There is no plan to bring back the iconic Penang ferry for passenger services, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said operating the old ferry service is technically challenging as it is difficult to source replacement parts and its incompatibility with the new ferry terminals.

00:00Ferry Pulau Pinang
00:30Untuk Pulau Pinang yang utama
00:31Sejak berpuluh tahun yang lalu
00:33Walaupun Iconic Ferry ini telah pun ditamatkan operasinya
00:38Pada tahun 2020
00:39Tetapi apa yang kita kekalkan sebagai nostalgia
00:44Kepada rakyat Pulau Pinang ialah
00:46Ferry tersebut
00:48Yang diubah suai menjadi sebuah muzium
00:51Di sini
00:52Jadi saya yakin bahawa muzium ini akan memberikan
00:56Satu nilai warisan dan sejarah
00:59Yang besar kepada Pulau Pinang
01:01Dan supaya bukan sahaja rakyat tempatan
01:04Malah pengunjung-pengunjung
01:05Boleh mengetahui
01:06Asal-usul dan juga sejarah
01:09Ferry tersebut
01:10Bagaimana dia membantu
01:12Pembangunan negeri Pulau Pinang
01:14Selama
01:15Satu abad yang lalu
01:18Jadi saya
01:20Amat
01:22Amat berbangga
01:25Dengan pembukaan muzium
01:26Ferry Pulau Pinang ini
01:27Kerana ia merupakan satu
01:30Satu nilai sejarah
01:32Yang tidak boleh dipadamkan
01:34Dan saya harap ini dapat memberikan
01:36Bukan sahaja kepada
01:38Peluang kepada
01:39Lebih ramai orang
01:41Untuk mengenali
01:42Ferry Pulau Pinang
01:43Tetapi juga merupakan
01:44Satu produk perlancongan
01:45Untuk Pulau Pinang
01:46Tuan
01:48Adakah kesempatan
01:49Peri perlancongan ikonik

02:14Tidak
02:15Pocos
02:16Pocos
02:16to change to the new ferry the terminal has changed so so the current terminals
02:22is not suitable for the iconic ferry because the operation is totally
02:26different so to in order for the for us to revive the old iconic ferry services
02:33you need to build another terminal which is not possible at this part of time so
02:39I think we have made a decision that for normal services for passenger services
02:44the new ferry should proceed the iconic ferry as we have mentioned and we have
02:50done we have turned it into a museum there's another one being turned into a
02:54floating restaurant and I think it should continue to be a tourism product instead
03:00of for normal passenger services for the normal passenger services currently there
03:04are four ferries of course under the contract under the agreement they should
03:09have at least five so that if the demand is high then of course the port commission
03:16should look into she should look into asking the operator to increase it to the
03:22maximum five in terms of capacity because PPSP recently said that not recently last year
03:28they said that despite having many passengers using the ferry the profit is still not there yet what do you think would be the issue here
03:36of course because we we we control the prices do you want them to make profit so if you want to
03:44bring profit it's not it's not social enterprise this is part of the penang port
03:48privatization this is the obligation of PBSB so of course we know that the penang ferry services is
03:56not it's not profit making in fact they have to cross subsidize the operation I see
04:02incur losses but but that is an obligation under the privatization plan so the entire penang
04:10ferry services is part of the privatization plan of penang port so they take everything together so this is
04:18a cross-subsidy model why why they cannot make money on ferry services for a simple
04:23reason the government controls the fare and we are not going to increase the fare if
04:28not then I'm sure penang X would not be happy as well because a lot of people
04:32depends on this mode as a daily commute between the Butterworth and the Georgetown so
04:37we have no plan to increase the fact in fact right now under our new agreement
04:43uh every year uh they have to give uh eight days right twelve days of free services that's why
04:51right nowadays you see Chinese New Year and some public holidays we give free services it's not it's
04:59it's not a decision by PBSB it's a decision of PPC because we have to ensure that they deliver on the
05:05public goods as well the public services as well so that's why certain days in the year we are giving free
05:11uh ferry services to the public
05:13uh
