.
01:34You're in labor and the midwife tells you to stay there
01:37because the delivery beds are all occupied.
01:39And there are another 10 women delivering on the floor
01:42because all of the beds are full.
01:44Campaigners warn the government must tackle corruption
01:48to ensure money reaches the right channels
01:50and improve sectors like health and education.
01:54Nearly $2.7 billion is lost to corruption in Uganda every year,
01:59depriving the country of the funds needed for essential public services.
02:05President Museveni says his new government will not spare corrupt public officials,
02:10but will also focus on wealth creation for young people
02:14and improving health care services.
02:17This time really I want the Bazu Kuru to support me
02:20and we really implement free education in government schools.
02:29But then finally, corruption is a big issue.
02:33And it creates injustice.
02:37And more money is coming available to the government.
02:41The Minister of Finance says the economy is showing impressive growth
02:45and should perform even better in the coming months
02:48due to investments in the oil and gas sector and energy.
02:52The GDP grew by 6.3% last financial year which ended in June 2025.
03:01And it's now projected that it's going to grow between 6.5 and 7% this financial year, 25-26.
03:11And then, in two double digits, we are going to experience,
03:17we are projected to experience double-digit growth of our economy in the medium term
03:23within the coming three to five years.
03:27As a result, the size of the economy is projected to increase to U.S. dollars 68.4 billion.
03:37The Finance Ministry is also targeting sectors like agriculture
03:41to provide more funds for the government's programs.
03:44As Museveni returns to office after a hectic campaigning period
03:48when he no doubt had the concerns of many worried young people,
03:53it remains to be seen just how much support he's willing to give them.
03:58that knowledge and conversation with the others.
