00:00In a cabin in the woods, a mother was reading a book to her two daughters.
00:04It was probably a horror novel.
00:06Just then...
00:17A widow once lived in a little cottage with a garden in front of it,
00:21in which grew two rose trees, one bearing white roses and the other red.
00:25She had two children, who were just like the two rose trees.
00:31One was called Snow White and the other Rose Red,
00:33and they were the sweetest and best children in the world,
00:36always diligent and always cheerful.
00:39But Snow White was quieter and more gentle than Rose Red.
00:43Rose Red loved to run about the fields and meadows
00:45and to pick flowers and catch butterflies.
00:48But Snow White sat at home with her mother and helped her in the household,
00:53or read aloud to her when there was no work to do.
00:55The two children loved each other so dearly
01:00that they always walked about hand in hand whenever they went out together.
01:04And when Snow White said,
01:06We will never desert each other.
01:08Rose Red answered,
01:10No, not as long as we live.
01:12And the mother added,
01:14Whatever one gets, she shall share with the other.
01:17They often roamed about in the woods gathering berries
01:20and no beast offered to hurt them.
01:21On the contrary, they came up to them in the most confiding manner.
01:26The little hare would eat a cabbage leaf from their hands.
01:28The deer grazed beside them.
01:30The stag would bound past them merrily,
01:33and the birds remained on the branches and sang to them with all their might.
01:36No evil ever befell them.
01:38If they tarried late in the wood and night overtook them,
01:41they lay down together on the moss and slept till morning.
01:44And their mother knew they were quite safe and never felt anxious about them.
01:48Once, when they had slept all night in the wood and had been wakened by the morning sun,
01:53they perceived a beautiful child in a shining white robe sitting close to their resting place.
01:58The figure got up, looked at them kindly, but said nothing, and vanished into the wood.
02:02And when they looked round about them,
02:04they became aware that they had slept quite close to a precipice,
02:07over which they would certainly have fallen
02:09had they gone on a few steps further in the darkness.
02:11And when they told their mother of their adventure,
02:13she said what they had seen must have been the angel that guards good children.
02:17Snow White and Rose Red kept their mother's cottage so beautifully clean and neat
02:21that it was a pleasure to go into it.
02:24In summer, Rose Red looked after the house,
02:27and every morning before her mother awoke,
02:28she placed a bunch of flowers before the bed.
02:31From each tree arose.
02:32In winter, Snow White lit the fire and put on the kettle,
02:35which was made of brass but so beautifully polished that it shone like gold.
02:39In the evening when the snowflakes fell, their mother said,
02:43Snow White, go and close the shutters.
02:46And they drew round the fire,
02:47while the mother put on her spectacles and read aloud from a big book,
02:50and the two girls listened and sat and spanned.
02:53One evening, as they sat thus cozily together,
02:56someone knocked at the door as though he desired admittance.
03:01The mother said,
03:02Rose Red hastened to unbar the door and thought she saw a poor man standing in the darkness outside.
03:14But it was no such thing, only a bear,
03:17who poked his thick black head through the door.
03:21Rose Red screamed aloud and sprang back in terror.
03:24The lamb began to bleat.
03:25The dove flapped its wings and Snow White ran and hid behind her mother's bed.
03:30But the bear began to speak and said,
03:32Don't be afraid.
03:34I won't hurt you.
03:35I'm half frozen and only wish to warm myself a little.
03:39My poor bear,
03:40lie down by the fire,
03:41only take care you don't burn your fur.
03:44Snow White and Rose Red,
03:46come out.
03:47The bear will do you no harm.
03:49He is a good, honest creature.
03:50So they both came out of their hiding places
03:53and gradually the lamb and dove drew near too
03:55and they all forgot their fear.
03:58The bear asked the children to beat the snow a little out of his fur
04:01and they fetched a brush and scrubbed him till he was dry.
04:04Then the beast stretched himself in front of the fire
04:06and growled quite happily and comfortably.
04:09The children soon grew quite at their ease with him
04:11and led their helpless guest a fearful life.
04:15They tugged his fur with their hands,
04:17put their small feet on his back
04:18and rolled him about here and there
04:20or took a hazel wand and beat him with it.
04:23And if he growled, they only laughed.
04:25The bear submitted to everything with the best possible good nature.
04:29Only when they went too far, he cried,
04:31Oh, children, spare my life.
04:33Snow White and Rose Red,
04:35don't beat your lover dead.
04:37When it was time to retire for the night
04:39and the others went to bed,
04:40the mother said to the bear,
04:42You can lie there on the hearth in heaven's name.
04:45It will be shelter for you from the cold and wet.
04:50As soon as day dawned, the children led him out
04:52and he trotted over the snow into the wood.
04:59From this time on, the bear came every evening at the same hour
05:03and lay down by the hearth
05:04and let the children play what pranks they liked with him.
05:07And they got so accustomed to him
05:09that the door was never shut
05:10till their black friend had made his appearance.
05:13When spring came and all outside was green,
05:16the bear said one morning to Snow White,
05:18Now I must go away
05:19and not return again the whole summer.
05:22Where are you going to, dear bear?
05:24asked Snow White.
05:26I must go to the wood
05:27and protect my treasure from the wicked dwarfs.
05:30In winter, when the earth is frozen hard,
05:33they are obliged to remain underground,
05:35for they can't work their way through.
05:37But now, when the sun has thawed and warmed the ground,
05:41they break through and come up above
05:43to spy the land and steal what they can.
05:46What once falls into their hands and into their caves
05:50is not easily brought back to life.
05:52Snow White was quite sad over their friend's departure,
05:55and when she unbarred the door for him,
05:57the bear, stepping out,
05:59caught a piece of his fur in the door knocker,
06:01and Snow White thought she caught sight
06:03of glittering gold beneath it,
06:05but she couldn't be certain of it.
06:07And the bear ran hastily away
06:08and soon disappeared behind the trees.
06:11A short time after this,
06:12the mother sent the children into the wood
06:14to collect faggots.
06:15They came in their wanderings upon a big tree
06:17which lay felled on the ground,
06:19and on the trunk among the long grass
06:21they noticed something jumping up and down.
06:23But what it was they couldn't distinguish.
06:25When they approached nearer,
06:26they perceived a dwarf with a wizened face
06:28and a beard a yard long.
06:30The end of the beard was jammed into a cleft of the tree,
06:32and the little man sprang about like a dog on a chain
06:35and didn't seem to know what he was to do.
06:37He glared at the girls with his fiery red eyes
06:40and screamed out,
06:41What are you standing there for?
06:43Can't you come and help me?
06:46What were you doing, little man?
06:49Asked Rose Red.
06:50You stupid, inquisitive goose!
06:52Yes, replied the dwarf.
06:54I wanted to split the tree
06:56in order to get little chips of wood for our kitchen fire.
07:00Those thick logs that serve to make fires
07:03for coarse, greedy people like yourselves
07:05quite burn up all the little food we need.
07:09I had successfully driven in the wedge,
07:12and all was going well.
07:14But the cursed wood was so slippery
07:16that it suddenly sprang out,
07:18and the tree closed up so rapidly
07:21that I had no time to take my beautiful white beard out.
07:25So here I am stuck fast,
07:27and I can't get away.
07:29And you silly, smooth-faced,
07:31milk-and-water girls just stand and laugh.
07:34Ooh, what wretches you are!
07:37The children did all in their power,
07:39but they couldn't get the beard out.
07:41It was wedged in far too firmly.
07:43I will run and fetch somebody,
07:45said Rose Red.
07:46Crazy blockheads, snapped the dwarf.
07:49What's the good of calling anyone else?
07:52You're already too, too many for me.
07:54Does nothing better occur to you than that?
07:57Don't be so impatient, said Snow White.
08:00I'll see you get help.
08:01And taking her scissors out of her pocket,
08:04she cut off the end of his beard.
08:07As soon as the dwarf felt himself free,
08:09he seized a bag full of gold,
08:10which was hidden among the roots of the tree,
08:12lifted it up, and muttered aloud,
08:15Curse these rude wretches,
08:17cutting off a piece of my splendid beard.
08:20With these words, he swung the bag over his back
08:23and disappeared without as much
08:24as looking at the children again.
08:26Shortly after this, Snow White and Rose Red
08:28went out to get a dish of fish.
08:29As they approached the stream,
08:31they saw something which looked like
08:32an enormous grasshopper springing toward the water,
08:35as if it were going to jump in.
08:37They ran forward and recognized
08:38their old friend the dwarf, asked Rose Red.
08:41Where are you going to?
08:42You're surely not going to jump into the water?
08:45I'm not such a fool, screamed the dwarf.
08:48Don't you see that cursed fish
08:49is trying to drag me in?
08:51The little man had been sitting on the bank fishing,
08:54when unfortunately,
08:55the wind had entangled his beard in the line.
08:57And when immediately afterward a big fish bit,
08:59the feeble little creature had no strength to pull it out.
09:02The fish had the upper fin
09:04and dragged the dwarf toward him.
09:06The girls came up just at the right moment,
09:08held him firm.
09:09Nothing remained but to produce the scissors
09:11and cut the beard,
09:12by which a small part of it was sacrificed.
09:15When the dwarf perceived what they were about,
09:16he yelled to them,
09:17Do you call that manners?
09:20You toadstools!
09:22To disfigure a fellow's face?
09:24It wasn't enough that you shortened my beard before,
09:27but you must now needs cut off the best bit of it.
09:32I can't appear like this before my own people.
09:35I wish you'd been in Jericho first.
09:37Then he fetched a sack of pearls
09:40that lay among the rushes,
09:41and without saying another word,
09:43he dragged it away and disappeared behind a stone.
09:45It happened that soon after this,
09:47the mother sent the two girls to the town
09:48to buy needles, thread, laces, and ribbons.
09:52Their road led over a heath
09:53where huge boulders of rock
09:55lay scattered here and there.
09:56While trudging along,
09:57they saw a big bird hovering in the air,
10:00circling slowly above them,
10:02but always descending lower
10:03till at last it settled on a rock
10:05not far from them.
10:06Immediately afterward,
10:07they heard a sharp, piercing cry.
10:09They ran forward and saw with horror
10:11that the eagle had pounced
10:12on their old friend the dwarf
10:14and was about to carry him off.
10:16The tender-hearted children
10:17seized hold of the little man
10:18and struggled so long with the bird
10:20that at last he let go his prey.
10:23When the dwarf had recovered from the first shock,
10:25he screamed in his screeching voice,
10:27Couldn't you have treated me more carefully?
10:30You have torn my thin little coat
10:32all to shreds.
10:33Useless, awkward hussies that you are.
10:37Then he took a bag of precious stones
10:38and vanished under the rocks into his cave.
10:42The girls were accustomed to his ingratitude
10:44and went on their way
10:45and did their business in town.
10:46The girls were accustomed to his ingratitude
10:48and went on their way
10:49and did their business in town.
10:51On their way home,
10:52as they were again passing the heath,
10:54they surprised the dwarf
10:55pouring out his precious stones
10:57on an open space,
10:58for he had thought no one would pass by
11:00at so late an hour.
11:01The evening sun shone on the glittering stones
11:04and they glanced and gleamed so beautifully
11:06that the children stood still
11:08and gazed on them.
11:09What are you standing there gaping for?
11:11Screamed the dwarf,
11:13and his ashen gray face
11:14became scarlet with rage.
11:16He was about to go off with these angry words
11:18when a sudden growl was heard
11:19and a black bear trotted out of the wood.
11:22The dwarf jumped up in great fright,
11:24but he hadn't time to reach his place of retreat,
11:26for the bear was already close to him.
11:28Then he cried in terror.
11:30Dear Mr. Bear,
11:32spare me.
11:33I'll give you all my treasure.
11:35Look at those beautiful, precious stones lying there.
11:39Spare my life.
11:41What pleasure would you get
11:42from a poor, feeble little fellow like me?
11:46You won't feel me between your teeth.
11:49There, lay hold of these two wicked girls.
11:52They will be a tender morsel for you,
11:55as fat as young quails.
11:57Eat them up for heaven's sake.
11:59But the bear,
12:00paying no attention to his words,
12:02gave the evil little creature
12:03one blow with his paw,
12:05and he never moved again.
12:07The girls had run away,
12:08but the bear called after them.
12:12Snow white and rose red.
12:13Don't be afraid.
12:15Wait, and I'll come with you.
12:16Then they recognized his voice
12:18and stood still.
12:19And when the bear was quite close to them,
12:21his skin suddenly fell off,
12:23and a beautiful man stood beside them,
12:24all dressed in gold.
12:26I am a king's son,
12:28and have been doomed
12:29by that unholy little dwarf
12:31who had stolen my treasure
12:32to roam about the woods
12:34as a wild bear
12:35till his death should set me free.
12:37Now he has got
12:38his well-merited punishment.
12:41Snow white married him,
12:42and rose red his brother,
12:44and they divided the great treasure
12:45the dwarf had collected
12:46in his cave between them.
12:48The old mother lived for many years
12:49peacefully with her children,
12:51and she carried the two rose trees with her,
12:54and they stood in front of her window,
12:55and every year they bore
12:57the finest red and white roses.
