Why is Greenland called Greenland when it's covered in ice?
It started as a lie. Over 1,000 years ago, a Viking named Erik the Red was banished from Iceland for murder. He found a frozen island and named it "Greenland" — one of the first marketing campaigns in history. The name stuck.
But that's just the beginning.
Greenland is the world's largest island. Population: 57,000. There's a hidden canyon beneath the ice longer than the Grand Canyon. 25 of the 34 minerals the EU calls "critical" have been found here. 17 billion barrels of oil — more than 3 years of total U.S. production. Rare earth elements the world desperately needs.
And the ice is melting.
This video uncovers the lies, secrets, and mysteries of Greenland — and why the whole world is watching.
