Government parties get all parliament seats in Benin elections

Benin's population voted for its next National Assembly (parliament) on 11 January. The results of the elections were announced Saturday evening: the government-affiliated parties got all seats, while the main opposition party failed to get past the 20% of district votes requirement.

00:00All seats for the presidential parties.
00:05Benin's parliamentary elections have resulted in all 109 seats of the National Assembly,
00:10going to two parties from the President's coalition.
00:14The two parties received respectively 60 and 49 seats,
00:18according to the official results released over the weekend.
00:22No opposition party received any seats.
00:25The Democratic Party, the main opposition movement,
00:28failed to pass the 20% benchmark of votes in every district,
00:32a requirement for making it into parliament.
00:36Voter turnout was low but similar to the last election in 2023, at almost 37%.
00:44The parliamentary elections took place at the same time as municipal elections,
00:48in which the opposition party was however not allowed to participate.
