00:00Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated his commitment to a US$32 billion project to build the country's new capital city, Nusantara.
00:10It comes as he made his first overnight stay there as President.
00:16Questions over the future of the Nusantara capital project have lingered since Prabowo took office in October 2024.
00:23The project is a legacy of his predecessor, Joko Widodo, better known as Joko Widodo, who announced the plan in 2019 to move the capital 1,200 kilometers from the overcrowded and sinking Jakarta.
00:36Widodo had missed his target of relocating the government by the end of his second and final term in 2024.
00:43It was because construction of the city in a remote southeastern part of Borneo Island began in 2022 after pandemic-related delays.
00:51Last year, Prabowo approved a budget of about US$2.89 billion for the project through 2029, around 60% of what Widodo spent between 2022 and 2024.
01:03The project is now targeting completion by 2028 for buildings housing the legislative and judicial branches of government.
