00:00:00Rubens Barrichello, can he knock his teammate off?
00:00:02No, he is going to be second fastest.
00:00:04Michael Schumacher is the pole sitter.
00:00:06He's coming to the line.
00:00:07Let's see what Schumacher has for Fernando Alonso.
00:00:10P3, Alonso is on pole, and Renault rejoice.
00:00:14Rubens Barrichello has a chance of taking the pole here in Brazil
00:00:18in front of his hometown fans.
00:00:19He's going to come across the line.
00:00:21Yes!
00:00:22Ha-ha-ha!
00:00:23Now he's trying to go for a pole here at Imola.
00:00:26Practically the home from Brady.
00:00:27Yes!
00:00:2814,000ths of a second.
00:00:30He's had the last three poles here at Barcelona.
00:00:33He comes around.
00:00:35And he does it!
00:00:37Well, hello from the beautiful mountains of Austria.
00:00:59Welcome to coverage of final qualifying for the sixth round of the Formula One World Championship,
00:01:03the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:01:05I'm Rick DeBruy, joining me as always, David Hobbs and Steve Matchett,
00:01:08and the crowds are out today on an absolutely beautiful day in Austria, David.
00:01:13It is a beautiful day, and those mountains just look so inviting.
00:01:17I'd like to be in that camera position.
00:01:18Not at all.
00:01:20Way up there.
00:01:21That's my favorite position.
00:01:23Yeah, but you get a nice view of everything.
00:01:25Yeah, a great view.
00:01:26But I wanted a very strong seat, Gabelton.
00:01:29That's right.
00:01:29Just make sure you don't have to make a little bathroom break in the middle of the whole thing.
00:01:32All right, before we get to qualifying, we need to see what this track looks like.
00:01:35David, take us around the circuit with the Porsche TrackMan.
00:01:37Well, of course, set in the mountains at 2,000 feet, so pressure's down a little bit here.
00:01:41As you can see, it's pretty squared off three real drag strips.
00:01:45Actually, Castle Curve, where all the overtaking goes on.
00:01:47It's an uphill approach, difficult for the drivers to see, sitting low in the cars.
00:01:51Run downhill to the Remus Curve, and then right at the last minute, that goes uphill too.
00:01:55That's another difficult corner to see the apex.
00:01:57Another quick rush down to Gosser Curve, where Ralph Schumacher went off yesterday.
00:02:00As you can see, very tight entry, unwinds on the way out.
00:02:03Then the Nicky Lauda Curve, very steeply downhill, and the Powerhurst Curve, also downhill.
00:02:08Both left-handers putting a bit of strain on the right front tyre.
00:02:12Quick run down to Joachim Rint Curve, which is also a downhill curve,
00:02:15so you're not getting much help here from Canberra on the racetrack.
00:02:18And then the A1 Curve is very, very important, slippery this weekend,
00:02:21because that leads you on to that straight up to the Casper Curve, where the overtaking's going on.
00:02:25So you want to make a good run out of there.
00:02:27Real briefly, let's talk about the weather.
00:02:29We said it's very nice.
00:02:30It is indeed 68 degrees, track temperature of 91.
00:02:33Just a little humidity out there, very slight breeze, sunny, dry conditions,
00:02:38what we expect for today and the weekend.
00:02:40And the first man out on the track, Ralph Schumacher.
00:02:44That is because, don't forget, today's running is the reverse order of yesterday,
00:02:48and Ralphie had this little incident yesterday on his pre-qualifying lap,
00:02:53and got the thing crossed up, and quite honestly, didn't catch it early enough somehow.
00:02:57And then, of course, it went off into the gravel at the Gosser Curve there.
00:03:02Remus and Castle Curve have both had their gravel traps removed and replaced by asphalt,
00:03:06which obviously the drivers prefer.
00:03:08But as you can see, he got it all crossed up there, locked up that right front
00:03:11when he transferred the weight, trying to turn into the Gosser Curve.
00:03:14Ooh, and get it in the gravel, and unfortunately, it was beached.
00:03:18But Patrick Head, team chief, was not a happy camper.
00:03:22No, they said they could hear Patrick Head discussing that in the media centre from the pit lane.
00:03:27Yeah, 300 yards away.
00:03:28There you see that new asphalt at the exit of the Castle Curve,
00:03:31which everybody is using to their advantage.
00:03:33This is that downhill run to Remus.
00:03:36Then right at the end, just right here, it starts to go up sharply.
00:03:39So if you're sitting in that driver's seat, it's difficult to see that apex.
00:03:46A lot of elevation change here.
00:03:49It's almost even more so than it looks on television.
00:03:53Yes, this is a run down here.
00:03:54It's a downhill braking area.
00:03:55This is where he went off yesterday.
00:03:57Obviously not going to make the same mistake today.
00:04:00But, of course, today's times are the ones that count.
00:04:02Yesterday really just sets up the running order for today,
00:04:05and kind of everybody wants to be quick yesterday because they want to be last out today.
00:04:10Of course, Ralph has to be the track sweeper for today, unfortunately, first time around.
00:04:13Although this morning in the final practice session before this, he was fourth fastest.
00:04:21This is the Jochen Rint curve.
00:04:23Jochen Rint, of course, is the posthumous world champion in 1970.
00:04:26The only guy to do that, luckily.
00:04:30First qualifier comes across the line.
00:04:33Amazingly, Ralph Schumacher has the pole.
00:04:35There's Mario Tyson on the right of your picture, who's the chief engine man from BMW.
00:04:40He's got apparently a very happy camp at the moment with a number of issues with the Williams team
00:04:44because they feel their engine is one of the more, if not the most powerful engine out there.
00:04:49Yes, there is a lot of unrest in the BMW Williams camp.
00:04:53All right, now, Ralph Schumacher wasn't the only guy with a problem yesterday.
00:04:58This was Ralph Furman.
00:05:01Boy, he got on the grass at the A1 curve, a lot of people did, but he kept his foot in it.
00:05:04Unfortunately, he didn't do a very good job there of getting back on the track,
00:05:08but he did do a good job of making the mechanic work late, Steve.
00:05:12There's Eddie Jordan, not looking happy about that.
00:05:14Just a little bit of all the expense now, putting the car back together.
00:05:17The amazing thing was, though, that he actually finished officially the qualifying drive.
00:05:21He may have gone through a little askew, but that allowed him to start this qualifying session just ahead of Ralph Schumacher.
00:05:30And he's faster in the very first section.
00:05:34Wow, now, that is not a thing that the Williams camp's going to be happy to see on there, monitoring the pits.
00:05:39I'll tell you that.
00:05:41See Ralph Furman quicker than Ralph Schumacher in the first sector.
00:05:44In the warm-up just before the session that happened just 15 minutes before this started,
00:05:48Ralph Schumacher was second to last in the times.
00:05:51Now, that doesn't always equate to what's going to go on,
00:05:53but it almost seemed as if he was going around very tentatively.
00:05:56And I wonder if he was doing the same thing, just trying to make sure that he was going to get in the race.
00:06:01He's up a little bit there on Schumacher.
00:06:04I mean, down a bit.
00:06:05There's those final curves, Jochen Rint curves, still going downhill, pretty steeply.
00:06:14As you can see, the approach to this last corner is very steep.
00:06:16It is.
00:06:17That's going too wide, isn't it?
00:06:20Another foot to the left.
00:06:22We could have had a replay of what happened yesterday.
00:06:24Good Lord, he even lost a ton of time in the last two sectors.
00:06:27Lost a massive amount of time that time.
00:06:29He was up on the very first, up in the second,
00:06:32and he lost an awful lot in the final sector.
00:06:34Ralph Fuhrman now second fastest.
00:06:37We're going to take a quick break.
00:06:38Remember, you won't miss a second of qualifying action coming up.
00:06:41Both the minorities are going to make their runs, and, of course, everybody else.
00:06:44Stick around.
00:06:48Speed Channel's coverage of Formula One is brought to you by BMW.
00:06:52Visit your local BMW center for a test drive.
00:06:55BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
00:07:01Welcome back to Austria.
00:07:02Justin Wilson in the minority just starting his qualifying lap,
00:07:06and, as you can see, slower than Ralph Schumacher, the first guy who was out today.
00:07:11Justin Wilson, who finally finished his very first race in Formula One in Spain, finishing 11th.
00:07:16There's that gossip curve there.
00:07:20And you're right, the road really doesn't help at all there, does it?
00:07:23No.
00:07:23It drops away.
00:07:24Now, these curves coming up here.
00:07:27This is the Mickey Lauder curve.
00:07:29This, see the road falling away there.
00:07:31Must be difficult to set the car up there.
00:07:33You've got a lot of understeers.
00:07:34You go down that corner.
00:07:35This one, it flattens out, and the road helps you a little bit there.
00:07:38A little bit of a crest, and then there's a right-hand sweeper before this straight.
00:07:42So, there's a lot of stuff to set these cars up for.
00:07:47Wilson is the first lap champion of 2003.
00:07:52He's been averaging, improving his qualifying position,
00:07:55an average of six spots in every opening lap of this season.
00:08:00But, qualifying-wise, he's still going to be back in the pack.
00:08:04Boy, that's a long way off.
00:08:06That's a long way off Ralph Schumacher's time, which is a 1.10,
00:08:10which is probably going to be a fair way off pole anyway.
00:08:16Yeah, so that's a 1.14 for Wilson.
00:08:19Now, don't forget, yesterday's times are just a little bit unrepresented
00:08:23what we're going to get today,
00:08:24because today's qualifying is done with race fuel on board,
00:08:28and it depends where these guys want to strategize their stops.
00:08:32Because yesterday, Michael Schumacher did a 1.7 and change.
00:08:36I don't think we're going to see any 1.7s today.
00:08:38Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:08:41Sliding right through there, but very twitchy coming into there.
00:08:44Well, that's again what we saw yesterday under the heavy braking.
00:08:48The weight transfer goes across the car, and he really...
00:08:52I think something must have boosted.
00:08:54Yeah, I wonder whether or not the transmission broke there under braking,
00:08:57and all of a sudden the weight transfer got him.
00:08:59Yeah, there's something big happened there.
00:09:03Jasper Stoppen, who finished sixth here back in 2001.
00:09:06That seemed like a lifetime ago, now that you look at this,
00:09:08and the Minardi as he pulls off.
00:09:11No oil leaking out anywhere, is there?
00:09:13No.
00:09:13Let's have another look at that.
00:09:15Ooh, big cross up there.
00:09:19But it's not where you'd expect it.
00:09:21I mean, it's not...
00:09:22No, I wonder whether or not the transmission changed down two ratios instead of one, David.
00:09:27Oh, yeah.
00:09:28It was snatched.
00:09:30Could be.
00:09:30Yeah, I guess it broke a ratio by changing down two gears.
00:09:35Well, while they're taking a quick break, we are going to take a quick break as well.
00:09:38When we come back, we will have more from qualifying at Austria right here on Speed Channel.
00:09:43Welcome back to Speed Channel's coverage of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:09:56There you see Fernando Alonso sitting in the garage waiting to go out.
00:10:00Just a moment ago, Jasper Stoppen had to abandon his qualifying effort because of some problem,
00:10:04but right now it is Cristiano de Mana out on the track.
00:10:07And these guys, yesterday, Toyota, just were not on their game at all, were they?
00:10:14And Obey Anderson, the president of Toyota Racing, said, you know,
00:10:20really, we don't really know what it was.
00:10:22We just didn't get it right.
00:10:25The setup just didn't work for us.
00:10:27Because they've got a very powerful engine, the Toyota,
00:10:29and it wasn't very quick down the straights compared to the Ferrari,
00:10:32and it still lost out on the corner, so they had the worst for both worlds.
00:10:36They obviously had too much drag on the thing, but they obviously didn't have the town force right.
00:10:40So he's doing 186 miles an hour.
00:10:41That's a mile an hour slower than Ralph Schumacher went,
00:10:45but he was quicker in that first sector than Ralph Schumacher.
00:10:48So he'll no doubt be fairly happy with that.
00:10:51De Mana lost it again in that second sector.
00:10:54De Mana was 19th fastest in the first session this morning.
00:10:57He was 16th fastest in the second session.
00:10:59In the warm-up just before this, he was 15th fastest,
00:11:02so he's definitely struggling with this.
00:11:04But he's also never been to this track before.
00:11:06In fact, he had never even been to Austria until he flew in the other day just before the race.
00:11:15Second fastest, though, although half a second slower than the BMW Williams.
00:11:18There is Obey Anderson we're talking about.
00:11:24And again, he doesn't look too...
00:11:25He always looks fairly impassive, but he doesn't look too happy at all, does he?
00:11:31Especially after last year.
00:11:33There was so much potential shown last year, and they just haven't lived up to it this year.
00:11:35He's running a bit wide.
00:11:40This is that A1 curve, which caught so many people out yesterday.
00:11:44Yeah.
00:11:45We had Michael Schumacher making a big wide sweep through there even,
00:11:48and an amazing twitch on his qualifying run coming off the A1 curve.
00:11:53A couple of engineers about pit stop strategy and fuel strategy to tomorrow.
00:12:01Most people thinking it's going to be a two-stop race.
00:12:04So about 55 kilos, 60 kilos of fuel, 120 pounds worth of fuel on board the car today.
00:12:10So take that into consideration with the qualifying times.
00:12:13There's Olivier Panis, who's getting ready for his run,
00:12:17who's been quicker this weekend than Cristiano de Mara, but not much.
00:12:21Well, coming up tomorrow, of course, we're going to be bringing you live coverage of the Austin Grand Prix.
00:12:26In fact, our live coverage will begin at 7.30 in the morning, Eastern Time, with the Acura Pre-Race Show.
00:12:31As always, it'll feature Peter Windsor.
00:12:33Peter's going to be previewing the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix
00:12:36and be giving us all the latest news from the paddock.
00:12:39Once again, that's tomorrow, starting at 7.30 in the morning, East Coast Time, 4.30 for all you West Coast folks,
00:12:45and that is only right here on Speed.
00:12:47A pretty big crowd turned out.
00:12:52What's the qualifying today?
00:12:53Obviously, as you can see, the weather is beautiful.
00:12:56Fair old breeze blowing, which is probably affecting these cars quite badly on some of these turns.
00:13:02And obviously keeping the temperature pretty reasonable.
00:13:05As I said before, we're a couple of thousand feet up here.
00:13:09And we can see the snow on the peaks not so far away.
00:13:12Next up is going to be the birthday boy, Heinz-Herald Frensen.
00:13:16Tomorrow is his 36th birthday.
00:13:20Ooh.
00:13:22Old Coop.
00:13:23That's tomorrow, but this is what happened yesterday with Heinz-Herald.
00:13:28This was in the morning practice.
00:13:30That's the A1 corner again.
00:13:32Goes right up onto that new.
00:13:33This used to be gravel last year, so he's no doubt very glad it's not gravel at the moment.
00:13:37For some reason or other, he didn't take that little road back.
00:13:39He decided to go up front with the grass.
00:13:40I'm going to give the mechanics a little extra work in pulling out some grass out of the 5-5s.
00:13:46Here he comes.
00:13:48Out of the Gossip Curve.
00:13:51Down to the Nicky Lauder Curve.
00:13:54This one must be a pig to set the car up for because you're predominantly a right-hand circuit.
00:13:59And you've got these two left-handers in there, which are quite high speed.
00:14:02And that first one going downhill there with the road falling away from you must be a bit of a set-up nightmare
00:14:07because it's quite a couple of quick corners leading onto this long, quick straight down to the Ockenring Curve.
00:14:12You've got to get them right because you can lose a lot of time through there,
00:14:15which is what we've seen so far.
00:14:16Practically everybody's been slower through that second sector than Ralph Schumacher was.
00:14:21Kijel Frensen finally starts the lap and Sauber, once again, I mentioned last race.
00:14:30You know, after last year, this has been a very quiet team.
00:14:32They just haven't seemed to have done an awful lot.
00:14:34Well, they always keep a very low profile.
00:14:37Completely opposite of Jordan.
00:14:38Eddie Jordan, of course, always out for a party and always trying to play up his team's hope.
00:14:44Well, Peter Sauber, very, very conservative guy.
00:14:47You hear very little about them.
00:14:49Well, of course, they're Swiss teams.
00:14:51They're only just over the border from their home country.
00:14:54So there's no doubt a lot of Sauber and Heinz Hauer friends and fans here.
00:15:00But they're certainly committed to the sport.
00:15:02I mean, that new wind tunnel is like $35, $40 million worth of wind tunnel they're having built.
00:15:08And that'll fit two full-size cars in it.
00:15:10And technology's always been their specialty.
00:15:13Now they lost Heinz Hauer Frensen, who was up in the first sector, lost something in the second.
00:15:20Yeah, I think, bearing in mind that the guys are very restricted of what they can do with the aerodynamics before the start of the race,
00:15:27I think these guys have had to trim the aero off the car to optimize the overtaking possibilities during the race.
00:15:36And that is compromising them through the Nickelodeon curve and the power horse curve.
00:15:42So Frensen is third fastest.
00:15:43Ralph Schumacher is still the fastest guy in the day.
00:15:45He was the first man out there.
00:15:48The question is, how long is his time going to hold up?
00:15:50We'll be back with more from Austria right after this.
00:15:52Welcome back to Speed Channel's coverage of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:16:01Next guy on the track, Olivier Panisse.
00:16:04A little bit of that black rubber on there.
00:16:06Ooh.
00:16:06Now I've just done a couple of calculations looking at fuel load and pole time from last year, which is 1.08.
00:16:16These guys are running about 55, 60 kilos of fuel for a two-stop strategy.
00:16:21We expect them to be about 2.2 seconds slower than last year.
00:16:25Well, Ralph Schumacher's time is 10.2, which is spot on.
00:16:282.2 seconds slower than what pole is.
00:16:30So I'm guessing a two-stop strategy there.
00:16:44And he's still waiting to score his first points this year.
00:16:47In fact, he's only finished one race.
00:16:49Quickest so far on the first two sectors.
00:16:51So this could put him at the top of the timetables, albeit briefly.
00:16:56But he was 189 miles now through the trap.
00:17:06All right, here comes the Toyota.
00:17:08Can he knock Ralph Schumacher off the pole?
00:17:10Nope, doesn't do it.
00:17:11Everybody seems to lose in that third section.
00:17:13Boy, they lose badly.
00:17:17He does knock Christiana D'Amata down a spot.
00:17:20So right now it's Ralph Schumacher, Olivier Panisse in one and two,
00:17:23and Christiana D'Amata in third, third fastest for the day so far.
00:17:27And this third sector has been very slippy all weekend.
00:17:32And I wouldn't be surprised if these guys are just making sure they want to qualify.
00:17:36They don't want to screw up on that last corner down on the A1 there.
00:17:40I think probably, if anything, backing off a little bit there to make sure that they're on the grid.
00:17:44All right, here's the young man of the year, 21-year-old Fernando Alonso,
00:17:49the youngest pole sitter ever in the history of Formula One.
00:17:54And a very strong race two weeks ago in Spain.
00:17:57I mean, he finished just a handful of seconds behind Michael Schumacher
00:18:01and beat Rubens Barrichello fair and square.
00:18:04And, of course, Rubens Barrichello and Schumacher with a brand-new Ferrari.
00:18:08And there he is, three turns up.
00:18:12But is this a Renault track, Steve, with that engine?
00:18:15Renault say do not expect us to have anything like the performance that we had at Barcelona.
00:18:20The aerodynamics will help, but they just have not got the grunt in the lump.
00:18:23That's what the team are saying.
00:18:26But he did 188 miles an hour through the speed trap, which is right up there,
00:18:30so not that far off.
00:18:32Whoa!
00:18:33Yeah!
00:18:33Well, that'll do it.
00:18:34And Fernando Alonso, remember, with this single shot at qualifying,
00:18:38has blown the lap.
00:18:41Guess who's going to be starting from the back of the pack?
00:18:43That's that downhill left-hander that got him.
00:18:47Yeah.
00:18:47Well, Renault voicing their opinion of the situation there.
00:18:51I don't need to tell you what they were saying.
00:18:52No.
00:18:55No.
00:18:56What a shame.
00:18:57Just there.
00:18:58Just steps out on him there, doesn't it?
00:19:01Try to catch it, but...
00:19:03I would say if he's doing 188 down the straight,
00:19:05they've taken a lot of wing off that car,
00:19:07because that's the quickest he's done on the straight all weekend.
00:19:09They took too much wing off it, and it...
00:19:12Look at it.
00:19:13It's the back end that stepped out, not the front.
00:19:15Now, remember what happened to Kimi Räikkönen in Spain,
00:19:17where Räikkönen had the bad lap,
00:19:20didn't qualify well in it,
00:19:21but at the starting of the back of the grid,
00:19:23and as a result, ran into the back of a stalled Jaguar.
00:19:26Can you give me an exact quote of what those guys were saying?
00:19:34No, I don't think we need to go into that one too far.
00:19:36So, Fernando Alonso goes off.
00:19:39He finished his lap, apparently,
00:19:42so I guess that will give him the opportunity.
00:19:44Why would he finish his lap, though?
00:19:45That's the question.
00:19:46I guess he feels the car is ready, incapable.
00:19:49Seemed to me at that point,
00:19:50you might as well bring it in, work on it, check it out.
00:19:52You never know if any damage was done.
00:19:55A situation, just to keep updated,
00:19:57with Jost of Stappen,
00:19:59fourth and fifth gear ratio is broken in the transmission.
00:20:02Ah, that makes sense.
00:20:03Exactly what Steve Matchett said.
00:20:05Sort of predicted.
00:20:07Nick Heidefelt up on everybody in the first sector
00:20:10by nearly three-tenths, which is good,
00:20:14but they all lose it in the last two...
00:20:16Oh, oh, oh!
00:20:17He lost a bit there.
00:20:19He went in wide there, locked her up.
00:20:22It's a horrible corner, that, isn't it?
00:20:24You can see the backhand gets all loose.
00:20:27Well, it's a very steep downhill.
00:20:28It doesn't look on the telly,
00:20:30but it's quite a steep downhill.
00:20:33Look at that.
00:20:33Wow, seven-tenths faster.
00:20:35Nick Heidefelt having a really good run.
00:20:37So much for losing on that corner.
00:20:39Yeah.
00:20:40Now, once again, it's this last section
00:20:42where everybody's had a difficult time
00:20:44trying to take on Ralph Schumacher.
00:20:45Went through here so quickly.
00:20:47Nick Heidefelt in the Sauber.
00:20:49Let's see how he's going to do.
00:20:50He grabs it by half a second.
00:20:54Now, that is good.
00:20:57Well, I don't want to take anything away from Sauber,
00:21:00but is that a three-stop fuel strategy?
00:21:02If so, you know, we're looking at about 15 kilos of fuel difference.
00:21:08Ah, fuel strategy and qualifying.
00:21:10What does it all mean?
00:21:11We're going to take a brief break.
00:21:13We'll come back with more from Austria.
00:21:15A very happy Sauber crew.
00:21:23Meanwhile, the Renault guys are hoping that Yarno truly
00:21:26can bring them more joy than Fernando Alonso did just a moment ago.
00:21:30Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head of that three-stopper
00:21:32because he's nearly two seconds quicker than his teammate,
00:21:34like Carl Frensen,
00:21:35and there's no way that Nick Heidefelt's two seconds quicker.
00:21:38Well, I don't think so.
00:21:39About 15 kilos to convert it to pounds.
00:21:42What makes it easier is like 30 pounds of ballast difference.
00:21:47That's quite a difference.
00:21:50Well, Yarno truly not bringing a lot of joy right off the bat.
00:21:53The first section slower.
00:21:55But it's still quicker than Ralf Schumacher,
00:21:57so he could be in second spot.
00:22:01I was going to try and clarify the situation with aerodynamics
00:22:04when we're thinking about trimming the wings
00:22:05and they take aerodynamic performance away from the car during this session.
00:22:09The teams are not allowed to adjust the rear wing.
00:22:13As soon as this session is over, they have to go to park for May.
00:22:15They can only trim the front wing,
00:22:17and they cannot change any physical components on the wing.
00:22:20They're only allowed to adjust the angle of it.
00:22:21So they're very restricted to what they can do.
00:22:24And in the race, you need to be able to overtake.
00:22:28And to do that, to optimize the straight-line speed,
00:22:30you have to take the arrow off.
00:22:33They're really cool between a rock and a hard place.
00:22:35It's all about setting up for the race, yeah.
00:22:37Yarno comes across the line,
00:22:38second fastest ahead of Ralf Schumacher,
00:22:40but behind Nick Heidfeld.
00:22:42And not far behind either.
00:22:45Just over a tenth.
00:22:48Fabio's shaking his head.
00:22:50I think he wanted a little bit more, obviously.
00:22:54He did almost exactly the same straight-line speed as his teammate, 188.
00:23:03And these guys are running a new version of their engine in this race.
00:23:07We know that.
00:23:08They wouldn't tell me what the components were that they changed inside.
00:23:12They said they've changed some internal components.
00:23:14We do have some more horsepower.
00:23:16We have made an advantage,
00:23:17but they wouldn't go into it any more than that.
00:23:20Well, do you think it's one of these things
00:23:22when they're pointing to the engine
00:23:24and they're so close in being a contender in the championship,
00:23:27this is one of the things where you just pretty much
00:23:28throw everything you've got at it and make it work.
00:23:31By the way, don't forget to stick around after qualifying
00:23:33because we'll be bringing you live coverage
00:23:35of the third round of the International Formula 3000 Championship.
00:23:39By the way, American Townsend Belt, he is starting on the second row.
00:23:43Best start ever for an American in F3000.
00:23:45In fact, we're going to see if he can turn that into a podium finish.
00:23:48And that is coming up at 9.30 Eastern Time
00:23:50right after this qualifying program right here on Speed.
00:23:54That is a great crowd for qualifying.
00:24:00It is.
00:24:02You see in the big yellow
00:24:04because next up is Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:24:07It's interesting.
00:24:08Fisichella has only scored points in one race this year,
00:24:11but he won it.
00:24:12Brazil.
00:24:13If you're going to do it, do it right.
00:24:14That's right.
00:24:17Nick Heitfeld is on the pole right now.
00:24:19Behind him, Jarno Trulli.
00:24:21Jarno Trulli, regrettably, does not have a great record.
00:24:24Here in Austria.
00:24:25He's done the race.
00:24:27This will be his seventh try.
00:24:29He's only finished it twice in tenth and seventh spot.
00:24:33So poor old Jarno looking for better days
00:24:36for the Austrian Grand Prix this year, no doubt.
00:24:40That's a great shot.
00:24:42Look at the lower element of the rear wing, the end plate.
00:24:44See how they just tucked in a little bit right down the bottom there
00:24:47and there's just a slight fin
00:24:49on the bottom of the end plates on the rear wing.
00:24:51They spent $48 million developing that four-degree angle difference right there.
00:24:56You can imagine if they didn't have that.
00:24:58There'd be so much drag,
00:24:59they wouldn't be able to drive down the end of the pit lane.
00:25:01It would be a horrible thing to drive.
00:25:03David Coulthard sitting in the car waiting to go out.
00:25:05Oh, a little change here.
00:25:08And the last chance to figure out.
00:25:09See, these guys, I think these guys,
00:25:11they're looking like they're running more aero.
00:25:13And I think they've been looking at that second time
00:25:15in the middle section, David,
00:25:17when we're looking about the Nicky Lauder curve,
00:25:19those two left-handers and the old Gerhard Berger curve.
00:25:22And I think Ferrari thinking,
00:25:23you know, we need to be able to put a little bit more downforce on there.
00:25:26If we can claw a couple of tenths back,
00:25:28you can put us on pole.
00:25:30It was Barrichello who was fastest after the second practice,
00:25:33although Michael Schumacher was fastest
00:25:35in the first session this morning.
00:25:37It's a little kick up here that makes it so difficult
00:25:53for the driver to see the apex.
00:25:58Just slightly faster than Nick Heifeld,
00:26:00and I mean just slightly.
00:26:04Well, this is a run down to Gosser.
00:26:08Steep run down here.
00:26:09This last bit of the road falls away very steeply.
00:26:11It does.
00:26:14Air quick in the Renaults at 189.
00:26:17All right, let's see the second section.
00:26:23Oh, close.
00:26:25Just lost a little bit, but not much.
00:26:26By the way, we hear that Ford is interested in helping out Jordan
00:26:29with some of the chassis developments.
00:26:32Dipping into the pot to perhaps help out this team.
00:26:35All right, let's see how well he does.
00:26:38Yeah, this is going to be really nip and tuck between him and Trulli for that.
00:26:41Oh, Wiggles right there.
00:26:42It goes through the last section.
00:26:46Ah.
00:26:48Lost about three-tenths of a second, but he's third fastest,
00:26:51and that will put him ahead of Ralph Schumacher.
00:26:53So Nick Heifeld is still the fastest runner out there.
00:26:56Then it's Jarno Trulli.
00:26:57Then it's that yellow car belonging to this guy right here, Eddie Jordan.
00:27:02Giancarlo Fisichella comes up third.
00:27:04We'll be back after this.
00:27:12Welcome back.
00:27:13Eddie Jordan yelling at his driver.
00:27:15Come on, boy.
00:27:15Come on.
00:27:16Do a little better.
00:27:16That last little wiggle there coming off the A1 got in there.
00:27:22I think otherwise he probably would have been second.
00:27:25Now we're on board with Antonio Pizzonia, the Jaguar driver,
00:27:29who's sort of been hanging on to his job,
00:27:30but been guaranteed now until the end of the year,
00:27:32which must be a real confidence booster for him.
00:27:35I know they wanted to get rid of him.
00:27:37At least he's employed.
00:27:38At least he's still employed.
00:27:39His teammates call him Pizza Man.
00:27:43Back in Formula 3000, he used to call him Jungle Boy.
00:27:45Call him anything you want, but he is still a Jaguar driver,
00:27:48and that's really important to him this year.
00:27:50Now his best qualifying so far this year has been a 15th.
00:27:57I have to say the car has been transformed, really,
00:28:01from what they were racing last year.
00:28:02The R3 was an absolute disaster, a real pig.
00:28:06This car is much, much better, much improved.
00:28:09Don't cost you.
00:28:10Don't cost you.
00:28:10Don't cost you.
00:28:14Guy responsible for it, really, Malcolm Oslo,
00:28:17who's the ex-BAR designer.
00:28:19Well, if he gets these last two corners right,
00:28:21he could end up fourth.
00:28:23There's some quick runners to go yet,
00:28:25including his teammate.
00:28:27That's good.
00:28:29Nice and clean across the line.
00:28:30He gained some and finishes third.
00:28:32Actually, that was a very quick third sector.
00:28:36Boy, and that knocks Ralph Schumacher back another notch.
00:28:40Oh, dear.
00:28:40The BMW people must be, uh...
00:28:43Yeah, get well soon, Grant.
00:28:46We don't know who Grant...
00:28:47Who's Grant?
00:28:48Don't know.
00:28:50We assume Steve knows all these guys.
00:28:52I don't know Grant.
00:28:53For all we know, it could be the guy at the local pub.
00:28:55It could be.
00:28:56I'm sure he is.
00:28:57More than likely he is, yeah.
00:29:02All right, it's McLaren time.
00:29:03Kimi Raikkonen.
00:29:05Kimi Raikkonen, who last, two weeks ago,
00:29:07went off on his qualifying lap
00:29:09and started at the back,
00:29:10as we saw with his artist's results,
00:29:12which you mentioned earlier.
00:29:14He still leads the World Championship,
00:29:16but, oh, how much nicer it would have been
00:29:18to have gotten some points in Spain.
00:29:19He's up quarter of a second there
00:29:20on Heidfeld.
00:29:25Same speed as Ralph Schumacher, 191.
00:29:31A bit slower there.
00:29:35Handled the gospel down to the downhill curves.
00:29:38They were pretty confident yesterday.
00:29:40The positions were nothing very impressive,
00:29:42but the team, the drivers...
00:29:44Still quicker in that second sector,
00:29:45so it looks like Kimi Raikkonen
00:29:47and he's going to annex that top spot,
00:29:50certainly for the time being,
00:29:51but there's a lot of quick runners to go, yeah.
00:29:53Yeah.
00:30:00Got the blue filter on his onboard.
00:30:03Kimi Raikkonen comes across the line
00:30:05and he is fastest.
00:30:07So he was really quick in that last sector
00:30:09with those two difficult corners,
00:30:11the Rint curve and the A1 curve.
00:30:14All downhill corners.
00:30:15Very difficult.
00:30:17So Kimi Raikkonen, the fastest qualifier
00:30:20for the time being here in Austria.
00:30:22We're going to take a quick break.
00:30:23When we come back, though,
00:30:24it's his teammate, David Coulthard,
00:30:25who hits the track.
00:30:40Welcome back to Speed's coverage
00:30:42of the Austrian Grand Prix qualifying,
00:30:44and it's the other McLaren.
00:30:45Kimi Raikkonen qualified a moment ago.
00:30:47This one belongs to David Coulthard.
00:30:52And he's up by two tenths on his teammate.
00:30:56He's slower in the first section.
00:30:57Up in time, yes.
00:30:58He's slower.
00:31:00David has a great finishing record here,
00:31:02but his qualifying has kind of been so-so
00:31:04over the years.
00:31:06He won here two years ago.
00:31:08He had four consecutive second-place finishes.
00:31:11But if you look at his qualifying
00:31:12over the last few years,
00:31:14last year he was eighth,
00:31:15the year before that he was seventh.
00:31:16He had a couple of second qualifying spots,
00:31:19and then there was a 14th and a 10th before that.
00:31:22And there he's more than half a second off
00:31:24of his teammates' time.
00:31:26Are we talking different strategies here, Steve?
00:31:29I was going to say,
00:31:29it could be different field strategies.
00:31:30It could well be.
00:31:31That's going to be the question all year long,
00:31:34isn't it?
00:31:35And we'll never, ever know the answer.
00:31:38Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:31:39That's going to knock him.
00:31:40Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:31:41He'll be about seventh or eighth,
00:31:42probably, I think,
00:31:43with that little episode there.
00:31:45How about ninth?
00:31:46Even worse.
00:31:47There's DuPasquier from Michelin there.
00:31:50I was in my tyres.
00:31:51You're not supposed to do this.
00:31:52My tyres were fine.
00:31:53The driver was wrong.
00:31:54Four to the day of four and fine for the asphalt.
00:31:56They're not good on the grass.
00:31:58Ouch.
00:31:59Yeah.
00:32:00Woo.
00:32:01Yeah, it all went wrong there
00:32:02when he clipped the apex.
00:32:04Because these guys use those apex curves,
00:32:06and you've got to get it right
00:32:07if you're going to do it.
00:32:09So he ends up behind Cristiano de Mata.
00:32:11Oh, yeah.
00:32:12That face says it all right there.
00:32:14Yeah, well, Kimi Räikkönen
00:32:15wasn't going to be stuck near the back this time,
00:32:17so he got in a good qualifying time
00:32:19because he learned his lesson last week,
00:32:21or two weeks ago.
00:32:22All right, now it is Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:32:28He was quick.
00:32:29He was quick this morning
00:32:30in the pre-practice
00:32:32and all that sort of stuff, so...
00:32:33Yeah, the little warm-up session
00:32:34they had just before,
00:32:35he was the fastest guy.
00:32:36In the second practice today,
00:32:39he was second only
00:32:41to Rubens Barrichello.
00:32:42It's only his third time here, of course,
00:32:43don't forget.
00:32:44So he finished third last year.
00:32:46And not quite faster than Kimi Räikkönen.
00:32:50Think about this.
00:32:51Last year, he got five straight poles,
00:32:54and this year,
00:32:55Ralph has out-qualified him
00:32:56three of the five times,
00:32:57although Mike Gutt says
00:32:58he's going to get him this time.
00:33:01Track temperature has dropped a little bit.
00:33:03It's now sitting at 82 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:33:05It should be warm enough
00:33:08for these tyres to work fine.
00:33:10And the BMW guys,
00:33:11no doubt,
00:33:13happy with their engine.
00:33:14Both him and Ralph Schumacher
00:33:16doing 191 through the speed trap.
00:33:18Still the fastest time out there.
00:33:22Downs those last two tricky corners.
00:33:24Oh, this could be pretty good.
00:33:30Comes across the line,
00:33:31and...
00:33:32And second.
00:33:34Knocks Nick Hydefield back.
00:33:35He's behind Kimi Räikkönen.
00:33:37Mario Tyson smiling at that
00:33:38on the left of the screen there.
00:33:40Is that who you were looking at, Mario?
00:33:44There were other people in the picture.
00:33:45There were.
00:33:46You weren't distracted at all.
00:33:47Very impressed.
00:33:49So not bad.
00:33:50It's Kimi Räikkönen and McLaren
00:33:52who is fastest so far,
00:33:53but Juan Pablo Montoya
00:33:54in the Williams BMW
00:33:56is second fastest.
00:33:58So Michelin
00:33:59for one and two at the moment.
00:34:06So once again,
00:34:07we're going to take another quick break.
00:34:09When we come back,
00:34:11it's the big runners.
00:34:12A couple of BARs,
00:34:13a couple of Ferraris,
00:34:14and a Jaguar yet to come
00:34:15here on Speed.
00:34:19Welcome back to qualifying
00:34:20for the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:34:22Jean-Tot sitting there
00:34:23waiting to find out
00:34:24how his two drivers
00:34:25are going to do.
00:34:26Neither Ferrari
00:34:26has yet to go out.
00:34:28Ross Braant contemplating
00:34:29his fuel load.
00:34:32And that's the guy
00:34:33who's on the pole right now,
00:34:34Kimi Räikkönen in the McLaren.
00:34:35And Fernando Alonso,
00:34:39if you just joined us,
00:34:40he is last on the grid
00:34:41because he went way off.
00:34:46Yes, from jump to jump.
00:34:48Look at that.
00:34:48Did you see that?
00:34:49John Todd not wanted to be seen
00:34:51yawning on the television
00:34:51because he knows he's on the television
00:34:53because he can see the monitor
00:34:54just like we can.
00:34:55Heaven forbid.
00:34:55Either that or he was relaying
00:34:57some secret comment
00:34:58about his wing.
00:34:59And also I should mention
00:34:59Jace Verstappen
00:35:00is actually even behind
00:35:01Fernando Alonso
00:35:02because Verstappen
00:35:03didn't even finish his lap.
00:35:05The truck temperature
00:35:05continues to go down.
00:35:07We were at 91 degrees Fahrenheit
00:35:08at the start of this session.
00:35:10A couple of minutes ago
00:35:11to drop down to 82,
00:35:12as I said.
00:35:12And now again,
00:35:13it's down to 80.6.
00:35:15So this could well be playing
00:35:17to a degree.
00:35:19If it doesn't continue
00:35:20to drop too much,
00:35:22it might create
00:35:22a little more engine power
00:35:24that these guys
00:35:24are struggling with.
00:35:25All right,
00:35:27it's BAR time.
00:35:28Both of the BARs
00:35:29did very well yesterday.
00:35:31Both Jensen Button
00:35:32and Jacques Villeneuve,
00:35:33although Villeneuve
00:35:34just edged Button,
00:35:35which is why Button
00:35:36is going out first
00:35:38ahead of his teammate today.
00:35:41And don't forget,
00:35:41this morning
00:35:42in the second practice session,
00:35:43Villeneuve was sixth fastest.
00:35:46And Button,
00:35:47he was 14th.
00:35:53Michael Schumacher.
00:35:56Getting ready to go out.
00:36:01All the attention
00:36:01focused on him.
00:36:02He would definitely
00:36:03like to forget
00:36:04this entire race
00:36:05from last year.
00:36:05Yes, officially he won,
00:36:07but it turned into
00:36:09a huge embarrassment.
00:36:09And that is the only time
00:36:09he's ever won here.
00:36:10He hasn't got
00:36:11a stellar record here.
00:36:12So when you think about it,
00:36:13he's never won
00:36:14on his own merits.
00:36:15Not here, no.
00:36:17He was third in 98,
00:36:20second in 01,
00:36:22and first last year,
00:36:25although he would
00:36:25have been second there.
00:36:26He hasn't qualified
00:36:27well here either.
00:36:28He was on the pole
00:36:29here in 01,
00:36:29that's it.
00:36:30Otherwise,
00:36:30he's been between
00:36:31third and ninth.
00:36:3423-year-old Jensen
00:36:35Button out on the track
00:36:36right now.
00:36:37He wants to
00:36:37have a nice little
00:36:39performance
00:36:40so he can forget
00:36:40about what happened
00:36:41at Spain
00:36:41in that little incident
00:36:42with David Coulthard.
00:36:44Well, here he goes
00:36:45onto the main straight
00:36:47around the A1.
00:36:49Crosses the timing beam.
00:36:51Hunt has got a bit
00:36:51more horsepower
00:36:52this week,
00:36:53a little bit more
00:36:54than before,
00:36:55so they're cranking
00:36:56out more and more
00:36:56horsepower,
00:36:57but the engine
00:36:59needs to be
00:37:00a bit lighter yet.
00:37:02Is that really
00:37:02a turn right there?
00:37:04No one pays
00:37:05any attention
00:37:05to the curb markings,
00:37:06anything.
00:37:07It's how wide
00:37:08can I possibly go
00:37:09to make it work?
00:37:09Slightly slower
00:37:11in the first section,
00:37:11you see a little
00:37:12wiggle right there.
00:37:12A little bobble
00:37:13into the Remus curve.
00:37:14Now, these guys,
00:37:16for the most part
00:37:17this season,
00:37:17have been running
00:37:17three-stop strategies,
00:37:19so let's see
00:37:20whether or not
00:37:20that's going to
00:37:21play out today
00:37:22if they're working
00:37:22on that same strategy
00:37:23again.
00:37:23Remember,
00:37:24there's about
00:37:2450 kilos,
00:37:2530 pounds
00:37:26weight difference
00:37:27between a two
00:37:28and a three-stop
00:37:28fuel load
00:37:29that these guys
00:37:30are going to be
00:37:30carrying.
00:37:32So he was
00:37:33almost as fast
00:37:34as the two
00:37:34Williams cars,
00:37:35and he looked
00:37:36quick through
00:37:36that gossip curve.
00:37:37The incident
00:37:37to see what
00:37:38his second sector
00:37:38time.
00:37:39No, he's still
00:37:39up on it,
00:37:40but not much.
00:37:41They're good times,
00:37:42so he could end
00:37:44up second.
00:37:47He's so far
00:37:47absolutely matching
00:37:49Montoya to the
00:37:50thousands.
00:37:51So if he gets
00:37:52through these
00:37:52last two corners,
00:37:53well, he could
00:37:54smack second spot.
00:37:55All right, last turn
00:37:56coming on.
00:37:56Whoa, whoa, whoa,
00:37:57a bit wide.
00:37:58Ah, it's lost
00:37:59him a little bit.
00:38:00Probably lost it
00:38:00right there.
00:38:01And he's fifth
00:38:02fastest.
00:38:03Lost a substantial
00:38:04amount.
00:38:04A lot there.
00:38:05He's behind
00:38:06Jarno Trulli ahead
00:38:07and Jarno Trulli ahead
00:38:07of Pisonia.
00:38:08Boy, he was doing
00:38:09so well.
00:38:10He was.
00:38:11He was right
00:38:12there.
00:38:13I think these
00:38:13guys, you know,
00:38:14they get so
00:38:15psyched up,
00:38:15they want to put
00:38:16a great lap
00:38:16time in, and
00:38:17they're just
00:38:17pushing too
00:38:18hard here,
00:38:18and if you do
00:38:19so, whoops,
00:38:20there it is.
00:38:21And this,
00:38:22because of the
00:38:22way qualifying is
00:38:23done this year,
00:38:24this is the only
00:38:25shot you have at
00:38:26it.
00:38:26If you don't get
00:38:27it on this lap,
00:38:28you don't get
00:38:28it.
00:38:34A little wiggle
00:38:34going through
00:38:35there.
00:38:36Meanwhile, it is
00:38:37time for his
00:38:37teammate, Jacques
00:38:38Villeneuve, to go
00:38:39out.
00:38:40You're talking
00:38:40about fuel
00:38:40strategy.
00:38:41Villeneuve was
00:38:42on a two-stop
00:38:42strategy in Spain
00:38:43and wasn't happy
00:38:45at all when the
00:38:45car gave up on
00:38:46him, so he
00:38:46couldn't take
00:38:47advantage of it.
00:38:48Yeah, that dirt's
00:38:49been dragged onto
00:38:49the track there,
00:38:50so for all these
00:38:51guys on the exit
00:38:52of that corner now,
00:38:53they've got that
00:38:53dust and dirt
00:38:54kicked up.
00:38:55It is.
00:38:56You can see it
00:38:56straight over
00:38:56Villeneuve's
00:38:57left front.
00:38:59Whoa, whoa, whoa,
00:39:00whoa, whoa.
00:39:00Boy, but I don't
00:39:01think he lost
00:39:02the line.
00:39:04He didn't let
00:39:05off at all.
00:39:05He didn't lift
00:39:05off one little
00:39:06bit.
00:39:07It's a contest to
00:39:08see who can go
00:39:08how wide at
00:39:09that turn.
00:39:09Yeah, but look
00:39:10at that.
00:39:10I think we've
00:39:11maxed it.
00:39:11Now he's locking
00:39:12up going to
00:39:13rings, so he's
00:39:13lost a bit more
00:39:14time there.
00:39:15He's trying to
00:39:15overdrive it.
00:39:16Button may out
00:39:17qualify him after
00:39:18all.
00:39:18I'll tell you
00:39:18what, I'd love
00:39:19to see the
00:39:19telemetry spike
00:39:20off the
00:39:20suspension loads
00:39:21there.
00:39:22You'll see
00:39:22a leap.
00:39:23Not a bad top
00:39:28speed, all
00:39:28things considered.
00:39:30He was very
00:39:31fast, a straight
00:39:31liner, so maybe
00:39:32he's taking a
00:39:33lot of wing
00:39:33out of this
00:39:34car.
00:39:35191 miles
00:39:36now.
00:39:37They are
00:39:38running a third
00:39:39element on the
00:39:40top of the
00:39:40wing, so, but
00:39:42it is trim fairly
00:39:43flat, David,
00:39:43but he could end
00:39:45up here.
00:39:45He could end
00:39:46up seventh or
00:39:47even eighth
00:39:48unless he really
00:39:49picks up a lot
00:39:49of time in this
00:39:50last sector.
00:39:51Remember, right
00:39:52now, Jensen
00:39:52Button, his
00:39:53teammate, his
00:39:53fifth fastest.
00:39:55He lost an
00:39:56awful lot in
00:39:56that first
00:39:57section.
00:39:57Let's see how
00:39:58he does.
00:39:58Another one.
00:39:59It could be
00:39:59tenth or
00:40:00eleventh.
00:40:00Oh, man.
00:40:02Tenth, you
00:40:02called it
00:40:03exactly, David.
00:40:05Now, Villeneuve,
00:40:06of course, don't
00:40:06forgets the
00:40:07winner of this
00:40:07race, 1997,
00:40:09his first time
00:40:09here.
00:40:10Won it.
00:40:11Well, let's
00:40:11see if he can
00:40:11do it from
00:40:12tenth this time.
00:40:13This is what
00:40:13it looked like.
00:40:14Oh, what an
00:40:15adventure for Jacques
00:40:16Villeneuve.
00:40:16He hung on, but
00:40:17only barely.
00:40:18He's now
00:40:18qualified tenth.
00:40:20He'll come back
00:40:20with the top
00:40:21three right
00:40:21after this.
00:40:26Back here at
00:40:26Austria, qualifying
00:40:27for the Austrian
00:40:28Grand Prix.
00:40:30What a slide.
00:40:31Oh, great.
00:40:31You see the way
00:40:32those wheels
00:40:33wobble at the
00:40:33back when they
00:40:34hit those
00:40:34curves.
00:40:35They looked
00:40:35like the good
00:40:36old days,
00:40:36didn't it,
00:40:36David?
00:40:37They looked
00:40:37like they're
00:40:37tied on with
00:40:38jelly or
00:40:38something.
00:40:39Now, here's
00:40:39Mark Webb.
00:40:40Whoa.
00:40:40Oh, that's
00:40:41too wide.
00:40:42That is
00:40:43definitely
00:40:43too wide.
00:40:44Everybody's
00:40:44going mad
00:40:45here in the
00:40:45line.
00:40:45They're going
00:40:46made.
00:40:48Mark's
00:40:48gone made
00:40:49mouth.
00:40:50Can I
00:40:50quote you
00:40:50on that,
00:40:51Steve?
00:40:51That's
00:40:51too wide.
00:40:52Very calm.
00:40:53That's
00:40:53too wide.
00:40:54That sounds
00:40:54like something
00:40:54Ross Braun
00:40:55would say.
00:40:56A little
00:40:56wide.
00:40:57A little
00:40:57wide,
00:40:58Michael.
00:40:59Oh, my
00:41:00goodness,
00:41:01he was so
00:41:02good yesterday
00:41:03too.
00:41:03Third
00:41:04fastest.
00:41:06He was
00:41:06eighth
00:41:07fastest in
00:41:07the second
00:41:07session.
00:41:11Well, you
00:41:12know, he's
00:41:12had great
00:41:12qualifying and
00:41:13hasn't had
00:41:13great races.
00:41:14You know,
00:41:14he only got
00:41:15his first
00:41:15points in
00:41:16the last
00:41:17race.
00:41:17Maybe he
00:41:18can have
00:41:18a mediocre
00:41:18qualifying and
00:41:19have some
00:41:19great points.
00:41:20You have to
00:41:21think all that
00:41:22rubbish that's
00:41:22been thrown
00:41:23up, particularly
00:41:23from Vilna's
00:41:24dramatic qualifying
00:41:25lap, all that
00:41:26dust on the
00:41:27track cannot be
00:41:28helping the
00:41:28condition of the
00:41:29circuit, is
00:41:29it?
00:41:29I think it's
00:41:30probably caught
00:41:31Weber out there.
00:41:32He's two
00:41:33seconds over at
00:41:34this point in
00:41:35time.
00:41:35Two seconds
00:41:36slower than
00:41:36Kimi Raikkonen's
00:41:37lap.
00:41:39But he decides
00:41:40to finish it.
00:41:41Look at the
00:41:43rubbish there.
00:41:44Wow.
00:41:45This is going
00:41:45to be horrible.
00:41:4615th fastest
00:41:47from going
00:41:48third fastest
00:41:49yesterday.
00:41:50Mark Webber
00:41:50has all kinds
00:41:51of problems.
00:41:52Now, I'll
00:41:53tell you what,
00:41:53this doesn't,
00:41:54whoa, this
00:41:54doesn't bode well
00:41:55for the Ferraris
00:41:56on that last
00:41:56run because that
00:41:57dirt on the
00:41:58XTA one is
00:41:59serious.
00:42:00But everybody
00:42:00seems to lose
00:42:01it before then
00:42:01anyway.
00:42:03Now, remember,
00:42:04both the Ferrari
00:42:04runners are still
00:42:05yet to go out.
00:42:06If I was Ross
00:42:06Braun, I'd be
00:42:07wanting to get
00:42:07this session
00:42:08stopped and get
00:42:09the track
00:42:09cleaned, quite
00:42:10frankly.
00:42:11You can look
00:42:11at him.
00:42:12They're wondering
00:42:13whether or not
00:42:13they can do
00:42:14anything about
00:42:14this, I'm
00:42:15sure.
00:42:15He was looking
00:42:16at you, Steve.
00:42:17Well, no.
00:42:17Here goes
00:42:17Barrichello.
00:42:20That's a bit
00:42:21tough.
00:42:21And you can
00:42:22see the dust
00:42:22picked straight
00:42:23up as
00:42:23Barrichello
00:42:24come on to
00:42:24the start
00:42:24finish straight.
00:42:26And it's
00:42:27going to take
00:42:27a couple of
00:42:28corners to
00:42:28get rid,
00:42:29scrub off
00:42:30that dust
00:42:30that he's
00:42:30picked up.
00:42:31But there's
00:42:31just nowhere
00:42:32to do it.
00:42:32You're losing
00:42:32time.
00:42:33Maybe that's
00:42:34what Rubens
00:42:34Barrichello's
00:42:35job is to
00:42:35do right now.
00:42:36Well, he's
00:42:37two tenths
00:42:37slower there
00:42:38on that first
00:42:38sector.
00:42:39Now, that
00:42:40you wouldn't
00:42:41have expected.
00:42:42Now, remember,
00:42:42he dominated
00:42:44this race last
00:42:45pull-sitter.
00:42:46He dominated
00:42:46almost the
00:42:47entire way
00:42:47up to the
00:42:47last hundred
00:42:48yards.
00:42:49He was
00:42:49fastest in
00:42:50the second
00:42:50session today.
00:42:53Action quicker
00:42:54there.
00:42:54One kilometer,
00:42:55192 miles
00:42:57an hour.
00:42:57Now, right
00:42:57now, Kimi
00:42:58Räikkönen is
00:42:59the pull-sitter.
00:42:59He's the
00:43:00fastest driver
00:43:00today.
00:43:03He's the
00:43:04guy that
00:43:04Rubens
00:43:04Barrichello is
00:43:05trying to
00:43:05knock off.
00:43:06And he is,
00:43:07unless he's
00:43:07got a great
00:43:08final section,
00:43:09he's going
00:43:09to have a
00:43:09hard time
00:43:09doing it.
00:43:10It's going
00:43:10to have to
00:43:10be a great
00:43:11final section.
00:43:11And, of
00:43:12course, he's
00:43:12going to get
00:43:12caught out by
00:43:13that dirt
00:43:13on the
00:43:14exit to
00:43:14the A1
00:43:15corner,
00:43:17which is
00:43:18about to
00:43:18come up.
00:43:19Let's have
00:43:19a look at
00:43:19the dirt
00:43:19in his
00:43:20view.
00:43:24In fact,
00:43:24going in
00:43:25that second
00:43:25section,
00:43:26he was
00:43:26slower than
00:43:26Montoya,
00:43:27so what's
00:43:27his place
00:43:28going to
00:43:28be?
00:43:28Fourth
00:43:29fastest
00:43:29behind
00:43:30Nick
00:43:31Heidfeld.
00:43:31Nick
00:43:32Heidfeld
00:43:32is going
00:43:32to be
00:43:33faster.
00:43:33Now,
00:43:3429.5.
00:43:35He was
00:43:35the quickest
00:43:36through that
00:43:36second
00:43:36sector,
00:43:37so I
00:43:37think,
00:43:38as we
00:43:38saw them
00:43:39changing
00:43:39the wing,
00:43:40they've
00:43:40gambled on
00:43:41putting more
00:43:41downforce on.
00:43:42I think
00:43:42probably Ross
00:43:43Braun was
00:43:43caught out
00:43:43with these
00:43:44three-stop
00:43:44strategies
00:43:45that guys
00:43:45were running
00:43:45earlier on,
00:43:46if that's
00:43:46the case,
00:43:48and they
00:43:48decided to
00:43:49put more
00:43:49wing onto
00:43:49it,
00:43:50try and
00:43:50optimize
00:43:50that middle
00:43:51section of
00:43:51the track,
00:43:52and it
00:43:52did show
00:43:53up.
00:43:53That was
00:43:53the quickest
00:43:53speed all
00:43:55day through
00:43:55that second
00:43:56sector.
00:43:58All right,
00:43:59it is time
00:43:59for Michael
00:44:00Schumacher.
00:44:01Is this
00:44:01going to be
00:44:01another pole
00:44:02in his
00:44:03career,
00:44:03or is
00:44:04he not
00:44:06going to
00:44:06get the
00:44:06pole,
00:44:06and if
00:44:07Schumacher
00:44:08doesn't get
00:44:09it,
00:44:09Kimi
00:44:10Raikkonen
00:44:10would get
00:44:10his first
00:44:11pole ever.
00:44:13Michael
00:44:14Schumacher
00:44:15on track
00:44:15in the
00:44:16Ferrari,
00:44:16the F2003
00:44:17GA.
00:44:20He went
00:44:20through there
00:44:21nicely,
00:44:21how's the
00:44:22split time?
00:44:26And the
00:44:27split is
00:44:30slower.
00:44:30Slower.
00:44:31Boom!
00:44:33Big slide
00:44:34going to
00:44:34Remus,
00:44:34that'll cost
00:44:35him more
00:44:35time.
00:44:35Slower,
00:44:36but it
00:44:36could be
00:44:36the fact
00:44:37he's got
00:44:37more wing
00:44:37on.
00:44:38And remember
00:44:39now,
00:44:39let's see
00:44:39what this
00:44:40second split
00:44:40time is,
00:44:41whether or not
00:44:41it drops
00:44:42in comparison
00:44:42to Raikkonen.
00:44:49His
00:44:49straight line
00:44:50speed,
00:44:50not as
00:44:51fast as
00:44:51his
00:44:51teammate.
00:44:54All right,
00:44:54second sector
00:44:55coming up.
00:44:55Remember,
00:44:55we're comparing
00:44:56these times
00:44:56to Kimi
00:44:57Raikkonen,
00:44:58who's on the
00:44:59pole right
00:45:00now.
00:45:01He's king.
00:45:01Oh,
00:45:01this is
00:45:02going to be
00:45:02very close.
00:45:03His last
00:45:04sector is
00:45:04going to
00:45:05have it
00:45:05all.
00:45:08Michael
00:45:08Schumacher
00:45:09in the
00:45:09Ferrari
00:45:10chasing
00:45:10the
00:45:10McLaren
00:45:11and a
00:45:11Kimi
00:45:11Raikkonen,
00:45:12who is
00:45:12on the
00:45:12pole right
00:45:13now.
00:45:14Now,
00:45:14remember
00:45:15yesterday
00:45:15where Schumacher
00:45:16slid,
00:45:16but he
00:45:16still managed
00:45:17to keep
00:45:17fast his
00:45:18time.
00:45:18All right,
00:45:18coming across
00:45:19the line,
00:45:19does he
00:45:20do it?
00:45:21Yes,
00:45:22he takes
00:45:22it by
00:45:2339
00:45:24hundredths
00:45:25of a
00:45:26second.
00:45:26And he
00:45:26goes,
00:45:27these days
00:45:28with the
00:45:28celemetry
00:45:28on board,
00:45:29he knows
00:45:29there's the
00:45:29crowd going
00:45:30wild,
00:45:31booed him
00:45:31last year,
00:45:32they certainly
00:45:32aren't booing
00:45:33now.
00:45:34Wow.
00:45:35Oh,
00:45:35Kimi
00:45:36Raikkonen so
00:45:36close to
00:45:37his first
00:45:37pole.
00:45:38He must
00:45:38have thought,
00:45:39I've got it,
00:45:39I've got it,
00:45:39I've got it,
00:45:40right to the
00:45:40last second.
00:45:4129.5,
00:45:43quickest
00:45:43sector time
00:45:44through the
00:45:44second sector,
00:45:4522.3,
00:45:46quickest on
00:45:47the day
00:45:47through the
00:45:47third sector.
00:45:48That's what
00:45:49did it,
00:45:49second and
00:45:49third
00:45:50section,
00:45:50Jean
00:45:51Tot,
00:45:51you did
00:45:52it,
00:45:52guy.
00:45:52Now,
00:45:52that is a
00:45:53risk,
00:45:53though.
00:45:53He's
00:45:54obviously
00:45:54put a
00:45:54little bit
00:45:55more wing
00:45:55on that
00:45:55because he
00:45:55lost some
00:45:56of his
00:45:56top speed
00:45:57from
00:45:57yesterday.
00:45:58And,
00:45:58of course,
00:45:58as we
00:45:59know,
00:45:59it's that
00:45:59top speed
00:46:00that you
00:46:00need to
00:46:01get by
00:46:01people in
00:46:02the race.
00:46:02I was
00:46:03going to
00:46:03say,
00:46:03let's talk
00:46:03about the
00:46:04race once
00:46:04they get
00:46:04rolling.
00:46:05If you're
00:46:05set up for
00:46:06the second
00:46:06two-thirds
00:46:07of the
00:46:07lap,
00:46:08what are
00:46:08you going
00:46:08to do
00:46:08in the
00:46:08first
00:46:09third?
00:46:09I'll
00:46:09tell you
00:46:09what,
00:46:10watch out
00:46:11for fireworks
00:46:12tomorrow
00:46:12at the
00:46:13Castor
00:46:13Curve
00:46:14lap
00:46:14one.
00:46:15Oh,
00:46:15my
00:46:15God,
00:46:16Raikkonen
00:46:17and
00:46:17Michael
00:46:18a pile
00:46:19of bent
00:46:19metal
00:46:19up there.
00:46:20Michael
00:46:20was
00:46:21thrilled
00:46:22with that.
00:46:23He was,
00:46:23this
00:46:25obviously
00:46:25means an
00:46:26awful lot
00:46:26to him.
00:46:27Look at
00:46:27the times
00:46:27there,
00:46:28191
00:46:29to 199
00:46:30in the
00:46:30first
00:46:31seven.
00:46:32And then
00:46:32the second
00:46:33second,
00:46:34it goes
00:46:34right down
00:46:35to
00:46:3514th
00:46:35spot.
00:46:37Just to
00:46:38clarify the
00:46:38fuel
00:46:38situation,
00:46:39the guys
00:46:39are not
00:46:40allowed to
00:46:41change their
00:46:41fuel
00:46:41strategy
00:46:42before
00:46:43their
00:46:43qualifying
00:46:43lap.
00:46:44So
00:46:44Ferrari
00:46:44were not
00:46:45able to
00:46:45adjust
00:46:45by pumping
00:46:47fuel in
00:46:47and out
00:46:47of the
00:46:48car.
00:46:48That is
00:46:48fixed
00:46:48before
00:46:49qualifying
00:46:49begins.
00:46:50The
00:46:50only thing
00:46:50they can
00:46:51do
00:46:51was to
00:46:52change
00:46:52the
00:46:52aerodynamics.
00:46:53one
00:46:54Pablo
00:46:54Montoya
00:46:55is
00:46:55right
00:46:55behind
00:46:55Michael
00:46:56Schumacher
00:46:56on the
00:46:57grid.
00:46:57The
00:46:57BMW
00:46:58has
00:46:58got
00:46:59a
00:46:59lot
00:46:59of
00:46:59grunt.
00:47:00Is
00:47:00he
00:47:00going
00:47:00to
00:47:00get
00:47:00to
00:47:00turn
00:47:01one
00:47:01right
00:47:01alongside
00:47:02him
00:47:02or
00:47:02alongside
00:47:04Michael
00:47:04Schumacher.
00:47:05I remember
00:47:05three years
00:47:06ago,
00:47:06Schumacher
00:47:07and
00:47:07Montoya
00:47:08went off
00:47:08at the
00:47:09Riemus
00:47:09curve
00:47:09together.
00:47:11Which
00:47:11cost
00:47:11Schumacher
00:47:12the
00:47:12race.
00:47:13It's
00:47:14going to
00:47:14be a
00:47:14dramatic
00:47:15start.
00:47:16It's
00:47:16going to
00:47:16be
00:47:17incredibly
00:47:17dramatic.
00:47:19And of
00:47:19course,
00:47:19you've
00:47:19got
00:47:19Nick
00:47:19Heidfeld
00:47:20in
00:47:20there,
00:47:20who's
00:47:21got
00:47:21the
00:47:21Ferrari
00:47:21engine
00:47:22last
00:47:22year.
00:47:22So
00:47:22he's
00:47:22got
00:47:23good
00:47:23power
00:47:23as
00:47:23they
00:47:23go
00:47:23up
00:47:24to
00:47:24turn
00:47:24one
00:47:25too.
00:47:25I
00:47:25was
00:47:25just
00:47:26saying
00:47:26how
00:47:26they
00:47:27had
00:47:27been
00:47:27pretty
00:47:27quiet
00:47:28this
00:47:28year.
00:47:28Now
00:47:28they've
00:47:28popped
00:47:29up
00:47:29on
00:47:29the
00:47:29grid.
00:47:29Although
00:47:29as
00:47:30we
00:47:30mentioned
00:47:30we
00:47:31don't
00:47:31know
00:47:31what
00:47:31the
00:47:31fuel
00:47:32strategy
00:47:32is
00:47:32and
00:47:33how
00:47:33that
00:47:33plays
00:47:34into
00:47:34all
00:47:34this.
00:47:3554th
00:47:36poll
00:47:36of
00:47:36Michael
00:47:37Schumacher's
00:47:37career.
00:47:38But
00:47:38all
00:47:38those
00:47:38top
00:47:39seven
00:47:41the
00:47:42top
00:47:42eight
00:47:42all
00:47:43on
00:47:44the
00:47:44same
00:47:45second
00:47:45they've
00:47:45got
00:47:46to
00:47:46have
00:47:46roughly
00:47:47the
00:47:47same
00:47:47fuel
00:47:47and
00:47:47there
00:47:48can't
00:47:48be
00:47:48any
00:47:48real
00:47:48difference
00:47:49in
00:47:49the
00:47:49fuel
00:47:49strategy
00:47:50in
00:47:50those
00:47:50top
00:47:51eight
00:47:51cars
00:47:52it
00:47:52can't

00:50:39want to hear about what Kimi Raikkonen thinks about
00:50:41almost getting his first pole
00:50:43blue skies in the background
00:50:45well actually that's a mountain in the background but there are blue skies
00:50:47as you can see from the sun shining
00:50:49but behind the mountain
00:50:50there's a serious
00:50:51we know behind the mountain there's blue skies

00:51:08on the grid that'll be Kimi Raikkonen who's leading the championship will be in the
00:51:12outside
00:51:12Michael Schumacher who's second in the championship will be starting from the pole
00:51:16who's got the best launch control on these cars

00:51:27let's listen to this
00:51:27on the A1 Grand Prix of Austria
00:51:29welcome to our fastest three qualifiers
00:51:30to
00:51:32Juan Pablo Montoya for BMW Williams
00:51:34Kimi Raikkonen second quickest West McLaren Mercedes and on the pole for Scuderia Marlboro Ferrari
00:51:40Michael Schumacher
00:51:41Michael a great lap a little bit down after sector one there
00:51:44yeah a little wobble a little rear locking which caused me going wide but I was still lucky because I was able to catch it just at the apex again and didn't lose too much and then I had a good lap from there on
00:51:59Rubens was a little bit down on his lap was that a concern for you going into your qualifying lap
00:52:05I didn't see actually the sectors I just heard then afterwards the result
00:52:10no I mean honestly this weekend our car was balanced all weekend perfectly well with the engineers together we did a great job finding the balance straight from Friday morning onwards and no I thought that I could do better
00:52:25significantly quicker than anybody else yesterday in terms of cars versus car but today it looks very close how do you see the race tomorrow
00:52:33honestly what we have seen yesterday I would put down to maybe set up issue I guess the huge difference we have seen is not honestly true
00:52:43at least that's my guess from what I have seen and what I see today so it should be an interesting situation tomorrow
00:52:50Kimi still leading the world championship
00:52:53bit of an unfortunate event in the Spanish Grand Prix on the start line there but bouncing back very strongly here in Austria
00:52:58yeah it was good qualifying for us unfortunately didn't get the first place but the front row is okay and we see what we can do in the race
00:53:09tell us about the car how you've been working with it this weekend how does it feel what's the balance like
00:53:14yeah and yesterday we had some problems or difficulties with setups and we have improved the setup all the time
00:53:21and especially from this morning we have seems to be found the right way and in qualifying the car was good to drive and I'm quite happy with it now
00:53:30what do you think will be the strong points for your package tomorrow
00:53:34hopefully everything but I don't know what the other teams are doing and they don't know what we are doing but
00:53:40we will see tomorrow in the race what is going on but we give our best shot then hopefully is enough
00:53:46Juan Pablo six quickest yesterday but you did say that you had your feeling back for the car can you talk a little bit more about that
00:53:53well I think yesterday was you know a good day the car was starting to get better you know we had a really good balance
00:53:59but you know it wasn't quick enough and even the car felt good today
00:54:03first session was the same you know good balance but it was just you know about to be quick but
00:54:09we did some changes pretty radical changes in the car and
00:54:13made a hell of a difference and you know the car since then it got so much quicker
00:54:17and I think we got a good strategy for the race and
00:54:21in the long runs we look very competitive compared with Ferrari and McLaren so we should
00:54:25be an interesting race tomorrow quite a lot of drivers seem to run a bit too wide at turn one
00:54:30today in qualifying yeah actually you know I lost over a tenth there from my sector in the warm-up
00:54:36because I went in the warm-up and I had a bit of a moment even was quicker it was too far on the limit
00:54:42and I thought you know it's you know everybody's making mistakes there and you know I knew how to do
00:54:47you know a decent first sector without you know compromising the lap and that's what I did and looking at
00:54:52you know with Michael and Kimi that's where I lost all the time but even like that you know it's p3 and
00:54:57I'm pretty happy about that Michael since this race last year we have a new rule which says that
00:55:02no team orders should be applied that affect the result of the race now we saw you and Rubens actually
00:55:08touching wheels the previous race at the first corner in the Spanish Grand Prix can you just talk
00:55:13us through your interpretation of that new rule under the heading of how do you also drive in the best
00:55:18interests of the team you see the thing is in my mind is to win the race and that's the only thing
00:55:26that counts and that's what I'm going for that's what our strategy is based on and then team strategy
00:55:32is history fine but nonetheless team strategy does come into place still we see different cars on
00:55:40different strategies even within the same team sometimes yeah possible but I think we made a very
00:55:45clear statement after what happened last year and we will stick to that statement and whatever is
00:55:53allowed from there I mean everybody will do the same whenever it's in their interest
00:55:57some prediction of rain tomorrow your thoughts on that
00:56:02well no thoughts honestly I think we we will be prepared for all circumstance honestly we have now
00:56:10the two choices of of ties which I think is a very wise decision from from the FIA to make the sport a
00:56:18bit safer in that respect and so I have no doubt whatever weather condition we will face now if we could have
00:56:26some words from you each in your own language starting with Michael Michael Schumacher is on the
00:56:30pole it's very simple you win the race you don't have to worry about team orders at least if you're Michael Schumacher
00:56:36Michael Schumacher we're going to take a brief break we'll come back with more from Austria right after this
00:56:44welcome back to Speed Channel's coverage of qualifying for the Austin Grand Prix and this
00:56:57is how you get a pole position
00:56:59you saw that little twitch there as he went into the Castro curve
00:57:05long run down to the Remus
00:57:07this little blue another quick rotation there but as he said he caught it didn't really lose much time
00:57:16but at that point he was he was slower by just over a tenth of a second
00:57:23but then in the second sector he was very quick he was slightly quicker in the straight line than the
00:57:29McLaren although not as quick as his teammate but he was very quick through these two downhill left-handers
00:57:37not quite as wide as Rubensburg guy there he's using all the curb there wasn't he at this point he's still
00:57:49400 to 500 of a second slower than Kimi Raikkonen and in these last two corners he just nailed absolutely spot on
00:57:57on yeah
00:58:02fist in the air like he had a victory that was his 54th pole 163rd pole for Ferrari
00:58:10of course it looked like it looked like it looked like it was all done didn't it to those last two corners he must have just
00:58:17just got those two absolutely aced and he was obviously
00:58:20ecstatic about it now of course is his 54th pole and the crowd too
00:58:26very very very pro Schumacher there are those the same guys that booed him last year
00:58:31you'd never know it for what they look like today
00:58:33John Todd with a smile on his face there like the cat that got the cream
00:58:37remember Kimi Raikkonen was so close to his very first bowl thought he had it through the first
00:58:42two seconds right till the right till the end there
00:58:45and instead Michael Schumacher who else took it away from Kimi Raikkonen
00:58:51remember coming up next immediately following qualifying at 9 30 this morning eastern time we're
00:58:56going to have live coverage of the third round of the international formula 3000 championship no big
00:59:02surprise from right here in Austria the A1 ring and tomorrow live coverage of the formula one
00:59:08Austrian Grand Prix we're going to get started with the Acura pre-race show that'll happen at 7 30 in
00:59:13the morning as always Peter Winslow will bring us the latest news and gossip from the paddock but
00:59:18first let's take a look at last year's Austrian Grand Prix remember it was Rubens Barrichello who is
00:59:23starting from his fifth career pole no that's not Rubens but sure she was glad to be there
00:59:29the fifth career pole for Rubens and he led Schumacher into turn one and watch Nick Heidfeld in the
00:59:35Sauber he got a great jump moving pat right here you can see it right there moving around the Williams
00:59:40in the third everybody's streamed through turn one there a little bit of drama a couple of a couple of
00:59:46cars going off
00:59:47look at the way the two Ferraris are pulling away from the field
00:59:53yeah
00:59:53Kimi Raikkonen there blowing a Mercedes for the fourth time in last year's first six races and
01:00:00then Olivier Panis had a driveline failure but it seems to be more than driveline failure lots of
01:00:05debris coming out of the car there and that brought out the safety car now the restart was really ugly
01:00:12watch this Nick Heidfeld spins across the grass right there and takes out an unsuspecting Takuma
01:00:17Sato just nails him well he went across the bowels of Montoya there missed him by an answer
01:00:23Sato was taken for x-rays turned out only had a bruised leg hard Michelin tire one-stop strategy
01:00:28allowed Juan Pablo Montoya to take fuel only and get ahead of his teammate Ralph Schumacher
01:00:35after an exchange of pit stops at the finish though well we thought it was going to be all
01:00:39Barrichello yeah we thought he pulled over and let Michael Schumacher go by and it was ugly
01:00:49it was very ugly there is that same crowd that's just been waving ecstatically being the old thumbs
01:00:54down and then there was this this is what really got them in trouble last year
01:01:00it wasn't so much the team strategy although that everybody hated that it was when Michael
01:01:04Michael Schumacher gave the trophy to Rubens and let Rubens go up to the top step a major break in
01:01:12formula one protocol don't be doing that again this year boys beautiful countryside today will it rain
01:01:18tomorrow we'll be back with more right after this
01:01:25back here at Austria where Michael Schumacher has just shown him how it's done getting yet another
01:01:29pole another feather for his cap but he only did it the last possible moment and we see the cars
01:01:37being pushed into cars that's that right front wheel which if you remember yesterday had an incredible
01:01:42flat spot on it there's Montoya there's that camera that we'd uh wouldn't want to be stuck in
01:01:49it'd be fun to go up there and look at it briefly but i don't think i want to stay up there the whole race
01:01:53well you are who is uh destined to end up 10th but he won't be uh having a very good debrief at
01:02:02the moment with patrick head sir frank and mario tyson
01:02:07and then ralph firman who had his off yesterday whoa went a little wide right there
01:02:13de mott actually improved his situation he ended up 13th on the day yeah a lot better than i was
01:02:17running yesterday there's the staff and in the minardi which lost his gears and here's what really
01:02:23mattered this was fernando alonso going off into the gravel which uh i think he said fernando what
01:02:37nick heidfeld of course had a very good qualifying run ended up in p4 yeah that's the best qualifying
01:02:43for sauber in austria since 1998 when john lacy was on the front row from you yell at him eddie
01:02:48and fishy keller there being yelled at by eddie jordan who actually up to finished up ninth
01:02:52probably would have been seventh if it hadn't been for that
01:02:57and for reikon in so close so near yet so far well he's still pretty pretty close he's still on the
01:03:04front row quicker for three quarters of the way around the track except the last little sector then
01:03:09his teammate david coultard uh really overdrove there on pablo montoya who ended up third
01:03:14let us know if we're boring you
01:03:20now there was a session before this qualifying session that's the brief warm-up let's give you
01:03:25some of the highlights from that jensen button he was the fastest guy early on remember he had done
01:03:30so well yesterday and was really expected to do very well today ralph schumacher went for a trip at
01:03:35the a1 corner where so many people have been off the road this weekend and his brother going through the
01:03:41same corner in a much more controlled fashion he uh briefly snatched the fastest time in the warm
01:03:47this morning just by just over a quarter of a second and nick heifeld gave us just a brief
01:03:51taste of what was to come when once again this is no warm-up before qualifying he was the fastest
01:03:57man for a brief time although it was a very brief time because not long afterwards mclaren and david
01:04:03coultard came across and he snagged the fastest but even he couldn't hold on to it he could not because
01:04:10his teammate kimmy raikkonen seen here going around that last corner snatched uh p1 away from david
01:04:18coultard although he used to blot his copper but moments later with this little spin didn't did not
01:04:23stall the car and once again this was the morning warm or the warm-up right before qualifying and
01:04:28juan pablo montoya ended up being the fastest guy in this session although it didn't relate
01:04:33in terms of getting a pole position

01:06:00yeah wasn't it michael schumacher the fastest man at the a1 ring kimmy raikkonen just missed it
01:06:07right behind him montoya looking a lot happier than it was yesterday and this morning nick hyde
01:06:11felt there great qualifying from him and rubens barichella must be wondering yes exactly what went
01:06:15wrong back there in fifth spot piano truly jensen button not a great run but better than his teammate
01:06:21and check out antonio pazonia out qualified mark weber yeah for the first time this year fisher
01:06:26keller there had that big bobble on the last corner probably would have gone him into eight spot
01:06:30then as i'm going on down olivier panis again looking a lot better than yesterday as his
01:06:34teammate christiano damara jack villano had a wild run there davy cooltout also had a wild run
01:06:39didn't do much good of course alonso went off the road there and mark weber back in 17th he was
01:06:45bouncing all over the place and for stopping never actually finished the lap because of transmission
