Almost 350 school students have swapped the classroom for the professional stage at the Canberra Theatre Centre. They've taken part in a novel program designed to embolden a new wave of young performers.

00:03We're not even asking much of you! Why can't you get better grades? Why can't you be a good friend?

00:09They're students with stories to tell, and now the stage on which to tell them.
00:14You get to make people laugh, you get to make people cry, and knowing it's yours is just the most
00:19exhilarating feeling in the world.
00:21The ACT UP program aims to inspire the next generation of performers.
00:30350 students from 19 schools have taken part this year.
00:34They get to create their own original 5-10 minute work based around a theme and stimulus material, and they
00:41bring it here to the Canberra Theatre Centre.
00:43From small ideas.
00:45What is it? It's a seed.
00:47Cultivated in the classroom, guided by the pros.
00:51That's gorgeous. So professional.
00:53And brought to life on stage.
00:55There is still life out there. They just don't want us to know it.
00:59For many of them, this is the first experience they have performing in a professional venue.
01:04The Playhouse Stage is one of the most beautiful stages in our country.
01:07It's been months of hard work.
01:11But worth it to experience the thrill of the spotlight.
01:15It's really surreal, like it's just that little bit of just like, this is amazing, this is like everything I
01:20want in life.
01:21And I actually get a chance to do it even if it's just like this once or twice.
01:24Some hope this small taste is just the start.
01:28And I really hope to one day go to West End or Broadway and be able to tell stories that
01:33I've always loved or even maybe make my own story.
