Death toll in Spain train collision rises to at least 39 as rescue efforts continue, police say

Spain has the largest high-speed rail network in Europe for trains moving over 250 kph, with more than 3,100 kilometres of track, according to the European Union.

00:00At least 39 people have died and many more have been injured after a high-speed train
00:07with 300 passengers aboard derailed and collided with another train in Spain's Adamus.
00:14According to footage shared by the passenger,
00:16several carriages on the train could be seen severely damaged after the crash.
00:21Passengers reported climbing out of smashed windows,
00:25with some using emergency hammers to break them.
00:28Spain's transport minister said early on Monday that the cause of the crash was unknown.
00:33He said the back part of the first train derailed and crashed into the head of the other train,
00:38knocking its first two carriages off the track and down a four-meter slope.
00:44The Spanish Red Cross set up a help center in the town of Adamus near the crash site,
00:49offering assistance to emergency services and people seeking information.
00:53Members of Spain's Civil Guard and Civil Defense worked on site throughout the night.
