A high-speed train derailed and slammed into an oncoming service train near Adamuz in southern Spain, killing at least 21 people and injuring more than 100. The violent collision sent the second train off the tracks and down an embankment, triggering a major emergency response overnight.

Spain’s transport minister called the crash “really strange,” noting it occurred on a straight, newly renewed track. The driver was among the dead. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez cleared his schedule as the king and queen closely monitored rescue efforts.
