Dr Daniela Vecchio is head of mental health and addiction services at Fiona Stanley Hospital. She is the pioneer in establishing the first publicly funded gaming disorder clinic in Australia in 2022.
00:00In my day-to-day work as a psychiatrist, I started seeing young people harmed by their
00:11screen use and the devastating impact on their mental health. And families were asking for
00:24our help. So in 2022, I started the Gaming Disorder Clinic. This is the first clinic in a public hospital
00:36in Australia. Majority of the children are boys and what they have in common is that they have become
00:49very much socially isolated. They distance themselves from their family. They become very
00:57aggressive towards their parents and they become victims on occasions of online predators. So we
01:09provide education. We try to empower families and we try to reconnect children, adolescents,
01:19young adults with their families. In our clinic, we have seen over 300 children, but we know
01:29that there are many more who are in need. Just in Western Australia, and I think this is an
01:37underestimate. 22,000 teenagers who are at high risk of developing gaming disorder. We developed our expertise by collaborating with national, international experts, but also local agencies like Department of Education, because it is very important
02:05It is very important. This is not the work of just a solo individual. We need to work together. We can't go without the screen. This is a digital world. But what we need is digital literacy. And also we need to equip to make our children safer in the digital world.
02:33We need to work together.
