British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly rebuked U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on eight European countries — including the UK — over disagreements about Greenland. Starmer called the use of tariffs against close allies “completely wrong” and warned that a trade war would be harmful for all sides. He urged calm, diplomatic discussion and emphasized that decisions about Greenland’s future belong to its people and Denmark, while reaffirming the importance of strong transatlantic alliances.

00:00Mature alliances are not about pretending differences don't exist.
00:07They are about addressing them directly, respectfully and with a focus on results.
00:16On Greenland, the right way to approach an issue of this seriousness is through calm
00:22discussion between allies.
00:26And let's be clear, the security of Greenland matters.
00:30And it will matter more as climate change reshapes the Arctic, as sea routes open and strategic
00:36competition intensifies.
00:38The high north will require greater attention, greater investment and stronger collective
00:44defence.
00:47The United States will be central to that effort and the UK stands ready to contribute fully
00:53alongside our allies through NATO.
00:58But there is a principle here that cannot be set aside.
01:05Because it goes to the heart of how stable and trusted international cooperation works.
01:13And so any decision about the future status of Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland
01:21and the Kingdom of Denmark alone.
01:25That right is fundamental.
01:28And we support it.
01:31Denmark is a close ally of the United Kingdom and of the United States.
01:36A proud NATO member that has stood shoulder to shoulder with us, including at real human
01:43cost in recent decades.
01:47Alliances endure because they're built on respect and partnership, not pressure.
01:56That is why I said the use of tariffs against allies is completely wrong.
02:03It is not the right way to resolve differences within an alliance.
02:10Nor is it helpful to frame efforts to strengthen Greenland security as a justification for economic
02:17pressure.
02:20Such measures hurt British workers, British businesses and the British economy.
02:27And that is why I've been so clear on this issue.
02:31A trade war is in no one's interest.
02:36And my job is always to act in the UK's national interest.
02:42That is why yesterday I spoke to President Trump, to European leaders and to the Secretary General
02:49of NATO, to find a solution rooted in partnership, facts and mutual respect.
