00:00Welcome to Roller Derby!
00:07Roller skates and bedazzled helmets.
00:09Sydney's town hall is being flipped into a roller derby track
00:13for a fusion of sport and theatre.
00:16It is a personal story for me.
00:17Mama Does Derby is based on the life that Ivy, my daughter,
00:21and I have had growing up.
00:23She says it's a show about intergenerational challenges
00:26and the feeling of being knocked down and getting back up.
00:30And it's the moment in time where your parents stop being your heroes,
00:34your gods, and they start being your triggers
00:37and you start to see them as fully formed human beings.
00:41The roller derby features skaters from Sydney's Inner West League.
00:45We've got skaters ranging from about 22 years old
00:48and all the way up to 71.
00:51All with a nod to horror films.
00:54It has a cover of violence and that's basically
00:57because it is a full contact sport,
00:59it is the most gentle and warm community ever.
01:02Inside town hall is one of the many parts of the CBD
01:04that's being transformed for the Sydney festival,
01:07which is celebrating its 50th year.
01:09We've got activity all the way from Blacktown to Barangaroo.
01:14This festival really spans across Sydney.
01:18Rolling with the punches of family dynamics.
