Valentino, the Italian fashion designer who built one of the country's most celebrated luxury houses and was known in the industry as "the emperor," died on Monday (January 19) at his home in Rome, his foundation said. He was 93. - REUTERS

00:49Paris haute couture catwalks. Valentino was passionate about film and as a young man he

00:55dreamed of dressing what he called beautiful ladies of the silver screen.

00:59I think he just loves women, he loves to dress them, he loves to see them look beautiful and glamorous.

01:03Valentino was an only child, born into a well-to-do family in Vogueira, south of Milan.

01:08He studied couture in Milan and Paris where he then worked as an apprentice for designer Jean de Cesse.

01:14He returned home in 1960 where he opened his own fashion house in the heart of Rome.

01:19He created a business empire under his own name before selling it off ahead of his retirement in 2008.

01:41Valentino and his partner remained active in supporting the arts,

01:44opening a gallery in the center of Rome last year through their foundation.
