00:00New York residents rallied Monday to celebrate the life and work of U.S. civil rights leader
00:06Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and denounce the excess of use of force by the immigration
00:14and customer enforcement of the U.S. population.
00:17Our correspondent Henrik Amelo is there and has the following report.
00:21Hello, greetings to you and the Telesur viewers.
00:25Today on this holiday, celebrating the life of the activist and defender of minorities,
00:30Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., hundreds of protesters from different parts of New York City gathered
00:35here in Catmint Plaza to raise their voices against the abuse of authority and excessive
00:41use of force by ICE immigration agents who, according to the protesters, have been sowing
00:48terror in immigrant communities throughout the country.
00:52The death of the U.S. citizen René Good in Minneapolis at the hands of ICE agents is,
00:59for the protesters, irrefutable proof that no one in this country is safe when it comes
01:04to these immigration operations.
01:07Since 2025, 36 people have died in ICE custody, many of them from injuries sustained during
01:14raids, other from accidents that occurred during these operations, ranging from vehicular accidents
01:20to severe beatings that led to critical health conditions and subsequent deaths.
01:26And the only reason why these people were protesting today was against the military interventions
01:32abroad carried out by the Donald Trump administration, specifically against the bombing in Venezuela,
01:39which left more than 100 people dead, including several military personnel and more than 100 injured,
01:46in addition to the extensive material damage in the bombed areas.
01:50They also demand the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife,
01:56First Lady Celia Flores, who were kidnapped during the bombing on January 3.
02:03They said also that the United States must stop telling so many lies to the world to justify the plundering
02:11of nations where they only live death and destruction, and that the vast majority of the American people
02:17definitely disagree with the expansionist and genocidal policies of the Trump administration.
02:24Tomorrow there will be another rally against the Trump administration in connection to his first year
02:30in power. We will be covering the demonstration to bring you all the details of what happens there.
02:36Back to you in the studio.
