00:00:30Hello and welcome to Speed's coverage of the final qualifying round for the fifth round of the Formula One World Championship.
00:00:42It is the Spanish Grand Prix. I'm Rick DeBruy. Joining me as always are David Hobbs and Steve Matchett.
00:00:48An absolutely beautiful day in Spain. Time to get ready to see exactly what's going to happen out there.
00:00:55Will it be a Renault upset on the grid today?
00:01:00Well, obviously there's a good chance that Fernando Alonso is really going to go for it today.
00:01:07But of course, the team's got to be thinking strategically in the long term.
00:01:10Are they really going to let the car run really light to make sure they get the Spaniard on the pole for the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time?
00:01:17Whatever. Or are they going to, you know, could they go to that way they may jeopardize their race?
00:01:24He's certainly fired up. He's going to want to do well here at his own race.
00:01:27The guys I've been talking to at Renault are saying expect it to be a three-stopper race.
00:01:31So that means they're going to be running low fuel for sure. He could do it.
00:01:36And Alonso was the fastest guy at the end of the second practice session.
00:01:39All right, David, before we see the cars on the track, why don't you take us around once?
00:01:43Well, it's a fairly complex circuit here at the Circuit de Cataluna.
00:01:48Just a hair under three miles.
00:01:51Thirteen turns, all of which have got nice names.
00:01:54And long straight here, nearly a kilometer long into the right-hander, Elf, which is a fairly slow corner.
00:01:59Then you've got some very, very long, fast corners here.
00:02:02That Renault, I mean, puts a tremendous load on the outside tyres.
00:02:06The rep's all the same.
00:02:07Down to Seat, which is a downhill corner, so you get a lot of understeer there.
00:02:10Berth at the bottom of the hill.
00:02:11Then you start to go up to Kamsa, which is a sharp right-hander.
00:02:15And a quick run along the top.
00:02:17And you start to go downhill steeply to La Cacha, which is another left-hand.
00:02:21Now it's climbing up to Bank Sabadell.
00:02:24Another run along the top, and then New Holland, that double right-hander there.
00:02:27A very, very fast right-hander onto the straight, which obviously you want to get right.
00:02:32With a kilometer straight in front of you, you want to get onto it as fast as you can
00:02:35so that he can outbrake somebody into turn one.
00:02:40First car out on the track, Justin Wilson.
00:02:42This is his warm-up lap as he gets ready to qualify.
00:02:45Justin Wilson, they used to talk about how tall he is.
00:02:47Now they're talking about when's he going to finish a race.
00:02:49He's the only guy so far this season who has yet to finish a race.
00:02:53Let's mention real quickly, once again, it is a beautiful day.
00:02:55It is 73 degrees, although the track temperature is nice and warm at 93.
00:03:00A real slight breeze, but more importantly, nice and sunny.
00:03:03No talk about whether screwing things up this weekend or changing things around.
00:03:07It's just what these drivers can do.
00:03:09Wind, of course, can play a major part of this track.
00:03:13It's affected by the wind, and the teams do a lot of testing here.
00:03:16They come here one day, and they do X time, and they come back the next day, and they can't get close to it.
00:03:21And it's all to do with the wind, and it also carries a lot of dust and sand onto the track here, which can be a problem.
00:03:26So a light wind day here is what you want.
00:03:30Yeah, now the thing to keep your eye on here is that track temperature.
00:03:33It's got very hot over the last couple of hours, and we're expecting the cars to start sliding around an awful lot.
00:03:39Justin Wilson now on his flying qualifying lap.
00:03:43He's running quite a lot of downforce on the back of the Minardi, and he will need it as well,
00:03:46because I'm expecting to see a lot of oversteer on the cars this afternoon because of that heat.
00:03:52Remember last year when the Minardis had to withdraw from this race as a result of wind failure.
00:03:57Yes, and that's the result right down the bottom of that long straight, that Columbia long straight, David,
00:04:02you were telling us about.
00:04:03There's a huge amount of aerodynamic load put onto the cars right just before the braking point.
00:04:07And, yeah, both Minardis suffering with wing failures.
00:04:11And in fact, the wing blew off Kimi-Raitland's McLaren last year.
00:04:14Most un-McLaren-like thing to happen.
00:04:16Absolutely.
00:04:17Absolutely.
00:04:18The problem is that you need to get that downforce on the car.
00:04:22There you go.
00:04:23To make these cars stick through the infield section, you have to compromise that straight line speed.
00:04:28You cannot afford to run a low downforce setup on this track.
00:04:31That corner we just went through is Kamsa, top of the hill that's where Ralf Schumacher,
00:04:36this is the Kasha at the bottom of the hill.
00:04:37As you can see, as you go through the corner, it starts to rise up again here
00:04:40to the Bank Sabadell, which is another long right-hander.
00:04:44Again, putting a lot of load onto those outside tires, onto the left tires here.
00:04:49And these two corners really load up the left front, the left, especially the left front.
00:04:53Bit of a wobble there.
00:04:54On these on-board shots throughout the day.
00:04:58Keep your eye on that left front tire, as David was explaining.
00:05:01You'll start to see it grain up really quickly.
00:05:04So Justin Wilson has completed his very first qualifying run.
00:05:09Now it's time for his teammate to go out there.
00:05:12Let's take a look at the little incident that he had.
00:05:15Just as you were talking about keeping it on the track was when he started to go off, Steve.
00:05:22And that's slower than he went this morning.
00:05:26He did a 21-9 this morning.
00:05:28He's just done a 22 and change now.
00:05:31So that's a 22-1.
00:05:32So, well, a little bit slower than he was this morning.
00:05:35Well, he used every inch of the grass creed out there, didn't he?
00:05:38He certainly did, yeah.
00:05:39I wouldn't be surprised as well.
00:05:40A lot of teams have probably been running on the softer option compound of the two they're allowed to bring.
00:05:45As now we're watching Jos Verstappen's attempted his qualifying lap in the Minardi.
00:05:49But I think because of the high, high tire degradation around this track,
00:05:54especially with the increase in temperature,
00:05:56many of the teams will have opted for the harder compound tires.
00:06:00And again, thinking back to what we're saying about Renault and Alonso with the potential of a three-stopper,
00:06:04the reason for that primarily,
00:06:06oh, and the back end of the Minardi really stepping out there,
00:06:08is going to be to protect those tires so that they can change tires more often throughout the race.
00:06:13This is a killer on tires.
00:06:19Remember Verstappen's qualifying attempt at Imola,
00:06:22he was, it was not a pretty picture,
00:06:25making a mistake, going off the track,
00:06:27and he's pulling in.
00:06:30Nope.
00:06:31For a moment I thought he was pulling in and calling it quits there.
00:06:34Which would have been pretty bizarre at the back half of the track.
00:06:38Well, it would have been a difficult way.
00:06:42It's never pretty that way.
00:06:45Slower than his teammate.
00:06:46Wow.
00:07:03Definitely slower than his teammate by about 13 hundredths of a second.
00:07:06Jasper Verstappen.
00:07:07Well, that means Justin Wilson will not be starting last on the grid for the Spanish Grand Prix.
00:07:14Time to take a quick break.

00:07:44Now it is Ralph Furman's turn in the Jordan.
00:07:47Ralph Furman, teammate to Giancarlo Fischer-Keller, a rookie this year.
00:07:54But it's ten years since he won the Odd Sport Driver of the Year Award, 1993.
00:08:00That's when he thought he was going to make his break into Formula One.
00:08:02It's taken ten years to get there.
00:08:04And unfortunately, it's showing.
00:08:07Coral Routh is under a lot of pressure now.
00:08:10Made some mistakes.
00:08:11Very unlucky in Brazil when the suspension collapsed on his car.
00:08:14Certainly wasn't his fault.
00:08:16And David, watching the car now.
00:08:17The car, this Jordan EJ13 chassis, is not helping Furman at all, is it?
00:08:22I mean, the thing is really moving all over the track.
00:08:25It's just, it's not in the track.
00:08:27As Martin Brunel, as you say, and I worked with him in 92,
00:08:29that my car is not in the track.
00:08:30It's riding on top of it.
00:08:32It's just, the thing's loose.
00:08:35Significantly quicker than, uh,
00:08:39than Justin Wilson.
00:08:40But you would sort of expect it to be.
00:08:42Yeah.
00:08:43Much, much bigger team.
00:08:44This is those two really fast right-handers.
00:08:49Looked pretty good through there.
00:08:54Ralph Furman on the pole for a brief moment.
00:08:56Significantly faster.
00:08:57Almost two seconds faster than Justin Wilson's time.
00:09:00But the bigger question is going to be,
00:09:01how does he compare to his teammates Giancarlo Fisichelli,
00:09:03who's going to come up in just a, just another couple people.
00:09:07Now, that's not as quick as he's been before.
00:09:08But, of course, you just don't know with the qualifying this year,
00:09:11what fuel load they've got on board.
00:09:13Plus, the track temperature's gone up a lot since this morning.
00:09:16Track temperature up.
00:09:17And these guys have must try and protect the tyres for the first opening stint.
00:09:21You can't afford to wreck the tyres in qualifying like you could last year,
00:09:24and then bolt on another set of tyres for the start of the race.
00:09:26Under the new reg, you have to start on the tyres you qualify with,
00:09:29so you've got to, you've got to bear that in mind.
00:09:31You can't push the car too hard around here.
00:09:34Nick Hydefield next out on the track to qualify, and the Sauber.
00:09:38It's been a pretty uneventful year for the Sauber.
00:09:40I was expecting more from them this year.
00:09:46Look at that long straight down to Elf.
00:09:50Hard braking into Elf.
00:09:52Very hard on the brakes.
00:09:53Then you pick up speed all the way through here.
00:09:56Now, this is that long, long right-hander, the Renault Tour.
00:09:59Look at it.
00:09:59You can just imagine what those left-side tyres are going through.
00:10:03195 mile an hour for Nick Hydefield.
00:10:05Quick run, and then more.
00:10:07Long, long, long, long left, the right-hander.
00:10:11Now, he's starting to run downhill.
00:10:13Bit of relief for the right-side tyres here.
00:10:15We have a slow left-hander, or medium-speed left-hander, downhill.
00:10:20Downhill all the way here to Vert.
00:10:23Look at the apex here.
00:10:24Then a very fast run up the hill to Kamser, the top of the hill here.
00:10:28Relatively little rear wing work on the back of the Sauber there.
00:10:31Most of the teams you'll see will have dropped downforce off the car from yesterday to today
00:10:37because, again, to the new regulations,
00:10:40you're not allowed to touch the rear wing settings before the start of the race.
00:10:44So, to optimise the chance of overtaking down that long straight,
00:10:47you've got to take some downforce off the car.
00:10:51Almost two-tenths of a second faster during that split.
00:10:54Last year, he qualified eighth here, finished fourth.
00:10:56Assuming he's going to take it away, yes, by about half a second,
00:11:03he is the fastest man taking Ralph Furman away from the pole.
00:11:08But still, an awful lot of people yet to come.
00:11:10We know this isn't going to hold.
00:11:11The big question is, how's everybody else going to do?
00:11:14We're going to take a quick break.

00:11:32Another Sauber out on the track right now.
00:11:34It is Heinz-Harold Frensen.
00:11:35We just saw his teammate, Nick Heidfeld, a moment ago
00:11:41take the pole position, but once again, we've only had four qualifiers,
00:11:45so not expecting his time to hold up.
00:11:48Heinz-Harold's been quicker than Nick Heidfeld pretty well all weekend.
00:11:51Of course, Heinz-Harold, one of the oldest drivers out there
00:11:54and certainly got a lot of experience under his belt.
00:11:57Just slightly, and I mean just slightly faster than his teammate.
00:12:08Two one-hundredths of a second in that section.
00:12:12146th Grand Prix start this will be for Heinz-Harold.
00:12:1635 years old.
00:12:22The car looks pretty good, David.
00:12:23Looks good.
00:12:27Second split.
00:12:28Good two-tenths faster.
00:12:31A lot of handling in that second split.
00:12:35And a lot of, this is where you've got to get your wing,
00:12:38your aero, and your drag balance right,
00:12:40because these two corners, you need a little bit of downforce
00:12:43to be secure, but you want the car to be running free as well.
00:12:48Tremendously fast right-hander there.
00:12:51Frensen was 13 fastest after the second session this morning,
00:12:54but now he is the pole sitter for a brief moment.
00:12:58About two-tenths of a second faster than his teammate, Nick Heidfeld.
00:13:02And also quicker than he went this morning.
00:13:05So much for fuel load.
00:13:07But not as quick as he went yesterday.
00:13:11But I think it's warmer today.
00:13:13I think it's a lot warmer today.
00:13:15Certainly the temperature seems to be rising.
00:13:16Which I guess is a way that they want the FIA want the session to be run,
00:13:22that the cars coming out later and later
00:13:24will have the advantage of more rubber being put down.
00:13:28You see the guys, the Salvo mechanics,
00:13:31putting dry ice into the radiator ducts now
00:13:33as the cars are put into Park Fermé.
00:13:35Dry ice put into the radiator ducts
00:13:36just to drop the underbody temperatures.
00:13:38Remember that there's no cooling other than airflow
00:13:41going through those radiators.
00:13:43There's no fans or anything to keep the underbody temperature down.
00:13:46And you get a lot of heat sink
00:13:48once you switch one of those lumps off.
00:13:51We're getting ready for Giancarlo Fisichella
00:13:53to go out for just a moment.
00:13:54There we've got a brief view of Fernando Alonso
00:13:56as he got in.
00:13:57Don't forget that immediately following

00:14:06Giorgio Pantano is sitting on the pole,

00:14:54we saw the Alfonso Mania signs
00:14:56already in the stands.
00:14:57There's plenty of them there.
00:14:59A lot of talk about whether they're just,
00:15:01you know, whether they're running
00:15:02a competitive fuel load
00:15:03or whether they're simply going to go out
00:15:04and make it a point to get the pole
00:15:05for this crowd.
00:15:06But I think they're not worried about the crowd.
00:15:08They're worried about the race.
00:15:09I think so.
00:15:10I think Renault...
00:15:11Renault are too big a concern
00:15:12to be worried about putting the car on pole
00:15:14to please the fans.
00:15:15Of course, they'd like to do it.
00:15:16But their agenda is all about
00:15:18winning the race now.
00:15:24This is Giancarlo Fisichello.
00:15:25We're back to pictures of actual qualifying.
00:15:28So the tape we saw just a moment ago.
00:15:29Remember, his teammate, Ralph Fuhrman,
00:15:34with a 120.215.
00:15:37Seems like every time Giancarlo Fisichello goes out,
00:15:40he knocks Fuhrman's credibility
00:15:42just a little bit more.
00:15:44Yeah, but Giancarlo not having a great weekend so far.
00:15:51He's definitely mid to low pack.
00:15:54Unfortunately, yesterday he was 15th fastest,
00:15:57for instance.
00:15:58And this morning he was only 14th.
00:16:02So just he was actually slower than Princeton this morning.
00:16:05So Kenny actually beat him in the qualifying South Wales.
00:16:08But here again,
00:16:09he's got to qualify everything by saying
00:16:11we don't know how much fuel they've got on board.
00:16:12The great mystery factor.
00:16:18Comes across the line
00:16:19to actually start his qualifying time.
00:16:22Big stand and a lot of people in it.
00:16:23All come to see old Fred Alonso
00:16:25get the pole position.
00:16:29Stamp on the brakes and turning the one.
00:16:33190 mile an hour.
00:16:34Fisichello into that corner.
00:16:37This is the corner we're talking about,
00:16:38which puts those high lateral loads through the car.
00:16:41You get a bit of a breather down this very short straight.
00:16:43And then it does it all again here.
00:16:45This goes to almost 180 degrees
00:16:47in this corner.
00:16:53Then the left front
00:16:53finally gets a bit of a break
00:16:55as you go through this left-hander.
00:16:57Hard on the brakes here, too.
00:17:02You want to make a good effort on this corner
00:17:04because it's a long climb up.
00:17:05It's a pretty steep hill up here
00:17:06up to Kamsa,
00:17:08which you also want to make a good run on
00:17:09because it's a fairly long straight following this.
00:17:12In that first sector,
00:17:13he was slower than his teammate,
00:17:15Ralph Furman.
00:17:15Wow, look at that, too.
00:17:19He's way off the pace.
00:17:20Once again,
00:17:20he's slower in that sector
00:17:21than his teammate as well.
00:17:23A lot slower than Heinz Harrell.
00:17:24So this is not looking good
00:17:26for Gene Calo Fisichello.
00:17:27And once again,
00:17:28we don't know what kind of fuel load
00:17:29he's running.
00:17:30That's always going to be the key

00:17:32the new regulations on qualifying.

00:18:05the first of the Williams cars.
00:18:06This is Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:18:08And characteristically early
00:18:10in a qualifying session
00:18:11these guys are going out.
00:18:13Yeah, they didn't have
00:18:13a good day yesterday
00:18:14or they either had
00:18:15a bad day
00:18:16or they had an exceptionally good day.
00:18:18They might have been
00:18:19carrying a lot of fuel
00:18:19all weekend
00:18:20to get the feel of the car
00:18:21for the race.
00:18:22Yeah.
00:18:22Listen.
00:18:24Our truck temperature
00:18:25has gone up
00:18:26four degrees
00:18:27in the last couple of minutes.
00:18:28We're now at
00:18:2895 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:18:31So it is getting hot out there.
00:18:34These guys have been
00:18:35struggling with the aerodynamics
00:18:36again on this car.
00:18:38Yesterday,
00:18:39you could see the car
00:18:40was very squirrely.
00:18:43Let's see how he does.
00:18:45Well,
00:18:45they were 195 miles an hour
00:18:46down the straight,
00:18:47so they were five miles an hour
00:18:48quicker than the Jordans,
00:18:49but not faster
00:18:51in the first section.
00:18:53But yesterday,
00:18:54the Ferraris
00:18:54were doing nearly 200
00:18:55down the straight.
00:18:56but of course,
00:19:01their aerodynamicist
00:19:02Jeff Willis
00:19:03now with BAR.
00:19:05So they lost him
00:19:06and of course,
00:19:06they lost
00:19:07Adrian Newey
00:19:08a few years back.
00:19:11And it's got to hurt them.
00:19:13Just slightly faster
00:19:14than Heinz-Harald Frentzen
00:19:15after two splits.
00:19:16But normally,
00:19:21you would expect him
00:19:21to be significantly faster
00:19:23than Heinz-Harald Frentzen.
00:19:24So this is Juan Pablo Montoya's
00:19:31qualifying run
00:19:32and
00:19:32it puts him
00:19:34at the front of the grid
00:19:35but only by
00:19:36five one-hundredths
00:19:36of a second.
00:19:37And the question is,
00:19:38how disappointing
00:19:39is this for Williams?
00:19:40I mean,
00:19:4119.3 going on
00:19:43this morning's practice
00:19:44is going to put him
00:19:45right about
00:19:47where he is
00:19:47at the moment,
00:19:48right about
00:19:48sort of 14th.
00:19:52Realizing that
00:19:52Williams has had
00:19:53four poles
00:19:54at this track
00:19:55over the years,
00:19:56this is way
00:19:57off the pace.
00:19:58Well,
00:19:58they took a huge gamble,
00:20:00I think,
00:20:00with the aerodynamic
00:20:00design of this car.
00:20:02They knew it
00:20:03from the outset.
00:20:04They knew they had
00:20:05to react big time
00:20:06to become competitive
00:20:07again to
00:20:08the steps that
00:20:09Ferrari had made
00:20:09with aerodynamics.
00:20:11And,
00:20:11well,
00:20:12the comments
00:20:12around at the time,
00:20:13if it works,
00:20:14it'll be great.
00:20:15If it doesn't work,
00:20:16it'll be a dog.
00:20:17She doesn't even know
00:20:18that Alonzo is nowhere
00:20:19near the track
00:20:20at this moment.
00:20:20At least it's going up.
00:20:23First of the Jaguars,
00:20:24Antonio Pisonia,
00:20:25and we are hearing
00:20:25an awful lot
00:20:26about the future
00:20:27of this new man.
00:20:30Well,
00:20:31Pisonia was pumped
00:20:33up enormously
00:20:33by Patrick Head
00:20:34from Williams
00:20:35who he did some
00:20:35testing for
00:20:36for a couple of years
00:20:37and they thought
00:20:38he was terrific.
00:20:38We watched him
00:20:40in Formula 3000
00:20:41last year
00:20:41and he didn't
00:20:43show us a lot
00:20:43in Formula 3000,
00:20:44I have to admit.
00:20:46Spent a lot of time
00:20:46off the road,
00:20:47spent a lot of time
00:20:48running into people
00:20:48and his Formula 1
00:20:50career has gone
00:20:51off to a dodgy start
00:20:52this year
00:20:53and Mark Webber
00:20:53has been
00:20:54significantly quicker
00:20:55than him
00:20:56everywhere
00:20:56which puts him
00:20:59under awful
00:20:59lot of pressure
00:21:00of course
00:21:00so the whole thing
00:21:01just
00:21:01everything goes
00:21:03the wrong way
00:21:04and suddenly
00:21:04it won.
00:21:05And there's talk
00:21:06that Alexander
00:21:07Virch
00:21:08may be replacing
00:21:09him on the team
00:21:10although there's still
00:21:10a lot of political
00:21:11games being played
00:21:12behind the scenes.
00:21:16Anthony Davidson
00:21:17another name being
00:21:17talked about
00:21:18Luciano Birdie
00:21:19but the big issue
00:21:21is Jaguar
00:21:22yet again
00:21:23having to
00:21:24a little management
00:21:25shake up
00:21:26and trying to figure
00:21:27out what to do
00:21:28instead of just
00:21:28riding with the man
00:21:29and letting him
00:21:29play out
00:21:30he's fifth fastest
00:21:34behind Ralph Fuhrman
00:21:37seems to me
00:21:39Pisoni is the least
00:21:40of their troubles
00:21:41this year
00:21:41Mark Webber's
00:21:42doing great
00:21:43he should be
00:21:44spending time
00:21:44worrying about
00:21:45what's going on
00:21:46up front
00:21:46and moving
00:21:47Mark up
00:21:47as much as
00:21:47possible

00:21:51having an
00:21:51extraordinary

00:21:52haven't had a lot
00:21:53of luck yet
00:21:54in terms of
00:21:54results and
00:21:55points
00:21:55but has shown
