Flooding forces evacuations at Kruger National Park as extreme weather batters Southern Africa

Severe flooding has forced the evacuation of around 600 tourists and staff from South Africa’s iconic Kruger National Park, after torrential rains submerged roads and camps across the vast wildlife reserve.

00:00Severe flooding forces the evacuation of around 600 tourists and staff at South Africa's iconic Karuga National Park.
00:09Torrential rains submerged roads and camps across the 22,000 square kilometer reserve,
00:15prompting authorities to shut the park's gates.
00:17With waters now receding, officials are assessing the extensive damage.
00:21We flew over the Lataba rest camp. It is clear, obviously the flooding has subsided now.
00:28But now you can see the damage. And the damage is substantial.
00:34The high water bridge at Lataba on the southern side of that bridge, it washed away completely.
00:42So that is a huge task to rebuild that, but that is, we will have to get an engineer report.
00:50Southern Africa has been battered by a surge of extreme weather in recent years.
00:56Powerful cyclones have torn through the region, killing thousands across multiple countries,
01:01while relentless drought has scorched farmland.
01:05The impacts have fueled food crises in areas already vulnerable to chronic shortages,
01:11deepening humanitarian concerns.
